Good food, good prices, and the owners are amazing.

The delivery was fast, the prices weren't bad but the food wasn't that good.

Actually, the crab rangoon was delicious! I'm so picky about it and was impressed with it. We also ordered the egg drop soup (it was okay), the orange chicken (mediocre), chicken fried rice (okay, very salty), egg roll (not very good) and mongolian beef (SWIMMING in wayyyyy too many onions. WHERE'S THE BEEF???).

I live in Portage Park and am that restaurant about once every two weeks.  It isn't fancy at all.  The food is great.  I order orange chicken (easy sauce), egg foo yung (easy sauce).  The crab ragoon is excellent.  They make their own hot mustard.  The service is great and the food is always hot.  You can't go wrong for the amount of food at the price.  Do not judge a book by its cover.

So my quick tip said "I'll let you know" and now I will. I went here because of all of the very good reviews and I have to say it was just okay. The food was relatively bland and uneventful. I guess for a quick bite it would be fine if you stuck to something like fried rice but other than that . . . The good news is that the portions were huge and the prices inexpensive and the woman who waited on us was very friendly. However, being a bit spoiled on places like Ben Pao puts me in a bad spot as that is/was the best Chinese food in the world.

This is a lovely little Chinese restaurant. I dined in today with my boyfriend and we were both completely satisfied with our experience. We spent only $20 and have leftovers for days. The food took 10 minutes to arrive at our table after ordering and the portions were very large (see photo I uploaded).  The only thing that wasn't a completely 5 star experience was the sesame chicken sauce. It was a little bland.

    Simple dining experience. 5 stars.

I'm only reviewing the take out service.

We've been hunting for a local chinese joint since moving to Old Irving last year.  We tried a few places and sometimes just went to the old hood.

But the review for Hong Kong House were promising.  We ordered the eggrolls, chicken fried rice and sweet and sour chicken.

The service was fast (15 minutes!) and the food was really good.  The chicken was from tender moist piece of chicken breast.  Very good quality.  I'm not a huge fried rice guy - but I would highly recommend you get at least one order of this from them..

Also - they respected our request for no MSG - always a plus.

From the look of it, I wouldn't recommend eating there - it's very greasy spoon in there.  I saw a sign for parking in back, but given the cross streets, I literally have no idea how I would get to it..

    Super fast and tasty food.
The service is friendly and appreciative.  Food is great, albeit salty, and the fried rice and singapore noodles a bit oily. However both are excellent! The combo fried rice has generous chunks of pork, chicken, beef, and shrimps or whatever, yum. Singapore noodles and seasame chicken are staples i always order at chinese food places, and Hong Kong's are great.
I have had their smoothies also, only thing that would make them better is if they had the tapioca balls.
Have dined in and picked up. Cant comment on the delivery yet.  If you like this place, Jess Cafe a bit farther West is also worth checking out.

I ate here a few times when I first moved to the area and have since found better places. The egg drop soup was good but the entrees we got were just typical and not very fresh. Nothing stood out except the soup and if I go to a chinese place it wouldn't be for egg drop soup. Unless maybe I was sick, make sure they put the green onions in there. If you want good crab rangoons go to Leung's on Irving, way better. And my mom said this place was "gross" when we ordered delivery.

Hong Kong House is a real pleasure. I have ordered and dined in on numerous occasions and it is safe to say that the staff, who are always polite and competent, will provide you with a good meal.

Favorite dishes on mine start our with the pot stickers. These jumbo dumplings of delight are more than a meal on their own if you ask for two orders. Their crab rangoons are some of the best I've had. The only downside is that they don't offer the super sweet orange syrup with them.

The fried rice at HKH is especially tasty. You can believe it's good when their Plain fried rice is better than most Chinese kitchens meat loaded offerings.

On the downside they have a couple dishes (Orange Beef, Fried Duck) that are a little too fatty or over-fried. Therefore I recommend finding what you do like and sticking with it.

Oh, and it would be nice if they threw in some fortune cookies on deliveries.

This is the only Chinese food I will order as long as I live anywhere around it. I'm sure everybody has their own Chinese food horror story but this place is great. I usually get the Beef and broccoli and egg roles and both are delicious. The egg roles are nice and hearty. They even have vegetable egg roles (NOT just spring rolls called vegetable egg rolls) for those that like them. They deliver super fast and are very friendly. I don't order from anywhere else.

Continues to impress as a reliable neighborhood Amero-Chinese joint.

I've never been here so I can't speak to the hole-in-the-wall ambiance of the place, but I can say that the food is quite good, plentiful and well priced.  We ordered from this place the week we moved in here, and were impressed, but over the last year we've tried a lot of the other Chinese restaurants which deliver to our neighborhood and so haven't had the chance to really explore the menu as much as we would have liked.  But tonight I had a taste for Chinese and we went back to the original favorite, and were not disappointed.

