I always have a great time at Jackhammer! The main floor includes two bars and a dance area, to the casual observer it would appear that Jackhammer is just your average gay bar...but if you head downstairs you're in for a surprise. The lower lever (the hole) is basically a backroom. On weekends there is generally a dress code, however you can usually strip down to your briefs and that's also acceptable.

Came here on an adventurous (drunken) Saturday night, and enjoyed myself here, but wasn't really my scene. I was surprised it wasn't too busy, but it at least had more people and diversity than their neighbor Touche next door. They had a live performer doing some guitar ballads... which is kind of a party killer so the main room emptied out.

I explored the infamous "Hole" downstairs. I guess we were there early because it wasn't too busy and they even let us in without taking out shirts off. I could tell it gets raunchy down there though.

Anyway, I'd come back if a friend wanted to explore, but the farthest north I'd go on my own would be Big Chicks.

I like this place because it attracts a refreshingly diverse crowd compared to all of the people you run into in Boystown.  They host various events throughout the week and the weekends I usually like to stop in for a drink or 10.  The bartenders have always been friendly and nice.

Never really done it, but I imagine it is a good chill place to visit during the week if you are meeting friends for a quick drink & to catch up.

On the weekends if you are feeling bold and adventurous you can check out "The Hole", in the basement space of the club.  It is a private club space, so if you have leather, you can walk in as is.  Otherwise you must strip down to your underwear, OR you can just take off your shirt if you have descent sized upper body tattoos.

Even though this is a review for Jackhammer, it is kind of hard to leave out the fact that there is a leather & fetish type store next door if that tickles your fancy, as well as Touche, a darker and more raunchy bar/club worth checking out.

My boyfriend and I love going to this place, and while we are usually tipsy by then, so is everyone else :-) The vibe is friendly, and people are upfront!

Since the change in hours and bartenders this bar have severely gone down hill. My bestie and I used to enjoy this place tremendously on Thursdays for dollar beer night, but the clientele has become so "ghetto" that it is no longer fun! I am never going back from 5-10pm. If my experience is the same post 10p then it will be permanently banned by us! Now the Glenwood is the place to go for fun, beats this place hands down!

Once again a frustrating, disappointing way visit up north to the Jackhammer.
I've been going out to the leather bars since before this bar existed.
I might have had a good time, were it not for the staff/employees and their attitudes.
Can there be any excuse for shouting that customers need to leave, a full hour before last call?
Can there be any reason for arbitrarily enforcing a dress code that only exists in the head of the staff member who decides who can go downstairs & who can't? If you post a sign with your dress code requirements, you need to enforce what it says, and not leave it up to one person's whim.
What is the reason for opening and closing various spaces on the lower level at arbitrary times? Customers have no way to know when they can go where or for which reason. Customers cannot plan their evenings or know whether they are OK with the staff or in jeapordy of being screamed at for violating unposted, unannounced, unmotivated, and nonsensical requirements.
I enjoy being around people who wear leather. I don't enjoy or apreaciate being abused and mistreated by bar employees whose job should be to ensure that paying customers should enjoy their evening.
You tell me why I should ever go back there again.

To be honest, I was very pleasantly surprised about the Jackhammer.  Of course, most people have heard of the Hole downstairs and that can be a little intimidating when first walking in.  I'm not going to review that section of the bar since I have never been, nor do I really have any interest.  And the great part of the bar is that you can have a fun evening without going down there or feeling pressured to go down.  The upstairs is very clean and with plenty of space minus an awkwardly placed dance floor (right by the entrance).  Much different clientele from that of Boystown as well.  You will get a much larger bear population at Jackhammer.  But you will also get locals from the neighborhood in Rogers Park.

This place is wild. Wild, untamed and unashamed. It's also clean, with a well done interior. Filled with hot (albeit, gay) men. There's a lot for a straight girl to look at here as well.

