My friends and I got there just in time before the Saturday lunch crunch. Â We split the pear blue cheese salad and the turkey avocado sandwich. Â The salad dressing was delicious and all the components that went in the salad were thoughtfully chosen. Â It could have been a hard as rock pear, waxy rubbery porsciutto and institutional blue cheese. Â I also hate a salad that's ice cold. Â The pear was just right, hazelnut toasted well, blue cheese was flavorful and the porsciutto was luscious. Â I used just a touch of dressing.
I eat turkey on whole grain bread all the time and I accept that it can be a little dry. Â This sandwich wasn't dry at all. Â The avocado makes the entire sandwich really moist and helps to blend the flavors of the turkey, cheese and bread.
We also ordered the bread pudding which was just a little dryer than I like my pudding. Â I like it where there are little pockets of custard. Â This is the kind that is well brown on top and all the custard are soaked up by the bread. Â IMHO this could have used a sauce or ice cream.
We had a lovely lunch until the crowd came in and they were literally on top of you waiting for you to finish your meal.
I've been a regular here for over two years and I must say that this really is the place to go in beacon. Â My favorite dishes are the Vietnamese Pork Sandwich, their egg sandwich baked in a roll with chives and bacon, and their bread pudding, chocolate caramel or ginger peach. Â the owner and staff are very friendly and down to earth. This place has a very eclectic feel to it. Â Reminds me of Greenwich village in the city.
Review Source:My all time favorite here is the Middle Eastern Platter. They also have great salads, sandwiches, and baked goods. On weekends, they do breakfast, and that's incredible as well. I love the atmosphere, and all staff are friendly. In the summer, the outdoor space is beautiful and tranquil (garden/little fountain in the back). Can't go wrong here, seriously!
Review Source:The food was really good here and I would definitely come back. The biggest con is the way the seating is set up. Â We were asked to order at the counter and then were given a table marker ( fake grapes) and just look out for a table as it is first come first serve. Â So we ended up awkwardly eyeing tables and trying to gauge who was leaving so we could pounce (it made it even more awkward that we were holding our coffee mugs while hovering). Â The food made up for it-my salad was really good. Â I ordered a soup but they realized they were out of the soup after I paid. Â The staff offered a refund on the soup and a free dessert to make up for it!
Review Source:We stopped at this place before going to the Dia Beacon museum. We spent part of the day at Storm King cycling and were quite hungry for lunch. Â It was quite busy, and there was a mix-up with our orders (its order at counter and sit, they will bring the food to you). Â We waited extraordinarily long until asking where our food was, and it got lost in the shuffle. Â The proprietor acknowledged the error immediately and offered to treat us to dessert The Mediterranean salad & goat cheese salad were delicious - well worth the wait. For dessert, we got a macaroon, which was moist and delicious without being too sweet, along with a delicious big piece of carrot cake, which I finished the next day for my birthday treat. This carrot cake made my birthday even more special, it was excellent without being too sweet and too
rich. The coffee is decent and rose wine they serve is very nice. Â The place itself has
a lot of charm with a nice outside seating arrangement option.
(representing 2.5 stars)
Walking in, we have a vibey, pleasant, dippy little hipster refuge reminiscent of the kind of place you might find down a backstreet in Greenwich. On the surface, Homespun Foods is doing a lot of things right - a focus on fresh, local ingredients, loads of vegetarian options, a chilled, sociable atmosphere (ie, there's a communal table), cute decor and speedy service. This is all unfortunately hamstrung by their horribly disproportionate prices.
I'm usually pretty forgiving when a place puts effort in, but we had a turkey sandwich (cold cuts of turkey and provolone straight out of the fridge, with a completely heat-free "chipotle mayo" on room temperature brioche) and a mediterranean platter (under-garlicked hummus, under-salted baba ganoush, decent couscous salad, a lonesome stuffed grape leaf, a tiny block of feta and about four olives, served with a fairly generous pile of pitta slices). This was all *fine* - it was fresh-tasting and it did the job, but this isn't cooking. It's arranging refrigerated items on a plate - and it represented absolutely nothing Joe Average couldn't assemble in his own kitchen - it all arrived in about four minutes - add on a can of orange San Pellegrino and a bottle of cherry soda and you have a $30 lunch. Sure, lots of places like this overcharge horribly for soft drinks - but Homespun really are pushing it. The fact that it's a pay-and-then-wait system makes this even more of an insult, because we were instantly expecting something special. Oh yeah, and they "encourage" you to bus your own tables after you've eaten. Seriously?!
Oh well. If you're a bit of a hippie, you have a little too much money, no interest whatsoever in cooking for yourself and you profess to enjoy "fresh food", and want somewhere to sit and putz on your Macbook for a little while, go here.
