Another place I've been coming to off an on for longer than I care to remember.  It used to always be good.  Haven't been in a yr or more, so when we decided on this place for Easter with a large group I was looking forward to it.

But I was disappointed.  Not so much by the food, but rather the service.  Our waitress seemed put out frm the moment we sat down.  There were 12 of us, so not a huge table, but everything semed overwhelming to her.  She forgot stuff, seemed snide and terse if not a bit rude when asked questions (like, "we thought the kids meal came with drinks?  to which she replied "you have to ask.")  HUH?  You can't ask for us?

2 people order the NY strip, mine was ordered charred, of course she gave me the wrong steak.  I had to ASK her about it.  Mistakes abound.  And BOY did she try to rush us!  She was making us nervous, she  was in such a hurry to get rid of us.

We had separate checks but she got a nice tip - from us at least - since it was Easter.  No more Johnny's, not with help like that.  Too many good places around, with better service.  They need to clean house with the staff.

One more thng:  I've been there on several holidays, it was usually packed.  Easter was quiet there!  I think their business is down.  That may be why they have social-coupon deals on the internet.  They need to fix their service, maybe business will return.  All the coupons in the world can't make up for aloof service.

Won't say never, but won't be back any time soon at all.

    Service: 1.5
    food: 3.5

2 friends and I headed here after work one day to grab dinner and catch up. Overall, the food was OK, it was a bit overpriced, and there wasn't much of an atmosphere.

I had the quarter (all white meat) BBQ chicken with soup and fries. The chicken was cooked well, and the fries were good, but there was nothing that special about it. The meal cost $10.95.

It was really dark and dim in the restaurant. I was kind of surprised when we were seated at our table just how dark it was.

Our waitress was very nice, and checked on us often. We split a bottle of wine among the three of us (I think it was $26 for a pinot grigio), and she was very attentive in topping off our glasses.

We didn't feel rushed at all, which we appreciated, as we were there for a while.

I would go back if my friends wanted to (they've been here many times and really like the place), but I would not pick to come here on my own.

Good food, but expensive for what it is.  Judging from the outside, I expected more of a "diner" atmosphere, but decor was somewhat classy -- although the tables did seem rather crowded together.  Our party of 4 enjoyed the steaks (tender, cooked as requested, but could be more flavorful...), but the chicken brochette, although tasty, wasn't very filling (not much chicken). Soups were good, but couldn't find the barley in the turkey barley soup...

An enjoyable meal, but don't think I will be a "regular".  For the money, I expect a little better.

How can anyone eat an entire portion here? They're HUGE! I was taken here because I am new to the area and also - I work in the area every now and then and a group of us went here. When we pulled up to the restaurant I didn't see anything phenomenal about the place. The first thing I thought was that this place didn't seem to be anything special and from the outside I was thinking this place looked as it was struggling. Yes, I don't judge some books by its cover so I went inside and found this place to be the high point of Glenview/Wheeling area. Place was damn near packed and me and a few got a drink at the bar.

After the rest of our party got there we were seated and had a very friendly server who loved that all of us were ready for Round X. We decided to get appetizers which was a bad idea. Don't get me wrong the appetizers were great its just I didn't know they were so LARGE. I looked at someone at my party and wondered why I got dinner.  I got roasted vegetables and grilled chicken and it was fantastic. I knew there was no way I was going to work this food off so I sat back - defeated. Food won. I definitely wouldn't mind going back to this place again seeing as I'll be in the area for a few more weeks. I enjoyed my time.

    Watch your credit card!
I ordered a hamburger to "take out" and when I reviewed my credit card bill the charged amount was higher.
I called the manager and after having to making several calls was told the extra amount was a tip which I NEVER left.
I do not tip for carry out.
The manger said he would send me the money which he never did.
This guy said hes been there for six years but acted like a kid.
I hope the owner Mary knows whats going on there.

By the way the hamburger was almost $16.00!

The local who recommended this establishment as a gourmet dining experience must surely also find utter delight in the culinary delicacies found at White Castle.

This place is a dump!  The service was terrible, the decor was old, the food was laughable at best.  You would do better to get a slice of pie at the pizza joint across the parking lot, then head into Baskin Robbins next door for dessert.