As long as you're not with a screamy, annoying bachelorette party - which, I was not. No one is happy to see the idiot Trixies in places like this.

The bartenders are charming and adorable. Never too busy for a smile, even when working at lightning speed.

There's a secret, special bar downtstairs called The Hole that has a dress code of sorts. Leather, fetish or nudity. Ladies you will be asked to remove your shirt. Wear a cute, black lace bra . . . if you dare to descend into the Hole.

Otherwise, I stay upstairs to drink, dance and dish with my fabulous gay brothers in Andersonville and around. This place is friendly to women, as long as you're not an idiot, as mentioned above.

    Which . . . I am not. :-)

Was thrown out of this bar couple of weeks ago because a drunk dude knocked a just bought drink out of my hand. I turned to the bartender and told him what happened, he poured me another drink and then was going to charge me. I asked him why he was charging me and with that he told the hefty lady i had to go, WTF? No biggie though..I was sort of dragged there. Bartender was an ass...and i went home and got a good nights sleep! Besides the bathrooms are dirty.....

Home of my favorite bartender in the city. Danny is a delight and really gives the place a "locals" feel even when it's slamming busy. The drinks are good and there are always interesting people to meet. Worth checking out earlier in the evening, not just late at night. Jackhammer is my Cheers.

This is my go-to gay bar. It helps that it's in the hood, but I'd go anyway.
It has a nice vibe, unlike the BT bars. It is mostly bear-ish, but you'll see a little of everything here.
There's the Hole downstairs for the backroom types. Just to get that out of the way. Hehe
The only complaint/suggestion I have is the area where people dance is extremely awkward. Being right in front, you have to walk through it to get any where else. I think I would put it upstairs, but then you'd lose the pool tables, so I guess it's where they had to put it.
Great place though! Bartenders are approachable & friendly. Door staff is kind of gruff, but not intentionally rude. PS: She's straight.

Fun looking sprawling gay bar in Rogers Park.  I can't really review Jackhammer itself as mostly I head towards The Hole downstairs, a tiny Leather bar with ambience oozing out of it's pores like the sweat on a boy being worked over on a St Andrew's cross.

Oh yeah:  I love this place!

I first visited Jackhammer a few years back when somebody told me that the only bars in Chicago worth visiting were this one and the next door legend, Touche.

The Jackhammer has a little something for everybody.  When you first walk in, you're walking right into the middle of the dance floor.  If you're a twink and showing up with one of your fag hags, stay on the main floor or head upstairs for a good "stand and pose" bar experience.

Now, if you're there for impure reasons (like me), then immediately skip the hype and head for the back stairs -- go down to the Hole, boy!  That's where the REAL fun is.

At the bottom of the stairs you'll be met with another bouncer who's gonna make sure that 1) you have a penis (sorry ladies), 2) you take your shirt off (before 9) or have leather on (after 9) or take your pants off (after 9), and 3) that you're not a giggly little cologne wearing kid -- and if you are you'll get a lecture on how your behavior is "disruptive".

You see, the Hole has a full bar downstairs.  There's also a bathtub there.  Yes, that's right, a bathtub.  Can you guess what happens there?  Wanna find out?

Also, the Hole has a back room/hallway where men go to, um, play.  And I ain't talkin' darts or pool, either.  :)

I have mixed feelings about the 'Hammer.

On one hand, there's usually great guys here, the bartenders are nice, and the hole can be fun if you're in the sort of mood to indulge in such activities... or just watch.

On the other hand, there's some seriously negative juju under the earth up at the 6400 block of Clark. From all the stories I've heard, to my own personal experiences I feel like the entire stretch of land from Devon up to the police station is an Indian burial ground.

No, I've never seen poltergeists here, but it certainly feels like something is just, just... ...off for lack of words.

