Houston, we have a problem.
My love for Julian's has lasted for years, but my past 2 experiences have been kinda bad.
Last time out (as documented) my well done burger came back punished and greasy. Â So tonight I ordered a burger med well and the little woman ordered hers well done.
Mine came back red and cold, hers as similar. Â I HATE to do this, but we sent them back. Â The server was great and patient and the chef remade the burgers. (nice touch, I would have been fine with tossing them back on). Unbelievably, the results were almost identical. Â Clearly underdone. Â It wasnt busy at all, so its not like this was rushed. Â The chef just doesnt know how to cook a burger.
I love you Julian's, I truly do. Â But you have stopped being my first choice. Â And this bums me out!
I friggin love this place! while I think they are known for their vegan/vegetarian cuisine, they have dishes and desserts for vegans and meat eaters alike! the best part about this place is the beer. they have SEVERAL craft ales on tap and bottled. they also have a beer dinner. I am unsure of the frequency of the dinners, but I went to one a few months ago and really enjoyed it!! The close off the resturant for this event. highly recommended!! Can't wait to go back!
Review Source:This is a cool restaurant with easy access. The feel is very contemporary and even a bit "punk" (for you old timers). Â I think "punk" is referred to as something else now, but honey badger don't give a ...
My wife loved her vegan Benny (short for Benedict) & my brother in law had a different Benne and found it great too. I tried the Cinnamon/orange French toast which sounded awesome but fell well short of my expectations. Â The bread was home made but it had little cinnamon flavor and not a hint of orange. Â I'm going to try my own version at home because the concept sounds great. Â
We'd definitely hit this place again and would make this a regular if we lived in RI.
My first experience with a Providence restaurant was in August of 2010, and we went to Julian's. I was visiting for the first time ever; four months later, I would move here from Houston, TX, and my first experience with a Providence restaurant as a citizen of the city would also be Julian's.
One might suggest I have reasons to be fond of the place that lie outside the purview of the establishment, and one would not be wrong. However, I believe that this restaurant's merits stand on their own without sentimental anecdotes to support them.
Julian's is, in a word, cool. It has crazy crap on the walls, artsy designer tabletops, Jacob's-ladder folding menus, it plays eclectic music, it has cartoons and movies from the 80's playing on a TV in the bathroom. One gets the sense that this is a restaurant owned and staffed by people who know what they like and refuse to apologize for waving their hands and shouting about it; for me personally, I like the things they like and find it charming and familiar.
It's loud and busy and full of smells and sounds. You are not going to Julian's to talk intimately with a lover in the dimness of a romantic alcove; you are going to Julian's to drink beers and eat gourmet food and laugh. Probably you are going there to scope out the tattoos of your waitstaff - they are bitchin' tattoos.
The food itself is beyond reproach. Beyond the every day menu which features a robust mix of a la carte items, sandwiches and the like, entrees, and a surprisingly, gratifyingly large array of vegetarian and vegan options, you will also find a specials board in the center of the room, upon which is listed five or six options in categories: appetizer, sandwich, entree, dessert, cocktail, et cetera et cetera. The meals range from peasant fare made sublime to elaborate caprices that make one feel as decadent as the flavors of the dish - all priced below thirty dollars a plate.
Have a scoop of the ice cream. It's house-made and obscenely good.
The beer selection is unparalleled and would be worth four stars on its own. The house specialty cocktails deserve an honorable mention. The bloody mary is basically perfect.
I would give it five stars, except for one quibble: Julian's is not big enough to support its own popularity. Expect slow service during rushes, and hour-plus wait lists for weekend brunch.
I'll keep coming back, again and again.
We stopped in for brunch about a month ago and had a great experience overall.
Im a giant Eggs Benedict addict and its sort of my yardstick for breakfast/brunch restaurants. That being said, Julian's knocks it out of the park.
I was at first off-put by the music they had playing (speed metal), so initially I felt as though I's walked into a biker bar that oh yeah, just so happened to sell eggs, but as we settled in (and the music changed) we enjoyed ourselves, had a great meal and found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating.
4 stars-I'll definitely be back.
I've never done Julian's for brunch. Sue me.
I do however, live really close, and I've been only a handful of times. There is a reason for this.
