I stopped here on Sunday at 430pm, because of the great reviews posted. First I would agree that the potstickers are delicious. I had the beef chop suey and was not impressed at all. Â My date had beef curry and I was told that it was very good.
The service was not so great, I don't know if I just went on one of their really busy days but we were the only ones in the dining room and it took awhile to actually get our meal. People who walked in got their orders faster than we did. Â I did hear the phone ringing a lot and also noticed a lot of pick up orders come in as well so maybe they are more concerned with their walk ins, delivery and pick up orders more than the dine in patrons. I had to find someone for more hot sauce because we ran out on our table. I had to ask for water because we ran out and were never asked if we needed a refill on our beverages when they were empty.
I believe four star reviews have to have the whole picture and not just great food. I myself have had better beef chop suey. This is DEFINITELY not a five star.
I would only go here if I call in a pick up order but I probably will not dine in again besides there are an abundanceof chinese restaurants here in Chicago to choose from, I need more attention then what i received here. Â I only gave three stars because the staff was very nice.
Pot Stickers!!!!
This is Chinatown quality food in your own hood. Â Even though they're far from my house they still deliver to me in Jefferson Park. Â There is nothing in the area that is even as close to good Chineese as this. Â Mongolian Beef is top notch and the Pot stickers, mmm... Â If there is 4 or more of you get two orders because these little crack dough balls are amazing.
Best Chinese food in the area. If ever I crave Chinese, I order from hong huah. Shrimp fried rice consists of good sized shrimp. Mongolian beef is delicious and served on a bed of fried noodles. Orders are big and plenty, so you get a lot for your money. I recommend getting appetizers because they are my absolute favorite thing to order from here. Eggrolls, potstickers and crab ragoon are some great appetizers to just name a few. Almond cookies and fortune cookies with every order. And not mentioning very friendly, family owners, who been owning the owning for many years. Ambiance is very tacky with mirror walls, but I like that you can get a glimpse of what goes on in the kitchen when looking from a certain angle. Lastly, it's very reasonably priced, it's worth a try, if one has a taste for chinese and in the belmont craigin neighborhood.
Review Source:Only been there once, and I'm never going back. Yes its relatively cheap and they serve you and obscene amount of food in the lunch specials, but jesus, the food is bad, I went there with my friend and we both ended up throwing away like 3/4 of it.
You can find better Chinese food at an old country buffet, seriously, stay away.
Hmm, I've been passing by this place for about a year and a half and meaning to stop in and today I finally got around to trying it. Â Below is how I break down my experience:
Flavor - 3.5 stars  I'd say it's a little better than most Chinese places, but nothing that I'm going to get excited about.
Service - 4 stars  The man who waited on me was friendly and I've got no complaints on this item.
Cleanliness - 4 stars  What can I say clean is good.
Bang for your buck - 5 stars  For $9 I got enough good food to last 2 or 3 meals so I certainly can't complain.
Although 3 out of 4 of my ratings are a 4 or 5 for me flavor is by far the biggest factor in rating a place so since that is only a 3.5 star rating I'll give this nice little place an overall 4 star rating. Â I'm sure at some point I'll go back and try some other dishes here and if my opinion changes substantially then I'll post an updated review.
Love, love, love Hong Huah. Â I live close by, so this is the only place I order from. Â They already know my name, address and probably credit card number. Â Sometimes, I get freebies with my order :D Â I've also brought friends to the restaurant for dinner and have never been disappointed. Â The food is great! Totally recommend.
Review Source:Here's a small place that has a friendly atmosphere. I strongly recommend their delicious and hearty Egg Drop Soup. They serve it with plenty of eggs in a chicken broth and a few vegetables. If you go with one or two friends, you will definitely get more than your money's worth. You better all have an appetite to take advantage of their various Chinese appetizers and assorted meals. We tend to order the combination fried rice platter and/or the beef or chicken with peapods platter. Remember, you get more than your money's worth if you go with one or two friends (shhh).
Review Source:This is a big secret that everybody knows. Great food at super low prices. I have been here countless times after was introduced to it by colleagues in 1995! It has been my son's favorite growing up and have held many important meetings here. The food is excellent and I will put it against any Asian cuisine in US and I have been in China! 90% of the times I get the Mongolian Beef and I cannot find it this way anywhere else. The staff is super friendly and sweet and non-intrusive. The space is small and the decor a little bit 'tired' plus they added a TV screen which in fact does not do the place justice. The lunch cannot be beaten for the price, the quantity and the items that are just enough for great satisfaction; tea, cookie, roll, dish and fortune cookie! Enjoy.
Review Source:Ok, so I went back this week after two years to see if my taste buds were back to normal. I had the Fried noodles and chicken with pot stickers. The food seems to taste a lot better now and I was delighted by the experience of reintroducing Hung Huah to my Chinese restaurant line-up. The restaurant has improved with it's menu items. I'll be back.
Review Source:Use to really like this place a couple of years ago, ordered from them yesterday and the food was only decent. Maybe it was an off day for them. Also, they were a bit stingy with the portions on the lunch specials. I remember them being a bit more generous before. None the less, for $5 I guess you can expect it. Definitely will stick to Jess Cafe.
Review Source:Desperately seeking a new calendar, I called around looking for the Chinese restaurant that had what I was looking for. Â What luck, in business with Hong Huah, free calendar, no minimum order.
The hours are great, open til 10, 11 on the weekends, and they deliver.
I ordered some egg rolls, shrimp toast, and crab rangoons, and they were greasy deliciousness and didn't break the bank. Â The service was very friendly, although the decor was a little dated, a little reminiscent of my great aunt's living room if she had been Asian.
