I love to come here for lunch. Their sushi's always very fresh and the best I have ever had. Their very affordable and the service is great! This gem in wicker park is perfect for a date night and or a quick bite with friends. I have recommended this sushi restaurant to others as well and they also love it!
Review Source:BYOB! Excellent, friendly, service and a cute spot for a date, group hangout, or just solo (I would do it!) Came in on a Friday night before heading to Bedford.
We had reservations here for 8 girls to celebrate a birthday and we all brought a glass of wine. We ordered lots of sushi and all of them were delicious. We had attentive service the entire time and the restaurant was pretty busy. Lots of people were here for an hour dinner and left. It seemed like a great quick dinner and chat spot. What surprised us was our bill around 15 dollars per person. Will definately go back again!
This place is the best for BYOB in Wicker Park/Bucktown area. It is located 2-3 blocks from The Bedford, so it's really nice to do a sit down dinner, get a little tipsy, and then head over to party at The Bedford.
We came here for a birthday dinner, ordered 2 appetizers and a boatload of Sushi (really. check out my pictures for a pic of the sushi). It was super delicious, fresh, and CHEAP. I believe we paid $20 each for the 5 of us (including paying for the birthday girl). At the end, we ordered a Mochi dessert platter (also see pic) and they put a candle in it and made it look awesome. All in all, I would definitely come back here to celebrate another birthday.
Only cons: it's really tiny, so make reservations early!
I met a friend for dinner upon her recommendation for great food and BYOB. I had seen Kin multiple times from driving past it, and I was very excited to try it! The restaurant itself  is very modern, sleek, and on the less traveled part of Milwaukee Ave in Noble Square.
The service was fantastic. Right when we walked in and placed our bottle of wine on the table, the waitress immediately chilled it without asking any questions, and provided glasses. Great service! Although, it was surprisingly slow for a Thursday evening. I did see quite a number of takeout orders though.
The food itself was great. They serve both Thai and sushi, and tonight we decided on sushi. We got three rolls - Crunchy Spicy Tuna, Dragon Roll, & New Tokyo. AMAZING. The New Tokyo was my favorite by far. The rolls were so big that we couldn't finish them all, and got to take some back for leftovers.
I will certainly be coming back for BYOB or ordering some great takeout in the very near future!
Great local spot for me. I'm a huge fan of red curry, but this place hooked me with their Pad Se Ew (or however you spell it). Their curries are thicker than most of the curries I've tried. The red curry has a higher cinnamon content. What I liked even more than their Thai food, was the sushi. Again, I state, I am not a huge sushi fan, so if I say it's good, it's good.
My favorites so far are the California, Crispy Kin, and Rock & Roll. The only thing I will say is that their sushi items can get a little repetitive.
The restaurant itself is pretty small, but I have never seen a wait. I only said it was not good for groups or children, because I can see a group of 10 people going there and the staff having to section off have the dining room. Also if kids are not well behaved they will be heard at every table and have no place to run but into others.
Enjoy!
I've lived just around the corner from Kin for about two years, but have only recently discovered how tasty - and affordable - this restaurant is.
I've definitely been missing out on some great food that's served with an upscale presentation that's sure to impress a date. And the restaurant is beautifully decorated with a modern design.
I am now a regular customer.
Highly recommended.
I always come for the New Tokyo. I always stay for the great BYOB service.
Kin is one of my favorite places for sushi in the city. This restaurant can easily be overlooked because it's located at the crap end of Milwaukee Ave. Regardless of its location this is a place that tis meant to be visited (multiple times). The sushi has always tasted very fresh and delicious. I strongly suggest trying the New Tokyo and Rock & Roll rolls. You won't regret it. I never use soy sauce here because the chefs are amazing.
The service is really good especially in the BYOB department. If you walk in with booze they have a bucket of ice on your table and half the speed of light. The food comes out pretty fast as well. That might because of how this place is never crowded and the chefs work diligently. Also, try their peanut sauce.