The cold stuffed mushrooms and slimy, tepid calimari were obviously from a package.  The mashed potatoes we heard so much about were reconstituted flakes.  The chop combo was overcooked, the chicken breasts the same.  No good vegetarian dishes offered.

Excellent! Was not sure what to expect at 9pm on a Sunday night, but I trusted Yelp and I'm glad I did! The wood-roasted meats seem to be the specialty, they are a great deal and they are delicious. I had the pork, which came with stuffing, gravy, applesauce and mashed potatoes. When it came to the table, I died a little. It was awesome. My BF got the chicken, which was great, but did not come with gravy. I highly recommend a side of gravy, as it is totally delicious (is that a hint of cinnamon?) and does wonderful things for the mashed potatoes.

Both dishes came with soup or salad. The cream of chicken was some of the best that I've ever had - the flavor was so much more deep and rich than I expected. Big chunks of chicken and some rice. Mmmm. I would go back just for this.

Bread basket was warm, service was attentive and friendly - this place is a gem. Next time I'm in the burbs for dinner, I will be visiting again!!

Nice neighborhood place with steak, chicken, ribs, fish dishes.  Nothing outstanding, but solid, reliable food at a family owned (non-chain) restaurant that's been in Glenview for many years.  Baked Onion Soup is good.  And I've never had a bad burger or steak either. There's a large bar too. Sinatra/Tony Bennett/Bobby Darin-type music over the ceiling speakers...attracts an "older crowd", but some families too.  The waiters are friendly and efficient. For me, it's not the kind of place I would go to on a regular basis, but it is a reliable choice in the neighborhood if I'm tired of fast food, or the more expensive places in the area.

I thought the food was tasty, but the service was slow.  Both the initial visit to the table and each later visit was just slow enough that I was wondering if we had been forgotten.  I had kids with me, which made it extra painful.

I had to ask for rolls to keep the troops from open rebellion.

Prices were pretty typical for the area, definitely not bargain basement, but not astronomical.

Room is dark, not too noisy.  We had a lousy table by the wait station, which made the poor service all the more surprising.

I work down the street from this place and I am always beyond satisfied with both the service and the food is so satisfying! There are a ton of places to eat around this area and this is by far the best.

Yelp led me to Johnny's, and I was most definitely impressed!  To be honest, I probably would have overlooked this restaurant as a generic family dining establishment had it not been for the reviews I read.

From the moment I walked through the door, it was all starting to dawn on me....this is going to be good.  We sat at the bar with a direct line of site to the wood burning rotisserie.  We started out with an order of the calamar, which was perfectly breaded and fried.  For our meals, my wife chose the Rotisserie Roasted Pork, and I chose the Club House Sandwich.  Wow!  Both were spectacular!  The pork was moist and absolutely delicious.  The real mashed potatoes were excellent as was the gravy.  The stuffing that comes with the pork is unreal!  The Club was also perfectly done!  The house roasted turkey made all the different.

Our server was very friendly and efficient.  She mentioned that they make almost everything in house, including the salad dressings.  Kudos to Johnny's!  You can taste the love in the food.

Served Iceberg lettuce (pet peeve )  stale bread but the London broil and hamburger were excellent.  Fries were under cooked and they need to change the fat fryer cooking oil.  Steak and burger were cooked as requested (this does nt happen often when eating out).

We ordered the wood charcoal chicken, not really sure of the name but it was the whole chicken chopped into pieces put into a to go box. It looks like 2 chicken in that box. Servings are huge. Chicken taste good but not the best but still very good. Service is above & beyond, gave us extra stuff w/ our order to go.

It was my first time coming here about a week ago for a meeting. Our server was friendly and attentive. I ordered a club sandwich, which was huge, and also came with fries.

This is a nice restaurant, ideal for business meetings, family gatherings, dates, or lunch/dinner with a friend. The ambience is nice. Not too loud, but not too quiet. When you come here, dress nicely but at the same time there's no need to over-do it.

