Considering the availability of restaurants on Taylor Street, I would rank Hana as a preferable (but more expensive) option for sushi compared to Ichiban. There also aren't as many Chinese restaurants available, so Hana will fulfill your Americanized Chinese food cravings.
The restaurant is clean, decor is modern, and their service is polite. I would personally go elsewhere on Taylor for Thai food, but they have a good portion for their Chinese  (unfortunately, Americanized and slightly on the greasier side [had their fried rice]) dishes and decent sushi. Food-wise, the restaurant is slightly below average.. but their ambiance (good noise level and presentation) and service bumps their overall score.
They recently raised the lunch special price. It used to be the best deal on taylor street. It's still a pretty good deal but those extra 75 cents or so can add up.
The staff is always friendly when I come in to pick up my food (I have never dined in but will most likely try it since UIC students get 15% off).
Fabulous Pad Se Ew!
The pad thai has a good taste, but it is covered in sauce, so it seems a little sloppy.
The LUNCH specials are super cheap, some aren't too bad, some you could go without. I love the combination lo main, but it is a little greasy. You get a TON of food, so there isn't much to complain about there.
The sweet potato sushi isn't that great. It isn't as sweet as I'm used to.
The service is pretty decent.
All in all,the pad se ew is the reason I keep coming back, along with the cheap lunch.
We live around the corner so the boyfriend and I eat in or take out here at least twice a month. Â I mostly stick to sushi (not bad) and standard Chinese dishes (good) but the boyfriend always tries something new and is always happy. Â
We have never had a bad server and take out is SUPER fast. Â
The atmosphere is a little weird but the prices can't be beat and the servings are huge - even the crab rangoon are super-sized. Â I hope this place sticks around!
Also, it's BYOB if you're looking to enjoy a beer or wine with your meal.
WORDS TO LIVE BY: LUNCH SPECIAL
Hana Sushi restaurant has an amazing deal of 5.75 for a HUGE portion of food with a side of crab ragoon. I have been to this restaurant a total of 3 times so far and can't stop eating the lunch special (General Tao's Chicken to be exact). People, please stop by and experience what I am talking about.
I can understand how the restaurant can be confusing. They offer Chinese, Thai and Japanese cuisine all under one roof. The menu is this montage of all 3, and its a lot to take in at first glance. I have yet to venture outside of the Chinese and Japanese realm here, and not sure that I want to..
Back to my lunch special, the chicken fried rice is fresh,non-greasy and a great compliment to the main dish. I hate that stale, greasy mess I usually get at most Chinese joints. Hana prepares everything fresh, which is great for (shall I say it again?) $5.75!
The Yelp reviews of this place are baffling to me because it is one of the highest rated Asian restaurants in Chicago on GrubHub AND they have been perfect for me.
I should offer some disclaimers.
I've only 'GrubHub'ed' the place so I have no idea what service or the environment at their actual location are like.
I've never ordered any of the Chinese dishes or any of the noodle specialties.
I've exclusively had their sushi, fried rice and some of the smaller starters like wings and egg rolls.
With that in mind, I have no issues recommending the place. The fried rice with everything is easily 3 normal servings and comes packed well in a plastic (large) plastic bowl with clear lid.
The sushi is always fresh and ample as well. Typically, my girl and I order their $30 special and it's too much to eat.
No, it's not fine dining but it's pretty tasty and a great value if you stick to what I've listed above.
There are too many great options for Sushi and Thai food in this city. This is not one of them.
Mongolian Beef- More like 2 lbs of onions with a 6 oz of beef. What little beef was there was tender but was overpowered by the onions.
Vegetable fried rice tasted as if the vegetables were frozen and the rice was flavorless.
Sweet and sour chicken has a good sauce but where's the chicken?
Tom Yum soup tasted like lemon grass water. The flavors were very unbalanced.
The only reason they got 2 stars was because of the Hot and Sour soup was good but not great. The flavors were there but it was over thickened. Almost like a gelee. The food here is boring and uninspired. Very sad.
Food is good but today is 95 degree and their air conditioner is broken. They apologized a lot. The weird things are they announce 15% discount for students. We shown them our student cards but they said we ordered special then we were not eligible for the discount.....I looked into my order, only two rolls special, other two dishes, Pad Thai and coconut smoothie, are just regular. I am still confused about it.
Review Source:I've had food from here twice so far. The Singapore Noodles were pretty good. The lunch specials are really cheap also - $5.75 for a huge helping of chicken fried rice and an entree, along with 2 crab rangoons. It's Americanized Chinese food so obviously don't expect anything too spectacular, but it's a cheap food joint and it tastes good.
Review Source:I am what you call a Yelp lurker. I use Yelp religiously, but I never write my own reviews. Until now, for a good reason. My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this restaurant while taking a walk on Taylor, and decided to go here since I support small establishments. The food here is subpar. I ordered beef pad Thai and it came out a sopping, greasy mess. I've been to tons of Thai places in Chicago enough to know you really cannot mess this dish up. I mean, who puts baby corn and mushrooms in pad Thai? The only thing that saved the dish were the beef pieces, which I picked at. My boyfriend's dish was incredibly bland, but the absolute worst part of the meal was the peach smoothie. I did not taste any fruit in it whatsoever, and would not be surprised if they told me it was made of ice, sugar, and food coloring. I was tempted to send it back, but being courteous, I decided to wait until I left the restaurant to dump it out in a garbage can. The staff was also extremely annoying; our server never came back after I told her I wanted some hot sauce, but I found her awkwardly flirting with the group of old men next to us. I was bitter that we even left a tip at this place. Never coming back!
Review Source:This would be the third Grand Opening sign I've seen in the window of this restaurant over the past year. Due to no fault of their own, they occupy a somewhat awkward position on Taylor St., in the doldrums between West and East campus of UIC. Sadly, they're bound to miss out on a large lunch crowd. In an effort to attract more people, they expanded their culinary repertoire from strictly Japanese to pan-Asian - Japanese, Chinese and Thai. I hope they do well. Their food isn't the best, and the value is pretty standard - although I heartily recommend their Chinese lunch specials, which offer quite a lot for a humble $6. Maybe it's just because I like rooting for the underdog - and what with all the other Asian cuisine on Taylor St., all of which have better locations than Hana, they certainly are the underdog - I do hope they succeed this time around.
I haven't tried Hana's sushi, so I can't respond to the other reviewer's comments, but as for Chinese Food, I trust the quality of food more than China Night, which is the only other Chinese restaurant in the area.