Kin has that special blend of quality food, service and fair pricing that will keep you coming back. To begin with this place is special to me because they have the best pad see u I have ever tasted for only 7.95. The dish comes out quickly and is always served hot with a nice peppery taste.
No I don't eat sushi because I'm strange. But my dinner guest rave about their sushi and how you don't even need soy sauce because the flavors are so well pronounced. I have enjoyed many a dinner sitting at their small sushi bar watching the chef roll my boyfriend's food dreams into rice.
This place is BYOB but more importantly it is BYOB done right. The open your drinks throw away empty bottles, bring you frosted glasses and understand that you are staying until the 6 pack is gone.
Just writing this has made me hungry.
I was delighted by Kin Sushi when I went here with a friend for dinner last weekend. First of all, it's BYOB, which a concept I love because I do not get to do this at my local restaurants (it's illegal) and it feels very risque. Â Sushi, with a hint of danger. Â OK, I know that's just me.
Anyway, the sushi I had was delicious. Â Sushi is probably my most favorite best food, so it's not exactly hard to convince me that a sushi joint is really good. Â That having been said, I have had enough of it over the course of my life to know the difference between bland, store bought junk and fresh, tasty sushi goodness. Â This tasted like goodness.
Service was prompt and courteous and the place was not overly busy but the staff let us linger after our meal, even though I knew they wanted to close. Â The decor is nothing to get excited about because the whole restaurant is pretty much an empty black box. Â When I got the bill, I was absolutely shocked. Â Kin was literally the cheapest sushi restaurant I've ever been to. Â When bf later questioned how much it cost, I happily told him, "It was practically free!"
We came here for my birthday. It was a Saturday evening and we were surprised that it's not crowded. I had a group of 14-15 people and they were able to accomodate all of us for a sushi restaurant.
All the sushi rolls we ordered tasted yummy! The sushi pieces were good, too. This place is BYOB, so perfect for those who want to bring in their own booze to dine with. I had a good time here..Good food, good company. Location is pretty good, too. Since it doesn't seem to be much of a popular area, we all got parking very close to the restaurant. Our parking was right in front! It is a small, cute sushi place and I would definitely give it a try if I were in town.
We came for sushi, and maybe should have had Thai. Â We also should have brought wine, it's a BYOB! Â Oops.
The edamame to start was excellent. Â It was warm, perfectly salted, and really hit the spot. Â The sushi selection was good. Â We had a few different rolls to try including the Aloha, Spicy Scallop, Dynamite, and Tang-Kwa Maki. Â None of the rolls were bad...but none of them really wow-ed us either. Â The bill for all of it was just about $30. Â Compared to other sushi places in the city that seemed like chump change.
Next time, I may try Thai food. Â The location and pricing (SO reasonable!) of this place makes it hard to give up on.
Probably the perfect sushi place I have ever been to - I've been to many. Perfect sushi chefs (one of them looks like a latino Derrick Rose), perfect taste, fair prices, goofy asian watresses with braces and striped leggings (looks like a bad Japanese anime), surprise dessert mini cupcakes, low key, always can get a seat, unpretentious, does not play corny down tempo ambiance music, not super dark like Coast Sushi (I told my girlfriend to smile during dinner just so I know she's across the table from me).
Only gripe - it can get cold in there.
Second gripe, my girlfriend begs for Kin Sushi daily.
This pretty much sums up all our conversations daily:
"Hey, what do you want to have for dinner?" Answer: Kin Sushi
"Hey what do you want for breakfast?" Answer: Kin Sushi
"Hey what's the name of that museum we went to yesterday?" Answer: Kin Sushi.
"Hey did you pay the bills yesterday?" Answer: Kin Sushi.
Kin, blame her for losing a star on this review.
(If I rated this a 5, she would look at it and use my 5 star review to get what she wants so I refuse to).
Milwaukee's Kin has a very modern feel to it, almost too modern as it not only looked cold, it felt cold in the restaurant.