I will be back Hong Huah, and probably even before I need another calendar!
Ok, so I've been to Hong Huah two times in two weeks now. I'm really feeling this place. It's super clean inside, the staff is super friendly, the prices are super cheap and the food is super tasty. I ordered the Sesame Chicken and it was delish! The Eggrolls are quite tasty too! But what really does it for me is the size of the Chicken Fried Rice! One order is enough for 3 people.....easily!
I won't give it 5 stars yet because I'd like to taste more on the menu. I tried the Mongolian Beef and it wasn't what I was used to (see: Joy Yee Noodle) but it wasn't bad.
Decent chinese food- cheap, delicious- the hot and sour soup in particular is wonderful.
Be wary though, ordered chicken stir-fried noodles here and a wayward shrimp came in mine- normally not a big deal, except for the part where I have a potentially fatal shellfish allergy and made a special note in my order through grubhub that they should be particularly careful not to get any shrimp in with my food.
Alas, I will have to find myself a new chinese place. But for those of you without unfortunate allergies to delicious food, this is a good choice for decent chinese.
Love this place, it's hard to find a great chinese spot to actually understand the people along with great food. Around this area their isn't too many great spots to eat where there aren't many thugs, this is a great spot to relax, eat, drink & know that you are safe to be in. (Even when cops aren't there); Food is great, and if there is one particular plate that you don't feel is cooked correctly all you have to do is speak up. The owners are great, friendly and does it really matter if the change goes to the man's pocket, he is the owner, he is the one who deals with the irs, so are the people commenting on this site rating the food, quality or are they the irs, if you are part with the irs then honey you MUST BE STUPID LIVING IN THIS HOOD!
Review Source:To my coworkers and I, this place is affectionately known as "Green Awning", because most of these people seem to have difficulty in pronouncing the real name. Â A lot of my Mexican comrads refer to this place as "Green Onion".
The food here is excellent. Â It is not the best, by far, but for a business lunch outing, you simply cannot go wrong. Â For about six dollars (yes, six dollars), you can order a lunch special (my favorites are sweet and sour chicken, chicken w/ vegetables, sesame chicken, and Mongolian beef) which comes with a bowl of soup (egg drop or hot and sour), egg roll, fortune cookie, and cookies. Â Hot tea is complimentary as well, and they give you a big kettle of it. Â
The hot and sour soup deserves it's own paragraph. Â This stuff is delicious. Â It can be ordered to go, and they certainly don't skimp on the sheer amount they give you. Â This soup can sure any ailment, and tastes just as good if you are already healthy.
The owner is the nicest guy on the planet. Â He personally greets all his customers, and will shake your hand and ask how you have been if you are a regular. Â He prefers to use his pocket as a cash register, which I think is pretty comical. Â Contrary to many people's opinions, I think the mirror walls are pretty cool.
How dare you speak ill of Hong Huah. You are probably just a frothing slut. Hong Huah is the only place to eat Chinese food around these parts. The place is always packed full of cops (good sign), the owner John is the nicest man on this here planet earth, and the food is beyond amazing. I'm actually going to order food right now just to be spiteful of anyone who denounces this gem in the city. Kiss my ass world, I'm going to eat me some FUCKING CHINESE FOOD. Also, They do serve booze here, don't be fooled. AND the mirrors are awesome because it allows me to stare at my fully cultivated beauty. So, eat here or you will be robbed in front of the place.
Review Source:I have been eating at Hong Huah's since 2001. Absolutely the best Chinese food around. The mirror decor can be a bit unsettling, but the food has never been disappointing. Personal faves: shrimp fried rice, beef and broccoli, orange chicken, soups (all of them!).
Empty on a weekend? Don't fret--if you sit in for dinner you will find out they have a huge delivery clientele.
This place was part of my search for a local Chinese spot, and it was crossed off the list before the meal was even served.
I didn't know what sort of place this was, so I opted for take out, and am glad I did. I felt dirty as soon as I walked in the door, it was empty on a Friday evening spoke volumes, Â and when I paid for my food the owner(?) gave me my change from the wad of cash/coin purse from his pocket and pocketed what I gave him.
In the 7 minutes it took me to get home, the paper bag that was containing my food had started to grease through and ended up tearing/falling apart by the time I got inside. They hadn't closed the box holding the egg rolls and the grease from the box had leaked out allover. The Crab Rangoon was hard as a rock, as if it had been sitting under hot lamps since lunchtime the day before. The Mongolian Beef (which was recommended by another Yelper) was medium rare at best. The Kung Bao Chicken was peanuts and hot peppers in a gray sauce, there was no chicken in it. The Sweet and Sour Chicken wasn't cooked the whole way through as the batter from the chicken had merged to a big pile at the bottom of the container. The Salt Pepper Shrimp was overcooked with nothing but salt, the Mixed Vegetables were raw and shoved into a take-out box, and they didn't give us any rice.
Don't even bother with this place, you might as well throw your money into the trash.
I have been going here forever! Â My mom always worked near by so we would go for lunch all of the time. Â The lunch specials are less than $5 and include soup (the hot and sour cures anything, I dream about it), egg roll, fried rice, entree, cookies, and tea. Â If you are out that way definitely get there, if not... it's worth the trip.
Atmosphere is funny... don't expect anything special.. kinda sleeztastic if you ask me.
Stuff to try: Â Hot and Sour soup, Mongolian Beef (ask for it spicy if you are into that), Kung Pao Chicken, Chicken Wings, Egg Rolls, Sweet and Sour Chicken.
