Breakfast as I work.  Staff working fast.

good seating for it being in the middle of the main floor in the mall. :)  The pedestals though I think give it a cramped like feeling...but that in no way impeded service.

After a cold brisk walk from getting cupcakes, we had to pair this up with some coffee and this spot worked out perfectly. The non-fat caramel cappuccino I got was tasty. It was just the right amount of flavoring and temperature to my liking. The serve Metropolis Coffee here if you just want what the house is offering. The staff was quick and knowledgeable, and the prices are comparable to other coffee establishments. They seem to have a variety of food items in addition the many beverage options. I underestimated that a small kiosk like spot in the middle of a mall would offer so much. There are tables and chairs to hang out and sit at as well. It was nice to people watch.

King Café is King. Had a awesome bar-b-que salad from here for lunch 11/13/12 and it was great. The only thing was the diced/cubed chicken was not bbq-ed, hummm. At any rate the salad was pretty good. The ingredients were very crisp and fresh; the salad dressing was something new for me, cant quite describe it, but it was well blended with vinegar and seemingly thousand island; also on the side were the red & black tortilla strips (see photo, Montez G.).
King Café also offers a small bar height seating for about 6-8 customers who do not want to eat at their office/desk.

This is Montez G. and I recommend that you too should go here for lunch if you work within 2-4 blocks of the 900 Mich Ave.

Why: Staff most pleasant/efficient/professional, quick, inexpensive, close to noise free

Since I couldn't get to Metropolis for coffee, I thought this was the next best thing, considering I was staying across the street at the Westin.  It's a stretch to call this a cafe - it's really a kiosk in the middle of a shopping mall.  I didn't taste anything other than the Metropolis brew, which was pretty good.  Obviously, it's hard for me to seriously rate the beans, since I had no idea what I was drinking other than it was just coffee.   But for regular drip, it was a far cry above starbucks.

Used to stop here in the AM on the way to work at the Oak Tree (which was a nightmare, but thats another story). Good latte. Pretty cheap at $2.25 too, especially considering the building that it's in. Ive tried the cinnamon muffin top and a vegan scone as well, both were pretty good. Staff is friendly as well, so that's a plus. I would recommend it for a cheap Gold Coast coffee spot.

    love this place!

great snacks. the chocolate filled crous. is my favorite. The coffee is also very rich tasting. People are nice. I just wish it had more seating and not so loud.

I love shopping at 900 North (it houses the Bloomingdales where I get my MAC makeovers for special occasions, Williams-Sonoma, L'Occitane en Provence, Coach, Banana and the big J Crew with all the party dresses and more).  King cafe is more of a kiosk than a cafe, but there is ample seating with tables scattered around it and on each floor of the mall there are comfortable couches to sit at and sip a latte.  Their coffee is good and I have had some tasty baked goods here too (sweet loaf?  yum).  I am a sucker for a good cafe au lait though and their is tops.

King Cafe is my go-to place for a quick lunch of breakfast, or sweet afternoon pick-me-up.  The staff there are always helpful, friendly and willing to answer neurotic questions regarding the food.

Everything I have eaten from there is tasty and fresh.  It isn't exactly cheap, but consider the location and the quality of the food I think it is a good option.

I recommend the chicken tortilla soup, scones, cookies, coffee and yogurt parfait.

The coffee is relatively good here; I usually pick up a cup in the morning on my way to work. Good soups and salads, too, and unsweetened ice tea, which I like and appreciate. Their vegetarian chickpea patty sandwich is messy and a bit odd yet extremely delicious (and huge). They also have an excellent lowfat banana muffin and very good freshly made egg sandwiches, with or without bacon, cheese, etc.--and, wonderfully, these egg sandwiches are available all day long, not just for a limited time in the morning, as almost everywhere else in the universe (apparently). Sometimes I get an egg sandwich for lunch--perfect.

My rating is based solely on value. I experienced King Cafe in my office building through Fooda and was excited to have a Tuna Salad Sandwich. For $8.00 you get 2 pieces of untoasted wheat or white bread and tuna salad made with mayo. No cheese, no toasted bread, no tomato or even ROMAINE which it states on the sticker it has on it.... No worries, they sell a bag of chips for $2.00 when you can get the same chips 10 feet away in a vending machine for $0.85. The sandwich itself was good for how plain jane it was, but c'mon- King Cafe get real!!