The service is where I had the most problem. Our waitress was nice, but very shy and quiet--I think maybe she didn't speak English very well or was embarrassed to speak it? And it took her FOREVER to take our order (and the place was empty) and when she finally did, she only took half our table's order, so one of us had to go find her, so we can finish taking our order. It was all very strange. Â
My food was simple and good. I got a warm chicken and rice dish, but my particular dish was not enough. I was left hungry, which is one of the things I hate when spending all that time at a restaurant and leaving unsatisfied. I did like the BYOB option and they did supply glasses and opened our wine promptly. It was surprisingly inexpensive, so that was nice.
I will give it another chance and maybe try their sushi next time though from the other reviews I was scared away from the sushi, but half our table ordered sushi and it looked good, but because of the chill in the air, it encouraged me to get a warm dish anyway...
Kin, get more assertive servers that are happy to take the customer's order and not frightened to!
It's pretty hard to go wrong with joints like Kin. Decor is great, service is friendly and helpful (but they dont come by much) AND food is delightful.
Between three people, the special makis and an edamame was enough to fill our tummies without being too full (left enough space for some heavy drinking--YAY!) I'd recommend the Sunny and Dragon (or was it sumo?). Can't remember what else we had, but it was delicious :)
Ordered some mochi for dessert and it came with cute, but cold mini cupcakes that remind me of the mini cupcakes that you buy from the grocery store... so that was a buzz kill.
So it wasn't memorable, but it wasnt terrible.. prices were affordable, so it was a great choice after a night of fine dining and before a night of binge drinking.
Willing to go back if I'm in Chicago often enough!
This is my go to sushi spot when I'm craving it. Â I can always find parking outside, and they also deliver. Â It's byob, and pretty easy to get a reservation. Â There's a liquor store a few blocks down that sells wine, sake, oh and 40's.
Their "kin salad", made up of tuna, avocado, and I think mango is really good. Â My favorite roll is their "twang-ka" maki, which is a bunch of fish with cucumber wrapping and no rice. Â I also really like their futo maki and summer roll.
A few downsides - I ordered the snow crab roll, which had imitation crab legs in it. Â I ate it anyways and didn't say anything, but I should have. Â I've been here probably 7 times, and the sushi has always been good except for one off night where the cucumber around my twang-ka roll appeared to have been frozen, as it had an odd consistency. Â I ordered a papaya salad which also appeared to have been previously frozen.
I'll continue to eat here until I find a better hole in the wall sushi spot that is convenient, but this is the best I've found so far.
In all honesty my feelings about this place were so strong it was the reason I came home and created a yelp account so that I could post my experience. Â I live close by and have been wanting to try Kin for awhile and upon reading the reviews, though mixed as they were, felt it was a good choice for tonight. Â My boyfriend and I are both sushi and Asian food lovers. Â Neither one of us are particularly hard to please by any means. Â We were both extremely disappointed by our meal tonight. Â We ordered 3 rolls of sushi and a plate of pad thai. Â Thank goodness for the pad thai (which was honestly good) because we could not finish any of the rolls of sushi we had ordered - a first for us. Â
We ordered the spicy scallop (one of our staple sushi rolls), the Crispy Kin and Red Sky. Â First the spicy scallop, I honestly believe the sushi chef may have forgotten to add the sriacha or "spicy" part of the roll as it tasted like it was simply scallop and rice. Â Neither the Red Sky or Crispy Kin had any flavor and we used up all of our wasabi trying to add some kind of "kick" to the soy sauce to make up for the lack of flavor. Â We have NEVER left sushi behind before and had planned to take the pad thai home with us as left overs for lunch tomorrow, but ended up eating all of the pad thai instead.
I really do not enjoy giving negative reviews so I will end with saying I recognize every restaurant has bad nights and perhaps this was not their usual sushi chef or perhaps he was new or in training?? Â Also, the pad thai really was very good. Â The wait staff was friendly although we were left alone for long periods of time, though the restaurant was fairly busy and there were only 2 waiters from what I could see so this could explain it. Â We won't be back I'm sorry to say.
We were walking around the neighborhood in search for a late dinner on a Sunday night... Â From the outside, Kin looked pricey bc of their chic decor, so we peeked at the menu before walking in. We were pleasantly surprised by their affordability.
