In my search for the perfect Egg Roll I rate Hunan West is the best so far.  I picked up 6 of them as an appetizer for Friday night beer tasting (Scotch Ales & Wee Heavys).  $9.45 and they were ready on time.

Good food and good service for take out or delivery.  Really like the crispy beef and Peking duck (half or whole).  It's by no means fine dining but a nice neighborhood Chinese place.

Hunan West is perfectly located in Kings Park and the service is fast and efficient whether dinning in or taking out. But if there was ever a restaurant that needed a new chef with better recipes, this is it! The food here has being going downhill for years and the last take out we ordered was simply not good. The fried meat dumplings were hard and the sauce lacked any discernible flavor. The crab Rangoon tasted like cardboard. The Kung Pao Chicken was dry and hot, but tasteless. Definitely don't make the mistake of ordering Thai menu items; they don't even resemble Thai food. My New Year's wish is that the ever kind and friendly owners of this nice establishment make significant improvements to the quality of food and the recipes they use!

Been going here all my life. This is probably one of the more overlooked/underrated chinese restaurants in the area. You absolutely cannot beat their lunch special which consists of soup, entree w/ egg roll and side or rice for $5-7. I usually get the General Tso's chicken but I've tried about a dozen other entrees, all of which are superb. Only had one bad experience here, but they are forgiven. For the value and quality of the food, this ranks as my primary go-to Chinese restaurant.

Went her for lunch and got one of the combos.  Lots of food, quick service.  Traditional style Chinese food place.  My friend did find a stone in his rice, which the manger apologized for.  This place has been open for awhile

I only come here for the Crispy Beef Szechuan Proper. Seriously, that's all I order. It's delicious. It typically comes out piping hot, and is CRUNCHY, but the meat is relatively tender. Order it spicy.

If you order this for delivery/take out, ask them to poke holes in the top of the Tupperware so the steam can get out. The steam makes the coating on the beef soft, and it's not crunch. It's really not that hard or horrible to heat it up in the microwave for like 1-2 minutes when you get home, and it will still be crispy.

My boyfriend and I order take-out from here quite frequently. I also studied / lived in China for a year so I know what real Chinese food tastes like, and Hunan West manages to hit the nail on the head with some dishes (while completely missing the mark on others).

Out of what I have tried on the menu, the two dishes that seem most authentic to me are the "Chicken with Curry" dish, and the "Peking style shredded pork" dish. But some basic beef dishes (e.g. Beef and Broccoli) were too greasy and rather bland. I usually only order chicken, shrimp, or pork dishes from here as a result. Additionally, their appetizers like Crab Rangoon and Spring rolls are okay, but somewhat disappointing when compared to other Chinese food restaurants in the area.

However, for those that don't need anything super authentic, I'd suggest trying the classic Americanized menu items like Sesame Chicken, General Tso's Chicken (and Shrimp) are good, as well as their Sweet and Sour Chicken.

For the price, the service, and the quick amount of time they get orders out (10-15 minutes) it's definitely worth trying. But if you're looking for a more authentic experience, I'd suggest trying China Star in Fairfax, VA

Would not recommend.  The crispy beef proper is not crispy because pieces are way too big.  The crab ragoon is the worst I've ever had tasting so fishy with imitation crab flavor.  The singapore noodles are supposed to be spicy and lack flavor.  Won't be ordering again.  Don't understand how this place gets positive reviews unless you've never had quality Chinese food.

The food is above average for strip mall Chinese dining. It is clean, the service is usually pretty quick. The dumplings -fried or steamed - are always fresh. They make a very good crispy fried pancake. I would stay away from any fish that is not a daily special and is made with fresh fish. Allan is the owner - ask him.

What is AMAZING is their mai tai and suffering bastard cocktails! This is the only Asian restaurant that I order alcohol. The mai tais in particular are delicious. I do not drive after having just one - they are loaded with alcohol. Yummy! I have been trying to get Allan to give me the recipe for years. I cannot seem to replicate them at home. Try one - make sure you have someone to drive you home.

Hunan West is by far one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever been too.  I drive out from Ashburn (~40 minute drive) just to eat this amazing food.

    Crispy Chicken Proper
    General Tso Chicken
    Creechy Chicken
    Hunan Chicken

OMG my mouth is watering just thinking about it.  And what about their fricken egg rolls?  HELLO!?!?!? Awesome Food.  Awesome Service.

    Andrea is my favorite waitress!