I need to put an update for Johnny's and hope that the owner or management will read the review. I love Johnny's the staff the atmosphere and I did love the beer and food but .............. there has been a few changes to their menu, some were great changes such as the $5 appetizers but some were not so good! They no longer have one of my fav dinner item which was their Lamb Chops! Their new Spicy Calamari which I love is very inconsistent in flavor! Sometimes too greasy, sometimes bland etc. not to mention other items. They no longer have any Pale Ale selection of beers and a bit smaller beer selection on tap. What hap pend Johnny's??????

The first time I went there, I decided to split a large pasta dish with a friend.  They informed me that there was a splitting fee.  WHAAA? Anyone who has a splitting fee is not A-OK in my book.  Still the food was pretty good and there sure was a lot of it.  The splitting fee also included that each person gets a soup or a salad, which is kind of nice.

The second time I went there, I got carry out (so that I wouldn't have to worry about the splitting fee).  The fettucini al fredo with chicken is a must-try for al fredo lovers.  For everyone else, it MIGHT be a heart attack waiting to happen.

A lot of the food is a little too rich for me- fills you up in the... man-i'm-going-to-regret-this-tomorrow way.

I love Johnny's! My only complaint is that I don't eat here enough.

Fantastic twin filet dinner for $30... The filets are great and tender. I get a salad with it (the balasmic dressing is to die for!!!)..

They have mouth watering wood roasted chicken...

If you're up this way and looking for a good sit down restaurant, go to Johnnys... Trust me.

Three of us visited on Christmas eve.

Two of us ordered the skirt steak with shrimp.  Both of us ordered it medium, mine was medium, my friend's was not.  I thought it was just her, but she tasted mine and found it medium and tasty. Our third had the steak and lobster and was quite pleased quality for $20 price.  $73 tab for the 3 of us (3 sodas no drinks).

Their french onion soup is delicious. The highlight of my meal was the mashed potatoes -  a side on a large plate, (I'm sure what would be called TWO portions), I ate it ALL - I could eat those every day!    It was packed, but hey it was Christmas Eve.

Their take out is "take-away" -upper echelon

this place is one of my favorite places to go for lunch with my co-workers.  The food portions are large, and their prices are reasonable, and  It is conveniently located a block from work. In addition to their regular menu, they have a daily lunch special, mostly under $10.00 and your entrée always comes with a large bowl of soup or salad.   One of my favorites is their Wood roasted Chicken with their homemade mashed potatoes and vegetables.  Their chicken is  seasoned with garlic and comes out so crispy and slightly burned on the outside, but oh so juicy in the inside.  If you are a fan of Onions and Livers, don't miss their baby calf liver and onions.

I have no complaints about this place.

We've gone here a few times and its great for a slightly more upscale dining experience without breaking the bank. Most items on the menu fall between $10-$20 a plate, a few steaks and such are over that but nothing that unafforable.

They have a wood burning oven for roasting chicken and pork which is clearly some of the best selections on the menu but the london broil I'd had was very decent as well.

The french onion soup was also a bowl of frenchy, oniony and cheesy goodness.

It can attract an older crowd but thats not something that I really pay that much attention to, old people gotsta eat too.

Good place to go to celebrate some sort of occasion for a nicer evening out.

I was told they have awesome calamari and ribs and finally got to try it one Friday evening.

For just two people, we shared a pound of fried calamari and finished every one of those little guys! It was delicious! 4 stars for just that and that alone.

Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the BBQ baby back ribs. I thought the meat was kind of gamy and tough (I've had a lot of ribs in my lifetime). The charbroiled skirt steak was not cooked to order; it was not medium rare. Even though it's called a "charbroiled" steak, there was no crispiness to it. Seemed like it was boiled and drenched in sauce.

When I first walked in there, I was taken aback by the decor and the crowd. It was definitely not what I expected. I had imagined a bar-like/tap-like atmosphere and instead, it was just like a diner and the crowd is indeed mature. We stuck out like a sore thumb, but it's ok.

Overall, I was not impressed with the two meats but I will go back for calamari, martinis, and the live singer tucked away at the bar who sang classic songs and a Bruno Mars song.

