I've been here twice now, the first time inspired by a Groupon, the second for a lunch meeting.
Perhaps I'm not the best customer for trendy quasi-neuvo-etc American restaurants. I AM a vegetarian, and only have two options for an entree was a little annoying, especially when the server kept having to go back to the kitchen to check on whether things were actually vegetarian...because he kept forgetting to ask. Maybe if I had told him I was deathly allergic to meat I would have been in better shape.
The food was good, but not outstanding. The service was slower than molasses. The iced tea was tasty...I suppose that is something.
All in all, it's an ok place, but for the hassel of parking and the prices, I'd go elsewhere.
I love the Hornet. There are of course things I don't love, like how they seem to always increase their prices and decrease their portions, but I can overlook that b/c the food is normally good. I say normally b/c sometimes it's not good for the same item I got the time before. Not sure how that works out. I do appreciate though they reduced what's on their menu so they can really focus in and make those things better than just making a whole lot of things at meh level.
Price a bit high, but not unheard of amounts, services is normally around fair. Like where you're not happy about it but you're also not ready to flip a table in rage either.
This review is for the brunch only. Â
My man and I wanted to have a good, chill brunch last Sunday. Â We have only lived here for 5 months and wanted to try the Hornet since it does have more of a city vibe than most other places in Denver. Â Wait was not so bad, 25 min at noon. Â The actual space has lots of windows and tables everywhere, bar is a little small. Â Prime rib scramble was a little greasy but eggs and biscuit perfect. Â My man's chicken with gravy was nicely seasoned and not too greasy. Â Bloody Mary mix was thin but spicy enough
Lets just begin the experience...
While we waited we went to get a drink at the bar ($2 bloody marys!) and that's when things went downhill for me. Â I don't like to reach over people while they are eating so we went by the server station (but not IN the station since I was a bartender in DC for 7 years and that's just not good manners) Â and a man got up and said "would you like my seat" SCORE! Â There was another seat for my man so we started to sit down, then two people came over and gave us that 'what are you doing, we are going to look at you surprised but annoyed you took those seats' gaze. Â Since we weren't in a hurry I asked if they would like them and they got all passive-agressive Denver style 'oh, no, that waitress just told us there were 2 seats at the bar'. Â Whatever, take them, we just want a drink. Â The bartender was speedy and poured our drinks (in the service bar space I might add) yes, morning cocktails! Â But once again, interruption of my happiness...there was quite a large server that stepped right in front us as he was returning my change. Â Look girlfriend, I know whats up and you are being rude on purpose because you feel because you work there you can act like a spoiled 12 year old. Â Get over yourself.
Once we sat down the table next to us was a LOUD know-it-all with bad sunglasses telling her friends to get a tattoo at Kat Von D's studio for 15 min. Â Seriously? Â Morning ruined.
Kudos to our server who was not a wanna be pretentious snot and was around just enough to do her job and fill drinks when needed, which may have saved this place from getting 2 stars. Â She rocked.
All and all, the restaurant was good but too much of a scene for me on a Sunday morning. Â I just wanted some good eggs and coffee sans the attitude. Â ITS SUNDAY FOR %*@#$ SAKE!
The Hornet is another one of the spots in this neighborhood that I find myself wandering into on a regular basis. Â It's a fun spot, very brightly lit and very spacious (with the exception that the bar area tends to be a little cramped). Â They have good drinks and appetizers, I like the tap choices, and service is always friendly if sometimes a bit on the slow side. Â They have been pretty slammed almost every time I've been here, so I'm torn between understanding and feeling that if this is status quo than they should be able to handle rushes better.
The food is good, but I'm not crazy about the prices. Â Everything I've had has been tasty but not especially flashy, and I feel like everything is about $2 more than anywhere else. Â I call it an "Ambiance Tax".
That being said, I do enjoy coming here with friends, I usually find myself here during the UMS. Â It's one of those places that just has that upbeat feel that makes it difficult not to smile.
