I'm sorry, but my first time at this place was not good at all...  I know it's a hole-in-the-wall kind of place but once I walked in all I could think was that they could really use cleaning this place up.  Almost all of the tables were dirty and plenty of scraps of trash and dirt on the floor.  The prices were very reasonable and my italian beef was hot but  was actually on the drier side and the fries are very generic.  Finally I ordered a Dr.Pepper with no ice and when I get it it felt like the lady filled it up with ice and just filled the cracks... Not going there again, and if you do I hope your experience is better.

Amazing jumbo hotdogs! Italian beef is ok. Prices are very reasonable.

Hoozah, 5$ for a hamburger meal. It's nothing spectacular or to die for, but if you're on a budget like most of UofC students are, this is a good stop.

All I've ever had here are the gyros and fries. And they. are. SO. good. that I keep going back for more gyros and fries.

Fresh delicious tomatoes, delectable sauce, hot, perfectly seasoned meat. Thumbs up.

    Cash only.

I don't understand why it's so hard to get a descent meal in Hyde Park.  Glad I found this place- I can order sushi from the Sit Down only so many times...

I had the gyro combo:  gyro, fries, and a drink.  Total $7

I've been twice so far and both were delicious!  Finding parking can be a pain, but I'm thinking this is going to be my go-to place for a quick bite.  Note:  cash only.

I frequent this place a fair amount and the food is decent. The portion size is a bit on the small side but it's always fresh and hot.

The hamburgers are very thin so sometimes you could feel like you're eating just bread. Also, the fries are VERY thin. If you want thicker cut fries try Nathan's a few doors down.

The service is always great and the gray/blond guy always at the counter is friendly and likable.

This is a solid Hyde Park establishment.

This is one of my favorite food spots in hyde park. It's super cheap. $2.50 hamburgers and $5 meals. The food is DELICIOUS. They have the best hamburgers, and french fries.

Although I love the food I'm giving it 4 stars, because they only take cash, they've messed up my order a couple times before and the fact that a guy who worked there yelled at me for nibbling on a subway cookie (Keep in mind I bought a hamburger meal) I get the fact that there's no outside food, but a fucking cookie? Really? After I spent 5 bucks on food? And during the summer, the restaurant is boiling. I can't even sit down and eat because it's always so hot.

However, the woman who works here. Sophie (I think that's her name) is a sweetheart.  She always has a smile on her face when I come in.

I just wish they would start taking debit cards and invest in air conditioning.

This place has really good cheeseburgers!  I suppose the gyros are good, lots of people get the dinner, it's not one of my choices, but try the burgers!

Remember when this place just opened.  I was living in one of the apartments next door...this is almost right across the street from "Ribs n Bibs".  This was a place to get good gyros.

Now THIS is what I'm talking about!!

Five stars if you want a Gyros! I ordered a Gyros Dinner because the Gyros Sandwiches I'd ordered from OTHER PLACES in the area were skimpy at best. When the Gyros from Hyde Park Gyros arrived, it was HUGE!!! LOL! I looked at it like :O ...there is enough there for two large sandwiches (Guess what I'm having for dinner tomorrow). The meat was HOT, fresh and delicious. The onions, tomatoes were extremely fresh and cool. The sauce was light and fresh - not like some places where it's slightly pasty. AND it arrived fast. I will ONLY order Gyros from this place from now on.

I really love this place. It's sort of hole-in-the-wall, but their selection is really good. Most of the time I stick with a simple burger or Chicago-style hot dog. The owners/clerks are friendly and you never have to wait very long for your food which is always a plus. Maybe not the most amazing restaurant ever, but worth it for decent food at good prices.

    Cash only however.

I came here so many times in high school and each time I drive or walk by, I get memories. I went here for lunch on the day of September 10th, 2001 while on the phone with my dad who was back in New York and he told me he'd be at the World Trade Center giving a lecture. I remember because the next day when 9/11 happened I thought that was the last convo I'd ever have with him. A week later (and we found out he was okay) I'd returned here and the guy at the counter asked me if my dad was okay. It was weird he'd overheard my convo but I found it really sweet that he'd remembered and also thought enough to ask about my dad. Since then, I've been a fan of this place. The service is excellent. I came here when I looked for a place to handle a larger working lunch in Hyde Park and people wanted this type of food, I went here. They were able to prepare everything despite the time being during their lunch rush (filled with students from the high school) and even stopped to help me carry the bags to my car.