A very sweet waitress served us. Â She was all smiles even though we later realized that we came in right before closing time! OOPS!
The food comes out on sleek/modern plates and bowls, which I noticed bc this is not the norm for most Thai restaurants!
The see-u (stir fried noodles with beef, 7.95) was delicious! Believe it or not the meat-noodle proportion was heavy on the meat side! Â More noodles would have balanced it out.
Green curry (7.95) tasted great as well. Â The curry is thicker and richer than we would've liked, but we still enjoyed it! Â
Kin is like your go-to casual Thai joint in price and quality, but the ambience makes you feel like you're fine-dining! Â We plan on coming back again bc it's so close and so reasonably priced. P.S. It's BYOB.
I came to Kin with a large group for a bachelorette party this weekend. They accomodated all 11 of us easily, although their tables are set up with long benches instead of chairs, which can get annoying when you have 11 girls in dresses who are drinking and therefore have to make frequent bathroom trips.
Speaking of drinking, like many Thai/sushi places, its BYOB. They were very prompt with opening our bottles, with no extra corkage fee/charge. The service was attentive. They took our order immediately, were diligent about refilling the water and brought out ice buckets for our bottles of white wine.
I can't comment on the quality of the sushi, since I don't like it, but I had the yellow curry, and it was decent. It was thicker than I am used to and very sweet. If I went again, I would probably ask for it to be made spicy, since it was extremely mild, and I like a bit of spice in my life.
Overall, good place for a big group, BYOB is a plus, and my friends said the sushi was good. Additionally, the tab came out to $160 for 11 people, which was a-mazing.
I used to live around the corner from Kin and now I don't and I am so sad because it was my favorite neighborhood place. Â
The food here is really good: great flavors, the portions are right, and they have very fresh ingredients. Â The service is awesome. Â The servers are very friendly and prompt.
They have very good sushi, and a good selection of it. Â My all time favorite dish here is their pad kee mao. Â They use so much garlic it is amazing!!!
It's never too busy, I can usually just come in and get a table. Â Plus, it's BYOB and the prices are super reasonable. Â
Thanks Kin!
Ehhhh, came here for my best friends birthday, not impressed. Ambiance is overall nice, but I ordered a cucumber salad, it was $3 something for it, I stuck my fork in the mini bowl all but twice, and it was all gone. WHAT THE HELL. The dressing was great but I would have liked to enjoy it with the cucumbers for longer than 5 seconds.
Pad thai, not impressed. I had a few others at the table (there were 10 of us), who didn't care for their food. After eating the rice, one girl left sick, didn't make it to the after set. Food didn't sit well for her AT ALL. Sunny roll was so mini. SMH.
Not a fan...
Red Curry w/Chicken- Not bad flavor-wise. But it was a very thick curry. I like my curry on the thin side.
Sunny Roll- Good but not worth $13 at all. Smaller than I was expecting. Though I did get a big serving of wasabi and a moderate portion of ginger. More like a $9 roll.
Delivery was over an hour but my place of residence is kinda far-ish. But I was quoted about 50-55 minutes for delivery. The delivery man was nice.
I've always wanted to try this place...definitely tucked away and easily missed when driving by on Milwaukee. A friend suggested this place, so on a whim, we walked in without a reservation on a very cold Friday evening. This place was packed to the gills and I do believe we were the only table without a bottle of booze, as it was byob.
So being too lazy to look at the menu, I allowed my companion to order for both of us. Out came the below:
Edamame - Hard to mess up. Very good, perfect amount of salt.
Gyoza - Pretty tasty.
Panang Curry with beef and some type of beef with mixed veggies. Both pretty good, not high quality beef, but the veggies were fresh and cooked with the right amount of crunch.
Place is a little loud, and the service was kind of slow...I had to ask for more water twice. $40ish with tip, I believe. I'll definitely come again if I'm in the area....it just wasn't...spectacular.
Last minute we needed a dinner spot.