Mediterranean platter - ~$12
Turkey sandwich - ~$7.50
Two soft drinks - ~$4 each
Total: $29 and change. Yeesh.
Traffic on I-84 forced us to stop for lunch in Beacon. Â Thankfully, in the same neighborhood as the usual diners was Homespun Foods. Â
Homespun was a sensational find, and dramatically better than the usual "travel food" options. Â The salad Nicoise was amazing...very fresh and very French. Â The PB & J sandwich was excellent too. And the carrot cake was insanely rich and delicious. And eating outside in a beautiful back garden was a major bonus. If we lived nearby we'd be regulars.
Always pleasant to eat here especially when we can eat outdoors in their sweet garden. The food is always fresh and they often run out of specials.  I am not a dessert person but almost always order the spicy chocolate cookie. I have had surly, rude wait people  and long waits, especially for take out. The owner is always pleasant and really knows food.
Review Source:After a long but wonderful time at DIA-Beacon, complete with a disappointing stop at the museum cafe, we were in need of some truly tasty and hearty nourishment  and we were so lucky to find Homespun Food.  The ingredients were very fresh and we just couldn't stop commenting on how delicious every dish was. We had the antipasti platter, two huge yummy salads, and a soup. Everything was a good size and prepared in a unique, healthy, and surprisingly tasty way.  We just wished a second location could open in Brooklyn!!! Highly recommend! Can't wait to come back.
Review Source:Gluten freedom.
They actually asked me if I am celiac. They made my food away from the other sandwiches.
I got to choose between FOUR desserts and NONE of them was a flourless chocolate cake. You wouldn't think one would get sick of flourless chocolate cake, but YEAH. I had an enormous brownie dripping with flavor.
Homespun was a HUGE treat for me. An experience that will beckon me down the Northway to Beaconland again and again, I'm quite certain. THANK YOU for making me feel spoiled!
I find this place slightly overpriced - but that never bothers me much. Â However, the second time I went here for lunch I watched the woman making food behind the counter sneeze into her hand, use said hand to pick a piece of bread out and place it into another customers to-go order. Â I'm sorry but that is unacceptable and I'll never return.
Review Source:Last weekend we spend about 36 hours in Beacon. Well, we ended up eating here twice in that time period...because it was so good. The service was great...we were even told we could hang out after closing time while they cleaned up - becasue we were waiting for our train back to the city. The food was really fresh and high quality and there was a great outdoor garden out back. I would highly recommend this restaurant!
Review Source:Wowzers!!!!!!!
What an oasis! Should have guessed by now that Beacon is a place for slowing the pace and taking time out to enjoy the finer things in life; but this place just takes the cake for quaint, friendly service; carefully concocted mouth-watering menu items catering to ALL palettes.
Incredible selection of cheeses and sweets shine above all. Home-made jams, crackers, macaroons, fruit tarts, fresh fruits and vegetables. Wow! Wow! Wow!
I ordered the Nicoise salad for lunch and it did not disappoint. Everything on my plate was calling my name each ingredient holding its own on my perfect plate! Perfect amount of tuna, green beans, perfectly boiled egg, fresh light lettuce leaves, flavorful moist olives. All in all a 5 star dish! Coffee was ok.
French flare, comfy yet stylish decor, old wooden chairs reupholstered with fashionable oilcloth featuring nature paintings. 50s ceramic (Fiestaware) pitchers adorned the tables holding silverwear. Order at the counter, server brings your food, you bus your own table when you are done.
5 star amazing!
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Reasonable prices. A wide menu full of seasonal food. Quality ingredients and fresh produce. A huge back patio with ample seating and a nice garden. Superb desserts (read: fattening as $h!T).
I'm a pretty tough critic, but I can't find anything to complain about. Maybe they should have more attentive wait staff, but I kind of liked the serve yourself aspects. An all around top notch cafe. I just wish it was closer.
What a wonderful place to just chill in the back garden.  I was there with my wife and 3 kids, and lucky for them that it was during a quit time and it wasn't overpacked.  Should it have been a bit more populated, we would  probably not have ordered.  Homespun offers quality, and this is why I post on YELP.  I feel that it is not a place to bring a family of 5, but for a quiet meet with a work associate or a BFF (so cheesy) WTF (OMG WTF am I text typing for), any ways I have a bad case of A.D.D. what was I saying.  Oh ya...Homespun is a good place that seem to have their $h!T together.