The one thing that I truly don't like about JH though is the awkward layout. They play good music, have a decent stereo - but they shove the dance floor to the front, and have huge glass windows which ruins the intimacy. Plus, since you have to walk through the dance floor to either go upstairs or down into the depths of the hole, you have to walk through anyone who just wanted to shake their booty, leading to less booty shaking.

Ultimately, hardcore patrons of JH are only there for the Hole, which is fine. It is just a missed opportunity to be great place for both the seedy and the prudish alike.

jack hammer is fun! I really like the bar staff and door people, extremely friendly with great music and cheap drink specials, unfortunately its pretty far north and i dont like to take the bus or cta to get there and then drink and have to take an expensive cab ride home. I will go back though for some of the great events they put on.

Great Bar.  Tammi is AWESOME.  She works the front  door and is always happy to see you in her special way.  She will watch your drink for you when you run out for a smoke break.  I love it when she wears her police hat.

So... I might regret saying this... but I think Jackhammer is on my top five list of gay bars in Chicago.

Now, mind you... I was never there before the upstairs opened. I have only been there on a Saturday ONCE. We participate in the dart league that has two teams out the bar... which means my experiences are mostly $1 Thursdays.

I know, I know... $1 beers attract $1 clientele. But when you're there for dart night and you're used to paying $4-$7 for a beer throwing in the league, $1 beers are a refreshing change of pace.

The bartenders are always SUPER sweet. I'm such a sucker for a hot dude calling me "baby" or "beautiful". Giggle. Blush.

I think my favorite experience here was on a Saturday night when we were here with my Uncle and his partner. As we were leaving (having spent our time on the second floor where they show sports and videos), we had to walk by all the TVs playing porn... and my uncle grabbed me and covered my eyes so I couldn't see it.

He thinks I'm so sweet and innocent...

    Sweet! Well more like ROUGH!

I really enjoyed this bar, I've heard about it but never ventured out to the area. Last week a bunch of friends decided to try a new scene  (more of a leather type scene) other than the usual B-town scene. Yeah, they charge a $5 cover but you get a ticket for a free drink which makes up for the cover charge. The music is great and the bar is super spacious.

Yeah, they have "The Hole" downstairs, can't really comment because I didn't venture down there but maybe one day...heeheehee

Okay, maybe my first experience wasn't the best but I have this to say about Jackhammer.

I got stink eye for kissing a boy on the dance floor

    I stepped in puke

I had to pay a cover

    Yeah, end of story.

Still like it, but liked it better before the renovations, I guess (when it was kinda scuzzier).  Now, I sometimes feel like it's trying to be too many things to too many people (downstairs bar w/sorta-leather theme, half-assed dance floor--you have to walk through it to get upstairs--w/DJ, pool tables, strange theme nights).  Kind of odd layout and absolutely-no-privacy bathrooms w/uplit urinals.  I guess it works, because they're generally pretty busy.  Generally nice bartenders, crowd can vary greatly (twinks, leather, older, some college-types), but they're open til 4, prices are reasonable and there's a smallish parking lot across the street (DO NOT park in the lot to the left of the hardware store, you'll be towed).

This review is for The Hole, the seedy bar-in-a-bar occupying Jackhammer's basement.

As someone "in the lifestyle" who prefers quality over quantity and doesn't "play" in bars, sleazy places tend toward less comfortable and pressured encounters. However, while The Hole certainly offers the opportunity for casual vice, I felt very comfortable. The bartender was a bit snippy, but the clientele was welcoming and gregarious.

There's not much of a crowd here until 11:30 or so. Others mention the strict dress code: gear or shirtless men only. Tattoos help.

The crowd was a mix of muscle men, bears, slim and average bodies, covering all age groups but tending toward early 30s to mid 40s--still with a fair number of 20-somethings like myself and a spattering of older men.

They pour heavier here than at Touché next door, but prices are a tad higher, too, particularly for called liquor.

I am not really qualified to assign a star rating to Jackhammer. You see, there is nothing leather about me. I wouldn't even presume to try. But as an experiential collector, this provided an enjoyable escape from the 'mos down in the hood.

