I loved this place.  Once you step inside, fumes of burning meat flow to your nostrils. I love that!  The huge portions of nachos with the works is crazy big.  It is enough for two people to eat for dinner.  With my sticky fingers and poaching pretty much my entire friend's meal, I barely had room to eat my burrito. This meal that I ordered was good for three people.  It had everything inside: mushrooms, zucchini, cheese, rice, etc.  It was very filling.  Sadly, I could not take it to go.  They also make their own beer.  Just thought you should know.

Warning: It gets REALLY HOT during the summer. The waitress said since it's an old building, temperature stay at like 79 degrees when the place is filled. It was HOT. Almost too hot for me to concentrate on my food and company.

Food: Restaurant Week 2013-Here's the breakdown:
-Moon Salad-Good mix of veggies and dressing. The only complaint I have is the plate size. The plate was tiny and it barely fit all the salad on it...pieces of veggies would fall off as I put my fork to the plate. A little frustrating to make such a mess for the salad round. I suggest they invest in a bigger plate or bowl for their salads....
-Pesto Chicken-Good mix of flavors, comes with garlic mashed potatoes and a roasted tomatoes and peppers thing that was really yummy-tinge of sweetness in flavoring. You get a half chicken so def. a big meal. Chicken was on the dry side though-once my guest got through the drumstick, the breast was not as appetizing due to the dry outside and inside...
-Arctic Salmon-Very well made salmon with good cous cous side and a little tomato salsa too. I liked this dish over all very well. The portion was a little small for me-It was a small strip of Salmon-left my wanting more.
-Bourbon Creme Brulee -nice custard bottom with a crispy caramelized top. Bourbon was a bit strong for my taste. Good for burbon lovers though.
-Fried Bread Pudding Bites-I liked the combination of the caramel ice cream and the bread pudding bites. I think the bread pudding was a little TOO bready for me though, nothing really special about it-just literally fried piece of bread with ice cream.

Good Restaurant Week experience... but the heat def. put a damper on things. It was hot to the point where both of us were wiping sweat off of us after every bite. =/ Very unpleasant.

Easily my favorite bar in NB. They have a number of hand-crafted beers on tap, but I always end up having the Belgian Wit or whatever variation of wheat beer they're offering that night. It can be a bit noisy and seating's somewhat limited, but I'm a shameless fan of Top 40 and that's pretty much what they play.

If you like all types of beer this is the olace to go.  They have some if the best and unique ipa beers ive ever tasted.  The bartenders over there are super chill and friendly

Was traveling for business with some colleagues who wanted casual fare with beers--the hotel we stayed at recommended this place. Casual it is, and beers they are good at.  Ordered a Berliner Weiss, and they cautioned me about the bitter/sour taste but I was game.  I appreciated the heads up, but the beer was actually quite crisp, clean and not as sour/bitter as had been warned.  Definitely not for the average pilsner/ale drinker, but not overly offensive.  I actually enjoyed it.   The food was basic--our table ordered salmon, fish and chips and flat iron pork.  However the timing was was off--meals arrived 30 minutes after ordering.  And salads arrived after we started eating entrees.  In fact, my meal was finished when they brought my salad.  At that point, sorry, too late, so I sent it back.  Desserts took another 20 minutes to arrive.  They were the chocolate chip cookie bread puddings.  Very tasty, but got loads of chocolate, not sure where the cookie was hiding.  They should've just called it a chocolate bread pudding and I would have been equally happy.  Server was nice and polite, but not the swiftest girl with drink refills and checking on our table. Seemed more like a college hangout than an adult restaurant so will leave it at that.

Their burgers are SO GOOD. The last time I was here in April, I ordered the Harvest Moon burger and a pint of their Elmes' Mild Manor beer. The menu is fairly varied for a bar/tavern and their appetizers are worth the price. I always intend to order something new, but I can't resist the smell of a good burger wafting my way from another table. Having only been seated on the ground floor, I can vouch that the service there is generally polite, prompt and unobtrusive. The second floor boasts a larger dining room and seems to be geared toward groups with reservations.

