We had a wonderful dinner at Himalayan Restaurant last night. Â It was our second dinner visit, after visiting the lunch buffet once. Â We're new to Indian food, and have been trying the Indian restaurants in Lake County...looking for the best. Â Himalayan Restaurant is hands down the best we've found so far. Â Delicious food, pleasant dining room, good service, and easy parking. Â Terrific!
Review Source:Pretty standard lunch buffet. Â When I went, they had some interesting hard boiled egg curry, kickass cauliflower curry and other standard fare - goat curry, papadum, chicken tikka, chana masala, etc. Â If anyone is concerned - none of the dishes were spicy, and some were actually on the sweet side (to me at least...). Â The cauliflower and chana masala definitely hit the spot for me. Â They also had carrot pudding? and kheer for dessert. Â The kheer really watery, but flavor wise, yummy. Â Service was OK - they cleared our dishes and refilled water pretty fast. Â Definitely worth a try for a cheap lunch if you're in the area.
Review Source:One of the biggest drawing points for this increasingly popular Indian and Nepali restaurant is that it's the only one around. So even if the food was mediocre, it would have few if no competitors. I'm happy to report the food is quite good here. I've been a half dozen times and while more often than not I've enjoyed the value and variety of the lunch buffet, ordering food made to order off the menu offers far superior quality, as well as direction to have the spice levels adjusted to your taste. Before Himalayan, I'd never tried Nepalese food. There are just a few choices on the menu, but a standout would be the Momos, steamed dumplings with meat and or vegetables and a special sauce. The great value of a weekday lunch buffet for less than $11 is another huge draw here. It was almost full the last few visits. There are usually nice pakoras, a sambar soup (today served with a delicious spicy Nepalese fried lentil ball) and a simple make your own salad as starter options. Today there were no less than 6 side sauces to try with the food. If you are vegetarian, you will be very pleased, because the options are numerous, from Chana masala with chick peas to creamy eggplant cooked in a clay oven. The paneers are good, and while I prefer peas, the spinach had a nice flavor as well. Typically there will be 3-4 meat entrees. The rich chicken Mehta in a creamy fire engine red sauce is good as well as a surprisingly moist tandoori chicken. My favorite standard meat entree is a goat curry. It's tender and lightly spiced. For desserts they often have mango ice cream, but today there were four choices including the standard fried donut holes in a rose water sugar syrup and my favorite warm carrot pudding. My main concern about the food is that it's really on the bland side. Maybe they do this to match local tastes, although there were quite a few Indian people eating in the place. I know traditional Indian food is quite a bit more spicy, so one or two spicy entrees on the buffet couldn't hurt. Service is usually good, but lately I've noticed the dining room is understaffed which translates into having to wait a bit for things. While until now I've never had a serious gripe about the service other than it was slow, I felt like a ghost in the restaurant today. I was addressed exactly twice: please sit here and thank you upon taking my check. Maybe she was having a bad day, but she never asked me anything else or even looked me in the eye. That's too bad. I'd recommend this place to anyone who hasn't tried Indian or Nepali food. If you go for the buffet, it's completely unintimidating.
Review Source:Tonight was our first time here, and we loved it! All of the food we ordered was amazing and the service was too! They are so nice! We had someone in our party allergic to tomatoes who ordered a dish with tomatoes and didn't realize it. Not only did they make him something else, they didn't charge us for the one he ordered by mistake! Then they even offered us dessert on the house! The interior is also really clean and comfortable. Great for families and big parties. We can't wait to come back and try the buffet!
Review Source:I'll keep it short and sweet, atmosphere, very NICE (one of workers even turned on fireplace for us). Â I had the lamb kabob and my fiance had the PANEER TIKKA MASALA, and I wish I would have gotten that. Â DAMN that dish was DELICIOUS!!!!! Â I mean my dish was good but I wish I would have gotten the PANEER TIKKA MASALA! Â Waiter was helpful and courteous, the naan bread was fresh and delicious, even the chips with dip were good (not sure of the name of the chips and dips). Â Will definitely be returning for that PANEER TIKKA MASALA. Â Definitely worth the visit.
Review Source:Pretty good food, excellent service, and very clean. I only give it three stars because I like spicier Indian food. I had a good lunch, and if I am nearby and hankering for Indian food, I will go again. But, I wouldn't make a special trip. Now, if you are new to Indian food, and are nervous about it being too spicy, I can heartily recommend the Himalayan.
