This is my new favorite local restaurant. Â Its been a long time since a really good restaurant opened in Glen Head, Long Island. Â
The quality of each dish is outstanding. Â My favorite is the Duck always cooked to perfection. Â Also enjoy the Lobster Taco's as a small plate dish. Â There is a variety on the menu for everyone.
The wait staff, bartenders and hosts are friendly and offer great service. Â Melissa the bartender makes one of the best Cosmos!
An excellent replacement to the prior restaurant. Food was really excellent and prices were in line with quality and quantity.
Noise level is pretty substantial though so bring your outside voice.
Most of the reviews are right on so nothing new to add here. Did I mention it was really loud. :)
I've only gone once, and may be a while before I return.....but you've got to feel good after walking out of this place.
We are locals so of course when we came home by train from JFK after vacation and saw a new restaurant had opened, we were overjoyed! Couldn't wait to try it & we were not disappointed. I can't even tell you what kind of fish I had (white?) but it was like butter. The Cajun sauce on the side was excellent. We have since been here 3x and have not had a bad meal. It's tough to get seating so we go on weekdays, which is fine with us. The staff have been excellent, always asking about food allergies and checking ingredients (a huge plus for me!); during restaurant week my husband tried the wild boar ribs (I think that's what they were called). I had to try a bite of course-Best ribs ever! They should add them to the regular menu. Haven't tried the outdoor seating yet but hope to soon.
Review Source:I am a huge Kent fan...I have even worked with him in the past, but this was an embarrassment to his name and his reputation. Â
We sat down and received our ordered cocktails 10 minutes before our water. Â We ordered the fried mozzarella which was standard - nothing special. Â Then the veal short ribs, which came with barely had any sauce on it and extremely over cooked. Â Next we had the foie gras...Now I love foie gras and have had it all over the world - this was by far the worst. Â ever. Â It was served on top of very soggy bread drowned and i mean drowned in this thick red sauce. Â It was so bad we couldn't even finish it. Â
Half way through the dinner the kitchen door was propped open and someone proceeded to smoke a cigarette or cigar in the kitchen and poured into our table (which was in the back against the wall). Â
I give this two stars because I know Kent and his talent and if you can guarantee he is the one cooking, then it's totally worth going in - but if there's any chance someone else is in the kitchen then don't even bother.
Delicious, creative food from a menu with something for everyone....all at a great value.  Despite the very reasonable prices, the service was impeccable.  Never a moment where you even had to look for a waiter for something.....the staff was 5 seconds ahead of every need.  It's obvious everyone is very happy to work  there and proud of their restaurant and food.  The only thing that was less than perfect was the noise....it was very loud......but if diners knew how to use their indoor voices, that wouldn't be such a problem?
Review Source:Love it!!! The food is amazing, service the best and the hostess is the sweetest girl.. We go there during the week a lot and sometimes we don't have time to make a reservation but she always accommodates us with a smile on her face and makes us feel very comfortable! Very highly recommended !!!
Review Source:I came to Heirloom Tavern this past Saturday after having heard it was owned by the same people who own the Brass Rail (one of my fave restaurants), and after reading Joanne Starkey's glowing review in the NY Times. Â I did not realize, even after reading the review, that I had actually already BEEN to Heirloom Tavern, when it was Fork and Vine. Â I have no recollection of my meal at Fork and Vine, but my whole experience at Heirloom was memorable in a very good way:
On to my review of Heirloom, though, which is why you are here, non? Â My friend Jen and I made 8:30 reservations; we arrived about 8:15, and they told us they would be ready for us soon. Â That's fine; we got corner seats at the bar, and there we ran into some trouble, and the main reason Heirloom loses a star from me: Jen and I are comfortable, at the bar, two girls in their twenties, ready to order some drinks, the bartender comes over and hawks at us "I have to clean this up!" Â She proceeds, for the seven minutes we were at the bar, to never offer us a drink, but instead THREE TIMES come by to wipe up the not very dirty bar area in front of us, at all times in a hurry, then rushed away. Â Ooookay. Â She would have gotten a glass of wine out of each of us, plus tip, but cleaning the not-dirty bar took precedent. Â Consequently, I had one glass of wine at the table, but I would have had two, total, had Heirloom been properly about their business, and they lost, what, let's say, $15 off me and another off Jen with their sloppy bar tending? Â (Ironically sloppy, of course, since the bar tender was so busy cleaning - haha, I laughed). Â
We sat just a bit early for our res, at a very small, cramped, two seater. Â The entire restaurant is dark with white table cloths and brown butcher paper covering the cloths, and it is lovely, but the space is tiny, and seating could be uncomfortable. Â I was fine with the table, though, and so was Jen (it's not like there were any really "good" tables). Â Our waiter came by and (finally) took a drink order, whence we both ordered wine. Â The menu has tons of food on it: bar plates, small plates, salads, soups, entrees, etc., and so you need a few minutes to peruse it completely, but there is no rushing here at Heirloom: they let us take our time, almost to the point where, in between courses, they were taking a bit TOO long. Â I digress, though: we both ordered the lobster bisque (their soup special), Jen got their clams Casino, we shared the Mediterranean plate, I got the duck breast with sides of mashed potatoes (despite Joanne's not loving them in her review) and the sauteed mushrooms (which Joanne did love); Jen got the red snapper special, although I can't remember what sides she got just now. Â Let me just say, lobster bisque lovers, that you should hope to get to Heirloom on a lobster bisque special night; call ahead or something. Â This stuff should be on their regular menu: it is the best lobster bisque I have ever had. Â I tried one of Jen's clams; they were very good, she enjoyed them, they were well made. Â I was a little disappointed in the Mediterranean plate; it was, for $12, very nearly what they give you at George Martin the Original as their opener for free. Â It was good, and I enjoyed it because I always enjoy a Mediterranean platter, but I wouldn't get it again. Â On to the entrees: Jen loved hers, I can speak for mine, and say that, next to Kitchen A Bistro (whose duck no one will ever be able to touch), this is the best duck breast you're going to find, not just on Long Island, or in New York, nay! Â But the world. Â Unlike Joanne Starkey, I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes, but I wouldn't do the mushrooms again; they were eh in my book. Â
For dessert Jen ordered the beignets, I ordered the white chocolate cheese cake. Â Desserts, as the Times review will tell you, are all made in-house: they are worth saving room for. Â Jen loved the beignets, I ADORED my cheesecake, so definitely try their desserts.
Finally, and I promise to wrap this up soon, service is pretty good, but not quite "there" yet: I appreciate pacing, but they took just five minutes too long between courses to bring out the next course. Â The waiter stopped by a couple of times to ask if things had been brought to our table: shouldn't he know? Â It was a good thing he did stop by, though, because a couple of times things hadn't been brought yet. Â Overall, however, I liked Heirloom, and I'll be back!