Pros:
The menu is diverse and appealing to a wide variety of diets, including vegetarian and vegan. I've had their black bean burger and inhaled it, and I'm not even a vegetarian.
They have a great beer selection for those into craft brews.
The bathroom is full of Star Wars toys and a television that plays cartoons.
They do takeout, this saves you from their horrid service.
Cons:
The service has always been a crapshoot to me. Maybe because I'm not one of those "hipsters" (I said it Yelp, HIPSTER. RAWR!) that frequent the place, and I'm not good enough to be dining at this place. In fact, I've had sugar-coated rude service there twice, both involving the sidewalk tables. My BF and I went there once for a beer one evening, and sat outside, the server came outside and said, "Can I help you?" Coldly. Well yes, that's what you're here for, right? She continued to state that if we wanted to sit outside, we had to come inside and ask....okay, fair enough I guess. But I know in the 10+ years I put into food service, I was a good enough server to watch the outside tables. Money is money, honey. She did serve us our beer, ("Oh, only drinks?") and wasn't worth a second round to stick around.
The second time, we sat outside, and went inside, as requested, to say that we were going to be out there, and they told us they were closed.
...Closed. At 3pm. The place was JAMMING. There were tables next to us, oh look, hipsters, that were getting fresh drinks when we arrived, but they were closed. I get it. I'm not underground enough to dine here. Maybe it was a shift change or something, I'm not sure, but who closes between peak hours on a Saturday? When the place is absolutely slamming? I hate to say it, Julian's, but I call bullshit.
Oh, and the clientele is 90% snooty hipster. When you walk in, you will get grilled by folks sitting in there. I don't know why, but they don't seem to like us mainstreamers in their precious restaurant. Bite me, hipsters. You've ruined Federal Hill. I can say that, because I was here BEFORE IT WAS COOL. It's not the "Westside" it's Federal Fuckin' Hill. Home to college students, low-income families, and the mob. Â If you don't like it, go live in Olneyville.
Sorry Julian's, tell your servers and your regulars to remove the sticks from their orifices and get over the fact that the Hill ain't theirs. BTW, your french fries are awesome.
Never again, Julian's. I went there on a weekday night with a party of seven. It took more than 45 minutes for our food to come out, despite the fact that the restaurant was only half full and most of our party ordered salads or appetizers. I asked for the tapas plate, which the server accurately described as "small". When it came out it had clearly been sitting for a while - the two meat appetizers were stone cold and greasy, and the goat cheese had congealed with the purée below into an unappealing pink mass. I asked to have the meat appetizers warmed up, as they were inedible as served, and the server huffed and eventually brought back the same plate with the pork belly lukewarm and leathery and the lamb still cold and crusted with grease. For $12, it was a distinctly unsatisfying dish. I understand that even the best of places have off nights, but this time they didn't even try. There are better places with better service.
Review Source:I never thought I would be writing this review...
My partner and I went to Julians this morning for breakfast. The outside area was crowded, but the inside was very quiet. We were greeted and told to sit where ever we felt like sitting. We were leisurely going over the specials board when we were approached by the waitress, who asked us if we knew where we were going to sit yet. When we replied that we weren't sure yet, she proceeded to slam down two glasses of water in front of us and walk in between us and the board (too close for comfort) without saying excuse me.
For the three years I've lived in PVD, Julians has been the go-to spot for delicious food and interesting, laid back atmosphere. However, over those said years, this place seems to have become a tourist trap that caters to primarily the upper class, and the attitude show it.
The waitstaff seem to have serious attitude problems, busy or not. It's almost like part of the hiring process they are asked if they are capable of being snobby.
If any of the Julians staff bother to read this, I have some advice for you:
If you are going to charge us triple for something we could easily make at home (like a tofu scramble or pancakes), then you need to make it worth our time and money to come to your establishment. A super cool, artsy, kitschy atmosphere and the sweetest bathroom in town are NOT ENOUGH. Pervasively poor attitudes from your waitstaff literally made us walk out today, and we won't be coming back.
If you are going to offer "alternative" food options, your staff need to be ready and willing to discuss those options. Today I was treated as though I was the scum of the earth for asking if you have any gluten-free breads or pancake mixes.