Sushi or Thai was on our  mind and KIN had both.
Perfect for all 4 of  Adults and my 3 yr old...it was kid friendly, BYOB (liquor store right next door) and GREEEAAAT service, ++ for kind servers and quick service.
We ordered everything from 3 appetizers, tons of Sushi and 1 pad thai with beef and some other Thai shrimp dish....everything was good but just a tad salty. Â All for $86 plus tip..NOT BAD AT ALL!
and to top if off at the end of dinner they greeted us with baby cupcakes-which was more than kid approved!
FYI: Â I see a new sign at 933 North Ashland...either they're expanding or moving, I can't wait, just one step closer to me.
I tried a few different things here all on the Thai side and Panang Curry is the way to go. Â I'm Korean so I love the whole rice and soupy thing. Sweet, spicy, and creamy... and the vegetables are really fresh and has a bite to them. Â The kaffir lime leaves really adds the aroma and citrusy flavor. Â Btw, why can't I find any kaffir lime leaves at the international grocery stores? This is a must try dish y'all! Â
Anyway, great service and great Thai food...next time I'll also try their sushi menu.
Today I ducked out of the shop down the street where my boyfriend was doing some work, and stopped in at Kin. Â Everything about this place is pretty much adorable. Â The music was something kitsch and up-beat and indie. Â The furniture and style made it look like that loft Down Town you wished you lived in, and the hostess greeted me with a real smile.
I kept my order short, (so I can eat with the other half later), and had a cup of Miso, an Avocado Roll and some roll with Salmon, Cucumber and Avocado. Â It was the perfect light meal for a cool, Chicago day. Â The place is decked out with Halloween decorations and before I left the hostess dropped off a cute little cupcake. Â Everything was delicious.
The people who work here love this place -- they were all smiles. Â That's pretty much always a good sign you will too. Â I did.
I love Kin and I hope they give snotty, Butterfly and Coast a run for their money. Â Kin is so polite and flexible. Â I had my birthday there and we sat there for 2.5 hours and drank like 6 bottles of wine and not once were we rushed to leave or pressured to order more food. Â They also allowed me to change a reservation for 9 people to a new time like 2 hours before with no trouble.
I have been there twice, once for Thai food and once for sushi. Â Both times the food was excellent and I am picky about Asian food as it is my favorite. Â Also the prices are reasonable and the ambiance is romantic and fun.
This is my new BYOB Asian place. Â Bottom line I would say that the sushi at Coast may be a tiny smidge better but...the service and ability to get a reservation is much better and there is no corkage fee. Â The food, service, flexibility, and ability to stay as long as you want beats Butterfly by a long shot.
Love this place! Â I wish i had discovered it sooner... Â For $15 you get an appetizer, huge main course (enough to take home leftovers), and a cute little mini-cupcake with your check.
Everything I have ever gotten here has been fantastic: Â Red Curry, Yellow Curry, Panang Curry, Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, Chicken Fried Rice, Crab Rangoon, Spring Rolls, Satay Chicken, and a few more.
Would DEFINITELY recommend if you're looking for solid thai/sushi on the cheap. Â and you can't beat BYOB!
oh, the service has also always been fantastic. Â your glass will NEVER go empty--be it wine, beer, or water.
I'm a big fan of pad thai, and until Kin opened, there wasn't a Thai place in my neighborhood that really hit the spot. I'm what you would probably call a "less meat-atarian", so I really dig tofu and other alternative proteins. Their tofu pad thai is *awesome*. It has the perfect amount of sweetness in the sauce for my taste, and the tofu is divine.
They also have the most amazing crab rangoon, and of course crispy tofu. I'm not a big roll person, so I haven't delved into that as much, but I've tried a lot of their sushi and sashimi, and have always been pleased. I don't tend to eat there very often, but every time I call for delivery or pick pick up they are super nice. Love em!