For someone planning to stop by for just a drink, the bar looks fairly intimidating from happy hour onwards. There are TVs showing different sports teams around the bar. During the school year, the crowd appears to be split 50-50 between working professionals and college students. This is a good stop for a casual date, or a dinner with a small group of friends. It's nice to avoid the usual divey crowd.

My wife and I went on our first date here in 2007 and the food+beer sucked.

Fast forward to 2013 and Harvest Moon has a new chef, a new head brewer, and a new assistant brewer.

Food: great and consistent. The menu doesn't change much, but what they've got is good. Every once in a while, they do special beer dinners and the chef gets to do more creative dishes that are KILLER (bacon and whiskey infused creme brulee with frozen bananas).

Beer: fantastic. It's the best game in town. They have a few beers on the menu all the time, but the brew team is into smaller runs of interesting, creative, and tasty beers. They like to experiment and push the boundaries on what can be done. And the best part is, they always taste good.

Service: Good. No complaints. From the door to the table and back out again folks are courteous, nice, and inconspicuous.

Our server may have been new.  Smiled, but didn't know the answers. Hubby was about to select a beer yet the server didn't bother to ask if it was our 1st time nor if we wanted the sampler.  I couldn't find the sampler on any menu.  I asked, he said sure.  Asked what IPA meant, he didn't know.  Asked what was the tiny chucks in our dessert, he didn't know.  But he did get the answers. LOL  I wanted a sparkling rose.  He kinda waivered.  I just picked something else. Food was served promptly.

Hummus is good. The Hot & Cold dessert is YUM! When I read the description I thought yuck.  It was the reviews here that got us to order it.  Hot & Cold is a winner.  Hubby enjoyed sampler.

Our entree was the special.  Pardon me if I sound a bit Top Chef-ish: Pork was thoroughly cooked - fell off the bone.  Didn't care for the presentation of the pork.  Big portion of pork still on a thick bone, not appeasing to me.  Think The Flintstones.  It needed seasonings.  We didn't finish it, got the rest to go.  The grilled artichokes was king in the dish.  If we go back I would try a sandwich, or pizza.

We got there too early for the live music. Darn.  Next time.

I have been to Harvest Moon a few times now. Its an older building on George Street in New Brunswick's downtown district. The building is two story, with the bar and tables on the first floor. There is a larger dining room upstairs. The bar area also has several TV's and is popular when the NY teams are on. Also from the lower level, the brewery vats can be seen. The upstairs is warm and inviting and they have kept the original oak staircases, and wood trim from the building's past.

In my opinion, the food is what shines  at Harvest Moon. The beer is good also, and they have several on tap. The food is very, very good for a pub setting and the menu a bit varied. They have a good choice of salads, and sandwiches, and standard pub fare such as fish & chips. Harvest Moon also has a Pad Thai that is different but very good, Hong Kong Hummus, Pork Flat Iron, pasta , etc. Everything we have tried has been very good. Even the Fish & Chips are very good, in a light beer battered tempura batter.

Be sure to try the desserts too. The warm sweet potato chips and cinnamon ice cream was very good and can be shared by 2-3 people. The service has always been decent to very good also. This is another time I wish I could give 3.5-3.75 stars.

There is a public lot nearby for $6.00. The place can get very crowded on the weekends also.

Beer is GREAT, food is FANTASTIC. The Chef could easily be working in a 5 Star restaurant, so he must love what he does. Everything I've ever had here was fantastic. We live a half hour away, and still we rarely go to any other restaurant.

The beer menu is great and has good variety. The brewer is very good at what he does.

You can sit downstairs in the bar area, or enjoy a more private dinner upstairs in a cozy booth.