In short, RIP Julians. The fun is done.
I ABSOLUTELY loved the brunch here! I went this past weekend with 2 of my girls and we had brnch for my friends birthday. Yes, Â the place is def quirky..and alot of these reviews say the services is bad, the staff is rude and isnt the cleanest. I saw NONE of that.
Our server was pleasant & nice. I loved the decor and all the madness hung on the walls in the place. Luckily it wasnt crazy busy and we didnt have to wait. My breakfast was so good..I ordered the traditional eggs benedict but it was far from http://traditional.it had this great grilled italian bread and spicy ham. The hollandise was fresh & delicious. The home fries got a lil cajun kick of seasoning. Â My friends both loved theirs too! I was too busy inhaling mine..I forgot what they got. I do know one plate had homemade sausage that I was told was good.
So yes it's a lil nutty in there...but the food was inventive & delicious! I mean where else can you dine decliously, enjoy a Pez museum while you freshen up...in the washroom as Willy Wonka plays in the background....dont know what I'm talking about? think I had one too many cocktails..lol go see for yourself. Â :)
3 stars for the consistently crappy and rude service, especially during busy brunch Sunday. Like, I get it, you're a small space with a long wait - so don't give us a 'tude for opting to wait outside and then accusing us of leaving and "screwing up your waitlist" because you couldn't put two and two together. Would you prefer that we stand in the crowded doorway while your waitstaff pushes through us like a high school talent show mosh pit? Poor guy spilled milk everywhere... but luckily at Julian's it's passe to cry about it. Or anything, for that matter.
However, I must give props to the woman who makes the specialty drinks menu - ladygirl, you rock! My boyfriend came in and was devastated to see the Mexican Radio was no longer on the cocktail list. We asked the next available employee about it and it just so happened to be her. She chatted with us for a bit about how its omission was a mistake and they'd be happy to fix him one (which, by the way, was the beginning of my sick obsession with mezcal). She had a very pleasant disposition, unlike the others.
So why do I keep coming back? Because the food is awesome. The only thing that ever disappointed me was that weird vegan-cheese-filled-fake-sausage thing that sounds good in theory but was salty and stomach wrenching in practice (and i ordered it at a cranky waitress's suggestion). Mostly, i'm into their brunchy breakfasty offerings but the Vegan Cheesesteak they have is amazing and rivals some of my NYC vegan staples. I asked to have it on a roll instead of a wrap and I think this helped avoid a soggy situation. My alcoholic jam here is the Bloody Mary. Julian's always does it right - it's just hot enough, just flavorful enough, just big enough to justify the splurge.
Also, the bathroom is a trip. Quirky and fun.
I hate to love this place but I love this place. I really wish they took reservations for brunch though, to avoid the chaos that is their 1 hour and 45 minute wait sometimes on Sundays with an unaccommodating space to wait for your name to be called and waiters who can't remember they are in Providence, not Brooklyn.
What a great little eclectic place. Â I think the owner must actually be close to my age, only much more hippish. Â You have the references to D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) and the original Star Wars, not to mention the Popeye's paintings. Â
Anyway, even for a meat eater such as myself, they make it interesting.
So down side first. Â They wife did have the Orange and Cinnamon French Toast. Â She was very disappointed. Â The French baguette was really good but I think they did soak it I the custard. Â Seemed like it was just a quick dip, so it was really flavorless.
Up sides. Â We had great pancakes for the daughter. Â I had a wonderful omelet that was on special. Â It has Chinese sausage, onions, peppers and cheese. Â I don't know what is in Chinese Sausage, and having seen a Chinese Meat Market, frankly I don't want to know. Â I will just live in the knowledge that it was really good.
Service was fantastic. Â From the gentleman that met on outside and seated us to the young lady that waited on us. Â Service was prompt and always with a smile.
So, this is down the street from Nicks, and I think it is a great alternative.
I really wanted to like this place after reading reviews. I left disappointed.
I got the vegan Philly wrap. It was meh. Seitan was chewy. "Cheese" tasted funny to me.
My friend got the seitan with potatoes and carrots. Hers was meh also. Again, seitan was funky.
Saving grace was the vegan brownie. That was amazing!
