I've heard good things but was pretty disappointed with the food. Â We sat inside which probably was a mistake, the place has character, old style, very old seating, dark, super old bathroom, and maybe somewhat cozy if it were 10 below zero, but the food was a generous average to bad. Â We ordered the chicken fingers for the kids, very processed, overpriced 9 bucks and tasted pretty rough, couldn't eat them. Â Also got two salads, the lettuce was not fresh and dressing tasted like it came out of a bottle. Â The chicken sandwich was just ok, nothing special and the fries were overly greasy. Â
I think if we sat outside and just had a beer in their big patio it would be been fine, then got dinner someplace else. Â Sorry Hackneys, wish I could have been more positive. Â Think about changing the menu and / or where you get the food.
Great, old school funky vibe...tasty food...but I gotta say, Â not as over the top amazing as Guy Fieri (Diners, Drive Ins and Dives)always makes it seem. Don't get me wrong, if I lived locally this would probably be a regular stop, but after almost a week of eating in a different restaurant for both lunch and dinner every day, I was ready to have my fat kid socks knocked off and it just didn't happen.
I did like the old school dark, neighborhood vibe this place had. The staff seemed to know many of the regulars, and the bar looked like a nice place to have sat as well. The menu has a German flare, and the house specialty onion loaf looked amazing, although we did not order it. I had the signature "Inside Out Burger" on the house dark rye. The pleasant dark brown sliced bread was a nice change from a regular old bun....but it was not a wise choice for a juicy stuffed burger and it quickly became soggy and no help at all in holding on to the great sandwich. Â We also had the homemade apple pie with cinnamon ice cream, very good...and the bread pudding with the toffee sauce...both fantastic and leaving us on near food coma on our drive back to the hotel.
I've always struggled with Hackney's on Harms...Trying to give it a chance. I think it's a great place to have an outdoor meal, but indoors - forget it. The one thing that grosses me out is that the floors are sticky, probably from years of grease being wiped around.
A lot of my friends like to go to Hackney's, so I usually give in and go with them. The last time we were there we ordered the special 'Reuben egg rolls,' and a 1/2 brick of french fried onions to share. Both were good, but a little too much deep-fried food for me. I also had the Pretzel Burger, which was OK but cooked 'well' instead of the 'medium' I ordered. The fries weren't crispy. I took half of my burger home, and the remaining fries (I thought). The next day when I opened my doggy bag, there were no fries. I was a bit disappointed that they pitched them instead of giving them to me like I requested. Oh well.
And, yes, I'll probably go back with my friends, but Hackney's wouldn't be my first or second choice.
The one star reviews are absolutely accurate. We spent our hard earned money at Hackneys on Harms last night for a family reunion. It was awful.
Six people, including two teenagers, and no one liked anything we had. Their Famous Onion Loaf was a greasy, slimy-tasting brick - fried in a fryer basket with an unseasoned batter. Burgers were tasteless, small, and all the breads and buns were grocery store quality. French fries were soggy and flavorless. Reuben was like a dorm cafeteria sandwich; skimpy and uninteresting. Mac and cheese was inedible; dried out, and resembled dollar store Mac n Cheese in the box. Even the grilled cheese (one family member's THIRD meal he ordered trying to find something good) wasn't very good.
Dessert was equally disappointing. Hackneys World Famous Apple Strudel looked and tasted like it came right out of a cheap grocery store package. Ridiculous.
Ambiance was NOT special. It's an old, not so clean, building on an old lot.
Prices are ridiculous for what they serve; easily double or triple what they should be charging.
What is worse, I called before we came, explained to the manager we were concerned about the bad reviews, and she said they were from disgruntled out of towners who were disappointed because "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" misrepresented them. Yeah, right.
BULL! Â Six out of six dissatisfied customers in our party. Â This is an overpriced, lousy restaurant. Don't waste your precious time or money on this dump.
Ever think of starting a business and daydream of how it will take off in the future...20, 50, 70, 100 years later?! One Glenview, Illinois couple did back in the 1920s.
Check out Hackney's if you love history, good burgers and beer.
The backyard experience is a must.
Imagine burger recipes almost a hundred years old.