Went here with some friends last night for dinner, and it was just okay. Â We had the crab rangoon to start, which was pretty delicious. Â Had 6 maki for dinner. Â They were all pretty tasty, and the fish was very fresh. Â I really wasn't overly impressed with the specialty rolls. Â They were okay, but not really special. Â Price is comparable to Coast, and I definitely prefer Coast. Â
The service was very good - always filling our waters, and we were seated pretty quickly. Â I really didn't like the space...it was a little overly crowded and the lighting was weird (kind of too bright or something...?) in the Sushi bar area where we were seated. Â
I might order take-out from here, but for a nice night out for sushi, I'd rather go to Coast.
We went here on Easter Sunday since the place we planned to go was closed. Â We're glad we took the chance. Â
The restaurant has a very modern, Asian vibe, sort of reminded me of a spa. Â It is dark, but we were here at night during a thunderstorm and there was enough lighting for comfortable menu browsing.
The sushi was very good. Â Philadelphia roll, predictable but good. Â Rock and Roll roll - yowza! Â Awesome taste! Â Warm shrimp and spicy mayo, yum yum. Â
The service was great, although there was only one other table other than us. Â Our glasses were promptly filled and dirty dishes taken away.
Sadly, we got no cupcakes with our bill. Â But we will go back again.
Service has gone downhill, in a major way.
While the food is pretty good here, but certainly not nearly the best you will have in chicago, or the near vicinity for that matter (try Bob San Div-Wood) chances are unless your in a big group of people, you will not get the service or attention you deserve from the moment you walk in the door.
Note: in the winter  when its 20 degrees out you don't want to be that unlucky party that gets there before most of the other people do and gets seated by the cold dark door.
Speaking of dark, thats exactly what this place is, if your phone has a flash light your gonna want to whip that joint out at Kin to see the menu. I understand the need to be romantic but its very dark in there, matter of fact the only reason there is really any light at all is from the small sushi bar, and the lights from Milwaukee Ave. That out of the way, service has gotten slow, and you get the feeling that nobody really understands you there and they don't really care if they do or not, its gotten bad for sure, and hasn't been open that long, another note: Kin was better when it first opened.
The food got this place up to 2 stars cause the darkness and the service is just that bad. And while i hate to write negative reviews i have given kin a few chances, and had i wrote a review the first time i had been there, it would have been a favorable one back then, ie last July
Anyway food-wise, i know its cliche, but get the chicken fried rice, dont ask me why just do it and you will see what im saying, its probably the best and most filling fried rice ive ever had anywhere. Sushi here is sushi at most average sushi spots, but check out the summer roll and the rainbow roll, (im a specialty maki fan), also the dragon roll is pretty tasty, good flavor. Hamachi is also a good bet if your going for real sushi, and spicy tuna roll is also decent though, not very spicy. Chicken terriyaki is ok nothing special, Â I wouldn't go here and order chicken terriyaki again.. See, Usa Gi Ya down the street for that.
Anyhow I was asked if i wanted to go to Kin the other night, and i said no, because i was a little afraid to experience the horrible service we've had the last 2 times we have been there, there is an outside chance i will return with a group at some point in the future, and i will try to keep a good attitude about it, but if they disappoint again, you can count this one out foreva!
Your groupon for Kyu rendered unusable by the masses flocking to eat, similarly groupon-situated? Â Fear not, my yelp friends, I have a nearby solution for you.
Kim will be another place to add to your BYOB sushi repetoire, people, trust me! Â Dim, twinkling lights and dark benches round out this modern-feeling sushi spot on Milwaukee. Â Great for a low-key date or a night with the ladies, Kin will deliver.
We were rolling sushi-style the night we went, so no experience with the Thai cuisine. Â But for sushi, we dug it. Â
A brief summary:
-Aloha roll (tuna and mango) = YUM
-Summer (tuna, yellow tail, jalapeno, avocado) = YUM
-Spider = standard but good
-Emerald dragon = unagi + shrimp in a crunchy tempura with avocado = YUM
A kin salad was devoured as was perfectly hot and salty edamame and miso soup with nice big chunks of tofu (no wimps here). Â Oh, and there were a few pieces of sashimi as well, which were standard.