Really good food, prices are resonable and the staff is moderately friendly. I have been a handful of times now and have never been disappointed with the food. I would recommend and return often despite it being about 8 miles from my house.

Amazing. Never have I been to a restaurant where they bring you water the moment you walk in. Complimentary. Free. And there's always a person going around making sure the glass is always full. VERY classy, especially for a Chinese restaurant. The food is ace. I don't want to ruin the surprise, but expect more than a fortune cookie at the end if you're eating in! (Let's be mature here, haha)

As a neighborhood restaurant, we love it!  I mean, it's not fancy-schmancy Chinatown, but it's consistent and dependable!  We've been going there for over 25 years (both in-house dining and delivery) and even though we try the new ones that spring up (we seem to get a new menu every other day), we ALWAYS come back to Hunan West.
Crispy Beef Schezwan Proper is delicious!
    Support this great local restaurant!!

Service is good.  The food is what you expect.  The chicken and beef Szechwan proper are great!  I like the chicken best.

Never and I mean never get the Vietnamese sumer roll, I got this tonight, it smelled like feet and I could not even take a bite.  I replace everything it touched, my plate, fork and knife.   YUCK.

I can't fathom how Hunan West only has 3.5 stars! I've been going to this place since I was a little kid and even went to their old restaurant before the whole shopping center was renovated. After I moved out of the area for college I STILL have not found a casual Chinese restaurant that compares to Hunan West.

It's great for both take-out/delivery and eating in, but I've definitely had delivery much more. The food is always great and delivered super quickly, usually way before the estimated time. They've even come to re-deliver when they messed up the order (rare, but it happened once). The people are very nice. Free sherbet! Awesome.

I must admit, I still drive 30 minutes out of my way sometimes just to get my Chinese fix.

I grew p in Burke and have been ating take out, delivery and dine in at Hnan since before the construction (which even then was great). I currently live in Los Angeles bt whenever I come home I make it a point to eat here. It is the BEST chinese food I have ever had. The owner is an active part of the business, service is good, everyhing is clean and the food never misses.

If you are contimplating eating Chinese because they are usually a hit or miss, don't on this place. Hunan West is fantastic and even with all of the places in Los Angeles I still say this is the best.....I think I'll order something now actually. haha Enjoy!

I really didn't like this place.

I understand that the Burke area is lacking in restaurants.  I can also see how this restaurant could appeal to others.  The restaurant looks nicer than most places in the area, and the pricing is extremely reasonable.  However, my dining experience was greasy and underwhelming.  No thanks.

This is the best Chinese in the Burke and Springfield area by far.  Great owner and fantastic service.  They delivery service is very quick as well.  Order off menu and they will do it.  I have been eating dine in and take out from them for over 10 years.

My go to spot when in VA for chinese. I've been going here since it was a hole in the wall and even then, the service and food were deliciousness. It was updated some years back and when I returned post re-model, the owner (usually on the bar) still remembered my name and had the same warm smile.

Try the sha-cha chicken and the combination pan fried noodles = awesomeness. I now live in MD but when I'm in the area, I definitely stop to eat here.

Like many Chinese restaurants, its three kinds of sauce on difference servings of meat and vegetables.  Something tasty to eat when you're hungry, don't look for any great culinary experience.  It is the perfect thing when you want to eat out of little cardboard boxes while you watch late night movies.

The servings are pretty generous, and seems everything I've ordered has been tasty, except for the salad with grilled chicken. If you're looking for the classic chinese chicken salad, this ain't it.

Best thing is the staff, make me feel like family, even though I usually am eating by myself. If you can get Ying to smile, it will make your day!

Thank you to all those who posted that their General Tso's was egh and that their Crispy Beef Proper was the way to go, it's redeemed this place for me.  I might try the chicken next time.  It's tiny strips fried with a very light coating, slightly sweet and served with sliced carrots and celery, sprinkled with sesame seeds.  I wish it had a sauce but that probably wouldn't make it so crispy.  Great on the brown rice, and their portions are big enough to make 2 meals.

Delivery as others have mentioned was very quick, probably around 20 minutes (minimum is $15 which is great).

Consistently good! I like the shrimp dishes & orange chicken is my kids fave. Ultra fast delivery. Wish they offered 1/2 size dishes at dinner as the servings are large & slightly pricey for takeout. If you choose to eat there it is nice, comfortable dining with sherbet ball for dessert! Try it!