Great dedication for the same family that still runs this establishment.
Crowded with families and kids just running around. So, probably not a first date unless you are both a fan of history and simply tasty food.
Ok so I went for dinner last week and it was ok.
Pros: the ambiance
the sweet potato fries
Cons: the men's bathroom was cramped and kinda gross
sauteed onions were way too greasy
the pretzel bun I got was kinda stale, I suggest the dark rye instead by the way you can purchase a loaf to take home with you)
other than that it was ok, nothing spectacular, but I would recommend to go for a few drinks and dinner with friends, though a warning its predominantly an older Anglo crowd....
Sucked. Â What else to add? Â Everyone else has covered it. Â Food was blah, Â Service was blah. Â Cleanliness of the Bathroom was blah. Â
I feel bad because I had some out of town guests. Â They wanted to try something that was on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Â This was the closest place to where they were staying and I regret taking them there.
I am sad to write this review of this old family favorite, but it must be done so that others don't walk away feeling so let down. Just remember Hackney's from your childhood and let it go at that.
1. Waitstaff was horrible. Unable to deliver any item in a timely way, from water to iced tea to the food. Everything was asked for time and again and still there were long periods of time without anything being supplied. They were however very busy setting up the tables for the dinner crowd because apparently that is more important than the people actually sitting there trying to order a lunch.
2. The food delivered to our table was wrong and the check and change was totally wrong. We had to flag down our waitress to get the right food and then let her know she gave us back almost more money than we gave her to pay the bill. She was very confused and befuddled the entire time. If we were people without ethics we could have walked away and paid just a couple of dollars for our lunch.
3. But worst of all was the food. Now I know Hackney's was the place to go to get a good old fashioned burger on dark rye and they could always be counted on for the brick of onion rings. There was nothing better anywhere, but times they are a changin' and I want a bit more variety in my food these days. So tell me how this restaurant can screw up a grilled chicken breast salad? Seriously! It was the most boring, unimaginative, uninspired salad I've ever had and at $11.00 it was insulting.
So I'm officially writing all the Hackney's restaurants off my list of stand bys. Â Not so sorry to say good bye after Friday's fiasco.
I have been here a few times and the draw to this place in my opinion is the outdoor seating area. Â It is in a wooded area with lots of big trees. Â If the weather is good, this can be a very nice place to eat. Â
It seems like the menu has fewer items than I remember in the past. Â I didn't even see a section for non-alcoholic beverages or salads even though there was a salad featured on the specials board. Â
I ended up going with a Hackney burger. Â For the price which was about $10, I would expect a very tasty burger, but this was not. Â I only ate half of it. Â The bun was very plain, no seasoning or toasting. Â Fries were ok. We also got onion rings which were also ok. Â
About the onion rings, be careful when you eat these because they are very greasy and will soak into anything they touch including clothes. Â
The service was friendly. Â The speed of getting food was leisurely. Â Overall I get the impression that they are skimping in areas to try to make more money, but that is never a good idea with a restaurant business because if the overall product and experience is not good, people won't come back.
Had fond memories about Hackney's on Harms from college, but either my memory or the place has slipped a lot. Just went there for a late lunch on Sat afternoon and had to (a) request menus after being seated and no one coming by (and we were seated right in front by the hostess stand/water station/gate), (b) ask for a server to come and take our order after again no one came by after several minutes and no drinks and (c) get up and ask another server for refills after again no one coming by even though all three sodas and a beer were empty for some time. At least the kids got their sodas right away but it was probably 10 min for my beer, at which point we had finished our meals.
Other people around us seemed to be getting better service, so maybe it was just our server - I am not sure but I am not going to go back to find out.
Ambience - 4 stars. Food - 2 stars. Service - 0 stars.
We are moving to a local neighborhood and were excited to try out Hackney's, which is famous in Glenview. If this place ever had a peak it is well past it. The food was the worst I had in years, it is just bland, non-descriptive; makes you feel yucky and lethargic. Â I imagine the retirees that frequent this place don't mind- but the rest of us, accustomed to at least decent food, will find this place as a black hole where flavor goes to never be heard from again.