I wouldn't change a single thing about this restaurant.

i love the food at harvest moon- everything i've tried has been fantastic, and the valentine's day menu was one of the best meals i've ever had (since there's so little fine dining in central nj, this is the 'fanciest' place we can find with a good price/portions ratio). the wings are delicious and huge, the nachos are great, the steaks are always cooked perfectly.

the only problem is, of course, the crowd. i expected this place to be packed with undergrads given its proximity to rutgers, and sometimes it is, but more often i find stifling crowds of boring suburban norm-y dads talking too loud, puzzling over their smartphones, and taking up more space than they should.  frustrating too was the time my partner and i went to dinner here and almost the entire upstairs was taken up by a birthday party for a child who couldn't have been more than ten (and the service was super slow because the party brought a cake that the staff had to cut up and serve).  a brew pub, perfect place to celebrate your ninth birthday.

Some of the beers are pretty good.  Food is decent for a bar.

The reason for the low rating is because of the way the restaurant is run.  Last time I was there I was with a group of eight or so people for a birthday party.  Some people were eating, all of us were drinking.  They had closed off the upstairs already, which makes absolutely no sense, and so space was tight.  We all wanted to stand near each other so hung out near the left side of the bar.  We left walking distance from the kitchen hall, but an employee asked us to move.  We asked if some of us could move to a bar table and we were told no by someone who I believe may have been the manager.  Not more than three minutes later a group of three scantily clad women sat down at the bar table we had our eye on.  The manager proceeded to flirt with them and then join them at their table right in front of us.

I don't understand why they close off the upstairs so early..  They have a full dining area upstairs, but they close it off early to pack people into the downstairs like sardines and then complain when the establishment gets crowded.  Puzzling.

Quality food with quality home brewed beer. They are doing it right at HM. Sometimes I'll stop in for just a drink. I've only eaten here twice but the food was very good both times. They do not have many if any Vegetarian meals so that is kind of what prevents me from coming more often. It's not a huge place up stairs is just for dining and downstairs has a more casual bar as well as some tables. There isn't too much I can say that most reviews have not said already so I'll keep it short. Harvest Moon is a nice place putting out quality product.

There are many places to go for a beer in New Brunswick, NJ however when one hears the word 'brewery' the decision to go is relatively quick! :)

I've been coming to Harvest Moon since I turned twenty one and was still a Rutgers student - I still come back for happy hour and late night celebrations with friends. This place is a favorite of my co-workers as well since we are just down the street in the corporate offices! Great place for happy hour in a casual atmosphere with great summer time openness to people watch while enjoying cold drafts! During happy hour there are $5 beers and $20 pitchers (you get 5 beers out of a pitcher saving you five bucks!). Great selection of brews - start with the lightest and advance through to the darkest. I personally enjoy the amber lagers when they have them.

The appetizers here are spot on - highly suggest the wings, calamari, moon nachos, and the quesadillas.

This place gets pretty packed for happy hour and the evenings - especially during the weekends when they have live bands! Non the less still a great place to get a beer and share good times with good people.

First thing I do when I walk into a brewery for the very first time is order a beer flight (sampler).  This palette of flavor guides my dining decision making and influences my overall impression of a brewery/eatery.  HM only had 7 beers on tap, but had an 8 sampler tray.  Because of this shortcoming, they offered another 4oz sample of our favorite from the 7.  They had the Moonlight Kolschbier (German), Belgian Wit, Elmes Mild Manor (British), Monkeyshine Weizenbock, Paddy's Irish Stout, Cluster Double IPA and Dark Side of the Moon Black IPA.  As with everything, beer preference is personal, but I will comment on the range of offerings.  The beers were to my liking.  They seemed to have everything covered, though I would've liked to see an American Pale Ale in the mix.  Apparently it is currently being brewed.

Moving to the food, the menu is decidedly asian and italian inspired with a spattering of typical bar food, i.e. pizza, burgers, wings, etc.  Clearly identity is an issue, but hey they make some really good beer.  I ordered the seared tuna salad.  While the tuna was flavorful, with a sesame seed crusting and the right amount of searing, it was definitely lacking in volume.  It came with only 3 smallish pieces.  I know it's a salad, but come on!  I expected more.  The food came out quickly, but the wait service never refilled my water.  It was happy hour so the bar area was crowded, and the dining area was surprising filled (both downstairs and up), for 6:30p on a Wednesday night.  It is a local watering hole in a college town, so expect it busy on most nights.  So overall I'd give it a 3 for the food/service/etc and a plus 1 for the beer.  I will be back and try something else, but I would say go for the beer, because the food is secondary.