I can't remember exactly what I ordered but it was some sort of vegan breakfast that was overloaded with salt and tasted a little burnt. The only reason I'm not giving it 3-stars is because I feel like I may have caught them at a bad time because this is literally the #1 place everyone has told me to try whenever I mention that I am a vegan.
With their vast vegan options & ever-growing list of drafts, I'm entirely sure this place will soon become one of my few favorite restaurants!
Bunch was wonderful. Â Server was wonderful. Â Food is impressive. Â I had the isreali, not too spice but just the right kick. Â My friend had Chocolate stuffed friend toast, with real maple syrup she loved it. Â I would go back in a heart beat. Â Parking is on the street but we had no problem find it.
Review Source:The food was simply fantastic BUT I was not happy itch my service. The waiter had absolutely no personality and was not very attentive to our table. I sat there for 15 minutes before anyone came over to me.. I will give this place another shot though - maybe the waiter was having a bad night.
Review Source:Julian's... What can I say about you? I love you? Yes. You blow my mind sometimes? Yes. Best beer list in the city? Yes.
If fact, the only complaint I could ever give you is about the service, but it has improved tremendously since I began coming here. I can see how people in other reviews have been put off by the servers. There was one kid that I just wanted to shake the first couple of times I came in because of his utter rudeness. However, I have had some of my best experiences here. Anthony(?) is my favorite server, and I should really remember his name better, so I apologize. (I'll buy you another round next time I see you!)
The food is amazing. Every day the chefs come up with some of the most original items I have ever seen. You can really see the passion they have for their work. The most memorable for me was the hot dog Benedict. It was New Year's Day, and we were out for brunch with my fiance's parents. It was our second time there, and when we saw it, everyone but her mom skirted it. We play a game that the person with the most unique and delicious dish wins, and she won. The hot dog was homemade and everything on the plate blended perfectly.
As far as the beer list, you really have to see it to believe it. A note to my beer loving friends: They have Utopias by the shot!!
All in all, this is one of my favorite hangouts.
I have this thing for food porn. I'll get to that in a minute.
For about three years, I lived across the street from this joint. Yeah, everyone touts the brunches on the weekend and that's cool -- I'll stick to the amazing dinners and beer selections with the less insane crowds on the week nights. The waitstaff knows you're name. They take care of you. They're chill, friendly, know what they're talking about, and care about their jobs and what they're doing. However, my favorite thing in the world used to be sitting at the bar with a good stout and watching the chefs cook. It's pretty cool to watch, if that's your thing. I used to sit there on lazy Tuesday evenings, drink some beers, and learn about cool cooking things just by watching. Plus, you get to eat it later, and that's awesome.
Always get whatever is on the special's for the day. You will never regret it.
Drink the beer. Drink all of the beer. When you're tired of beer, drink the mixed drinks. When you're tired of those, buy the kitchen staff a round of shots. They're awesome. When you're tired of that, buy the wait staff shots. They're awesome too.
Tl;dr: yes, brunch is great, but dinner is best.
First, let's jump ahead to where I had to use the bathroom. I walk up to a middle aged woman tapping her foot anxiously. Ten minutes later she knocks and opens the door to her son who is standing there and staring into space. She grabs him and apologizes for him taking so long before I realize why he was dawdling; there were cartoons playing on a small TV in the corner. Voltron to be exact. I laughed and told her I was going to have a hard time not watching a few minutes of it myself. This place is f@#$ing awesome.
Lots of awesome specials and beers on tap. Not that they have an exceptional whisky selection, but they definitely have a few really nice whiskies on hand to serve those who appreciate a good dram or Bourbon. Nobody carries Bruichladdich... which they do here and is awesome.
Pick an Eggs Benedict, any Benedict. It will be delicious, but I highly recommend the Nova Scotia. I would sell my first born for a lifetime supply of that smoked salmon. It's a deliciously supple, smokey cut. Perfect, like the music they play, which transitions seamlessly from KMFDM to DJ Jazzy Jeff. The hash comes in twelve varieties and deserves a sprinkle of hot sauce, even if you're not into that. They are all amazing.
This is breakfast paradise. Be prepared to search for on street parking and an hour wait on weekends.
