And the Worst service/attitude" goes to....the waitress literally THREW our plates and chopsticks. There was a dirty napkin in front of me when I sat down, and my tea cup was still wet...
Horrible food, dim sum included - chicken feet did not taste fresh (yes, there are fresh tasting feet.. as much as that sounds sounds contradictory)
    Ugly and dreary decor

    Perfectly lovely dimsum.

We came in on a Sunday afternoon for dimsum with the family. It was busy, but not packed.  The selection was delicious, and I really liked the dumplings and humbow. Everything was so simple, but it was deliciously satisfying and no-fuss.  I recommend the vegetables as well for a breakup to the fried and bready options.

The only complaint I had was that the ventilation of the restaurant meant that the sterno from the carts filled the room with a petroleum smell that was unappetizing.  Perhaps it's too be expected for dimsum, but it was rather off-putting.

I will come here again with my family, as that the food was good, and I am especially interested in their non-dimsum options.

The food was alright. I have had better. But the staff was awful. Our waitress was extremely rude and messed up our orders and then proceeded to get mad at us for it trying to blame it on us even though she made the mistake. So for the service and unfriendly staff alone, 1 Star. Not winning Hunan Cafe...

I guess I'm spoiled because I used to live along the Route 9 corridor west of Boston -- an area with large Chinese and Indian populations and a dozen or so terrific restaurants from those cuisines. Most of the Chinese food I've had in and around Stamford is pretty lackluster, but I refuse to eat at P.F. Chang's, so Hunan Cafe is a decent alternative for the basics.

I have not been impressed by their fancier attempts, however, and find them overpriced for what they are. Stick to sweet & sour shrimp, vegetable bean curd soup and other standard fare, and you'll get a decent meal at a fair price.

Weekend dim sum is pretty good (hey, I can't make it myself), but the selection is pretty narrow.

If you know Chinese food, this place is great.  Dim sum is always amazing, as is the baby bok choy.  I've been going to the place for over 10 years, and it is always a family favorite.

The food is great.  PF Changs is not even close.  Definitely come here for the best spare ribs and chicken/broccoli.  Yes, management has no personality and is blunt.  So what?  Order by phone, get yummy takeout and enjoy!!  The best around.

I agree with others about the lack of personality or interest on the part of the staff, but the food was on par (or better) with my fav Chinese place in MI. Good portions, and tea, fried wonton chips with sweet sauce came free with the meal.  Will definitely be frequenting this place!

Like many restaurants of its kind, Hunan Cafe is a dying Chinese restaurant, giving way to P.F. Chang and his cookie-cutter horrors. The cowardly American palate prefers consistency over originality, leaving places like Hunan Cafe in the dust, unable to keep up.

Despite their location in the ultra-upscale community of Greenwich, CT, Hunan Cafe is old, run down, and just kind of sad. Don't get me wrong, the food itself is VERY good, especially their Dim Sum Sundays. But the experience that surrounds the food is highly depressing, leaving me to often seek greener pastures for Chinese food.

Frankly, I'd rather go to Yangtze Riverside, order takeout, and sit outside on a nice park bench. It's too bad, because I wish only the best for places like Hunan Cafe.

Many of the previous reviewers mention, the curt, rude and unfriendly staff.  Couple that with inept order taking and being argumentative when attempting to have the waiter correct the order.

Food was OK, but service is to be desired.    There has to be better places to spend your dining dollars in this area.  Skip this place for the attitude alone.

I used to really enjoy getting takeout from Hunan Cafe.  We hadn't been back in about 8 months and decided to try it again.  The experience was terrible from start to end.

The woman answering the phone was incredibly rude.  Not the kind of treatment you'd expect -- we weren't even calling at a peak hour. She was very sharp and harsh.

If the food was amazing I wouldn't mind dealing with the treatment.  But when we got our order my food wasn't even what I asked for.  That being said, it wasn't tasty for what it was.  I think the sauce consisted of salt and oil.  My husband did not enjoy his duck.  I didn't have it so I can't comment on what was wrong.  And to top it off -- No fortune cookies (I know that's just a small detail, but still).

Bad experience overall, and I wouldn't recommend.  They only thing Hunan Cafe has going is they are really close to where I live.  If you do go, stick with the lo mein, spring rolls, and egg rolls.

Typically take out from this place, have been a customer for a couple of years now. Take out orders are ready in 10-15 minutes.
Dim Sum on weekends is very good: broad selection, adequately priced and delicious chinese broccoli :)
Food quality is fairly good and service is OK. In the years I have been going there they have not yet made a mistake in serving what I ask for. However, they do take their jobs seriously (in a very serious way) and it might give some people the impression that they are 'cold'.
Will be coming back for a while, they have not disappointed me so far.

This is a good take out place for chinese food. Love their beef broccoli and so far, everything we've tried here is decent. We usually just call for pick up but the few times that we've actually eaten inside, they're very curt, but not in a rude way. We have also tried the dimsum and it's pretty good, especially the shumais.

I've been several times for the Dim Sum on the weekends (12-3). It's been hit or miss. Some days it's fresh and delicious, other days it's rubbery and old.

I've tried a couple dishes from the regular menu and they have been very good.

I wish the Dim Sum was more consistently fresh. Until then, 4 stars.

I went there for Dim Sum on a Sunday morning. It was fairly good. The food was nice, and very close to what Chinatown of NY has. Staffs were friendly, price wasn't too bad either.