The music isn't fantastic, but the place is tidy and there is an adjacent leather shop. I do love commerce!

The leather daddies are all welcoming, and indeed pleased to see non-leather types checking out the scene. Should you decide to stick around and strap on a harness all the better. But that is an individual decision left to the individual. Let me tell you, while others say the leather daddies are not fashion conscious, i beg to differ. These blokes drop some serious coin on their wares. Do you think custom made leather wear is inexpensive.

As for the evening, there was a performance by some Sheena the Warrior Goddess woman. I saw some things I don't believe I've seen before, but that was the purpose of the evening. I didn't check out the downstairs bar- it was closed for a special event (a bar mitzvah??)- so I can't opine on that.

In short an enjoyable experience for the collection.

This bar is going downhill. It used to be fun when it first remodeled but it is starting to get too dirty and it seems like a lot of people there are on drugs. We went on a Saturday night for the monthly underwear contest and it wasn't even crowded. It used to be packed with people dancing for these parties but now the crowd is alot smaller. They don't have the normal DJ working on that Saturday night anymore and the music isn't as good. Staff downstairs is friendly in the hole. Worst thing about this place is if there are people dancing you have to walk through the middle of the dance floor to get to the upstairs or downstairs bars or the bathrooms. Weeknights are ok, same people all the time and it seems they got rid of the DJ's during the week so the music is kind of boring. Guess we will just go to Charlies from now on.

I had a really strange experience here in the downstairs bar. Look for it. I did, but only because my friend asked me to meet him down there one day. In "The Hole," as it's known, you either have to wear leather (and not just a leather bracelet, which I was wearing) or take off your shirt. That's just during the week. Weekends, I believe it's underwear only, so beware!

Boobs or no boobs, you gotta take off your shirt if you don't have the required amount of leather on. Oh, and I don't have boobs, but a girl who was hanging with my friend did have boobs. Luckily, she draped her long hair over them. She didn't seem at all uncomfortable with it and her boobs were nice to look at, so I suppose it wasn't too strange.

But there IS a cage down there... AND you can get into it. I didn't climb in, but I saw someone get in, and I saw him do things to people while he was in it. Or maybe I should say I saw people do things to him while he was in there.

    Yeah. That WAS strange.

The upstairs is clean and modern. They play bad gay music, but there are very few gay bars with good music, so that's neither here nor there.

I'm definitely not knocking it. If you live up that far north, I guess it's nice to have something like that around. If you don't live up there, you'd probably only go to Jackhammer if you're in the area and don't want to schlep to some other place further south, or if a friend makes you go.

Good mix of people but I would think Jackhammer is geared towards the older crowd.  I did pay a cover but they gave me a ticket for a $5 drink.  The place was clean and modern and the bar tenders weren't to bad.  I'm not sure what is up with the bathrooms as they are way out in the open with lights shining on the urinals.  Definably designed by a gay person.  This bar gets busier later at night and is open very late.   You may find people here more promiscuous than normal.  Techno music is played here as well.

This was part of my adventure with my friends Renny and Robert.

After having already gone to Mary's Attic, Atmosphere, Marty's, and back to Atmosphere again...we chatted to some gays in the bar.

At which point, my friend Renny lifted my shirt and asked the bar tender if he would have sex with me.  While I was startled, I was strangely thrilled by the new found freedom alcohol provided me.

The bar tender supposed he would, and invited us to the Jackhammer.  I was like 'What? I am not going to a bar named after a power tool used to rip up streets....imagine what they could do to my back alley' ...despite my protests, we went.

I was super jazzed that my cover charge was returned to me in the form of a drink voucher.  I bought beer! Yeah me!

Then the bar tender from the other bar found me.  And then he decided it would be a great idea to tongue kiss me in front of my friends.  Which was hot, but decidedly dirty and out of character for me.  I was forced to order another beer to wash the taste of hot blond guy out of my mouth.