Recently was here after a nearby private event on an early Saturday night. Nice 2 for 1 drink specials, shared the appetizer 'The Mediterranean' (hummus, a tiny amount of feta, and veggies) between three not very hungry people and we all agreed that it was a nice choice. It get's crazy busy and loud in here but we still had a good time.
Review Source:I have been stopping by the Hornet on and off for years. Â Every memory is of a good time. Â Never amazing, but always fun.
This review will be for one fun Saturday evening with friends. Â We had just attended a private event in the neighborhood. Three of us wanted a couple drinks and a little snack about 6:00 pm. Â We walked in and were seated immediately. Â Our server was fast and accurate. Â Our Greek appetizer was tasty and the beer was cold. Â It was a great place to hang out, talk, laugh and have a good time. Â Like always, if I'm in the neighborhood, I'll stop by.
I happened upon The Hornet looking for a place to celebrate my birthday. Well this year it also happened to be an NFL playoff day and the Broncos were in it. I called SEVERAL places who flat out refused to take a reservation for 10 people at 6pm. I called The Hornet and made a reservation and was very excited that they even would as I had already had to change plans about 4 times.
There was some kind of confusion and I got a message later that day from Amy (I'm assuming she's a manager) saying she apologized but they were completely booked for that night. I called back and explained that the person taking the reservation did not indicate that she had to check the books or anything so I thought we were all set. When I told Amy this, she responded that if that's what I was told she would make it happen. I was actually a little shocked. Before even walking in the door the got an "A+" for their customer service. She could've easily said "Nope. I'm sorry but we're full" but she backed the word of her employee.
When we got to our reservation, we had a perfect table back by the pool tables and smoking patio. Our server was very quick and attentive. The food was great and we all were impressed by the menu selection. The place was packed but the service, all in all, was very fast. We all had a great time and they gained 10 new customers.
We had some friends in town this weekend and decided to take them to The Hornet. It again was on at Saturday and the place was packed. We only had to wait about 20 minutes for a table for four. We got drinks at the bar while we waited. The bartender was very attentive and we got drinks very quickly. The hostess came to us and said it would be a few more minutes for a table or we could sit right away at the long bar table in the middle. That was fine by us because we were starving.
Our server, again, was quick and attentive and we ordered some apps. The bacon brie fries are to die for and were cooked perfectly. Our friends got calamari and loved it. I got the cayenne honey fried chicken which was amazing. Our friend said the Philly Style French Dip was the best she'd ever had. My boyfriend and our other friend both got the steak wrap, both having special orders. Everything came out exactly how they ordered it.
This has quickly become one of my favorite spots in Denver. I will definitely be coming back and really want to try their brunch. I've also heard the blood mary bar is pretty sweet.
This place is declining and that's a shame.
When I dine here now it it "hit or miss" on the food and service. I recently had burnt sliders, soggy calamari, awesome pierogies, still awesome fish tacos and awful service!
The last time I went for happy hour here our server was incredibly unfriendly and stern. I am a friendly and outgoing person and like to make people smile or laugh when they seem a little down. I tried to turn on a little charm and she didn't even crack a half smile. She seemed frustrated when we asked what their happy hour specials were that night (they have different specials each night of the week and the sign was too far away to read) and we felt like if we didn't just pick something immediately, she might throw a salt shaker at us. Not a fun experience at all. Isn't happy hour supposed to be "happy"? She never let up the entire visit and we were so uncomfortable with her attitude we ended up leaving eventually.
When we were ready to leave, we paid separately. Since I had the appetizers on my check, my friends were covering the tip unbeknownst to our server. My check was paid first and I told her no change. When she returned to the table she literally tossed my check on the table open-faced showing $1 and some change from my tab. Clearly she was trying to embarrass me in front of my friends. We all just looked at each other not believing what she just did. Very unprofessional. Maybe she served tables in France prior? lol  I can tell you that I used to work in the service industry and if I treated guests with service like that, I wouldn't have expected a tip at all. If I was paying the tip, she would have gotten only 10% just because I have never not left a tip.