Service was friendly, our water glasses stayed full (essential when you're feasting on rolls with jalapeno, an oddly common theme here) and our bottle of wine was opened expediently. Â Our check was presented with three darling little (FREE) cupcakes which were the perfect amount of sweet to end our meal. Â Literally, it was the icing on our lovely sushi evening (cup) cake.
Sushi win!
I will start out this review by saying that I don't eat sushi - but that does not mean that I should not be able to enjoy a good meal at a sushi restaurant. Â Particularly one that purports to have Thai food as well.
Since we had a reservation, we were seated immediately. Â But then we were sitting and waiting and waiting for service. Â One of the bottles of wine we brought was a screw-cap (this place is BYOB) so we served ourselves some wine in the water glasses on the table after waiting for ages. Â Then the waitress came over and poured ice water into a glass that had wine in it. Â When we pointed it out and asked her to stop, in the process of explaining that the long wait with nothing at all to drink (including no water) is what prompted us to use the water glasses for wine, she got defensive and started trying to explain why we had to wait for so long.
When I complain about what the restaurant knows is bad service, I don't want an explanation because I don't care WHY the service was bad. Â I just want an apology.
The food was mediocre. Â The salad dressing was great and I ordered the chicken teryaki. Â While I appreciate that the chicken was not drowning in teryaki sauce, it was not very good either. Â Not good, not bad, just fine. Â
On top of that, it was incredibly loud in there and I left just feeling blah about the entire experience.
I never tire of sushi and my quest to discover new places. Even better, I never tire of restaurants offering me free food. The hubs and I received a menu from Kin in the mail with a tantalizing offer of a free order of egg rolls or crab rangoon with a carry-out or delivery order.
With a temperature in the teens, we ordered for delivery. I decided on a crunchy spicy tuna roll and a nama saki roll and the hubs went for the chicken pad thai. Both meals were delish, rolls were fresh and well made and the pad thai flavorful. The crab rangoons were a highlight of warm cheesy goodness in a crunchy shell.
Prices are fair and while we anticipated an hour, we received our meal in only 40 minutes. As Arnold would say...I'll be back!
I deem this place the BEST SUSHI in Chicago. Â The crazy dragon roll is my favorite. Â The sushi was so fresh. Â The wait staff is not bad. Â The place is BYOB, but not super cheap. Â If you do not like sushi, they have Thai food also that seemed pretty good. Â
In terms of quality of food, I have not found a better sushi place in Chicago.
Whats not to love? Â Sushi, byob, and cool atmosphere. Â
I've been there 3 times and the service has been very attentive. Â We got there tonight and we didn't have a reservation...we got there just in time because within minutes the place was packed. Â The sushi is fresh. Â I've had better but I still find it very good. Â You have to try the summer roll. Â Ohh my goodness. Â It's good for groups too but call a few days ahead in order to get a table.
I really wanted to like this place. Too bad.
We went on a Saturday night around 8:30...they were busy, but we got a table right away. I set the wine that I brought on the table and sat for about 10 minutes before anyone came over to me. Maybe the waitress thought she would wait for a minute because I was still waiting for my boyfriend to park the car, and was alone. Who knows--either way I would have loved to be sippin on my wine while I waited!
For app I ordered the cucumber salad and crab rangoon. Both were just ok. I wouldn't order the crab rangoon again--the won ton was hard and the filling was like an overload of whipped cream cheese, no crab :(
After the apps we had to wait at least 30 minutes for our dinner--too long in my opinion, it's not like we ordered a lot. We ordered a few rolls, one of which was 13.00 and supposed to have soft shell crab. Well, it did I GUESS, but it was all claw AKA no meat and therefore, not worth it. Their summer roll was decent and this is always my favorite roll when I order sushi.
They give you 2 mini cupcakes when you're through--which are pretty disgusting.
The decor is nice--they did do a good job with that, it's just a shame that the food was not worth it.
I will keep going to Coast and Kamehachi--they don't let me down!!
Jimmy! Jimmy! He's our man! If he can't get you to appreciate sea urchin testicles, no one can!