I ended up talking to so many people that night, including an 'otter'  I never heard of that before.  Here's a lesson in homo-ness:

Big hairy guys who wear leather: Bears
Skinny hairy guys who wear leather: Otters
Skinny boys with no chest hair, and usually barely legal: twinks
Skinny boys with no chest hair who wear vintage t's and ripped jeans: hot

Anyway, after my conversations with many boys....we decided to go next door to Touche...which is a whole nother story.

I will say the bar was clean, had a very fun vibe, a great mix of a crowd (though a little bear/otter heavy), played good music, and the bar tenders are some of the friendliest I've ever encountered.

I'd actually suggest checking it out, it isn't as scary as the name!

Lots of types of guys here, but definitely leaning towards bears and leather guys. I had a good time despite not being in the scene. The bartenders were pretty nice and hot. I know the Hole was open, but I didn't check it out.
I'll definitely go back if I'm not feeling Boystown.

I finally made my first visit to the Jackhammer this weekend and I have to say I was kind of impressed. The decor is sort of cliche modern gay bar, which is totally dullsville, but the bartenders and crowd were great. I love the fact the crowd is so mixed, there really was someone for everybody and it seemed pretty attitude free. Bears, leather guys, twinks, hipster gays, which you don't really see at other Chicago gay bars. It was a total meat market, but in a fun way. I was there around 11:30 on a Saturday night and it was jumpin jumpin, but the bar is huge so there was plenty of room to spread out.

I also loved the fact they played hardcore porn at the front of the bar. I even owned the video that was playing (shut up!) which was kind of funny. If you don't like it, don't go. It's a gay bar, specifically catering to GAY MEN, many of whom are looking to get laid. When I was there, the ratio of men to women was about 50:1. No one seemed to have a problem with the women that were there, but it seems sort of dude focused, so if you want to drink Appletinis with your girlfriends, stick to Boystown.

The basement leather bar, The Hole, is also great if you're into that scene. I didn't see anything totally scandalous happening while I was down there but they definitely have all the accouterments (public urinals, ha!) for when things get rowdy. I got kicked out for not wearing leather (which I kind of expected) but the bartender was super nice about it, unlike the Eagle.

Overall I have to say this could be my new favorite gay bar in Chicago. Next time I'll remember to wear my chaps.

its a fun place to go once in a while.   I like this place.   5 dollars to get in and a 5 dollar drink ticket!!  WOOHOO!  The guy at the back bar was a sweetie and attached to it is a toy store.   Wow the more I think about this place...the more I like it.   My roommate dragged me there for his bday on sat.   It even comes with its own palm reader....(im not gonna be married and I have a project that i need to stop).   :)   Enjoy!!  (Small dance floor but noone plays the darts in back!!)

I agree that this is the one place where all the different crowds and age groups seem to mix without inflicting any discomfort on each other.  Everyone is just there to have a good time.  I'm not sure why they bother with the miniscule dance floor, but they do play good music.  Never saw the place before the redo, but if anything it might be a little too nice for a place called Jackhammer.  Yes, they're playing hardcore porn, so if that bugs you, don't go.  It's that easy.  There are no privacy dividers in the bathrooms, which resulted in me seeing something I never needed to see when a girl came in to use the men's bathroom.  Use your imaginations.  This is actually a good place to bring understanding straight girlfriends who can avert their eyes from and avoid bitching about gay porn in a GAY BAR.  However, I don't understand why guys would try to take these girlfriends into "The Hole", which is clearly designated as a men-only, dress-code section of the bar.  Anyway, it's totally fun and worth the trip out of Lakeview for a change of pace and scenery.

I don't really get this place. A weird mix of gay subcultures.  It could be chic if it weren't still a dump...if that makes sense.  The "Hole" was fun at the beginning... now it is guys who are too old for Roscoe's standing in jockstraps, looking nervous.  I brought a girl downstairs once, and I thought those queens were gonna scream like teenage girls who had just had their lockeroom invaded..