We have been eating at this Chinese restaurant for 15+ years (started going back when the Kings Park Shopping Center had a whole different layout!)

The food is wonderful. Everything from the soups to the entrees.  If you go for dinner, they give you a nice lil cup of sorbet in addition to your fortune cookie. Delicious!  We especially love going for their lunch specials.  Favorite dishes: Shrimp/Chicken Hunan, Kung Pao Chicken, Lomein, Crispy Chicken Schezuan Proper, and...the hot and sour soup!

Service is great.  Our water glasses are kept full the entire meal. Food comes out extremely fast and piping hot :)

This is our go to restaurant in Burke when family is in town.  It never disappoints.  Plan on going her another 15+ years!

This is my family's neighborhood Chinese place.   The service is great.  Your water glass will always be full.  The hot towels after the meal are a really nice touch.  You'll have to ask for chopsticks, though, because it's not the most authentic Chinese restaurant in the area.

The menu has hits and misses.  The hot & sour soup, potstickers, egg rolls, crispy beef proper, szechwan & hunan beefs, moo shu, and fried rice are hits.  Anything that has tomatoes in it, the salty scallops, and anything with a sweet and sour sauce are misses.  Ditto the crab rangoon, pancake and dan dan noodle appetizers.  A few Thai dishes were added to the menu recently and are good but not great.

my family and I live around the corner and go here often.
it's our 'go to' Chinese take-out place
we have dined in the restaurant before with our four young kids and the service was outstanding!
no, it's not authentic but sometimes I just want this kind of Chinese and when I do, these guys are great!
    delivery is fast!

Excelent selection, great service. The restaurant seems to evolve throughout the night to, from rather casual with great food for lunch, to super restaurant as soon as the sun starts to go down, with fancier menus, and more class overall.

If you want to take a group of friends go for lunch, if your on a date go to dinner.

The only thing that gets me, is that they keep your water glass completely full all the time.  Now while others may like that, it makes me look like I have an old mans bladder.

    One of my favorite places!

This is your typical slightly greasy but tasty Chinese food place.  The food did not make me feel sick after though so big thumbs up for that!

The lunch specials were divinely priced- for two people we each had hot tea, soup, egg rolls and a large portion of beef broccoli and general tso's chicken with rice for a grand total of $16!

Downside is this was not very high quality food.  The sauces were definitely full of cornstarch and very salty...kind of thick and gloopy.

I would highly recommend this if you are craving bad for you Chinese but not if you're looking for anything authentic or fresh.

I ordered take-out from here with the roommate.

I made the mistake of ordering the Pa-Nang Curry. It was this nasty looking neon yellow-green color. The seasoning was ok, but that doesn't forgive the texture of the sauce or the chicken.

    Ew. Don't do it.

Lunch combo is great. You get entree, soup, and egg or spring roll. Depending on entree choice for $6-8. Service is great, and sometimes humoris. There is a guy whos only job is to fill your water. At times filling my class after every sip.

Really? This place a 4 star Chinese restaurant? I gave a 3 and I was generous since I used to work here a couple years ago.

If you're looking for a cheap AMERICANIZED Chinese food, this is the place for you. The owner is nice, big portions and the food is pretty tasty (Maybe a little on the greasy side). I especially like their Fan fried dumplings.
However, since I am reviewing this restaurant as a Chinese food restaurant, I am giving a 3. You will never find food like these anywhere in China, and China is a big place. If you like PF Chang's (Worse place I've ever been), this place is for you. Cheaper (Especially the lunch menu), bigger portions, and tastier.
I don't want people looking up Chinese food and come here thinking it's authentic since they see 4 stars.  JUST BEWARE! I would give this place a 4 if they have a section for Americanized Chinese food.

Hunan West is my family's favorite local restaurant for a casual night out, and we come here often. The ambiance is welcoming, the owner and staff friendly, the food reasonably priced and just fine, with generous portions. Beef with snow peas, moo shi chicken or pork, all the fried rices, egg drop soup, fried wantons, basil and curry Thai dishes, classic egg rolls--it's all good. The real gem here, though, is the bar: Hunan West serves a Mai Tai that's much like and actually tops the original Trader Vic's. (And if you've had one at one of the few remaining Trader Vic's, you know what I'm talking about.) Hunan West's rivals metro D.C.'s finest one-time tiki bar Honolulu's, back before Wilson Bridge construction did it in. Hunan West has an incredibly extensive menu of classic and crafted cocktails that run about half what they'd go for most anyplace else. I'd try a new one every visit ... were I not so hooked on those Mai Tais. Try one yourself. I promise you'll come back!