Visited here for Sunday brunch when I was passing through RI. Waited and hour and a half for breakfast, I suspect it would have been longer if the weather was nicer. The place is small and doesn't have many places to stand inside. People didn't seem to mind the wait, downing a few cocktails as they did (good drink menu). Anyway we wanted to try something new and had no where pressing to be.
Any-who hour and half later, breakfast was well worth the wait. The various potato hashes they make are delicious and really made the meal. I had an omelet, it was pretty standard but good as far as omelets go. But the mushroom boursin hash had me closing my eyes and rocking back and forth savoring the flavor (yea that good). My boyfriend had the jack cheese, salsa and pork hash, also delicious. I kept trying to steal bites off his place.
We split french toast since everyone seemed to be ordering it. It was also good as far as french toast goes, not out of this world, (prob because I was still obsessing with the hash) but you can jaz it up by adding all kinds of toppings.
I've calculated its only a 45 minute drive from my house. I'm planing my next trip. Hopefully I wasn't blinded by starvation from the wait and the food is still as good as the first time around.
I walked in here after reading the reviews, and I figured I'd give this place a shot. Â I pretty much knew that I'd be stuck waiting for a bit, so I wasn't surprised to be told that the wait would be 30 to 45 minutes after I gave the maitre d' my name . What disappointed me was that after I patiently cooled my jets outside for 30 minutes, I sauntered over to check on my status, and I was told I'd have to wait another 30 to 45 minutes. Â I explained that I checked in earlier, but it didn't matter. Â Ding, there goes a star.
Once finally seated, my party and I had very pleasant service, but several of the waiting clientele had crowded inside and were actually leaning over our table. Â One guy had really smelly, frightening dreadlocks - frightening in the sense that junk in his hair was threatening to fall on our table and into our food. Â I asked the leaners if they could move over a little, but apparently I don't speak hipster very well and was thus ignored.
The waiter and maitre d' were actually sympathetic and told the unwashed masses to back off a bit. Â It worked for a little while, but the place was so crowded that they ended up leaning pretty closely again. Â Ding, another star.
I have to say the interior of the restaurant is eclectic and engaging. Â The menu had a lot of offbeat items that I'd love to come back and try. Â The food we received was nicely prepared, presented well, and very tasty. Â The staff is friendly and engaging, if ineffective in crowd control. Â
I can see why this place is popular and also how that might eventually lead to its undoing.
I come to this place a lot for brunch and would give it 4 stars, but sometimes the service is amature at best.
The last time my son and I were here eating brunch the check was placed on the table in drive-by fashion before we were even half way done with our meals.
Sorry broseph, but do you want to turn over the table, or get a decent tip?
It's things like this that go up my ass.
Guess what? There are other great places (one only a few blocks away) to get brunch, and they aren't full of smelly bearded hipsters that rush people off of their tables.
If you can't keep calm and collected working in a busy environment like that, and aren't able to give quality service without rushing customers then find an easier job.
I'm only coming for the bennies, hashes, and bloodies.
Next time I'm going to say something and be a dick about it.
this place really caught me off guard. Â i wasnt expecting such a good experience. Â its large and has a lot of exposed brick and concrete, but manages to be warm and inviting. Â service is friendly and food is fast. Â it also has the most unique bathroom i have ever seen - extensive Gi joe and pez collections and Star Trek episodes playing on a tv.
we started w a couple beers at the bar while waiting. Â we noticed that the beer selection is huge, with a glass of beer ranging from $2 to $250. Â all food was standard american fare with a slight twist. Â my friend pn described it as "familiar and unique." Â taste was fantastic - flavorful, tender, juicy, crispy. Â we had corn beef, bacon cheeseburger sausage, lamb, meatloaf, fries, burger, vegan chai ice cream. Â my friend that "hates vegan food" loved the ice cream. Â
the best meal ive had in a long time.
Julians has the best eggs benedict I've ever tasted. Something about the sauce man. And? It's on french bread. What a combo.
The coffee is good(looking) and strong, just like the wait staff.
The potatoes served up on the side have an amazing spice to them. They have homemade ketchup! Are you salivating yet?
Their mixed greens salad comes wrapped up in a tasty dressing. Highly recommend it.
