Stopped here for lunch on a drive from Boston to Wilkes-Barre. This place is excellent and located right off the highway! Â Our server was fantastic (and entertaining) and the food was great and cheap. I had a stack of 3 chocolate chip pancakes with a side of bacon and I left full and happy! Â The pancakes were fluffy and delicious and filling! Â I would totally dine here again!
Review Source:Classic. Average Food. Average Options.
This diner has that classic 1950's throwback feel, with lots of chrome and neon. The staff are sleepy and seem unhappy, and the food is about as average as you can get. If you're aching for some diner food, this will do just fine. If you a diner aficionado, you'll be a bit disappointed.
I'm from NJ, so I'm a bit of a snob about diners, especially those outside the Garden State. And I was skeptical about the I-84 because it's giant, and I tend to think smaller is better.
I'm delighted to report that I-84 is terrific. I brought a group of 12 in for lunch today and ALL of us enjoyed our meal. That's tricky. If you've read my other reviews, you know how picky I can be. I-84 nailed all of my weirdo requests, and did so with a smile. Food was good, fresh, quick and plentiful. Example: I asked for tomato to put on my grilled cheese and they brought three beautiful slices instead of some crappy mush.
Had a great lunch and a good time.
Two stars, "Meh, I've experienced better," kind of place. Â It's a 24-hour diner, which is a plus, but the food was bland, and much of it is overdone. Â The burgers are done okay, but when adding toppings such as cheese, they give so little, that you don't even know it exists. Â Same can be said of any sauced entree, besides what they add tomato sauce in. Â The Chicken Marsala had no Marsala sauce. Â When ordering from this place, just stick to the breakfast menu.
The service was pretty good. Â The waitresses are quite attentive, and are great with kids. Â They even gave kids in our party specialty cookies, the size of their faces, for free. Â The host was quite considerate of our party needs, and was quite patient in waiting for our party to gather up.
The restrooms need some work. Â Urine on the floor, unflushed manual toliets, anti-bacterial soap at thin as water that does not foam up. Â There are some restrooms that only have one stall, which can be an issue when catering for parties.
Only saving grace here is the service, and being open 24 hours.
I once spent an hour in the car driving down the Thruway at 90 miles an hour to get to the I-84 Diner-my friends REALLY wanted pie, and all the restaurants around were closed. It was a terrifying drive; most of it was spent contemplating if I would make it to the diner to eat my last meal on Earth. If the drive there didn't kill me, the drive back definitely would. This got me thinking about what I would get if my last meal on Earth turned out to be at the I-84 Diner. Pie seemed good but something more substantial seemed to be in order, something to remember. So I ordered a plate of onion rings, a bacon cheeseburger, drank 3 glasses of soda, and ordered a big slice of chocolate cream pie for dessert. What? I thought I was going to die, I might as well stuff my face beforehand! I would say it was a good meal, and if I had died afterwards I would have died happy. Kudos to the I-84 Diner for that!
Review Source:So, i'm from boston where "Greek Diner" doesn't translate to "weird ass place where a woman with 5 o'clock shadow and rotten teeth serves your crappy food at the most bizarre acid trip of gigantic imitation 50's diner in world"
but, that's just me.
not going back. i'm anti chain, but if i find myself back in this area in need of food and coffee i'll stick to s-bucks or dunks.
Like a shining silver beacon of deliciousness, the I-84 Diner beams onto the highway and beckons you in for 24 hours of solid gold eats. Â
This is the first place my business partner and I ate upon moving to town. Â Now we regularly come for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Â You can't beat the hours of operation, the breadth of the menu, and the grand scale of the whole establishment. Â This place is not kidding around, especially when it comes to desserts. Â The glass case in front would put a specialized bakery to shame, and everything is made on the premises.
Breakfast is served all day, along with basically everything you can think of. Â It's pointless to list it all. Â Alright, fine. There are steaks, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, fajitas, diet meals with fruit and cottage cheese, homestyle meals like meatloaf and turkey with gravy, Greek-inspired dishes, and everything in between. Â My favorite is the Eggs Benedict--served hot with a tasty Hollandaise sauce and thick slices of ham, plus a side of their classic home-fried potatoes, which never fail to please.
This place gets super-crowded on weekend mornings, but don't be discouraged from joining the rush. Â Service is usually very fast. Also, I've found the coffee to be surprisingly rich and delicious. Â This place is the modern mecca of diners. Â If for some reason you haven't been there yet, be sure to check it out soon. Â It's just a darn fun place to eat.
For the most part, Â I get a burger when we go here. I've gotten a few breakfasts, such as omelets or Belgian waffles, which are good. However, the burgers are pretty darn good and I'm continuously drawn to them. They are very consistent with their food.
We are usually seated very quickly. I'm not really a fan of how they're redoing their place. They are getting rid of booths and adding tables. To me, diners need booths! Other places are trying the be "diner-esque" yet it seems that they are trying to turn into more of a restaurant. Let's hope they don't go too far. Long live the diner!