The prices, for what you get, are crazy. A burger is ten bucks with cheese for a dollar more. The menu is very limited, which you would think allows Hackney's to perfect the few items they sell. Instead they just produce below average burgers and sandwiches. Even something as simple as fries or their onion loaf comes out limp and just soaking in grease.
I cannot imagine this place lasting once the boomers are all gone, morbid but true.
(I do want to say that the staff is nice and efficient. Keep the front-end staff and fire all the cooks.)
Good minestrone soup. Finished soup long wait now to order. Â Oh waitress thought we were waiting for another person.
Ordered chicken salad and inside out burger. Burger was perfect on pretzel bun. Juicy oozing with hot cheese and bacon. Slaw heavy on horseradish. Â
Chicken salad fresh and chicken was tender.
Would have given five except for the wait.
Maybe it's because I didn't grow up in Chicago but I just don't get this place. It seems to be a dining tradition handed down from generation to generation, where you came as a child to bathe in the onion loaf grease and had fond memories of a Hackney burger before McDonalds came to town.
I'm all about cozy dives but this place is in need of some serious TLC, starting with the mens bathroom. The food is bland, greasy and unappealing. Service is average at best.
The only reason this review got an extra star was for the decent beer selection on tap and the outdoor seating which is pleasant in the summer.
From what the staff told me they really stepped it up when Guy came to visit here. The inside-out burger wasn't even on the menu before he visited and was put on there just to impress.
Before I tear this place a new one I'm going to say I didn't like it just because I'm not a burger purist. If you want JUST the flavor of the beef with no extra salt, pepper, unnecessary seasoning of any kind then this burger is for you. My problem is that the food is bland...ridiculously so. They don't salt ANYTHING.
Saving grace is the wonderful old style onion rings, probably the best I've ever had in my life and they serve them so fresh it's no problem that they don't salt them, you can just do it yourself - they're THAT fresh. PURISTS ONLY DO NOT COME HERE FOR A SEASONED BURGER. Service is excellent btw.
Hackney on Harms,
Don't waste your hard earned money on this place.
We saw this restaurant on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, and I have to say I am shocked at how bad the food was! Either that show is a big sham, or this restaurant went all out when he was reviewing them, and got sloppy after. I wish we'd checked Yelp before we went there.
We went in a group of 5, and were told we would have to wait 10-15 minutes. So we got drinks at the bar and waited. The restaurant was packed, like a tin of sardines. The tables are really close together and once we sat down, we were constantly getting bumped by the staff and other patrons.
We ordered their 'brick' of French Fried Onions for appetizers, for the table to share. When they came, they were sitting in a little puddle of oil, and had no flavor to them at all. The batter was completely bland - no salt and no taste, completely soggy, it wasn't even crisp. It was so soggy, that the batter seemed boarder -line raw. One bite of this, and my husband was giving me the I-can't-believe-you-dragged-us-all-here looks, and I realized that the rest of the food was going to be as bad.
I wish they had proven me wrong! I ordered the Inside/ Out Hackneyburger and my husband the original hackneyburger. Mine came with tomatoes and a leaf of lettuce in it, but it was dry. At the absolute center of the burger I got a nice bacon and cheese flavor, but most of it was bland, and what bothered me most was the lack of mayonnaise or anything in it. The restaurant was so busy that I was unable to ask a waitress for any, and when she finally came to the table to ask how everything was, I was almost done.
My husband's burger was even worse. There was nothing in it! No lettuce, tomatoes, nothing! He's lactose-intolerant, and did not ask for cheese to be added, which made it worse. The burger completely lacked flavor, there was absolutely no spice or herbs or salt in it. It tasted like just plain meat. His burger did come with coleslaw on the side, but that was pretty tasteless too. Once again, it lacked any herbs, or salt. It tasted like a little cabbage mixed in a lot of sweet mayonnaise, and that was it. The fries tasted like they had been fried in old reused oil; there was just a hint of fishiness to them. One of our friends had the bison burger, and I took a bite of it. It was as plain and salt-less as our burgers were.
We did order dessert, it was something like an apple strudel, but not very impressive. Not even memorable enough to remember exactly what it was. Altogether, this place was an absolute let down. We went home and watched the Guy Fieri video again, and the burgers he ate seemed to be filled with condiments, looked nothing like ours. In my books Hackney on Harms deservers half a star and nothing more, and since these dishes are standard on all location menus, I doubt they would be much better.