The burgers are good, char grilled and served how you like (extra cheese, no pickles, grilled onions, etc) and the food is a bit on the greasy side but consistent. I've never eaten a polish here, or EVER, but I've heard that they are good. I've also heard that the italian beef sandwiches and chili dogs are great too. I've never had a bad meal but I don't come here often, as the food is not the healthiest to eat.

Cash only, but usually meals will run you less than $10, so it won't break the bank.

This place is great for a budget fast food that does not have grease dripping from all over the place. When I get tired of subway this is where I go.

    Thumbs up:
Food: Gyros are awesome. If you order Gyros meal make sure you have two people because it is tons of food. they give you two thick naans and about a pound of meat. I made two extra large gyros and still had enough meat for two more. My wife ordered a burger and loved it.

    Service: Prompt and friendly

    Thumbs down:
Cleanliness: the place is a bit dirty. I would not take my date here.

Overall, this is a great place to grab a quick bite :)

Food is good, really, but don't ever fucking order delivery. Took an hour and I'm two blocks away, I should have just gotten off my ass and gone to get it. Everything is cold and soggy. Absolutely fucking ridiculous. Take heed, don't be lazy or you'll get a shit meal.

i have never ate in this place when i lived a block away i always picked up, now i have them deliver. i always get the same thing gyro cheese burger combo fries with mild sauce, bf had a sub that he has been eating all day. so every time it goes like this i eat the fries out the bag drenched in mild sauce as i eat a layer of the gyro meat off the burger, get full out away, come back a few hours later eat the gyro cheeseburger. milkshakes are good, fried mushrooms if they have them are kinda nasty, cheap food quick delivery.

I am a fan of their polish (Chicago style), their fries, and their service. The gyros are definitely better eaten in-store, they get a little dry after delivery. My husband really likes the polish and the chili dog. I'm not terribly fond of the burger but have only eaten it via delivery, it might be better in-store as well. The ham sub it pretty good too if you are looking for a cold sandwich.

We've had delivery (no minimum order, $2.50 delivery fee), pick-up and eat-in; good, quick service no matter what. Oh, cash only, but you won't need that much $ there to fill your belly.

Don't expect anything fancy in the store, the booths are ripped and wobbly and the overall look is tired and worn out but it's good food for a good price.

All in all, I'm a fan and loyal customer.

When I first moved into the neighborhood, I went in search of a go-to gyros restaurant.  I ate at Hyde Park Gyros a couple of times, and now I have decided that this will not fill the void.  The gyros are OK, pretty mediocre; not very flavorful and a little dry.  I'd eat there if I needed a gyros really bad, but well, that's about the only reason I'd return.

Friendly folks, and really solid (and cheap) gyros and Italian beef. The dogs are pretty good too. Very generous servings, and just greasy enough for my taste.

Super fast delivery-they were at my door 14 minutes after I called.  The gyro meat is crispy and flavorful without being greasy, and there was so much piled into the pita that I had to take a few bites before I could seal my sandwich.  Unlike many places that serve a mayo-like concoction on their Pitas, there were visible shards of cucumber floating around the tzitziki.  The fries were a little salty, but not too greasy like they are at many Chicago haunts.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I think fondly of this place, and have no problem walking back in to get whatever strikes my mood here.

I suppose part of the reason I like this place so much is because this is where I first learned to love patty melts, and the one they have here is still one of the best.

I remember constantly trying to get them to just put the pickle in to the sandwich (and failing), since I love it with the onions and cheese, but that's a small thing.

The patty's not going to be big and thick, but it's cheap and still delicious.

My girlfriend likes the turkey burgers here. The fries are good. If I'm not wrong I used to like the marinated chicken breast from here too.