The crab  rangoon is excellent, very crisp and tasty with a generous amount of fish mixed into the cream cheese.  (Be sure to remind them to send hot mustard sauce if you like it because they don't always pack any.)  Egg foo young from HKH doesn't disappoint either.   But for me, the star of tonight's meal was the almond pressed duck.  I haven't eaten pressed duck in ages and this was everything I'd hoped for.  It was moist, tender and flavorful, served on a bed of chopped veggies.  I'm more used to a bed of shredded lettuce and tend to prefer it that way, but this was just fine.

Delivery was fast and everything was exactly as ordered.  I have no complaints.  It's not the best Chinese ever but it's darn good and they'll bring it to us.  There's no bad there.

HKH is a great little dingy spot for carry out or delivery. There obviously are so many better Chinese food places to dine which provide the commotion and hustle one would expect at a Chinese restaurant. HKH is the antithesis of that experience. It is slow and empty and makes you wonder whether you should check out another place as soon as you walk in. The owners are often sitting in the dining room and talking or watching tv while prepping vegetables for their dishes. I still don't understand how they turn a profit, of the dozens of times I have carried out from HKH this place has never had customers.
Getting the food is another story. After ordering (we have tried pretty much the entire menu), you can hear the wok getting going and food being prepared fresh (a good thing about a slow/quiet restaurant). The food is ready incredibly fast and the prices are dirt cheap. If you spend over a certain amount they toss in chicken wings as well.
Quantities are plentiful but go for the extra dish so they you can get the free chicken wings. They are better than most fried chicken joints that specialize in it. My fav 3 are the mushoo pork with a side of plum sauce (solid dish, definitely has been a mainstay in our tifecta orders), mapo tofu (classic taste with a generous portion of tofu), and any chicken dish (we like the sesame or the general). Add on the 6 fried chickens and you have a feast.
Great little discovery in my hood. Awesome speed in delivery service as well. If lethargic and wanting to veg by the tv. Order in from HKH and eat like a king in your underwear. No one will judge you.

This place was a total surprise for me. Its one of those "dont' judge a book by its cover" type of places. It looks old and dingy but their food is sooo good. My fav is their fried calamari...oh its so delicious, and their crab rangoon is the shiet! So far everything I've tried from this place is good, the portions are generous and the price is not bad either. Overall a great neighborhood spot to get some chinese food. Check it out for yourself!

The food here is delicious and very quick to get served.  The establishment is not the best, but not the worst in the world either.  The fried rice and sweet and sour chicken are some of the best I've ever eaten.

My favorite Chinese food in the world can be found in this hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Portage Park. The pot stickers are incredible, the vegetable lo mein always hits the spot and the sesame chicken is divine.

Excellent crab rangoons!  The food was traditional Chinese take-out, fresh, hot and delivered fast.

As far as hole-in-the-wall Chinese places go, this is one of the best.  Delivery, take-out, or sit down, this place always pleases.

My current favorite treat is the Singapore Style Noodles.  Pork and shrimp with thin noodles.  They happily turn up the heat for me too.

Order $10 or more and ask for the free egg roll.  They have other specials for bigger orders, but I usually ring in right around $11-12 for a huge soup and a huge dinner so the egg roll is perfect for me.

Speaking of soup, both their Won Ton and their Hot and Sour are great.

If you're in doubt, ask.  They're very helpful in suggesting new things.  That's how I learned about the Singapore Noodles.

I was really surprised that we liked this place. We've lived in PP for about a year and never really reconciled ourselves to chop suey instead of Thai food. However, we tried this hole in the wall and found it to be very good! The chicken broccoli was better than I have had from the local competitors, the crab rangoons were good, and the egg roll was fine.

All in all, this place seems to be some of the better Chinese in PP. We still miss good Thai though . . .

So, I'm a BIG fan of crab rangoons.  My favorite place to get them is this little hole-in-the-wall called Darien Chop Suey in Darien, IL.  Darien is quite far away from where I live, though, and I've found all of the chinese food restaurants in my immediate neighborhood (such as Wong's and Leung's) to be sorely lacking.

That is, until I found Hong Kong House.

I live literally two blocks away from it, and I drive past it ALL THE TIME.  A friend of mine said it was a dump, so I never bothered to go in.  I have a hard time experimenting with chinese food because it tends to be sort of pricey, and there's a big margin for error, so if I don't like it I'm kind of screwed.  Nevertheless, I was feeling bold one day, and called up.  Not only do they deliver, but they accept credit cards as well.  +2 for HKH.  Not 20 minutes later my food was delivered by a courteous older gentleman, and 5 minutes after that I was in the middle of a food-gasm.  The beef chop suey and crab rangoons were BETTER than Darien Chop Suey!  I have since been DELIGHTED that there's such a great food find so close to my house, and have been demanding that friends and family eat there as well.  I want them to do well, so that they never leave, but I am sure most chinese food afficionados would like it, too!  Especially those of you who like Wong's - you don't know what you're missing.  Enjoy!

An update, on 1-27-09: Darien Chop Suey changed owners and now their food tastes like cardboard, so forget everything I said about them.  Hong Kong is now officially the best Chinese food in the city, in my humble opinion!
