I really should not be writing a review.
Came here once, for 5 people we got 2 large bottles of OB, 3 large flasks of soju (strawberry, yogurt, and lemonade), sweet potato chips, cheesy corn, and a large plate of seafood with ddeokbokki.
All I remember is an insane game of 7-11-doubles and having soju spilled on me so my clothes smelled like strawberries.
So yeah..... this makes a terrible review. Â
But it was a fun night! Â Hence the 3-star nod of approval.
I am sooooo disappointed!!! I really wanted to like this place, because it's so much closer to BART than Dan Sung Sa and I was excited about another Korean bar besides Dan Sung Sa. Alas, Holy Moly (Korean restaurant name: Wak Ja Ji Kkeol) totally let me down.
We walked in at about 6:30 to have dinner/drinks and were happy to see their happy hour special. We got $2 kirin beer! Â There is 1 star!
We ordered Deok Boki. Yes. it's supposed to be spicy but this was ridiculously spicy. My tongue and throat were burning! It was so spicy that it shot my taste buds so I really couldn't taste anything! :( I resorted to washing my food in a cup of water to swallow it down. My friend agreed that it was way too spicy and it was just spicy without being delicious. We are Korean, we know the difference between just plain spicy v. spicy and flavorful. This thing had no flavor besides hot chili pepper flakes. When I told the server that it was too spicy and asked her if she could give me some soup or rice to soften the heat, she/her manager didn't offer us anything. That's a sign of a bad business sense. If I were a owner/manager, I would have offered something -- maybe a bowl of edamame, extra helping of the free egg dishes, to accommodate
a suffering customer.
We also ordered chicken gizzard, which was also spicy! But more importantly, it was dry... it almost tasted like it had freezer burn. I've had plenty of gizzards in my lifetime and while it's supposed to be chewy, it's not supposed to be impossible to chew. Good thing they gave us sesame oil. I doused it in the oil to swallow it down.
The only acceptable food item we ordered was fried chicken. I give them points of the super crispy fried chicken.
If the service had been better, I might have considered coming back here just for drinks and fried chicken. But I am taking my business elsewhere. I could have gotten much better food and get the same drinks at one of many Korean restaurants in the neighborhood. What a let down... I guess Dan Sung Sa is still the only acceptable drinking place for me for now.
I've been here so many times and this is my friend's new favorite place to go for drinks.
Their chicken wings are yummmmmmayyy. Love the radish on the side.
The reason I'm not giving Holy Moly a 5 is because of their limited menu. I look through it and never find anything that I would like to eat that isn't overpriced and isn't chicken wings.
I do like their shaved ice though! It's hard to find a place that sells quick shaved ice on the side. I have also tried the soft tofu soup. It was a bit bland for me and really watery. I prefer Porno's tofu soup. However, Holy Moly had great side dishes that came with the Tofu Soup. Now, the ramen was pretty normal but satisfying. It's also one of the cheapest item on the menu.
Their soju cocktails are a good deal and happy hour specials are even better with $1 warm sakes.