It is unlikely I will return here anytime soon and when my coworkers suggest this place for lunch or happy hour, I will most certainly insist we find a new regular spot.
Holy lord.....my belly is still happy from my dinner here last night!
So I've been in Denver for over a year now but have never ventured onto Broadway to check out any of the establishments there. After checking out another restaurant with a wait that was too long, we walked over to The Hornet and game was on. Naturally with it being Friday night there was a wait and while they told us about 30 minutes since we had a party of six, it was a little larger but they were really cool and open about letting us know where we were on the list. All kinds of people were in this place--hipsters, older folk, yuppies and an odd number of tall people which left me looking up the entire time. This place was packed though--barely any room at the bar or in general to just stand around so we parked ourselves in the front right by the hostess stand and waited. They had some pretty sweet drink specials so took advantage of that while waiting and it lessened the blow of our stomachs growling.
We finally sat down  and this place is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside which surprised me. Everything on their newly revamped menu looked amazing. I love that their selection isn't too big but instead offer a few appetizers, entrees and a whole lotta wraps, sandwiches and burgers. We started with the fried artichokes and while I've never heard of such thing, paired up with the spicy dipping sauce it was served with, it was mouthgasm worthy. We got our food shortly after and I was in hog heaven--I got the Parisian burger.
Again, holy lord.
The burger was on the smaller side which I dig because I wanted a burger but didn't want a beef baby sitting in my stomach but it was piled high with crispy prosciutto, brie, tomato, lettuce and onion along with piping hot fries. It was heaven.....the only thing I didn't like was that my meal had to end. Guess I'll just have to go back again and try some other stuff!
Fan-flippin-tastic. This is what I moved to Denver for. Fun bar/restaurant with enough personality to keep things interesting. Great happy hour menu- $2 for a Guinness battered fish taco? Yes please. Pork taco was okay according to my better half. We also shared pirogues with bacon, mushroom, garlic, butter and asiago. Yum yum. Beers were $3 and our tab was $20 for a filling and delicious dinner. The place has a clean feeling and the charm of being on Broadway amidst a cool vibe of vintage shops and bars/restaurants. Go and see what you can get for a 10 spot.
Review Source:I sometimes pop in for a "take-home" bite after work. I have been going to this place for years and my only real complaint is the service. No one ever seems very happy to see me walk in the door. I don't believe this is indicative of me personally, as none of them know me, I just think that service is not necessarily this places strong suite.
However, tonight the bartender, who took my to-go order, was very polite and helpful and seemed like he genuinely wanted to make sure I was happy when I left. It worked. I was happy with my food and with my service. I like to give credit where credit is due. I wish I would have caught the gentleman's name who helped me, as I would include it in this review (he was wearing glasses).
This place has solid food and always has. I enjoy the food I get there every time I eat there. It's better than your average bar food, plus if you eat there and get a window seat, it's great people watching. They also have vegetarian items on their menu (good ones), as well as a good selection of beer and liquor.
I live in the neighborhood and I will continue to support this place. If you are in the Baker neighborhood and bored with the overpriced "hipster" attitudes and food, I suggest the Hornet.
** I would have probably given them 3 1/2 stars too, but it's nice to get good service, so the extra 1/2 star is for tonight's experience. **
Definitely a fan! Had lunch here with a co-worker and really enjoyed it. The Hornet reminds me of my favorite hipster diner at home - it's tasty, reasonably priced, full of diverse characters and skinny jeans.
I had the California Turkey burger which was topped with avocados, bacon and blue cheese. The patty itself was ok but with the toppings it was great - I liked this better than my burger at the Cherry Cricket. And the homemade Au Gratin potatoes - oh hell yes!