Oh so sad to leave you and not return however, after receiving two turkey burgers ( one was so well done I thought it was literally a hockey puck then the second was under-cooked and raw in the middle) I am now convinced there are far better restaurants to spend my hard earned money at.
While the reuben used to save you from a mediocre review, today's experience was just awful. I actually ordered two turkey burgers and ate a poorly made grilled cheese - how do you mess up a turkey burger and grilled cheese sandwich - ick!!!!
So sad, too bad....I'd rather venture to another place with better food and service.
Two words: terrible experience.
Everyone's raving about how good Hackney's is, so I had high expectations for this place.
First of all, the location. It's hidden behind trees. You WILL pass it up if you're not careful. Another thing was parking. No spots. Anywhere. I don't know if I just came at a busy time or what but it was awhile before someone pulled out.
Moving on to the actual restaurant, you have 2 choices. Eat outside or eat inside.
My family and I chose to eat inside. The seating was very stuffy and cramped. I reached under the table to move it and my hands were greeted by a sticky residue. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands and what an experience that was.
I opened the bathroom door to find piss and water all over the floor. I wasn't even really phased. I gave up on Hackney's back outside in the parking lot. I looked at the ceiling and saw pipes with spiderwebs jutting from the walls. The bathroom literally felt like a supply closet. When I eventually washed my hands, there was no means to dry them. The paper towel dispenser was either empty or broken and the hand dryer WAS broken. Please, at least clean the bathroom periodically.
Our waitress was friendly, but she was never there when you really needed her.
When we got our food there was quite a mix up with the order, none to big though. Family brushed it off. When I got my burger, I was literally staring at it, contemplating suicide. It was just meat in between two slices of bread. Supposedly you're suppose to tell them that you want lettuce/tomatoes. Good thing our waitress didn't inform us. Pretty sure anywhere else, it's normal for the lettuce and tomato to come with the burger already. The burger itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't outstanding. I got the InsideOut Burger. Their keylime pie on the other hand was actually tasty.
A lot of people are probably going to disagree with me about Hackney's. I definitely don't plan on ever coming back here and if I do, it was because I was forced to.
Went here after a round of golf at a local North Shore course, and was really impressed by Hackneys.  The feel of the old speak easy that it was off the beaten path was really neat, the fact that they have a giant  beer garden in the back is also super cool. Â
This was the first time I was at a hackneys', and would definitely come back. Â Started off with the onion loaf, which to me was just a blooming onion (from outback) without the dipping sauce, it was good but not as great as I anticipated, after hearing so much about it.
My entree was a Reuben, and being a Reuben connoisseur, hackneys had a lot to live up to. Â It was a tasty sandwich that had a good blend of all the key ingredients of a Reuben, but was a little lacking in the quantity of the meat. Â Otherwise this is a 5 star Reuben. Â
I like that they serve their fries family style, since I never usually eat too many and need a whole order to myself, and the staff was super friendly and inviting. Â Anytime I'm in the area I'll make a point to stop here in the future.
I have always went to the location on Lake and thought I would try the Harms location.
What can I say the place has a "Backwoods Wisconsin" feel. The roof looks like it is in need repair. The inside is very much dated. Â After going to the Lake Ave. location I would never guess they are the same place.
The people were nice and friendly.
As for the food,
We started off with the Onion Loaf. YUM! The onions were tender inside and crispy on the outside with a little bit of grease. But it was such a great starter!
The cheese burger was very juicy and had a great flavor. Â The grilled onions were nice and sweet. I understand they make there own rolls and it showed.
So the food was very good.
Will I return to Hackney's? yes.
Will I return to this location? no. The Lake Ave location is much nicer.
This is the first time I have been to this location and I almost missed it! Â I saw the sign, but the driver didn't. Â It is tucked away in a neighborhood. Â I love the old fashioned feel of the place, it really brings you in. Â The manager was explaining to the bartender how to pour specific beers. Â I could really tell he took pride in it.
