On occasion I visited the facilities for lunch since they are located in my office building. Nothing exceptional, but quick when I was busy with work and needed to run down for a cup of soup or a salad. This morning I stopped in for a bagel, plain, nothing on it. I was charged $1.33!!! Plain bagel that barely matches Jewel or Dominick's quality and where the avarage price is .49. Â I felt raped. 3x mark up on already marked up retail price doesn't seem reasonable especially that the bagel doesn't require any additional preparation (i.e. making soup, salad or sandwich).
What I was most surprised is an opened box of Tetley tea on the countertop available for sale. The tea packets were not individually wrapped or protected in any way whatsoever. Anyone who just sneezed or wiped their behind can stick their hand into the box and grab their tea. I found that completely gross and wondered if the health department really allows this type of practice.
Needless to say, this was the last time I took the convenience of Halsted Street Deli. Overpriced and unsanitary, Methinks DEFINITELY NOT.
I ordered the corned beef sandwich with swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and spicy mustard on marble rye bread. The sandwich was very good, but overall I was dissatisfied with the price ($9) for the amount of food I received. On the menu, the description of the sandwich said something around the lines of "layers and layers of meat" and when I received it I was underwhelmed. I make larger sandwiches at home.
The perks of this restaurant include: location, cleanliness, service, and style.
Most likely, I am one and done at this place but it was a good lunch. If the sandwich was half it's price or twice as large, I would reconsider coming back.
three words: delicious, healthy and cheap. Everytime I go there, I order either Tom Turkey or Triple Decker; Triple Decker is so big, that you can keep half as a pre-dinner appetizer. I've had chilly couple of times, it was yummi as well. Definitely recommend as quick sandwich lunch place.
Review Source:I got introduced to this place from a co-worker & thank his soul!!
I must say, every time I eat there, I'm real happy and know it's always a good choice to fall back on. Â Their soups are great - always extremely hot, so don't burn your tongue - must say the Tuesday Cuban bean & sausage is my favorite. Â The sandwiches are large and fresh. Â It's a great deal for $8 to get a soup, 1/2 sandwich and a drink.
Oh yeah, the service is super speedy so if you're in a hurry, go here.
Nice shop but they are stingy on the condiments. I got a pastrami sandwhich and I got the meat (I wanted the meat) but I didn't get the lettus, tomato, onion or was even offered cheese.
This is unacceptable, in my opinion, for an $8 sandwhich. I know I'm downtown Chicago and not in New York but man they could have put the works on this over priced lack of a meal!
I will return when I feel as though they've added value to their offerings and you should do the same.
Did we go to the same place? Â I also work in the building, and Halsted St. Deli is my "alamo" lunch (too much crap to do or it's raining/snowing) - I'll suffer through one of their very mediocre sandwiches. Â With Potbelly's and Perry's a 3 minute walk away, I'm genuinely surprised with the prior positive reviews.
Review Source:I work in the building, so it's very convenient to have a place like this in the lobby!
Cheap eats - I paid about $6 for a decent sized sandwich and a drink. Works for me!
Good food. EXTREMELY quick service! I needed to pick up food for a lunch meeting and there were a couple people ahead of me. I needed 3 sandwiches and 2 large cups of soup. By the time I finished telling them I needed the soups, everything else was bagged up and ready to go. Fantastic.
I'm definitely going to have to try it again, possibly boost this to 5 stars. :)
My experience was completely different from James. Â I've been here a few times since it's right across the street from my office and I love it. Â I get the turkey sandwich and it's fantastic. Â There is more then enough meat but it's not so huge that you can't eat it. Â I get full from just the sandwich and I like to eat. Â The service is extremely quick and my favorite part is the warm bread, you can't get better then that. Â The sandwich is $4.95 and for as much as you get on it, you can't beat it. Â
I can't wait to try breakfast because if it's as good as lunch, I've found my new breakfast spot.