Used to do a lot of take out from here, but if you like hanging out in divey diners, this place will be right up your alley. I might be wrong, but I also like the deep friend mushrooms and onion rings from this place.

Hype Park Gyros is cheap and delivers, which is a great start, especially considering that its chief Hyde Park dog/beef/gyro/burger joint Sammy's Touch does not deliver.

But the food is the real seller here. HPG has the best dog you're gonna find in Hyde Park, as well as good Italian beef, very good gyros, and the extraordinarily cheap, filling, and mouthwatering "big baby" cheeseburger. To correct August, the big baby is NOT a gyro, but a double cheeseburger with the cheese placed between the patties so as to melt in a most glorious fashion, and topped with mustard, ketchup, pickle, and a heaping mound of tantalyzingly soft and tasty grilled onions. The big baby, which is a local South Side staple little known elsewhere, is Hyde Park Gyros' ace in the hole.

This place has just OK fast food. The Italian beef sandwiches and gyros are tasty, but not as good as their brethren at other local greaseholes. It's a good choice only if you're in the area and have a junk food jones.

The prices are low, and they deliver. A super-loaded gyro is called a "big baby," very Chicago. And gravy bread is only a buck.

Want to impress your girlfriend? Take her here and declare that "the lady will have the Big Baby Meal, large RC, with a side of gravy bread." You'll be swoonbait, no problem!

NOTE: It's in the neighborhood that I live so I try to be easy on these folks.  I'll go again to make sure that I was not being a bit hard in the review process.

I went here with a friend.  We both are gyros fanatics.  You can always catch us hitting up a great place in Greektown for a good gyro.  However since I don't live near Greektown, its important to INVEST in restuarants in your neighborhood.  Also, I didn't feel like driving to the west loop to grab a quick bite to eat either.

So I happened to be driving and landed upon Hyde Park Gyros.  I can tell that this place has history.  From the old-tattered booth seats to the fact that they don't credit cards, this place will make you think you are getting something good.

Hmm, I had the gyro dinner.  My lamb was not fresh.  I really look forward to having a heeping portion of lamb that's fresh on my plate. However, this wasn't the case this go around.  I think the guy cutting it was rather sleepy and wanted to be home.  He wasn't thinking about making a good first impression to a die-hard yelper!  LOL!

We get our food and sit down....Drum rolll please!  The food is not fresh and my fries are a tadbit more greasy than I like to eat them.  Hmmm, my friend stated that her sauce had too much white stuff (aka mayo for those mayo-nuts out there).

I noticed that this place doesnt have too many okay reviews.  However, Gabriel in the back possibly gave them a fresh gyro instead of the one that I had.

Still, this is okay joint to check out.  The food is relatively cheap and will make you full!

This just might be my favorite greasy spoon ever. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a sucker for good fast food. This place definitely quenches my cravings. From their title staple, the gyros to their burgers to their chili dogs to my personal favorite (and Chicago delicacy) the pizza puff, it's all good, fast and cheap. This place rarely does me wrong (and I've been eating here over ten years now... sheesh, I'm old!) and usually makes me happy with the artery clogging options they provide. To my door, no less! If that's not completely and totally full of win, I don't know what is!

I'm kinda stuck between 3 and 4 stars here. They deliver promptly, their menu is huge and cheap, the gyros are pretty solid and so is the tzatziki. It's super easy to get a couple of meals worth of food here for next to nothing (the gyros dinner is so big it's absurd). Having said that, the food's swimming in grease. That's not hyperbole, it's the truth. When you eat one of the delicious salty fries out of their box, some (the bottom ones) are actually wet with grease. Like it drips off of the fries...into a puddle that fills the bottom of the container. It's good food, just definitely not a place for a diet or a weak heart or stomach.

As a struggle to find a decent gyros in the middle of nowhere PA, I remember that it's been almost a year since I've had a gyro here...over two years since I had them once every other week (about as often as my grad school budget would allow).  But dreams of a reasonably priced gyro leaking grease into my paper bag on the way to my apartment a few blocks away keep coming back.  Are they the best gyros ever?  No.  Would you ever want to eat in?  I can't imagine so - the seats are uncomfortable for even waiting for you food, let alone staying.  But the food is good and the people are friendly...and they fit in a grad student budget.