It was kind of awkward though when we first went in because there were several staff/hosts but they were like "seat yourselves." Â Since we were not regulars, we weren't really sure where to go, so we went to sit in a back booth, and it took the server 10 minutes to notice we were there (we were talking and didn't really notice anyway). Once our server found us, she was very sweet and apologized the service was great.
The food was your typical food you would expect. Â The onion block was good, and the half order was HUGE for 2 people. I had the fish and chips, and my friend had the Hackney's burger, but he said that he prefers Chili's burgers.
Given its location, scenery, historical nature and down to earth menu, I don't expect gourmet outta this place. Â Its like that old school place that everyone loves because its honest, dependable and they have massively delicious onion rings which come in a huge greasy clump! Â God, they're heaven sent.
Their beer garden is super awesome and big enough to allow a sense of total relaxation and amity to come over me.......allowing me to pour way too much beer down me gullet too!
Just realzzzz darn cute and one of a kind. Â Happy to work nearby and always know its there ready for me to sit, drink and consume fried onions. Â ;)
Their wait staff is really pleasant too. Â Clearly the GM likes college aged girls.
I heard about this place from a buddy of mine. Decided to give it a whirl one night. We drove by it like four times without even knowing it. The street that it's on has no street lights. Whammy.
Staff was welcoming and very friendly. Both of us heard glorious things about the Hackneyburger, so we both ordered one. I was a little disappointed with the lack of other ingredients [I didn't know that I had to request lettuce and tomato]. Double whammy. Â The burger itself was very good, though. Another plus is the bottomless fries. They weren't extraordinary, but I love bottomless anything.
Overall, my experience was a-ok. I'd like to give this place another shot and try the buffalo burger and the inside-out burger. Hopefully I can find the place easier next time.
Women tottering around in 4 inch heels on uneven paver bricks. Kids running around screaming and playing. Yeah- quite the place to be seen!
Hackney's is loved by many- and if  obnoxious kids with adoring (but obviously hearing impaired) parents were not there polluting the peace, it would have made the place better. We are talking about 8-10 screaming kids. No one seemed to think it was a problem, an issue, or even out of the ordinary. Call me a crabby ass- but really. I had to wonder for a second if we were at Chuckie cheese- then I saw the woman with 3inches of pancake makeup- skintight pants and low cut shirt and 4 inch heels out to lunch with her college aged son(?). I slowly remembered, nope- not CC- just in the northern burbs!
So- off the ambiance and onto the food. I had a grilled cheese. Yeah- really exciting. We even splurged an extra dollar for a slice of tomato on top (high class place and all). My grilled cheese was good. Instead of giving us each fries, they gave my friends and I a plate of fries to share- and told us we could ask for more. It was not a large plate by any means- but considering i was not eating them- no problem. My guys enjoyed their food.
The place could be fun to hang out at. I felt like I was in a huge back yard with a waitress to help me out. It was not too fancy, drinks might have been great.
Instead, I was internally cheering for pancake face to trip and fall, and for the kids to SHUT UP! Yeah- I had a killer headache- but really, there were other patrons there. It seems that these people felt it was their right to make the entire space their back yard. The waitstaff did not seem to care.
I would return- but make sure that anyone with kids that do not know how to control their sound output was not present.
Now retracting claws, back in the city! Whew!
Of all the Hackney's this one is by far the best.
I've extolled the virtues of Hackney's in reviews of its other locations, but I suppose it bears repeating here. Â A hackneyburger, medium rare with swiss cheese and grilled onions plus a half brick of onions is pretty much my perfect indulgence. Â Burgers cooked and seasoned perfectly. Â And the half brick... mmm.... Â getting hungry!!
Anyway, on to why this location is the best. Â Ambiance ambiance ambiance. Â And a great outdoor area in the summer. Â Love the tucked away location, small restaurant feel.
I think Hackney's evokes nostalgia in people who grew up coming here. If I were one of those people I would probably give it 4 stars, but I am not, so I'm giving it 3 stars.
As another reviewer mentioned, it is a secluded location. There is a house on the property and the actual restaurant part that you eat in was the chicken coop back in the day (or that is what I've been told).