For those interested, there's a pretty good car show every Thursday night.
This diner is not much different than most, however, it is very spacious and can accommodate a lot of people. The food is good and they have a reasonable amount of items to choose from. I've gone there all different times of the day and have never had to wait, nor have I experienced bad service. The servers are very friendly and attentive. You must check it out.
Review Source:After reading about this place and the positives on YELP I figured it's close to where I'm staying why not. Â
Well I will tell you why not: 1) the waitress was rude to the point that I wanted to smack her. Â 2) there was an item I did not order on my bill and when I told the waitress she argued with me about having it removed. Â 3) the pastrami sandwich I had was as dry as sandpaper and the onion rings were just nasty.
In one review it was noted that this place was good for kids, but I was the youngest person in the place the rest of the people were 65 or older.
Love this place. My family has been stopping here for years on the way to Phila. Nice way to break up the trip.
They have a menu as large as the Cheesecake Factory. They have food, baked goods AND liquor license. My faves are Matzo Ball Soup, Moussaka, and the spanikopita is the best I've ever had. Oh, the pastrami is amazing, too! :)
Stopped at this lovely dinner with David P., his brother and father as we made our way to New York City from Boston. While Fishkill isn't exactly on the way, this minor detour was necessary so we could meet with some of these guys's family and this diner was our meeting point. We parked in their large, private lot and within seconds after entering, were escorted to a table in the main dining room of the establishment.
It was mid-morning and we all decided to get some breakfast. While most dinners tend to be very greasy, I was surprised by the quality of the pancakes that I ordered. They were very tasty, perfectly cooked and very light and fluffy, despite being covered in slightly melted chocolate chips.
Everyone's breakfast was cleared within minutes with little conversation taking place as all five of us cleaned our plates up completely. Whether it was omelets, toast or whatever else we ordered, everything vanished and we were left full and completely satisfied. The prices of each item was affordable, especially considering the value and everything arrived promptly.
The service there was wonderful, friendly and efficient and their menu offers enough variety that everyone will be able to find something they need. My only issue with this awesome place is that there's nothing like it in Boston - No diner even comes close. Oh how I wish I was close to it.
Oh and did I mention that this spot is open 24/7? Holding my tears will be hard. Great spot, seriously. Oh and good luck trying to walk by their counter that's stuffed with delicious-looking baked goods. It looks heavenly and was hard to resist.
I am a huge fan of ethnic food of all types, shapes and sizes and whenever I have a craving for great spanikopita and pastichio, my onestop shop is the I-84 Diner! They usually have the Greek food sampler (the 2 aforementioned delicacies - make sure you ask for some tzaziki sauce on the side for the spanikopita - to die for!! + the moussaka) on their dinner specials which is very reasonable considering the soup or salad, dinner + drink deal they have. The other food averages in price range (some of their appetizers and burgers are overpriced) but everything tastes pretty good. The desserts always look so great and taste as good as they look. The staff is very courteous and helpful - it's a fun place to go with a very strong 'diner' feel to it. You won't regret stopping here - especially for their greek delicacies!!
Review Source:Lovelovelovelove this place, which my fiance and I discovered because we were making the 1000 mile trek from Home to College, and we were starving and saw a sign from the highway and figured what the hell. Â Oh.
Yummiest, hugest, French dip sandwich I've ever had. Â Fiance loved his Reuben similarly. Â Perfect, perfect fries. Â Yummy, giant slice of cheesecake for desert even though we barely could finish half of our sandwiches. Â
The only way this could be better would be if it had more typical cheap diner prices. Â It's a bit more than I was hoping, but SO good and HUGE portions; that sandwich served as lunch and dinner and dessert served as dessert twice and *then* breakfast the next morning.
If you really just need to eat and get back on the road, it's fine. However, it took me a long time to decide what to order because of the 59392838493845 things on the menu, very few bordered on appealing.
On the plus side, even in the busy Thanksgiving rush, the staff was friendly and the food came out quickly and hot.
LOVE this place - wow. Â I was sooo happy when we went to breakfast here Thanksgiving morning. Â Seeing things like pastrami and corned beef hash on a restaurant make me miss home and it was a nice change from the greasy Southern places down here in the ATL. Â
The staff was decent, our waitress was a tad off her rocker but our food was right on. Â
My pastrami & eggs breakfast was awesome. Â My boyfriend's french toast, he said, was not the great. Â The kids' loved their food though and I was very satisfied with this place!
This place was great! The whole experience was right on!. Great environment and atmosphere. Â The place is very nice with shiny decor and the Wife says the ladies bathroom was very clean. We had the sampler plate - bacon, eggs, sausages, french toast and a pancake. The food was nicely plated and tasted just as good. I will be back there! I don't understand the bad reviews of this place, guess you just can't please those that hate the world :-/
Review Source:I have frequented the diner for breakfast fare and found it quite good...so you ask about the 2* rating?
Stopped by after a long ride for a qwik bite and opted for a nice tuna sammie ...yuch, yuch and more yuch.