Review Source:Having recently moved to Beacon (and done my Yelp research) I was excited to try Homespun Foods. Everything about it sounded so good. I stopped by on a Sunday around 2:30 and ordered 2 sandwiches to go. I proceed to wait 40 MINUTES for them to finally be ready. Had I known beforehand that it was going to be that long I would have gone to Poppy's for a truly delicious (and organic, grass-fed, and locally-sourced) burger. But the owner, who was running the register, didn't tell me about the wait until after I had paid and moved aside for the next poor sucker - I mean customer. Also, she said "it'll be a few minutes," which I thought would be 10, 15 max. I could see 2 or 3 tables occupied in the garden and 2 in the restaurant, which didn't seem that crowded to me. But the kitchen/prep area was a frenzy of 6 or 7 employees bumping into each other and shouting. Pretty chaotic.
The sandwiches ended up being just okay. We had the fresh mozzarella with tapenade, which was extremely sweet - a little to sweet for me. The other sandwich was the soppressata, salami & provolone, which was tasty but almost overloaded with meat. A little went a long way.
The cheese counter seemed to have a nice little selection, but not nearly as varied as I'd hoped. And I was disappointed to not see any Captain Lawrence, a Hudson Valley microbrew favorite, included in the beer selections.
For similar quality of food and far superior selection (and service, judging from the other reviews) I'll happily spend my money at Beacon Falls Cafe. Hands down.
A gem on Main Street, Beacon! The perfect brunch or lunch addition to a Mount Beacon hike or DIA:Beacon visit. The backyard patio is perfect for relaxing on a warm day. The Mediterranean platter is fresh and fun. The quiche was also excellent. Definitely take the time to browse their collection of hard-to-find take-home foods too, like chocolate-covered figs and specialty sodas, and I even spotted some Zingerman's products which I've never seen outside Ann Arbor Michigan.
Review Source:Stopped here after our little road trip to DIA:BEACON. Â I must say, we enjoyed our meal out in the lovely back garden on Memorial Day. Â
We had two dishes, the pulled pork quesadilla that was on the specials board and the bacon, jalapeño, tomato quiche. Both were delicious. The rest of the menu on the wall looked extremely appetizing as well with lots of salads and sandwiches.
For you city folk who wander on to Main Street in search of something to eat after an excursion to the area, homespun will get it done.
where do i even begin? i've never eaten something i didn't LOVE from homespun. i literally frequent this place 3-4 days a week. i stalk their facebook just to read the specials and dream about the banh mi sandwich. i always get the daily soup and i (and my friends) have even gotten second soups/sandwiches to take home because i couldn't get enough at lunch....everything is fresh, organic, local or all of the above. they have a beautiful patio and offer coffees & pastries and the best chocolate espresso cookie in the world.
seriously the best place ever...
(they also sell dolmas and those are......get them, just go get them)
I LOVE this place! Â I rarely get up to Beacon, but when I do this is always where I want to eat. Â It smells delicious, and everything tastes just the way I want it to. Â Very casual - order at the counter, then they bring your food and you bus your own dishes. Â It can be crowded with no place to sit, so try going a little early or late for breakfast or lunch. Â And always, ALWAYS get dessert!
Review Source:For delicious, home made food in a warm atmosphere, this is it!
I had a breakfast burrito and bought some Spicy Chocolate cookies for later. Everything was delicious.
The atmosphere is easy-going, with ample seating and a communal table.
Only one thing--I felt the coffee was a bit too light for me. I prefer a darker roast.
For Beacon this place is great... Â breakfast burrito without the tortilla was my favorite (unfortunately they only had this on the weekend), nice backyard area, free wi-fi, quiche a plenty, and a decent pass at humus. Â Awesome habanero sauce which I had with almost everything to add some kick.
The great part about this place is they are doing what we are obsessed about on the west coast - they are using local food that is well raised with care. Â I was surprised to not find a lot of places like this in NY overall, but Homespun was definitely representin the local farm to plate movement, so they get extra props for that.
If this was outside of Beacon I would give it one less store, but things are relative, so 4 for them.
This place is great...we go here once a week at times (other times maybe once a month). Â The breakfast burritos (only avail on wkends til noon) are amazing. I get ham instead of chorizo in them (among many other delicious things), because I feel like chorizo is a little much for the morning, but that's just me. Â They always have at least 1 or 2 types of quiche, and usually a few specials. Â My wife is a vegetarian, and everything either one of us has ever eaten has been delicious.
The coffee is better than solid and the desserts are also homemade and absolutely killer. Try the spicy chocolate cookies. Â
As far as what I've read below, I don't understand how someone that's only eaten one thing there (like a veggie burger) can review a restaurant on yelp...doesn't make sense...or how someone that's had a bad counter experience with an 8 dollar an hr employee can destroy the place. Â Ask the manager/owner, at least, before you do something like that. Â Some of the reviews on here are absolutely baffling.