My one nitpick is an over reliance on "southwest seasoning" as it was sprinkled on or used in everything I ate. Kind of too much of a good thing....
Also - I can report that Santa Claus eats here, so you know the Hornet is legit. He was two tables over having a burger with Mrs. Claus.
I have to agree with others that if I could rate The Hornet a 3.5 I would. The food is solid (I would definitely recommend the Honey Stung Fried Chicken and the sweet potato fries are in my top 5 in town), it has a great neighborhood bar feel, the service is average or above and the happy hour specials are great! I'm not sure why I don't have it in me to rate The Hornet higher; I think my reasoning for the 3 is that there isn't really a "wow" factor(on food, atmosphere, etc) to bump it up.
Tip: Park in one of the 2 lots (You can park in the Science Supply lot) in the evening behind the (between Broadway and Lincoln on 1st) if you can't find meter parking.
I have to say I am honestly shocked this place has such good reviews. I know it use to be good for brunch (years ago?), but that is now NOT the case at all. The food was the worst food I have ever had. I left hungry because it was not edible and that is not an exaggeration. Both my fiance and I's food was over cooked to the point of not being edible. Seriously disappointing. The only thing good was the vodka they poured over ice and gave me so I could make my own bloody mary from the bloody mary bar. There are tons of other good places to have brunch, my advice is steer clear.
Disclaimer: I am not a yelp review writer regular, I don't feel the need to go out of my way, BUT this food was SO bad I felt I had to warn people.
The Hornet is my favorite neighborhood joint. The food is always consistent and the service is always done with a smile.
I've been going to the Hornet for years and I'm just now reviewing it. The staff are all very friendly and cool. Its been a lot of familiar faces which means the company must treat the staff very well, so kudos to MGMT.
Love the Pierogies!
Always been a big fan of The Hornet. Back when I used to drink, it used to be oneof my favourite spots. Now, I'm just a fan for the food.
Pretty much always have had decent service there.
I've had tons of different things here, but the one thing I almost always get are the sausage rolls as an appetizer. On the hobo scale of one to five, I would gladly stab four hobos to eat these.
Fan, and will keep going back when I'm in the area.
I have gone to the hornet for OVER two years and I dont know whats with the baker area lately but I am becoming not a fan....
asked happy hour wines.... then asked if they had pinot grigio... she said YES... long story short when the check came it WASN'T(two $8 glasses and not great wine either)... Â She said I didnt ask if the pinot was specifically...really?? I have bartended 15 years and that is a rookie mistake... always assume the guest is CHEAP AND wants the HH drinks...
That wasnt the worst part besides the SLOW service and the fact that the bartender snatched THE CHECK OUT OF MY HAND WHEN i QUESTIONED THE PRICE?!?!? The explained she would just pay for it herself.... Â seriously I was floored and my friend encouraged me not to even tip
(BTW I left 30% bc she TREAFULLY explained she was having a really bad day... excuses excuses)
I think I'm going to agree with Amanda T. on this one. I'm probably leaning more towards a 3.5 or 4 but I need to allow at least one more visit to confirm my star ranking so for right now we're at a solid 3/3.5.
A bunch of us Yelpers got together for HH at another establishment and were not blown away by the menu and were getting hungry. Â Carly B. recommended The Hornet and we were all in. Â Table for five please. Â
It took us a while to review the menu which is a nice variety of small appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, salads, and some entrees. Â Something for everyone I'd say, although I'm not a vegetarian, I think they should offer one or two more items for the vegetarian, they seem to be creative so I'm sure they could come up with something or make up a good special of the day. Â With that said, I opted for the Special Salad of the day with avocado, corn, black beans, tortilla strips and a spicy tomato vinaigrette. Â The salad was plentiful and the amount of warm and perfectly flavored chicken I received was astonishing. Â The spicy tomato vinaigrette was my favorite, it added a ton of flavor to the dish and I licked it up. Â The rest of the table seemed very pleased with the dishes they chose. Â
Since our waiter dared to bring the dessert menu and honestly that's the only push we needed to opt for the pumpkin brownie tower with cream cheese filling - we dove in head first. Â One was enough for all of us to split, and it was delicious and we polished off the entire plate. Â
Service was great, he was there just enough and even when we gave him 5 credit cards he was more than happy to split the bill for us no questions asked, always appreciated. Â
One more visit and I'm sure they'll sell me on a 4 star review. Â Food is better than average for a bar/pub, some unique spins on classic dishes.