I've been here several times, had a variety of different meals.  This is a meat and potatoes place. Their food is good and consistent.  The only time I didn't have a good experience here was when they had a one man band that destroyed many songs that I love.  Definitely an older crowd and dated place...a supper club kinda vibe...but it's not always about the atmosphere, so I am a fan.

    Sorry, but WAY OverRated.

Wines were cheap, and they tasted like it.

When you need a place to dine in the burbs, this is an affordable place with great food! OK so the ambiance, is....well, let's say a more mature crowd, however the food is Yummy and a quick 10 min drive from my job in Northbrook ;).
The chicken is wood roasted, tender and quite tasty! There is a special on crab legs if you're in the mood for seafood. The wait staff is friendly and efficient....just what the doctor ordered during my lunch break!

I'd have to place Johnny's in the "nicer restaurant" category, but to be honest it's not all that nice. You wear nicer clothes to it, (at least we do,) the atmosphere is nice, complete with a good decorative scheme, well-dressed waiters and hostesses, a wine list, fresh bread and tablecloths, the service is good, and the prices are definitely what you'll experience in a nicer restaurant, but the food itself is just not worth it. It's a complete disappointment.

Everything I've ever tried in this restaurant, ranging from Fettuccine Alfredo to chicken to salad to steaks is done much better by restaurants that are VERY close to it. If you want steaks or fish, Bob Chinn's is not exactly a formal affair, but it's down the road from Johnny's (drive north on Milwaukee and into Wheeling for roughly 5-7 minutes,) and food-wise it just blows this place away. If you're worried about the costs at Bob Chinn's, (many things are more expensive than Johnny's,) order the 12 dollar 8 oz strip steak with its side and unlimited garlic rolls to take care of that. Personally, for pasta and salad, or the bar, I'd gladly take TGIF, (also not a formal affair,) which is just across the street from Johnny's. If you're going specifically for a restaurant with that "nicer" feel, you have even less reason to choose Johnny's. Those are usually the most special occasions, you don't want to ruin one with a bad restaurant.

A quick night out after a long week, so we headed to Johnny's before trying to catch a movie at the Glen. Tracy hadn't ever been to Johnny's, so I figured we'd give it a shot, it had been a while for me. But was a favorite of my brothers when he lived in Wheeling.

We were seated immediately, no reservation, staff was great, even when I joked with her a few minutes after taking our orders that I wanted to change to chicken... food came fast, everything was great. We got in and out quickly and we'll definitely be back.

    3.5 I suppose.

My family was staying nearby, it was pouring outside, we needed a place nearby to eat.

Their chicken wasn't bad, but I think peruvian chicken is better.  Their ribs were alright, but nothing spectacular as well.

The inside is kinda dreary...the place reminds me of a fancier ruby tuesdays.  wasnt bad, but not enough to make me want to come back.

2nd time dining with family (this time 2, last time 6).
    Ordered the following entries:
    - Ribs (full slab): Must have been a small pig, as the ribs for a full slab seemed to be on the small side.  Nothing special, but I do recall 1st time here I was more impressed.
-Chk Ceasar Salad: HUGE portion, great tasting chicken. By far the best dish ordered
-1/2 Chicken: Magic wood?  Not today. Moist chk but I am not sure they marinate it, as it had no taste outside of the "smokey wood" aftertaste from the spit (wood fired).
-Cheeseburger: Nice size, good taste.  Far better than local Hackney's.

Summary: I would come back here for a hearty lunch, but would skip dinner or at least if I had the taste for ribs, would go elsehwere. Service 1st time was Excellent, this time avg.

I've been here a couple of times, most recently for a sponsored corporate gathering/meal.  My experience with the restaurant staff has been good.  The food is not disagreable; just not something that makes me go "wow!"  It is something that I can get at many other privately-owned establishments.

Overall, Johnny's serves up a decent dish, but if I found a privately-owned establishment in the area that has that "wow" factor, I'd probably go to that place.

Also, the parking lot is wee bit tight when all the other places are busy.

I almost forgot- a couple of my friends got the Bailey's coffee. Oh. My. God.  You could've stripped car paint with the stuff.  The other drinks were fairly safe, but I...I don't think I'll risk ordering one of these at a future point in time.

Yea, I've been here the obligatory couple of times........