Kin is a new entry into the burgeoning Thai and Japanese combo restaurant market. Some of these combo-style restaurants focus more on the Thai cuisine and offer sushi as more of an ancillary item to the meal. At Kin, I get the impression it's quite the opposite. Here their sushi selections seem to dominate the menu with a breadth of nigiri, maki, sashimi, and combo plates to choose from. The maki offerings run deep; with over 40 different rolls to choose from.
When dining on sushi, often times I prefer to sit at the sushi bar over a table. Sushi chefs can be entertaining and are a great source of information about the sushi universe. Our chef, Jimmy, rocked! Â We showed up about 30 minutes prior to close, so I was a bit concerned about being rushed. Jimmy told us to take all the time we needed. That put us at ease, allowing us to work the menu a little more thoroughly.
For appetizers, we started with the Hamachi Ponzu and the Japanese take on Tuna Tartare. The fish was fresh. Both were good. Nothing entirely too special, but good. The tartare seemed under seasoned. We next picked out 4 rolls and a few nigiri pieces. This is when things went from good to excellent!
While waiting on our maki rolls, I asked Jimmy his thoughts on Uni, aka sea urchin testicles/ovaries. Most hardcore sushi enthusiasts love Uni. Jimmy was no different. His face lit up when he described how tasty uni can be. I have tried it on 3 previous occasions and have found my mouth and sea urchin testicles do not get along. Instead of debating with me, Jimmy took the bulls by the horn and whipped up a quick piece of fresh Uni on cucumber. He explained how Uni's flavor will change day by day and it is best on day one. Jimmy handed me the Uni piece (on the house) and away I went. He was right. That was by far the best piece of Uni I have ever had. The musky flavor I had experienced with previous Uni was not so apparent in this piece. Instead, it was cool, creamy, and not so bad tasting. Thanks Jimmy for helping me understand why so many people like putting balls in their mouths.
The maki rolls at Kin for the most part have traditional names, but are differentiated from other sushi places by a spice/ingredient or unique presentation. For our maki selections, we had the Crispy Kin, Tora, Summer, and Soft Shell Crab. The Crispy Kin is one of the house specialties and was delicious. You can find the Summer roll in many places, but Kin's version is probably the best Summer roll I have ever had. I think the jalepeno and cilantro added to the roll gives it a nice thai style kick; something that us spice lovers absolutely crave. The Tora and Soft Shell Crab rolls were good as well. I would order them all again.
For Nigiri, we had a couple standards of salmon and yellowtail. But they also had Shiro Maguro, otherwise known as white tuna, in the house! So we had to try it. White tuna is a very soft and fatty fish that generally does not even come from tuna. Instead, it is from the escolar fish. (Some restaurants will use albacore tuna, but it's not as delicious as the escolar.) The white tuna was near perfect. It has a lot of the similarities of toro, but it's white and does not melt in your mouth quite as fast.
Overall, my first experience at Kin was great. The food was excellent. And the service was great. I recommend paying Kin a visit. It is BYOB, so be sure to bring some booze if you like hittin' the bottle. (There is a liquor store conveniently located about 1/2 a block north on Milwaukee.)
There's a new BYOB sushi & thai spot on Milwaukee Ave and I am a fan!
It's a sleek design - with chrome tables and dark walls. The sushi bar is in the middle of the restaurant, providing fun viewing for those that want to be close to the action.
The service was very attentive and the food was fab! Ordered the Dynamite Roll (so spicy and wonderful) the Summer Roll and the Sumo specialty roll. The rolls are quite large and filling. My only food complaint was they were a bit liberal on the mayo...
I'll definitely be back to this new, wonderful addition to the neighborhood. And you cannot beat BYOB!
In a world of about a zillion sushi and thai places -- this place falls smack dab in the middle. Â Not fantastic, but not bad either. Â
Spring rolls were solid -- pad thai was average. Â Service was ok. Â On the plus side, it's a BYOB which makes me happy. Â I would go back but I'm not in a hurry to do so.