I don't know how you wouldn't love this place. Â The food is delicious-- I'm pretty picky, but have made my way around this menu a fair amount and have yet to be disappointed. Â The menu has enough variety that they're able to put together some great options regardless of whether one is looking for a lighter choice like a salad, or going all in with a burger and sweet potato fries.
The Hornet also has a creative drink list that is often enhanced by daily drink specials- not just the run of the mill margaritas or increasingly popular Moscow Mules, but some things you won't find in other area establishments.
Finally, the South-Broadway location outside and great atmosphere inside make The Hornet a must-try.
Three or four... three or four? For now I'm going to give The Hornet three stars, although it's probably closer to the 3.5 average it has here on Yelp. It's certainly A-OK, but I can't say I'm a fan. Yet.
After an underwhelming HH UYE at Adrift, Carly B. suggested we all head over to the Hornet for dinner. After discussing grilled cheese at HH, my heart was set on one for dinner. While it wasn't on the menu, our server was kind enough to let me order one off the children's menu. I paired it with their tomato soup. The grilled cheese and tomato soup hit the spot. That said, the soup tasted suspiciously like the soup served at Rooster and Moon and King Soopers. I'm pretty sure it's not homemade.
For dessert the five us split a "Pumpkin Tower". It's pumpkin brownies stacked with a cream cheese filling. Our server suggested we order more than one, saying we may get a bite each. However, the portion was ample and it was more like several bites each.
I have lived around the corner from The Hornet for over three years now, however last night was my first time there. Everyone thought that was crazy. They were right. It certainly won't take me three years to return.
I went to The Hornet this weekend with a coworker and her boyfriend. Â The happy hour specials were pretty good - a variety of appetizers to choose from for a low price as well as good deals on draft beers, wine, and well drinks. Â I decided on the homemade popcorn chicken - which was pretty standard, but enjoyable. Â The atmosphere is nice and I like the open bar area. Â I did not, however, like the plethora of babies that were in our area. Â I felt like I had to restrict my language when I was just looking to hang out. Â Too many babies in a bar is a bad recipe.
Review Source:This is the first restaurant we ate at after moving to Denver. Apparently it was the anchor business of South Broadway - before it became a thriving strip, this place was the first to really bring other businesses to the neighborhood. I can see why.
The first meal I ate here was the honey stung chicken and mashed potatoes. Holy mother of God, was that delicious. I can still taste it if I think hard enough. The combination of sweet honey with a spicy cayenne seasoning is the way to go. I now make mashed potatoes with ... honey. It's that good.
We brought family here on a weekend, and they had some sort of buy-one, get-one deal on well drinks. Ding! Ding!
Rather than order full meals, we shared a bunch of appetizers. The shining star was the Salvadoran Pupusa. What the hell is that, you say? Well, it's a soft corn tortilla with a corn and black bean slaw, some cheeses and spices. So, so, so good.
It's always bustling and a bit loud, but that's because everyone is having fun and enjoying some delicious food. So glad we started here for our first taste of Denver cuisine. It's a lovely joint.
This is a fun, relaxed place; great for kicking back. The minute you walk in, you'll see a good amount of bar space but plenty of tables for sitting with your group of friends, too. It's a place where everyone talks full voice and no one cares. Think hip diner with a decent beer menu.