I went through a period of mourning when the Jackhammer transformed from "cozy gay dive bar" to what it is now, which is a not-as-cozy and not-so-divey bar.  Now it looks like a dance club.  The clientele is pretty much the same, but I've noticed a lot of younger people coming in.

So, the mourning is over and I've accepted the fact that the Jack is not the same as it used to be.  The old Jack is now relegated to nostalgia.

Generally I only come on Tuesday nights for Creaoke karaoke, which goes on until 4 am.  It's always a lot of fun, and the bartenders are a friendly lot.

And yes, there's gay porn playing on the TV's, but it's a gay bar called THE JACKHAMMER, with a new bar in the basement called THE HOLE, which has a dress code and is supposed to be very sleazy.  I only went down there once and was turned away the second time because I wasn't wearing leather or a jockstrap or a leather jockstrap.

Yes Jackhammer is dark & loud, and there is indeed hardcore gay porn playing on a huge screen above the front bar, but it's also my favorite bar in the city. It's an extremely friendly, relaxed atmosphere without the attitude and more importantly the packs of drunk straight girls that act like they are at a zoo, of boystown. There is also a basement bar "The Hole" but its pretty much only guys and there is a dress code.

I went to the Jackhammer to see a band play. I didn't really know what it was going to be like until I got there. I will be honest and say that I didn't really care for the extremely graphic porn on the television but that was fine because I just didn't look at it.

I am a straight female and didn't feel at all alienated here. There was a lot of leather-clad bodies. The bartenders were nice, the patrons were all extremely friendly and I especially liked Barbie the hostess.

Gay bars aren't really my thing but I would definitely consider stopping in again if the occasion came up.

In the past year, this bar went through a major remodeling, and transformed from a dive bar catering to bears and leathermen to a cute neighborhood bar catering to bears and leathermen. It's a lot brighter and cleaner now, with wall-length windows that look out onto Clark Street, an upstairs bar and dance floor, and a small back deck. In addition to the requisite male dancers and amateur strip nights, Jackhammer now hosts live music and other events. The clientele is still gay, but the bar now attracts a wider variety of gays and some straight folks. Be aware that the back bar on the main floor is still not safe for casual viewing, and the men's room -- while all clean and shiny, with new fixtures -- lacks any dividers between urinals -- or what would normally be stalls. So if you don't want guys checking out your material while you pee -- or worse -- you'd better hold it.

The Jackhammer hosts a queer/queer friendly Flesh Hungry Dog Rock show every month which features 3 very cool bands of various styles (usually modern), and burlesque and comedy acts, that always draws in a eclectic crowd. It's like a punk rock variety show from the golden age of television. The founder of the show, Gary Airedale always books cool acts. <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fleshhungrydog.com%2Findex.html&s=bb3f356664106e68bf4d784e07a83a91348ded6d7d0170deec8efccddc9da316" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.fleshhungrydo…</a>

I went to The Jackhammer last summer to see my boyfriend's band, The Flying Aarons, play in The Flesh Hungry Dog show. While none of the members of his band are gay (and probably very few of the groupies that came to see them play that night), it was still a fun experience. The Flesh Hungry Dog show is a sweet  variety show that transcends any sexual orientation lines. They had some great bands the night I ventured to the Jackhammer---definately worth going to this bar for TFHD show, alone.

The Jackhammer, itself, is a kind of a neat, divey-ish bar, but I did definitely feel out of place being 1 of about 5 straight girls in the bar. If you're straight or a female, I don't know if I would recommend going to it on a night when there is no live music. It's not that it's a "questionable" bar or anything, but obviously the clientele is going to be gay men. You just might feel oddly out of place.....especially when gay porn is being blasted on every tv. But if I were gay, I'd be here every night of the week. There is some major beef in the house.