    Staff - 3
    Taste - 3
    Ambience - 4
    Menu - 3
    Price/Presentation - 3/3

Lovely architecture and atmosphere ruined by rude staff, almost decent beer, and not even close to decent food. My entire entourage was extremely disappointed in their dishes, from the overly salty calamari to the stale bread on a tasteless burger. It also didn't help that we had just OK beer to wash it all down. Not worth it.

Every college town should have a Harvest Moon. It's priced just out of reach for undergrads, but not so high it should only be reserved for special occasions.

The beer is fresh--brew dates are on the wall with ABVs and other critical details--and if you want a more complete experience, interview the brewmaster about his work; he may be sitting at the bar. (I assumed he was the brewmaster from the way he was talking about beer all afternoon and from the bushy bird's nest hanging from his chin).

Every one of the wide, carpeted stairs squeak. The paint is not new. This is not a place you'd describe using the word "decor."

Given the above, you might just expect chicken fingers and cheese fries, but that's where you'd be mistaken. The menu at Harvest Moon initially is an eyebrow raiser--could this place actually do crab and avocado well? And the specials board really intrigued me--saffron chicken soup with kale? White pizza with fresh garlic, broccoli, and ricotta? Really?

Really. If anything, the wings impressed me the least. That crab stack was fresh and succulent, and the pizza was so good, we ended up ordering two extras to satisfy everyone.

And a special shout-out to Marisol, the all-day Sunday bartender who's fast and smart, friendly but not chatty.

Really good beer can be found here. You can do sampler flights too, which is nice, and I highly recommend it.

The food is pretty lack luster. I got a burrito which I can only describe as tasting like it was made by an old lady that never deviated from eating meat and potatoes their whole life and had no idea what a burrito should taste like. I can't recall what my wife ordered, but it wasn't anything more than just okay.

Talking to others, it seems that sticking with the more typical bar food is the way to go.

If they found a way to step up their food offerings, I could easily see giving this place 4-5 stars.

Pros: Good beer and also a decent selection of drinks on the cocktail menu.  I also really like their wings.  Happy hour is 4-7pm, with $10 beer pitchers. And tip: there is another women's bathroom on the second floor.

Cons: I've been here many times, and encountered very rude service about 2/3 of those times.  Also, there was a bug in my friend's drink once (they replaced it after we told them, but still...ech).

I go when I'm in the mood for lunch and a beer! The food is delicious, I am really fond of their pizzas (especially the bruschetta one)

Harvest Moon REALLY REALLY needs to speed up their service. There have been times where my friends and I have been like "I want to go to Harvest Moon" and we decided not to go because we didn't have enough time, and ended up going somewhere else instead. I have been here 5 times, and last time it took 50 minutes to get a sandwich when the restaurant was empty. Are you serious?? I always want to give this place another chance, but the service always lets me down.

Yummy food, great craft beer, painfully slow service.

They say timing is everything. Unfortunately, that worked against me during my visit to Harvest Moon Brewery. Of the eight advertised, locally made brews, only four of them were on tap, which obviously eliminated my plan for trying their sampler. Oh well, whatcha gonna do?

So, I decided to try the Harvest Hefeweizen followed by a Firehouse Red. Both were okay, but nothing to get too excited about. I was hoping for more variety and would like to come back and try some of their other selections, when they're available.

Very nice atmosphere! Great location with a home town appeal. Try the sampler to taste all their unique beers. My favorite is the raspberry flavored Berliner Weisse. The french onion soup and BBQ pulled pork sandwich is out of this world! The Weisse complements the BBQ pulled pork perfectly.
Very friendly service! Refilled our water multiple times without being asked.

    The beer is amazing.

The people here are literally all white people and wannabe hipster looking folks, which is disappointing. They're also older (30+) and working class. Occasionally they'll have a band playing, which is cool and all. The bartenders here are really nice and like to talk to everyone about nearly everything. Never had a problem with service or anything.