The wedgie bread (and I had asked for whole wheat of which they were out) was stale. The tuna dressing ran off the bread in an appeared effort to spread the love. BIG mistake! Instead of greasy fries I selected some pickled beets and they were sooooooo vinegary that my tongue was begging for another option!
Must say the iced tea was a nice brew and our waitress was very sweet....so what have we learned? Stick to BF for this diner!
A great 24-hr, 50's style diner to stumble upon in upstate New York. Great atmosphere. We rolled in as a 6 piece gang around 2am and the waitress was very nice and the kitchen was very fast. I got the salmon eggs benedict which was very tasty. Nice hollandaise sauce. I can't remember what everyone else got, the night is a little blurry if you know what I mean. But I do remember that everyone like their food and we had a good time. But the homefries were just ok if I remember correctly.
Review Source:My current go-to diner (it's about 3 minutes from my home). I've actually been coming here for many years, and it's always been a good, reliable place for a meal. They do my usual diner preferences (burgers, fries, chicken fingers, corn beef sandwich, and breakfast) perfectly. Plus, the homemade cakes and pies are incredible. Plus PLUS, it's 24 hours, and there's always big rigs in the parking lot, so 10-4, Rubber Ducky.
Review Source:There's not much you can say about the 84 Diner that hasn't already been said. It's a diner, a straight up diner with a straight up menu. Â I like me some burgers and fries and I'm never disappointed. Â Personally, it's saved me from a few nights of getting a quick and easy meal. Â I've always had great service every time I go. Â Â If you want to take dessert to go, get the carrot cake. Â For my birthday, I made a pit stop (before a snow storm came) and got me just a slice of the cake to go. Â I had it later that night and it was still very moist. Â Thumbs up 84!
Review Source:ehh... Not a fan of the Diner. Â I gave this place a couple of chances but I must say, the food portions are big but the taste is very generic made with copied generic ingrediants.
The one thing that lured me was the cakes so I got a slice of red velvet... but never again will I be fooled.
Sorry but if I really really needed breakfast and I had absolutely no choice, then I'd go there, but other than that, I rather cook my own  pancakes, home fries, and turkey bacon and get better results, despite my getting by skills
the Best Greek Diner in New York Bar None.
The experience of the 84 diner is one of unabashed diner goodness.
the experience begins with the neverending crowds. Every time i go in to the 84 Diner it is crowded but never so crowded that there is a wait.
The experience continues with the service. The service is just what you would  expect from the best diners: slow and attentive
The experience ends with the food. Portions are ginormous and the quality is good. The desserts are to die for and the coffee is great
A diner for the masses. And the masses do come to the 84 Diner
Sensorary overload when you walk in the door, but it is going to be ok- better than ok. Neon, people and food oh my! The I-84 Diner is a well oiled machine. No matter what time of day or item you order, the service is fast and efficient. Large parties are handled with ease, and every modification to your order can be done without hassle. How can you not love a place where you can eat meatloaf for breakfast and pancakes for dinner??
Review Source:Known more as being a well known truck stop than a diner, 84 diner is a common pit stop for truckers traveling 84, which is pretty much the north east arterial and the gateway to New England from New York. It must be pretty good though because it is not an easy task for a trucker to navigate from 84 to the diners location which is located right next to the ramp. In any case the food is from average to good for a diner and the menu seems endless. Parking is easy and the diner has secured the location as a night stop by building a new three story hotel directly behind it which should be opening sometime this summer or early fall.
The Sum Up: Although the food is only average to good, the menu is endless so there is something you will find. Come visit this upstate NY icon of a diner and truck stop to get a decent meal while your traveling 84.
I have eaten here more times than I can count. It's the BEST Greek diner anywhere! They have just about anything you can imagine and you can get everything pretty much 24/7. Their cream of mushroom soup is the best I have ever tasted and their strawberry cheesecake slices are so big and rich you could make a meal out of them!
I will say I'm not a fan of the decor. They remodeled YEARS ago and I have never gotten over the feeling that it lost some of its charm. But this is the best place to go when you are looking for a casual place to enjoy good food with a group of friends because they can accommodate larger parties and have something for everyone's tastebuds and budget. And the quality is always consistent.
The i84 diner is quintessential upstate New York Americana. Â Greek-owned, like every good upstate diner is, the menu has everything. Don't bother opening it, just picture what you want to eat. Â Now, don't go crazy. Thought of something? Good.
The i84 has classic appetizers, any breakfast dish under the sun, sandwiches, wraps, burgers, gyros, paninis, salads, pasta, fajitas, comfort food, steaks, seafood, and desserts desserts desserts!
i84 is a mecca for the bored high school student, the drunk college student, and truckers. Â Fish tanks line the walls, and it's three large rooms accommodate quiet dates and huge parties. The waitresses are classic no-nonsense women who chew gum, talk horoscopes, and never mess up an order. Ever.
If you go, be sure to buy an i84 trucker hat. And tell them I said hi.