Best hash outside of Amsterdam. (or so says Luke. It's good!)
We love breakfast at Julians. It's always quick, filling, not too expensive, and de-freakin-licious.
OH! And USE THE BATHROOM while you're there!! It's awesome :)
If your looking for a good spot to get a drink in a chill place on the West Side, Julians is host to everyone from your Church goers on Sunday morning to your average 20 or 30-something bar crowd. A bit more on the eclectic side, the indoor scene is always changing with new artwork every so often, and a bar that looks oh so very different from everywhere else.
The menu holds much more than your average pub food, try more of a artistic version of your favorites, with quite a few vegan and vegetarian friendly items. And let's not forget about their drink selections. Every time I drive by Julians, it's always busy, so if your looking for dinner plans, be prepared to grab a beer and wait a few minutes for a table.
I've only gone in for drinks, until recently I met a few friends for brunch. The food was awesome, although I prefer a little less spice on my home fries. The proportions are fairly good-sized, so if your not splitting it or planning on a meal for later, order the 'half' size. Also, we were told that it would be a 25 min wait, try 50 and getting passed up on a table for another group of 4 that were older than us. But I'll give them a break, as it was a Sunday, a holiday and extremely busy.
Sigh, where do I begin? I was so excited to try this place for brunch, like I mentioned it all the time kind of excited. My excitement just came crashing down all over my eggs benedict.
First off I know its Sunday and you are crazy busy, I get that. You tell us thirty minute wait, okay I can handle that. It is freezing and there is no place to wait inside so I take a little trip over to Seven Star's Bakery and enjoy a nice hot tea for a few. I then go back over and you tell us we are two people down on the list. Okay great. Flash forward almost an hour into waiting, ummmm what happened to anything close to 30 minutes and being almost next on the list. Finally we get seated at an awkward round table for six people when there are only three of us. The music is loud, we are seated awkwardly, and can barely hear each other speak. Then the waitress (okay, I get it they are swamped) goes to a table seated after we are to take their drink order, bring them their drinks, and take their food order all while we are sitting there menus closed and anxious to order.
Finally the eggs benedict comes. How do I feel about this anticipated dish? Meh, it was okay but, pretty much impossible to cut into due to the bread being so thick. I am sad to say that I will not be returning.
Obviously this joint has a strong following so no need for a long & detailed review.
I'll just share my highlights....
Large portions. Quality ingredients.
Interesting combinations & twists on so called traditional breakfast.
Strong libations & eclectic cocktails. Darn good Bloody Marys.
Excellent craft/draft beer selection:
http://www.juliansprovid…
Congenial service. We were greeted upon entry & offered the option of coffee/cocktail while we waited.
Funky interior created the vibe. Varied clientele. Open kitchen.
Their bacon is apparently amazing. Varied hash & omelet options. B, L, & Dinner. Seafood, vegan, vegetarian, meet lovers, sweet tooth- they serve it all & w a smile. Specials everyday.
This place may not be for everyone. I tend to be open minded & dig exploring different places. So listening to say Korn or Dio on volume 10 over coffee & granola pancakes on a Sunday morning may not be your cup o tea. But hey, whatever works. It all contributes to an interesting, colorful, tasty & enjoyable experience!
We made sure to get here right around five fifteen, since they don't take reservations for small parties. I suggest you do the same, because it fills up fast, and then you'd be missing out majorly. Everything was phenomenal. My steak was perfectly cooked, even though I was vague on the cooking instructions to the waitress ("somewhere between medium and medium rare?"), and the root vegetable croquette-like things were delicious and unique. Â My boyfriend's lamb entree was tender and flavorful; I couldn't tell which dish was better.
We also split the trifle of the day, which was pineapple upside-down themed. The cake part was the best- I could have eaten a whole plate of that- but the whole thing was great. My only quibble was that the pineapple ring on top made it a little tricky to get a cross-section of the whole trifle at once, but that's really a tiny thing.
Service was fine, and the prices were outstanding for the quality delivered.