This bar was hyped up by several of my professors and friends so when I actually came here for the first time, I guess it didn't impress me at all. I didn't appreciate one night when they tried to charge me a cover fee when I could have gone to better bars on George street for free.

Tip: Wednesday nights have 10$ pitcher- great deal.

Overall, great beer but lacks a diverse crowd.

This place is a brewery.  I tried to order a  Blue Moon and the bartender laughed at me.  I laughed along too but secretly I died a little inside.  Thankfully the delicious beer made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Salmon was good but nothing to write home about.  Not sure why'd you write home about salmon anyway though.  Unless you live on a fish farm.

This place opened when I was a student at Rutgers back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth and the "craft beer" movement was just getting started. I am happy to see that they are still in business, "crafting" great beers!

We had a late lunch here yesterday. Enjoyed the fried calamari to start - large portion of non-greasy, corn-meal crusted calamari.

We next had the mushroom croquettes, which were oozy with gruyere cheese! Mmm! Fried fish tacos had a nice, thick batter on them and were topped with big chunks of avocado. We also had the sausage pizza which had a nice thin crust, enabling us to eat all of it without getting overly full.

We had 4 different beers and enjoyed all of them, particularly the "Dirty Sandy"!

We also enjoyed the pudding bites and bread pudding for dessert.

The service was a little slow but they get kudos for the innovative things they do with a deep fryer!

As a Rutgers student, I am constantly trying to find decent food options outside the standard dining hall experience. Harvest Moon is definitely one of my favorite go-to's.

The atmosphere is really relaxed and the food is very comforting. Some of my favorite dishes have been the nacho appetizer, bbq glazed calamari, harvest moon burger, and fish and chips. Beer wise, what their menu lacks in choice (this is a brewery after all), it more than makes up for in taste. I am particularly partial to the Belgian Winter Ale, which has a fantastic nutty flavor to it.

Another plus for Harvest Moon is that while the portions are quite large, the prices are not. They are extremely reasonable for the amount of food you are served, which is much appreciated by someone on a student budget like myself.

I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a place to hangout and experience some great food and beer.

Cool place, love it in the summer when they open up the doors in the front.  But the food is mediocre...wings were delish though and kind of gigantic.  I didn't like any of the beers - even after tasting all of them.  I am in no way, shape, or form a beer expert and when the bartender discovered this he kind of made me feel stupid...sorry I have other things to study besides beer lol.  Even started rolling his eyes when I guessed at what kind of beer it was.  He was kind of a jerk...I can't stand "beer snobs."  Whatever get a life.

But it can be fun for the bar scene...they will sometimes have a band in there (hopefully it won't be the loud screaming one they let play there on occasion) and a DJ every now and then.  Don't go there if you're actually trying to talk to someone though - you'll lose your voice by the end of the night screaming at your friends so they can hear you.  They also have a late night bar menu which is nice when you don't want to go for the so-so pizza on Easton Ave to satiate your drunk munchies.

We were passing through and are always looking doe "non-chain" options, so we stopped at Harvest Moon Brewery and Cafe.  We literally got off the Turnpike, then back on.

What a nice surprise!  The food was great. I ordered at turkey burger and it was served with fresh mozzarella and fresh roasted red peppers (not from a can).  Although I am not a fan of beer battered fries (and don't know why the entire world insists on serving them), the fries were pretty good. We started with a thin crust pizza--made to perfection. All in all, perfect experience and exactly what we wanted for a Sunday afternoon lunch.  Service was okay (other than the server constantly checking his blackberry in plain view). Decor was as expected.

I had a few beers here before a concert at the NJ State Theater.  The bartender was definitely overwhelmed.  I think he needed a second or third bartender to help him.  I tasted two different micro brews.  The Belgian Saison was too hoppy for me.  The Schwarzbier was OK, but not my favorite.  I stuck with whatever hard cider they had on tap.  I wish that they had a micro brew stout.  The Schwarzbier was close to a stout.