I didn't try order from Kitchen, but I think I will go back for Dim Sum for sure.

Compare to the one that New Haven has, this Dim Sum has less choices, and smaller dishes too. However, the size doesn't matter much because you actually cant eat as many different type dim sum as you want.

Give it a try, you might like it.

Let me start off by saying most of the food is really good most of the time.  Why a 2-star review?

First and foremost, they use MSG in "everything" (their words, not mine).  I did not realize this until I had taken a few bites and was very happy with the food (pan fried noodles, beef stir fry).  I called to ask and sure enough...

I think I've spoken to the same person every time I've called for take out and he's not very nice.  He has not messed up my order though so I guess that takes priority over friendliness.

The restaurant itself is pretty tacky inside.  We really only went here (past tense - no more now that we know about the MSG) to pick up food and I would say that's how it is best enjoyed.

I looked at this place for my wedding menu.  We wanted real authentic Chinese food.  They delivered that and more!  Service was great.  We got one-on-one personal customer service from the owner, Anthony.  I noticed that many people said that they weren't friendly, but they're real nice if you're nice to them first.  Didn't charge us for the tasting at all and were very accomodating.  If you want more authentic Chinese food, just ask the wait staff...it's not on the menu!  :)  Dim Sum is not bad, but it isn't the best I've ever had.  Love the Egg Custard though!  Really well done!

The dim sum is amazing Sat/Sun 1130-3.  Been there a few times. Never had anything but the dimsum carts.  The staff is extremely business oriented because they're always swamped and never have time to smile at you - there are always 10 people waiting to sit down...and another 40 people sitting at tables waiting to get more goodness off the steamed cart.  Reminds me of my days growing up in Brooklyn on Ave U in little bk chinatown.

4 stars for the dim sum (5 to be found in Greenwich, CT)
so-so for the regular lunch menu

This is one of the more authentic chinese restaurants in the area. Yeah, the restaurant doesn't have great decor and there aren't constant smiling faces from staff, but that means that it probably has more authentic chinese dishes on the menu. They even had soup dumplings, which were good. I haven't tried the dim sum yet, but will definitely have to try it.

Not bad for a random stop en route from New Haven to Long Island, but I don't think I'd eat here if I lived in the area.  The food was pretty decent, but the place felt pretty unwelcoming, what with the sterile decor and the stern service.  The middle-aged Chinese woman who served as our waitress was particularly gruff, if efficient and not overtly mean.  I was a little bit scared of her, to be honest, and I'd advise against bringing a child.

But like I said, the food was fine.  We got some addictive wonton chips with sweet and sour sauce before we ordered.  The three of us went family style and got steamed dumplings, honyu chicken, and sauteed string beans.  The dumplings were not my favorite.  The skins were thick and Play Doh doughy.  The filling was good, though you can't go too wrong with ground meat and garlic.  As for the two larger dishes, the sauces were very goopy, but they were pretty palatable.  The honyu chicken, which I gathered from the undescriptive menu was chicken with spicy red sauce, turned out to be very much breaded and fried, a la orange chicken.  I don't prefer my chicken this way, but I'll admit it was pretty tasty.  The meat was tender and the sauce was sweet and spicy, if a little less spicy than I like.  It came with good snappy sugar snap peas.  I also enjoyed the string beans, which had great texture thanks to the little beady insides.  They were in some kind of black bean sauce that was fairly decent.

At the end we got a really bad orange, and I'm not sure how, but fortune cookies that tasted like cardboard.  Even so, Hunan Cafe wasn't a bad spot to take care of an on-the-road dinner, granted, those standards are low.

80s Era Decor, Unfriendly Staff, Good for Take Out

This place is an artifact from the 1980s, aqua paint on every surface, black metal chairs and back-lit sand blasted oriental glass panels. The cold sterility of the dining room is matched by the unfriendly, unwelcoming staff.  I have stopped by to order takeout probably 40 times over the past two years and the guy at the counter has never greeted me or smiled -- not once.

However, the Hunan Cafe's kitchen is highly efficient and cranks out orders very quickly. It's good, fast Chinese takeout and they do a brisk business on weeknights. For a small up charge, you can get white meat chicken in any chicken dish. Also, if you ask for extra spice, you get it. So, while I admire their kitchen team, I can only recommend this place for take out -- unless you just need an 80s flashback and don't care about service.

They do have a limited service bar up by the cash register -- which is usually a bad sign.  Can't vouch for the quality of the drinks.

Was a pleasant surprise to find this place for dinner on a road trip from New York to Boston.  The taste was comparable to Ping's in NYC Chinatown.  We had boneless BBQ ribs as appetizer, sweet and sour pork which had crispy breading (tricky to prepare) and ma la po jumbo shrimp.

I absolutely agree with the first reviewer about the coolness of the staff.  Not one smile from the moment we arrived, but they were responsive to our needs.  The food was actually quite good during lunchtime and very reasonably priced.  I'd recommend it if you are someone who doesn't care a lot about ambiance.

So-so Chinese food.  Eating in the restaurant was never a problem for me, and I have not yet tried take-out.  One thing you won't find at Hunan Cafe is warmth.  The wait staff is cold as they take your order and deliver your food, rarely deviating from the "script."  Better Chinese restaurants can be found nearby in Greenwich (Asiana) and Old Greenwich (Oriental Gourmet).