Tip: Try to get a table in the backyard/patio area if it's open...especially during the height of northeast garden time...really sweet
We stopped into Homespun after a long day at a nearby convention for their "summer menu" - just the dessert though. We'd read the reviews and thought it would be a good thing - we were right!
Get a seat in the outdoor area in the back if you can -- whimsical and lovely. We had the peach basil shortcake and fell in LOVE. We also had the chocolate hazelnut torte, which was perfect - just felt not as summery and delicious as the shortcake.
I would have given this place 5 stars except they'd run out of the dessert I wanted to try (the hot & spicy ice cream sandwich) - - at 7 pm... I thought that was a little early. Otherwise a great place to go to relax and enjoy something delicious.
I like Homespun. It's one of the things I don't choose, but appreciate when it's chosen for me.
I have to say that I LOVE veggie burgers in all shapes and sizes. Homespun's did not disappoint me. I haven't ordered anything else here, but I don't need to. The bites of others' foods I've had have been good too.
The back patio is always fantastic for a relaxing sit-down lunch with a nice cold beer. Inside feels very crowded, but I'll take that patio any day.
I would give Homespun more stars except that it feels a bit overpriced. But I like what they're trying to do here. It really deserves 3 and a half. or maybe three and a quarter. This is the problem with Yelp - it's like doing fifty-five in a fifty-four.
Very impressed...
Every meal has been a delight....Veg. meatloaf, gorgeous breakfast burrito with spicy-hot chorizo, seasame noodles, non-hormone "happy pig" soprasetta panini...YUM! And BIG YAY for the local/organic/grass-fed etc. standard!
Then there's those desserts..OMG...phenomenal! Â Very hard to choose a fav....guess I'll just have to keep going back & trying them all!
Well, we recently stopped in for a little change of scenery (not that there is anything the matter with the other scenery) but to spread the love. Being that I am off the wheat for a bit, I asked if their vegetarian meatloaf had wheat in it.The counter person said "Yes, there is rice in it so there must be wheat." Say QUOI? Boy was she adamant that rice=wheat.
Not feeling to confident about what else might be in there, we left. At a place like Homespun, the staff should know down to the morsel what is in each offering.
I realize I am particular about what I eat but to equate two totally different food products with no relation whatsoever was just not good. Suppose I had a serious allergy and the food sold to me was misrepresented? Not a good thing.
And the last time we were in there, we witnessed one of the employees take her bare hands to a vat of salad fixings after wiping her sweaty face. We could forgive that, it happens. But it seems that the problem is just a total lack of professionalism and knowledge of products sold.
Oh well. There are just too many other places to go around there. We had liked them so very much and had put them on The List but no mas.
Homespun is cute but clueless.
We wanted to find a Restaurant that served some good healthy food. This is exactly what we found! Â The help was friendly and attentive, the ambience nice. We sat in the back at the community table which was a fun diversion. The only really annoying thing was the constant sound of dishes being piled into the bus buckets that sit in shelves near the tables. But... I guess that means the place is busy which can only mean one other thing.... fresh, healthy mostly organic food at a good price. Worth the visit and Beacon is a cool place as well.
Review Source:Maybe it was the brickfaced walls. Or maybe it was the fun but kitschy decor. Perhaps it was the giant blackboard of options on the wall... More than likely it was the reviews on yelp that had me looking forward to my trip to Homespun Foods in Beacon. But after walking in, and liking the vibe, it all kind of went downhill.
Nice:
Ambiance, Decor, Salads, Quick service, Clean tables,
Some staff + owner/proprieter who were friendly
The cheese
Not-so-Nice:
Dead spider in my drinking glass (at first i thought it was a prank ice-cube - how droll! - um, apparently not.)
Over 3 bucks for 1/4 of a cup of cappuccino
Some Staff who were in la-la land
Higher than ave prices for nothing truly special other than the cheeses.
I think I've been spoiled by the many cute cafes I've been to in recent times. But from pesto pasta, tomato soups, and nutty salads, I wasn't totally impressed with the options and the higher than average prices for said options. The staff was inundated with a busy cafe, (the behind-the-counter girl was busy chatting and running around in what seemed to be circles though other waitstaff WAS helpful and attentive)....And try we did, to find the aforementioned delectable pastries, but the giant bboard had no mention of them, and neither did any visible signs near the counter. Instead we'd ordered cappuccinos and at $3 something each, we were surprised to find our cups only a quarter full - definitely not enough beans in that cup to shoo away any caffeine cravings we had. (We hit up the Muddy Cup down the street to get a decent sized cup o' cap for less than/equal to Homespuns price). But we did want to try and like 'em. No chance to this time.