Review Source:Another successful Yelp story here. Â I would never had known this places existed if I didn't notice some reviews of several Yelper friends. Â
The ambiance is very simple, yet very clean and tidy. Â The wait staff was very prompt, even when the place was somewhat bustling. Â
I went during lunch time and opted for the buffet which came highly recommended and for good reason. Â If your a novice of Indian or know it well, this is a great place to come. Â
For the novice this is a great place to come and get yourself acquainted... especially during the lunch buffet. Â During the buffet they have the food labeled well, so although you may not be able to recognize it, you'll at least know what your eating. Â Don't be afraid, dig right in and more than likely, you'll like just about all of it. Â (the only exception is the desserts, and generally there is no middle ground... you either really like it, or hate it.) Â
For those of you who know your way around the Indian fare, I think you'll like this place as well. Â I lived in India for three years and found the buffet very satisfying, Â albeit Americanized. Â Meaning, if your expecting the tandoori to have some good kick, you'll not get it here. Â (I'm hoping this changes when ordering from the menu.) Â
The naan is good too and what I like here is they bring out a heap of it right from the start! Â
Defiantly coming back here! Â Thanks fellow Yelpers!
Food and service during afternoon buffet was excellent. Â The food was quite good and the items were well stocked. Â The number of items was definitetly a plus as I have been to similar buffets that only carry 6-8 entree type items, this buffet easily had 12+ entree type items available.
Review Source:Food: A+ ... when you're in the restaurant. I used to live & still work in downtown Chicago, so I'm used to getting Indian food delivered. Truthfully, it's my go-to when I'm working late or otherwise too busy.
These guys, Himalayan ... great food, reasonable prices (not sure what benchmark everyone else is used to), but their delivery is absurd.
First, no Tuesdays. At all. Sometimes other days are a no-go too.
Second, they only deliver when they're not busy. You can call, & ask, & they'll tell you they can if you really, Really, REALLY can't come pick it up, but they'd rather you do carry-out.
Lastly, they don't seem to know how to package food to go. Or (worse) they don't care about their delivery customers ... something, anyway. Freshly cooked food that needs to travel well can't just be slid out of a pan into a container. They seem to get it wrong every time.
I would love to make this a five star rating, but I just can't until they start to take all of their customers seriously.
Portions are large & tasty. Â The mango lassi is sooo good. Â I've had the Nepalese items several times and always liked them. Â I've taken a few other people there & everyone else has always liked their meal, too. Â They wrap takeout really well, too, so there's no spilling in the car.
Review Source:I have been here a few times now, always for the buffet. I'm too afraid to order a meal that I'm not sure of, so I always get the buffet so I can kinda pick and choose. The food is always great and I liked it a lot!
The inside decor was a little...off? And the bathrooms were awkward. Didn't really detract from the dining experience though.
I've had both takeout, which ended up being a veritable buffet at an Indian friend's parents' house, and the lunch buffet. Â The buffet is currently $10.95 and includes a soft drink. Â The service was unobtrusive but efficient and friendly, and unlike a lot of buffets they'll bring you baskets of fresh, hot naan. Â
The buffet has a decent variety of both meat and veggie options as well as a few desserts, which is helpful when dining with Mr. Vegetarian. Â I know I found enough to eat and my belly was as hard and tight as a watermelon after. Â Probably a bad sign. Â The other reviews regarding the spiciness of the food is true, and the takeout food definitely has more kick, but they do have hot sauce on the buffet and a quick spoonful of it mixed into my lunch solved that problem. Â
I'd been to this place when it was called Bombay City and heard some gossip about why it closed from the aforementioned friend's mom, but I'm going to stop being a busybody for once, and keep it to myself.
Note to people in a 5 mile radius: Â They deliver.
Alright so this is my first time ever trying Indian food. Kind of embarrassing that I made it to 23 being so close-minded but oh well it happened.
I went to the lunch buffet. I'm not entirely sure what it consisted of, but it was good. Â There was some fried rice.. a soup of some kind, fried lentils? chicken tika masala? Goodness this is like the most uninformed Yelp review ever. I guess the point is that I'm a noob and I'd never tried Indian food before and I dont like spicy food and I LIKED this place. So to all the noobs out there, don't be afraid to try it! It's yummy.