Julian's is a solid breakfast joint on the West Side. The ambience is very quirky, Â boisterous, and artsy. It get extremely packed here, so I recommend going early on weekends. I can't say service is the best because it's sometimes difficult to get the waitstaff's attention and the food service can be a little slow when it's busy. However, the menu items are very creatively inspired and offer a vast array of interesting concoctions. My husband and I are huge fans of the Benedictions: Florentine, New York, and Nova Scotia. I believe I once tried fish tacos here, which didn't leave much to be desired. (I personally prefer authentic, simple & cheap, off-the-street tacos from LA.)
Most of the breakfast plates come with a large portion of country style potatoes, which are pretty tasty and filling. The Bloody Mary's here are good, but I must caution that the spicy version is almost uncomfortably spicy and will wreak havoc on your innards by the time you finish a whole tabasco-filled tall glass.
This is not a romantic, cozy, or quiet place, but it's a neighborhood favorite for good reason. It's a fun, loud hangout joint that boasts mixed crowds, good food, and funky art.
So this review is mostly a post-Nemo love note to Julian's....
My beau and I went to Julian's last Saturday afternoon--Julian's miraculously opened around 10am amidst the blizzard! Weary from shoveling, and with no heat or electricity, the warmth of Julian's was a welcome discovery. I couldn't believe how cheerful the waiting staff was--pleasant and efficient, while busting it to feed the throng of hungry West-ender's!
I had the hash special, a surprising combo of cornbread, kalamata olives, tomato, and ricotta. All the flavors melded together into a delicious sweet/savory hashy goodness. With eggs and toast to accompany (and a draft BBC coffeehouse porter, perhaps my favorite beer ever!), I was instantly revitalized. Alex B. had what he declared "the best burger ever...though that might have been the natural disaster talking." The patty was flavorful and tender (I know, I stole a bite), and the soft warm bun surrounding it was perfect. Disasters or no, we'll be back for more.
Julian's, your cold beers and cozy atmosphere warms my heart. Thanks for weathering the storm and uplifting your neighborhood!
Came here to try out this sought after Sunday Brunch this previous week. Â We called the night before to ask if they took reservations, we had never been before, they told us "no" - no other response. Â So then we responded with, "Well, is it very busy there on Sunday mornings/afternoons?" Â She responded with "It's hard to say."
It's hard to say? Â Are you dense? Â As we approached the restaurant in our car, we were shocked to see a crowd of people huddled around the building waiting to be seated. Â Yes, it looks like it would be "hard to say" if it was busy.
After waiting on the street for 45 minutes next to the stumps turned into benches surrounded with mounds of dog feces and homeless people aiming old nokia cell phones they thought were guns at us - we were seated. Â Our waiter appeared to have had a few "special brownies" before he got to work that day. Â He stared off into space and spoke no more than 4 words the entire meal.
The drink menu was short but unique. Â I'd never seen so many cocktails mixed with ginger beer. Â There were a great deal of vegan options as well as carnivorous delicacies. Â I had "The Sith Lord" omelette which contains red peppers, tomatoes, ham, and cheese with a side of bacon and my friend had the classic eggs benedict. Â The food was actually VERY good and the prices even better - though breakfast prices are usually pretty low. Â
The decor was pretty interesting. Â Our table was made out of old matchbooks. Â If you're wondering why there is a line to the bathroom, the person ahead of you probably got entertained by "Charlie & the Chocolate factory" playing on the tv in there - or maybe they are inspecting the pez dispenser collection.
I would like to give this place a higher review - but with the crowd management situation, I just can't. Â At first, I'm sure having people want to wait to eat at your place is flattering - but when you have no waiting area and very tight seating in a small place - seek a larger venue. Â I'm sure the ridable horse out front would feel just as at home somewhere else in town.
HEARTY breakfast spot!! i hear this place rivals Nick's & personally i prefer Julian's more homey vibe & food PLUS the wait isn't as long here!
LARGE PORTIONS
---paesano omelet: simple & comes w/ yummy salty home fries PLUS your choice of toast (the thick italian bread is toasted w/ butter MMmm)
---pork hash: not bad, a mix between hash and mashed potatoes
---sweet potato hash: too bad i'm not a sweet potato fan when its not deep fried
---Nelson eggs benedict: pork was a little dry but not bad (heard it used to be served over grits but now it's served over cornbread!)
HOMEMADE "CATSUP".. a bit sweet but they've also got regular ketchup!!!