4 drinks came out to $20 bucks.  Not too bad at all.  I would try this place again.  I'm willing to bet that this place is packed during the semester with Rutgers kids.  That may be a plus or minus for some of you.

I went here at least once a week for several years in college, and stop by every now and then when I am in New Brunswick. Love it here.

Friendly staff, very knowledgeable about the beers they carry. On several occasions, I even got to chat with the brewmaster about what he was working on. Their summer, fall and winter brews are fantastic - they often have a Raspberry or Blueberry Wheat in the summertime, INCREDIBLE Pumpkin Spice brews in the fall, and warm lagers in the winter. They also have a great variety of staples, including their Moonlight Pale Ale and Jimmy D's Firehouse Red, which the brew in honor of a fallen New Brunswick firefighter. There is a solid wine list and a pretty impressive cast of bourbon and scotch selections. Prices are also excellent, average beer will run you about $4. You can also buy a growler to fill and bring beer home - when I did it, it was $20 for growler + fill, and I think $10/fill after that. Can't beat it!

The food here is great. The menu has something for everybody, but no so much that it's overwhelming. I've had a number of meals, and have never been dissatisfied. Some of my favorites are the Petite Tenderloin and the Brunswick Wings.

Seating can be a bit tough here - there is downstairs seating next to the bar, the upside is that the full glass windows/doors open during nice weather, but the downside is that it is EXTREMELY cramped. Upstairs offers more seating, but you can expect a wait on busy nights - especially if the Scarlet Knights are playing!

It loses one star because the after 10pm scene there is completely different from the awesome, laid-back dynamic the restaurant is known for. The after-10 scene is a lot like what you would expect at one of the campus bars - weird, sketchy people, super crowded and generally unpleasant.

But if you want to stop there for happy hour, lunch or dinner DEFINITELY DO. It's a really great New Brunswick place!

This is a solid bit of Americana tucked away on the bustling George Street. The first floor is an intimate bar setting with tvs. Few or no seats. Prepare to be cozy with your neighbor in this college town establishment.

We showed up as a party of 9 with no reservations and were led upstairs to a 25 seat dining room (no tv). The menu featured a list of tasty choices which included tenderloin, salmon with avocado, bacon burger, baby arugula salad to name a few. The server was a nice guy - though aloof, and forgot my dessert order.

The beer selection has been executed with commitment, wit and serious attention to detail. Being a simple beer drinker I asked for the closest thing to a Bud Light. They gave me the MoonLight Kolschbier, which was far beyond my expectations, a light beer flavored with hints of fruit. For any Wisconsin beer fans this reminded me of Leinenkugel's Summer Wheat brew. More importantly tasted good and quenched my thirst.

Harvest Moon is a solid 3.5, damn yelp rating system.

It felt kinda weird coming back here. Weird in a good way though as coming back here brought back a flood of memories. Harvest Moon hasn't changed at all since I moved away about 6 years ago. I spent plenty of time here when I was at Rutgers either drinking or seeing bands. There was no band when I was here as it was just a simple monday night. Doesn't change the fact that the seat I was in I had sat in way too many times in the past. That seat is possibly the exact seat that my butt had graced many a time and the space certainly was. Face the bar, then turn around with a beer to watch a band.

I can keep on reminiscing, but no one really cares about my rambling on that part. Harvest Moon hasn't changed all that much and for that reason I still love it. The brews are pretty good. I wouldn't say that they are amazing, but there are no clunkers at all. Very good consistency and a variety of styles too,

The service was very good as well. It wasn't too hard to get a beer or food when I needed. I thought the fries were on the smaller side for fries that are made in house. No biggie really, but it just is. I got myself a turkey wrap. There was a ton of meat along with a good bit of bacon too. That warmed my heart as bacon and I are very good friends.

It was a lot of fun revisiting here. All sorts of fond memories came flooding back. Harvest Moon attracts a good crowd too. You kind of have to go slightly out of your way to get here as the main College Ave scene is over on Easton Ave. That was always fine by me as I don't need to be jammed into a crappy bar that has a bunch of crap beer and bad music. Roll on and keep on being.