The presentation of the onion brick is more interesting than how it tastes. It really is a brick of fried, shoe string onion rings. The appeal of the Hackney burger, for me, is that it comes on rye bread. I went with the 4 oz. burger and it was the perfect size. I ordered it medium but I think it was cooked just a bit under medium, which is still fine with me. Â Washed down with a Stella, my Hackney's meal hit the spot.
Original and still the best!
Hackneys has a number of locations in the general Chicago area but this one tops. It can be a bit hard to find, especially at night, as the building is tucked away back in a FOREST, with nothing to indicate the location but a sign at the end of the long driveway.
The building has a kind of secluded feel, like some of the restaurants I recall from my trip through Norway's northern countryside. Smallish and cozy, quite oldskool European visually.
Great burgers and the legendary onion ring bricks are not to be missed.
Good for the whole family and won't empty your wallet.
I love Hackney's on Harms. I love the outdoor terrace in the summer, right behind the owners house. The huge old trees above you. In winter, I love the combination old barge/old 1960's rec room feel of the indoor bar & restaurant, which always seems full of locals, none of them hip, pretentious, holier-than-thou urbane types. A Pretty geriatric crowd, in fact, most of the time. And it's great fun eavesdropping on their conversations. Â Anyway, a trip out to Glenview ends up being a refreshing day trip from city to a place that is not so far away but it feels like Wisconsin. Just a nice cheap and quick change of scenery.
I also love their burgers because they are tender, and taste so fresh you would think they just ground up the cow out back. Of course the onion loaf makes the trip worthwhile in itself. Two people can easily share the half order. Â Because I don't go there frequently, I haven't had many other menu items other than the burgers and sandwiches. Service is always dependable and the staff always knowledgeable and friendly.
Hackney's on Harms also makes a good stop in summer if you take the bike path north from Caldwell Woods at Devon And Peterson. You can do a healthy ride up to the Chicago Botanic Gardens, and get off the path on your way home to stop at Hackney's. A 40 mile round-trip bike ride takes away the guilt of that brick of fried onions you're about to consume! (And you may need to make another stop for Mylanta if you didn't take your little purple pill beforehand.:-)
For someplace with such a quintessentially lovely fried appetizer -- the much lauded onion loaf -- their french fries certainly do suck. Â Really, they are pallid, tasteless things that have spent most of their lives in the freezer. The waitress promised us a "bottomless" plate to share, but the ones we got weren't even worth finishing. Â
I also have to dis the Hackney Burger. Â Pre-formed, ovoid, with no discernible grilled taste. Â I ordered a salad from the specials list (to make up for indulging in the aforementioned onion loaf) which was just fine, but the bite I took from hubby's burger reminded me why I never liked the things.
This Hackney's is an institution -- it has been open since 1939. Like the North Shore brat I am, I've had many meals here over many years. Â But other than the onions and history, there really isn't that much going for it.
Hackney's is one of those places that has been around so long, that your memories have memories of it.
Started in 1939 and family-owned, it has remained a family business throughout its long history on the North Shore. Â Its wooded location just adjacent to the Forest Preserve gives you the sensation that you are eating dinner at your grandfather's country club, fresh from a round of golf...but with better beer and no golf. Â
The original location has a small, traditional menu centered around the famous Hackneyburger. Â The best bread to eat it on is the rye. Â Lettuce and tomato come on the side, on a separate plate, and if your stomach is up to it, the grilled onions make the perfect topper. Â What I think is great is that now you can also get a turkey burger or buffalo burger, and the chicken is organic and free-range. Â It is the perfect blend of old-world and new-world sensibilities.
The best place to sit is outside on a warm night. Â You have to put your name on a list, which can result in a long wait at this popular location. Â But there is a nice seating area where you can have a beer or cocktail and there is an old playhouse for the kiddies, so it's not that bad.
Of course, you can't go to Hackney's without trying their famous brick of fried onions. Â Once you emerge from this mound of tasty goodness, with onions dribbling from your chin and the telltale shiny face, you will have been inducted into the Hackney's register of happy customers.
Summer dresses, cold beer and Hackney's. Â Good times.