This place is pretty amazing. Its my favorite carry out location and eating there is also good. Food is pretty cheap and good. Their portions are pretty big too. Try the crispy chicken schezuan proper...its...freaking AMAZING!!!! you'll fall in love with this place after you do.

I love this place. Its pretty close to our house so its our choice chinese place- but we are picky when it comes to chinese.
My hubby loves Beef Schezuan Proper (crispy beef) and they do a killer job of it here where many places don't even make it. We order Lo Mein and combination fried rice for the kids and its thier favorite. I ahve had a number of things on the menu and haven't been disappointed yet.

Now the BEST thing tho-- we usually order delivery and they are there- I KID YOU NOT- in under 20 minutes! Faster than any pizza man!

They aren't the cheapest around- so a balanced meal will cost you about $30, but its sooo good.

Just went here recently and tried some of their stuff from the chinese new year's menu. The chinese rice cake with chicken and the crab meat shanghai noodles were great~ Really tasted like how my chinese grandma use to cook me food and really healthy too. Plus, the waitress was really nice and we even got a little dessert at the end for free :) The only thing was the line to get a booth (for more privacy) took a while. All in all, good food, nice people, and great price. Definitely coming back to try their other entrees.

    2.5 Stars

    You get full,
    it's cheap,
sometimes its tastier than other times.

I get lunch specials here from time to time and I like that I can call and pick it up fairly quickly. The kung pao chicken was very tasty. The general tso and orange chicken, and the curry chicken were very mediocre sometimes. (once some of the chicken was kinda dry and burnt..)

Honestly the quality of food from here is medium low.... However I still eat here cause it's cheap, i'm kinda cheap, and i always end up with 2 meals worth of food. And hey, two meals of food for 5-7 bucks is pretty good hahahha. When I want something nicer I pay for it, this satisfies my.. im hungry... and i need to eat something crave.

Perhaps the other stuff is better.. ill probably never find out. I can cook better than the food from here.

I've been here once. The atmosphere is adequate, but the food is not up to par. With my experience eating Chinese food, this food is a bit plain. I had the Chow Foon noodles (too greasy for this dish) and General Tso's Chicken (not crunchy enough). I don't understand why restaurants do not make the chicken crispy. The sole purpose of frying the chicken in the first place is to make it crispy right? They serve tiny one-bite serbert for dessert which was a cool touch.

In conclusion, I'm not compelled to eat here again. The service was okay; the waiter was friendly. The time waiting for food was short. Noodles and chicken are my favorite food but this place just doesn't cut it. While having good service is a plus, I'm still the practical type and rather go out for Grade A food. This would be a C in my books.

Hunan West is a somewhat more "upscale" Chinese restaurant situated in the Kingspark Shopping Center.

My boyfriend and I were deciding between the four eateries (if you consider Domino's one), and we opted for Chinese. I was in the mood for Chow Foon (a wide, flat noodle dish).

To my surprise, the restaurant was actually quite busy for a Tuesday night. Must be good, right? Well, not necessarily.

The boyfriend ordered Tofu and Vegetables (Brown Sauce on the Side) and I ordered Chow Foon with vegetables.

Hunan West actually has 15 vegetarian items on the menu, plus about 3 vegetarian appetizers. That was nice, but I don't think Chinese food of all Asian food is meant to be "vegetarianized" (but Sunflower does it pretty well).

My noodle dish was a little too salty with not enough vegetables. Same goes for the Tofu dish, there was way too much tofu. They don't skimp on the portions. They're freakin' huge!

The service was really friendly though. Our water glasses were refilled almost every five minutes (or less). We drink like fish and it's a major pet-peeve and common dining no-no if our glasses are left empty. (Restaurant managers, take note!)

I wouldn't come back again, but that's because the food didn't exactly please my vegetarian tastes. If you're an omnivore, who knows. Hunan West may be the best Chinese restaurant (dine-in and delivery) in the Burke area.

Would you like a shot of Sake at 1pm?  Here's your spot

This place is bunched up next to a menagerie of crap stores, but the food is good.  You get more food for your dollar than any other Chinese restaurant, plus they are the fastest servers I've ever seen.  Usually it takes longer to figure out what you want than it is to actually get it.  The noodle platters are their specialty... stick with that.