If there is a next time, (which after said spider incident, not very likely), I'll give the sandwiches a try. The cheese is what made my salad very good - perhaps they'll alter the very ordinary sandwich choices into something spectacular. Something that will make me want to come back to spend more.
Bummer though, because I did want to like the place.
Dropped in for lunch when we drove by...REALLY cute place. I love the decor and the ambiance. It truly does feel "homespun"
I have to say that the counter service is a bit spotty (she 'forgot' to put in our order after telling us that she would bring us our food to the table outside), but they made up for it by comping dessert, and the desserts are magnificent! (Evidenced by the fact that the pastry workspace took up almost half their kitchen -- you can see if for yourself when you walk by to the bathroom.)
I would definitely come back to eat here. Food was fresh and delicious!
What a delight! After a morning of scratching your head at the DIA museum wondering  'what the hell is that?' head over to Homespun Foods for a fun ride for your taste buds. Friendly staff and incredible homemade good for you foods that are made with fresh ingredients.
This is a nice little cafe with cozy seating (large groups will not be able to sit at the same table). There are many creative items on the menu from soups, salads, quiches, and sandwiches made with a combination of ingredients that are truly different and wonderfully edible. They make their own bread and it is yummy!. Save room for dessert like a croissant stuffed with chocolate or various tarts--oh yeah! Â They need to move to CT!! Â I must say that this place is reminiscent of The Spicy Green Bean Deli in Wethersfield, CT, but more artsy. Wonderful!!
I live in this city, and I don't know why I don't come here more often. I tried the wheatberry, tomato and corn salad, and it was really tasty. M. ate a spoonful and his sleepy eyes lit up.
I took home the Indian green pea soup. It wasn't that good. The salad made up for it though.
During the winter, the cafe and catering business is open every day 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the warmer months, it's open longer Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Although I'm a meat-eater, Homespun Foods is very vegetarian-friendly. Next time, I'd like to try the Fresh Mozzarella sandwich with tapenade, eggplant pepper spread and roasted red peppers.
This is my favorite place to eat ever, in the entire world.
I have been coming to Homespun Foods for two years and I have always been filled and happy. Â Their soups are as homemade as could be. Â I've had the spicy sweet potato, the potato leek, and the mushroom. Â I could eat the mushroom soup every single day. Â For a while, I was hooked on the fruit and cheese platter, and the selection of cheeses was different every time. Â The quiche is extremely rich, as is the veggie meatloaf. Â On the healthier side, there are the salads, which are to die for. Â My pick is the squash salad with pumpkin seeds.
As if all this isn't enough, they have take-home goodies. Â All the cookies are good and I can never leave without getting a few to go. Â They sell cheeses, olive oil tortas, and Rick's Picks Pickles.
The decor is vintage with a beautiful garden in the back. Â The menu is on a large chalkboard and you order at the counter and then they serve you at a table (which they keep track of with a papier-mache piece of fruit). Â Their commitment to fresh, local, and organic food is proof that it is more delicious than the processed crap we're used to.
The best weekend ever is all about going to the Farmer's Market, stopping by Homespun Foods for lunch, and getting bread and cookies to go. Â If you are in Beacon, this is a must. Â What are you waiting for?
Organic food, well prepared and fresh as hell. My girlfriend took me here, seeing as she generally eats better than I, and I have been looking to eat a little bit healthier lately...scary I know. As we both observed this brick building reminded us of alot of different places in Albany which is a good thing seeing it's where we met and spent a good amount of time exploring together.
I had the Italian salad which they offer with Salami but I decided to steer clear of that this time around. This huge salad has gigande beans, Parmesan, marinated mushrooms, assorted greens and balsamic dressing. Pretty simple but incredibly fresh almost sweet, and incredibly satisfying.
All in all  a great place to meet for a bite to eat and an awesome cup of tea or coffee. It is a bit pricey, the salads around 7 bucks, but its more than enough to fill you up and its crisp and delicious.
Beacon has some good eats to offer, this place is no exception.
Would have given it five stars but I haven't tried enough of the menu yet.
**UPDATE**
Have tried various other dishes and have found all of them to be incredibly flavorful and fresh. Their salads present strong flavors without overpowering any single element of the dish itself. Their deserts are mind-numbingly awesome.
During the summer months their back patio opens up which feels miles away from Main Street and has fountains and a flower garden.
Check this place out, you will not be disappointed.
And just to be clear...they do serve meat which is hormone free, so this is not a strictly vegetarian place, although they can have a ball here!