I haven't been here for years, but I had pleasant thoughts of the onion loaf last night. Wonderful burgers served on rye - it's quite the insitution. I remember trying buffalo (er, bison) for the first time here as well. Delicious.
I might have to head on over next time I'm visiting the folks.
Hackney's is always a favorite. Â This was the first time I had ever been to the one on Harms. Â I was expecting a stuffy atmosphere, bein gin the North Shore, and was suprised to find that it was very laid back. Â A little gross considering they just got over the infestation of cicedas.
As for the food, you have to get the fired onion block. Â Is is just a huge mound of battered and fried onions and tastes ohhh so good. Â Their ruben sandwich is to die for! Â It's just how it should be greasy and covered in dressing. Â Being pregnant makes this my new favorite spot to indulge my cravings.
I only gave it four stars because our waiter was not very friendly and kept getting out drink orders wrong. Â He really didn't want to be working and you could tell.
There are many reasons I prefer trips to Chicago:
-There are no idiotiotic fake-politically-correct Californians giving me dirty looks for wearing sexy Fox Fur Hat
-Great shopping on the Magnificent Mile for designer clothes and brazilian bikinis (I always shop for bikini in the snow, but thats another story)
-Ira Glass.. if only he were in the dressing room whist shopping for brazilian bikini...
-The HackneysBurger from famed Hackney's Tavern.
If you too are in the neigborhood, don't miss a trip to Hackney's, for a scrumptious hackney's burger on black bread before a long night ov vodka drinking in the blizzards of Chicago.
Wonderful outdoor dining hidden in an otherwise upscale residential neighborhood. Â The tables are just patio furniture (complete with umbrellas) but the trees & gentle breeze make for a relaxed retreat. Â I ate indoors once but found the interior cramped and dark.
In response to the other reviewers, YES, the burgers are good - BUT there are lots of other good options if you're not in the mood for a burger. Â Their fish fry is light and not at all greasy. Â They also have daily specials that can be quite good. Â
My recommendation is to take a half-day some beautiful Friday this Summer and head over for a long lunch at Hackney's.
There's a little white playhouse in the corner of the outdoor seating area that I used to play in when I was little. And while that is looking a bit decrepit these days, Hackney's hasn't changed a bit.
The onions. Gotta get the onions. Smother them in ketchup. By the end, the fork will be thrown to the side and your fingers will be red and greasy. Mmmmmm....
And the burgers. And the salads. And the soups. Everything. Hackney's is yummy.
Inside: dark wood and cozy booths with a bar serving the old-timers (or regulars) who are probably wearing deck shoes and a polo shirt, but anyways...
Outside: awesome outdoor dining. Bring bugspray (especially for dinner). Seriously. Its kinda in the shade, surrounded by trees and shubbery and, well, thats where the bugs hang out. Good times.
Hackney's makes me think of summer and families and nice people. Whatever that means....
Going with a group of 5 or more ?  Definitely head to the Lake Street location (just east of Waukegan Rd - where they can accommodate larger groups  - AND  it always helps to call first for "reservations".)
But couples and/or parties of 4 or less should head over to the original Hackney's on Harms which has the same good food but in a more more intimate, other (past) worldly atmosphere with a nameless kind of charm about it.
Unless you simply must have your burger on a traditional bun - definitely have it on the outstanding dark rye with (as reviews of the Lake St. location have suggested - unless you hate onions order the burger with the full specturm of onion options ( the raw and grilled that come with the burger- comp on request) and just go for broke and get a FULL order of the fried onion rings (only $1+ Â more than the half order;- they make for a yummy appetizer and an excellent extra layer of indulgent goodness when added on top of the burger. Communal fries come with most orders and are better than average.
To  those of us who grew up eating or at least knowing about Hackney's - NOT ordering a Burger  (especially on the Pumpernickel rye) almost seems sacrosanct - but there are other good options (many go for the Reuben  or the Frrench DIp - or  the unusually good Vegetarian grilled cheese and tomato (on your choice of bread - I recommend the dark rye.)
I don't mean to exaggerate or raise undue expectations - this is just a really good burger (including the Buffalo  burger which is remarkably moist - considering  the lean-ness.) Both the  Lake St. and  Harms locations are worthy considerations for the right kinds of occasions.