I was here for lunch buffet.. The place has nice ambience compared to other indian restaurants .. For 9.95 it was not bad.. Personally It could be priced a little lower on a weekday for lunch.. They had a big list of Indian beers and wine collection.. The owner looked like a Nepali and oddly a wine connessiuer .. Coz everytime he gets a break.. I used to see him on d bartender side ... The staff were friendly n apt.. This place has no competition for Indian food in the next 20 mile radius.. So you have no real choice.. If u around the area  n craving for Indian food n beer.. This is d place to be!
Review Source:this is the best indian food in a ten mile radius. the ambience is quite nice, tables are cleanly set and the decor has been recently updated. $9.99 will get you a delicious lunch buffet, except completely heatless. this is indian food that's been completely toned down for the suburban palate. i should be crying from the spices, but instead i'm overeating from the delicious but bland abundance.
this would be a nice place to take an adventerous client/customer for lunch.
Been to Himalayan a couple times for the 10.00 lunch buffet, everything is so fresh and not sitting around. They have a very good selection and several desert choices. Service is solid with freshly made Naan brought to your table, and water filled before the glass is half empty. I only wish the food was a bit more spicy, its all great don't get me wrong, but I love it when the heat is dialed up! that's the only reason they don't get 5 from me.
I suggest you don't go for a fast lunch because you'll want to take your time and savor all the wonderful dishes they offer. One last thing WEAR STRETCHY PANTS!
Don't write a hateful review of a place you have only been to once for the crumby lunch buffet. This place is good. We usually go with takeout because it's usually too busy to have a relaxing meal inside. The Naan here is perfect. The raita is nice. The vindaloo is nice and so is the biryani.
Dinner here is much better than the buffet.
My only complaint about this place is that my family can't have dinner here for less than $50, so we don't eat here nearly as often as we would like to.
Picked up food here (we live about a mile away) and it was superb. Â We got the Dinner Combo/Deal #1 with a lamb curry, some sort of paneer masala, and a kabob cooked chicken with sausage (forgive me I don't know what it's called but it tastes good). Â The food was excellent! Â I didn't have a favorite among the three dishes as it was all delicious.
If you are local and have a craving for some very good Indian food, then you should be all over this place. Â
If you've never tried Indian food, then just go for the dinner for two deal. Â You won't have to worry about what to order. Just eat what they give you and you will be happy.
Will I order from here as often as I can? YEP!
I was there on Christmas Eve day, which may account for the restaurant being pretty lightly attended. I got a tandoori chicken dish (I can't remember which!) which was great, along with a beer. My family lives up in Gurnee, so if I could get them to eat Indian food I would be back often...
Review Source:Went there for diinner and had 2 vegetarian dishes I haven't tried before - both very good - 1 had balls of something in a tomato colored sauce, the other a dish of sauce with lentil beans.
Also had Tadoori chicken - good, but I'd had better
The regular ad garlic naan were much better than average.
Overall a very good experience
I was very displeased with this place since they've come under new managment/ownership. Â The food was probably the worst Indian food I've had. Â It wasn't disgusting, just incredibly bland and boring without much variety. Â The steep price was what did it for me. Ten dollars for a lunch buffet that was incredibly sub-par.
It was rather greasy too. Â
They were friendly though, I'll give them that.
Been almost a month since I was here and its definitely made me like Indian food more and more. Â Although its a "Tibetan" restaurant most of the dishes tend to be of Indian origin and there are some interesting Tibetan appetizers here.
For the most part we stuck with Indian dishes such as lamb passanda, lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka, and chicken tikka masala. Â Had some chicken biryani and naan as sides. Â The raita that was provided was tangy and smooth, very nice.
My favorite dish was definitely the lamb passanda with its creamy almond curry sauce which did not overpower the slight but enjoyable gaminess of the lamb. Â The vindaloo was a bit tart from the tomatoes or vinegar but still enjoyable. Â Chicken tikka masala is represented well here but I would avoid the chicken tikka since it is breast meat and it was dry as well, the only saving grace was that the spices helped to make it taste good at least.
Naan is warm and taste fresh enough and the biryani is a good side to go with all of this. Â Overall service was quick and attentive although we were only one of five tables there that night. Â Prices are slightly high for the portioning but I am not complaining.