Tam drank Colorado Glider Cider, though the Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale was tempting (wouldn't you want to try that?). I had a stroooong margarita loaded with ginger to accompany my fish taco ($4 and tasty). The menu here includes appetizers like artichoke fritters and cheese and potato pierogies ($6-$8) as well as items to share ($8-$11). We downed the calamari that was tossed with shrimp, olives and onions (and fried garlic that I avoided). Wings, fries and nachos are there on the menu, along with salads and soups, including pork and hominy green chili. Signature dishes ($12-$16) sounded good (I wanted to try the Guinness battered fish and chips or the rosemary chicken). And you can choose from about 20 sandwiches and burgers ($9 - $12).
The Hornet could be a good place to come with your team without breaking your budget. Happy hour 3-6 pm every day and after 10.
I don't know of a more solid and complete place to get some no-frills damn-good food in Denver.
The Hornet reflects the character of the modern urbanite in the menu which is ethnic but reigned in by the gravity of classical american fare, and balanced with fresh fruits and veggies. Pupusas sit alongside thai lettuce wraps and nachos on the app menu. Burgers of all types play nice with the Ahi wrap, which features seared fish and mango sauce. Entrees include a homey Honey Stung Chicken served with mashed potatoes and mildly spicy greens. If all else fails, a bowl of green chili can cure your ails.
If you're looking to save money, the Happy Hour menu has great food options, none of which has disappointed me so far. They range from $2-4 and usually 2 will do the trick. Pair it with a $3 microbrew and leave feeling just fine for less than $15. On the dinner menu, cheap eats can be had by pairing the green chili bowl (which has homini in it! yum!) with an appetizer or small salad for a simple dinner.
If you're not trying to focus on a small tab, then the majority of the food options will keep you well under $20 a person.
For a special night, when you're looking for something more polished than wraps and burgers, there are a few more formal dinner plates that will give you that meat, potatoes and veggie side dish fix you crave.
Finally, if you want to take it up another notch, there are daily dinner specials that get inventive and cost closer to $18 a person.
Really, there's something for every taste, budget and mood at the Hornet. Except maybe a romantic dinner.
Less often, I order drinks, but it's hard to resist a $3 microbrew happy hour, (4.5 normally which is right around average). Cocktails are around $10 and served in a tall glass. Though not particularly strong, they are well made. $4 specials for liquor and mixed drinks are featured daily.
Quality is consistent, and I've never suffered bad service. Hardly a week goes by without me eating there, so NEVER is really quite remarkable.
Keep it up, Hornet!
Recently, I've been taking advantage of the Hornet's happy hour, which is AWESOME. Â $3 pints of micros? Â I'm sold. Â Great selection too. Â They even have Colorado Cider Company's "Glider Cider' which would normally run around $6 elsewhere. Â And while I'm partial to beer, sometimes on an extremely hot day a Glider Cider sounds wonderful.....like right now. Â
Food ranges from average to pretty good- Loved the veggie burger I got recently. Â Some items haven't been all that great, but at $2-5 per item, it allows me to try new things and be okay with not loving them. Â During happy hour, two of us can usually get out of there with 2 drinks each and a few apps for around $18 minus tip.....not bad! Â We often substitute it for an early dinner/late lunch. Â
Their brunch $2 build your own Bloody Mary bar? Fantastic.  This way I can dump in as much horseradish and olives as I want (sorry for taking advantage and cramming  4+ olives in there, Hornet).  How had I been in here dozens of times and never knew they had a hidden back patio?  I don't know who was keeping me in the dark, but it's adorable.  Hip little spot without overdoing the "hipness"- they don't act like they're too cool for school.  Feels kind of European in a way.
Really great neighborhood bar and a place where locals seem to hang out.
They have great food, great beer selection, plenty of space and great service!! Â Their sweet potato fries are the best I have ever had, and the lobster mac and cheese is big enough to share (they graciously split the dish for us).
I LOVE the decor and the corner location in one of the coolest parts of Denver. Â If I lived here this would be my hang-out spot for sure.