Never been disappointed.   The wait staff is wonderful, never had a bad experience.  Always on top of their game.

Food:  wood roasted ribs, chicken, some steaks.  As previously stated comes with soup or salad, that is usually very good.

If I had to pick out something they could improve on it would be the fact that their tables are a bit too close together for comfortable manuevering through the restaurant.  I am a very small person and if I have trouble, then its a problem.   Good place to go to for a homey meal

I've been here quite a few times.  One time it was with a large party of 15+ and have been happy with each meal.  It's good for large parties b/c they take reservations and it's a casual restaurant offers a wide variety of American food.

Their mashed potatoes cannot be matched and their roasted chicken is good as well.  I've had their ribs before - they're good but not great.

This place has a real air of nostalgia to it - 60's supper club is how I would describe it. Dark, cozy, good service, good classic American fare.

I would recommend this place to anyone in the area.  I enjoyed every course and wouldn't mind coming back for some more!!

I was staying at a hotel near Johnny's Kitchen and Tap and decided to stop in for a bite for dinner.  I was at first nervous about this place because the parking lot was full (which is a good sign, don't get me wrong) about waiting for a table, but was pleasantly surprised they took me in immediately.  Inside, reminds me of a very old restaurant (in a good way) with lots of wood and has that warm I want to hang out here after a snowstorm feeling to it.  Was immediately seated in a nice booth and given bread for meal.

Johnny's Kitchen and Tap is an upper end bar and grill.  Most of the food here has a Greek twist to it.  Options such as pasta, chicken, pork chops, and steaks cover the menu.  Prices here are very reasonable; most items here can be had for under $16.  I decided upon the Greek Pork Chops.  The Pork Chops also came with a salad and I got the Mash Potatoes side.  I got the salad and I guess being from California I'm a bit spoiled about the freshness of the produce I get.  While the salad was generous, definitely not fresh.  But overall still good.  Now the pork chops on the other hand, a whole better than what I get in California.  Got 2 big chops with a generous serving of mash potatoes.  Cook just right with a nice taste of olive oil and garlic and pepper.  1 chop would have been more than enough for me.  I have to say, I felt bad only paying $13 for the amount of food I got here.

Overall, service was good, the waitress and bust boys were very attentive, with the exception of the salad, the food was very good, and for my entire meal, cost me $20 including tip, would highly recommend Johnny's Kitchen & Tap for your nice sit down meal.  A well earned 4 stars.

What kind of magic wood do they use to roast the chicken??  This place has incredible wood roasted chicken (their specialty) with homemade mashed potatoes & veggies- the ultimate in comfort food.  Everything is homemade,  from the soup to the salad dressings.  Very reasonably priced and meals come with soup or salad.  I also like the ambiance - very relaxed and candle lit.

Food is good, can't complain.  Yummy ribs and chicken. Service ok.  Same owners as  Alexanders on Dempster, I think.  This is a place we go back to a few times a year.  I believe they offer more on the kid's menu than hotdogs and chicken fingers...I think you can get a real piece of chicken or a half slab of ribs for the kiddies.

Oops...I meant Andrew's, not Alexander's.  Early onset Alzheimer woman...

I love some good wood-roasted chicken, and it's a specialty of this bar/ restaurant!  I took it as a good sign when I could smell this place across the parking lot.

It's a casual spot for American food, and is a little more upscale inside than I expected (it's in a strip mall, and I wasn't expecting much). Menu is comprised of steaks, chops, ribs, burgers, pastas and sandwiches. I was a little worried when my husband ordered swordfish (one of the specials), but he reported that it was excellent.  My quarter chicken was tender and tasty.

Portions are huge here, so come hungry.  Our waitress was excellent; checked on us often (and this was a busy Saturday night) and kept our drink glasses filled.  Good option if you're in the area.

Very nice bar and restaurant serving high quality standard American fare plus pasta.  Wood roasted chicken, ribs, pasta and fish are all done very well here and we have never been disappointed with a meal.  It is a nice place to take friends who want traditional, non-ethnic food offerings.  The restaurant is very large but its strip mall parking lot is not, so it may be hard to park even when there are loads of tables available.