Hate to be a downer here with just 3 stars but my wife forced me not to give it 4.    (Psst., it's a 3.9 okay?)    :)

To begin with, we walked here from a neighborhood on 55th.  (See photo)  Nice safe place.   And it's amazing to me to see the variance in a very old "safe" neighborhood, and this street.    A few street people...   Okay, well if the stock market doesn't improve, I might join them, but I think it's worth noting that this is a little "off track".   Not sure how to put that more nicely.

Yeah, it's a deli, and while the iced tea was fresh, they needed to clean the nozzle more as it was slightly bitter.

I had a Pastrami which was LOADED with meat.   So juicy that it made the white bread soggy (in a good way).     I was happy with it    In fact we just drove by there again and I exclaimed to my wife "there it is!".   (Locals call it the 5500 deli).    And she said that was not so special.

I think it was.   But I was damn hungry.      I didn't care about the folding tables and chairs, I wanted food.   As in "Give me sandwich".    And I got a great deal for $7.

Have a few coins in your pocket in case the street people give you that 'ol "Say man, can you spare some change?".

So hard to write a fair review on this, as I love the neighborhood on 55th, felt like I was walking into the outskirts of a ghetto when selecting here to eat.   I loved it, but my wife says "not so special".

I would say try it and draw your own conclusions.    3.9.  :)

this is not a place you get healthy food, I find it hilarious that they actually had a healthy selection on their takeout menu then later crossed them out.

But it's cheap, large portion and convenient.

I've only lived here for four days but after I picked up my gyro this morning, the lady behind the counter said "see you tomorrow!" That's how much I love Hyde Park Gyros.

While not the highest quality gyros I've ever had, they hit the right notes. They're cheap. They're quick. They're delicious. The staff is really friendly and even if you opt for extra fixins' you won't break the bank. Like other reviewers have mentioned, there is not a single healthy thing on the menu but I've been sticking with the chicken and standard gyros.

My main piece of feedback is that they should put more tomatoes in the gyros. The sauce and meat do the job well but they should highlight the other flavors in the gyro as well.

Hyde Park Gyros has some excellent low-cost high-quality greasy fast food.  It may look a little dingy, but the gyros, man, the gyros!  I like it, my only intermittently employed older brother liked it when he went, and even my young urban professional north-sider relatives were able to appreciate the wide selection (for a gyros / beef sandwich / hot dog / you-get-the-idea joint) and tasty but unhealthy food.

I try to bounce around the menu from time to time, but I just can't stay away from the gyros combo. One of my favorite (fast) meals in Hyde Park for $6.

The owners are friendly and the food's always on time. Give it a go.

Really cheap blue collar type gyro place. I'd say it's even one step above the typical gyro place because of the service. This place was a life saver when I wondered hyde park in search of a chilidog. Everything is good on the menu but no healtthy stuff. I suggest eating here sparringly if you care about stuff like that.

Good food, fast service, good prices.  Oh and I agree the furniture's mismatched and the place is falling apart but you don't really go here for the atmosphere.  Gyro's weren't the best but burgers are good, the fries are good and the pop is awesome.

I can't explain it, well I probably could, but some places have such good pop.  I'm sure it has to do with the amount of syrup or whatever, anyway...

Pretty much your typical gyros joint, good for a quick bite, but probably best to carry it out.

Edit: I had to give this place one more star since trying and re-trying their Gyros dinner, you get so much for such a good price.

Cheap and delicious, though greasy as hell - but what do expect from a gyros joint? Get a combo meal - a sandwich or pita with fries and a drink. They are all usually under 6 bucks. The gyros are good and the meat is plentiful. The burgers and dogs aren't bad either, and they don't skimp on the fixings. Somewhat unfortunately, my favorite meal is the $3.65 Two Hot Dog Special. Two dogs covered in what ever toppings you choose, a bag of delicious fries, and a soda - a BUNCH of food for the meager price.