Of all of the places I would be considered a regular, I think The Hornet may truthfully be my favorite. I've been frequenting this great restaurant for three years now (every week or so). And I have to say I'm quite pleased. The food and service can't be beat. The atmosphere is easy; very open to whatever crowd or event one might have.
I am pleased that I can call myself a regular at this great restaurant.
UPDATE!!
Received a nice response from Sean, the GM, along with a couple gift certificates to come back. The fella and I went back for brunch and had the same server. She was awesome and the food was great.
I really appreciate a business taking the time to reach out to a customer who had a less than pleasant experience. We will most certainly be back.
Heart you Hornet!
I really appreciate a business that really does care enough about their customers that they read reviews, take action, and respond to them.
The Hornet did just that with me. Â I was assured that my previous experience was not typical of The Hornet experience. Â So here I am today - in the restaurant as I type this review and I have to say that especially for Happy Hour, you can find the value in their menu. Â They have a dozen or so Happy Hour items ranging from pork tacos to falafel to nachos - all of which are $2-5. Â Drafts, House Wine, and Well drinks are only $3. Â This is every day from 3-6. Â I tried the homemade popcorn chicken which doesn't appear to be on their regular menu - they were addictive and I ate them all. Â I also got an order of nachos which weren't bad either.
Based on this experience, I'm more than likely to stop back in, if nothing else, for the Happy Hour.
Recently came here and was disappointed with the menu. It seems like it's gotten smaller...maybe it's just me.
Anywho, we started off with the calamari. It appeared to be a big portion, well mostly of onions and garlic. Boo.
Food was good, but not the extra something that I was use too.
Kind of a bummer, I really liked this place. I'm hesitant to head back now.
I just don't understand the rave of this place. Â The only thing I can rave about it the do-it-yourself bloody Mary bar. Â I was a bit Leary of it at first bc
Im a germ freak and I don't like a bunch of dirty little fingers on the food Im about to eat. Â BUT shockingly it was super CLEAN and organized!!! Â There were several options as far as garnishes and different kinds of tomato drink.
As for the food and service I says its all Meh. Â I just don't' understand why its ALWAYS crowded. Â Is it a Denver Staple?
Things people say in Denver, "Lets go to the Hornet!"
I am torn between 3 and 4 stars. I am definitely a fan. I roll into the Hornet almost weekly. The past 3 weeks I have had brunch there every weekend. The food is good. Not spectacular but good. The odd thing about the Hornet is the consistency of energy. There is always a customer buzz, partially because it's always so crowded, but the service is inconsistent.
The $2 Bloody Mary's are well worth the adventure.
The double Mimosa is probably my favorite.
The brunch menu has something for everyone. Check it out! It's always social hour.
I ask myself on a daily basis why The Hornet is so popular. The food is okay, drinks are okay, atmosphere is okay. But only okay. And yet, everyday I walk by and this place is packed to the gills, including with people who drove all the way form the suburbs to come here.
The only answer I can come up with is that Denver seriously lacks many good casual unpretentious food/drink options.
I would also like to mention that twice I have unwittingly eaten meat here. As a vegetarian of 15 years, this is annoying. The first time I ordered nachos. I did not specify chicken. Yet, after I had eaten quite a bit I realized there was chicken buried in the nachos. Disgusting. The second time, I ordered a veggie burger and added green chili as a topping. You'd think a waiter would mention that it has meat since someone was ordering a VEGGIE burger. They did not. These two experiences have left a sour taste in my mouth.
Yet, I will continue to come here, because of a lack of other options. And because it's so close to where I live.
I love this place! Â I have recently started going there for Happy Hour. Â 1/2 priced apps and $3 beer/wine specials. Â OK!
The food is always good. Â Which was surprising with the bar-like atmosphere. Â They have great dishes that are unique and creative. Â Try the steak skewers; it's not often you find fried plantains at a bar!