Really excellent Indian / Nepalese food in Gurnee of all places. Â They have an awesome lunch buffet during the day for $9.95 per person and an ala carte menu at night. Â We tried both during our stay in Lake County. Â
Food was definitely 5 star but the service was 3 during dinner service. Â We waited more than 45 minutes after ordering for our food to start arriving. Â It was worth the wait though.
I can't recall everything we had but standouts were the Lamb Vindaloo and I really loved the Carrot Pudding. Â Try this place if you want to escape the onslaught of chain restaraunts surrounding Great America.
I went last night with a vegetarian friend and we had a great experience. Â We split the Vegetarian Thali special ($26.95) and were overloaded with some delicious, reasonably healthy food. Â It included tandoori vegetables, paneer tikka, and dal (lentils), along with naan, rice, and rice pudding for dessert. Â Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers. Â The service was attentive without being intrusive, and they left us alone as we had a long chat after dinner. Â It is my friend's new favorite restaurant. Â
I have never had Himalayan food before, but to me it seemed very much like Indian food. Â I thought it was as good as my favorite places on Devon street in Chicago. Â
I don't get to Gurnee often, but would definitely return. Â The prices were very reasonable and the food was terrific. Â The night we were there it was pretty quiet, so I hope it picks up for them and they stay around.
As far as i know this is the only Indian joint around for many miles. I love this place so much! The food is awesome. I wanted to write a review mainly to tell everyone to eat there. I would hate to see this yummy place go out of business and have to drive 25-30 miles to the nearest Indian place only to find that there food doesn't even come close to the Himalayan
Review Source:Nepal lies at the crossroads of a lot of cultures; this is certainly reflected in the dishes offered here.
Himalayan takes the spice of India and combines it with other regional dishes. Â This place offers momo ("moe-moe"), a Tibetan variation on potstickers or goyza; a meat-filled steamed dumpling.
On the lunch buffet, there was one of my favorite dishes, Farsi Bhaji. Green beans cooked with coconut milk and cream. Â I love this stuff. Â The coconut milk is a dead giveaway that its a south Indian dish. Saag paneer, that Indian solution to what to do with spinach -- never better.
The samosa and thin, crispy spring rolls had an Indian flair. Â I like naan... we also had roti -- the less airy, stretchy whole-wheat breads that are more the home-style everyday bread. Â Heck, we make 'em at home!
The chai here is different -- Nepalese style. Â Spiced and black, without the dairy and sugar that Indian masala chai does. Â It's a really pleasant change and really brings out the spice in the food.
Service was good, and I will certainly be back.
There was an Indian restaurant that used to be in this location that I really liked. I was sad when it closed but then, Himalayan took its place: Hazzah!
Great lunch buffet with some wonderful Indian classics. Â I was happy to see my favorite green bean and coconut dish on the buffet the afternoon I was there--it'd been so long since I had it. Â The chicken was succulent. Â The samosas, a dream. Â The spring rolls were flavored with Indian spices. Â The saag paneer was so wonderfully comforting. Â They gave us roti when I asked for it instead of naan--no problem! (I love when a restaurant makes such requests effortless!)
Now, here's the cool thing. Â They have specialties known in Tibetan cooking! Â I was really cool to see things like momos on the menu and I can't wait to go back and try them.
We ordered masala chai but they gave us Himalayan chai which I'd never had. Â There's no milk in it and the spices are a little more complex than its Indian cousin and it was wonderful. It's easy to make a black tea drink like that bitter but the spices were PERFECTLY balanced. The waiter kept filling our cups too--that is the sort of service I can't get enough of.
I love this place, its delicious food and wonderful service. Â Give them a try. Â The Indian buffet is only 8.95 which is fantastic considering most places now have raised their buffets to 11.95 or higher. Â
Great value. Â Great service. Â Great experience!!!!! Â OM....
Enjoyed the lunch buffet ($8.95). Â WE were the first in for the day, but many others soon followed. Â A few of the items included: green salad, tandoori chicken, basmati rice, creamed spinach, khasi ko masu, chana masala...few other items
Feel the buffet could add a few more items to select from, another desert selection would have been nice.  The food was very good, but the service needs a bit of work - we had do ask for soda refill, and another serving of naan.  But, would  try again.