Really nice folks, but my cappuccino was disappointingly average despite the use of Metropolis Coffee Co.'s espresso roast - the potency was there, but no depth was to be found and it just tasted like a slightly more concentrated (mediocre) latte.

I'd love to like this cafe more than Starbucks. I had some fancy flavored latte whose name is escaping me now. I don't forget much so that must say a lot about it....it was just okay. However I would give King's other offerings another shot.

Love this place for a quick bite to eat.  The chopped bbq chicken salad is a go-to lunch item for me.  They also do a great lunch deal for $7.25 where you can pick 1/2 a sandwich with a cup of soup, pasta salad or fruit salad. I would suggest the butternut squash soup + turkey bacon sandwich. Yum-O!!  The hot drinks are ok - nothing to write home about. I would grab an iced tea with your lunch instead.

Love their coffee and their cookies.
This is a terrific sandwich, snack spot to take a break from shopping.
Take out or sit at a counter or a little table in the atrium of 900 N Michigan.

Reading yelp reviews about metropolis coffee being so good, I thought I'd give it a try.  Coffee was just ok, and was cold before my bus got off Michigan Ave.  It was no Starbucks.

Despite the slightly slow service and no-nonsense Batista's this place has a great location and a yummy vanilla chai. Plus they have a huge menu of snacks, sandwiches, and treats. I mean, any coffee place that has grilled cheese is "A+" in my book.

Pretty good coffee, pretty good service...I'd avoid this place in general on weekends but more because of the other patrons and general crowds of the place than the actual coffeeshop.

Never mind the coffee. If you're here for lunch, have the grilled ham and cheese sandwich, chicken tortilla soup or Mediterranean wrap -- all excellent! For breakfast, their breakfast and croissant sandwiches are also good. Just note that the hot sandwiches are made to order, meaning you'll have to wait five minutes or for them to be prepared.

I find myself here pretty often as it's directly across from my office. It's pretty basic, with the exception that it is a coffee shop in between a Gucci and a Michael Kors shop. So, that's a plus. I guess.
The last time I was hung over I went in for some much needed OJ. I asked for large, they only have small so I ended up paying $7.00 for about 18 oz of oj.
It is pricey, and for some unknown reason they only have plain bagels.

First off, and most importantly, they make a GREAT cup of coffee.  They brew Metropolis, and as a result they have the best cup you can find in a 3 mile radius.  Plus the folks are nice, the prices aren't too much for the area, and they have a excellent variety of good quick grub... the tuna salad sandwich, the pasta salad, and the tofu salad are all dang good (also - it's a relatively rare place downtown that has vegan offerings).

I was at 900 N Michigan yesterday with a bunch of girlfriends and we decided to stop for some coffee.

One of my friends ordered an Iced Coffee (which is on the menu) and was rudely told that they do not do Iced Coffee anymore.  When she pursued the question further the guy rudely replied that the menu is wrong and she can have an iced americano.  The man making the coffee filled the cup up with ice and only half full of coffee.  When she asked him if she could have more coffee in her cup...he filled the other half with water!!  My other friend asked if she could get the caramel frappe in a light version.  The guys scarastic response was "I don't know what you mean.   I guess if you mean light...I guess we could use skim milk and sugar free syrup."  After both of these siutations...I opted for a bottle of water.

Awful--Rude employees do not make up for a great product!!

    Yuck.

My fiance and I went to go and have breakfast there. Ordered the Mushroom croissant and Greek yogurt with granola and berries which ran us about $8... a little pricey if you ask me.

The croissant was mushy and flavorless - completely devoid of the characteristic flaky texture. The Greek yogurt was fine but please do not advertise that it has berries in it when there are little to none - to be frank, you can get a better berry parfait at the Corner Bakery Cafe without the almost $4 price tag.

Would not go there again and would advise others to stay far away.

Best chocolate croissants I've ever had. They are warm and soft and just the right amount of chocolate (not oozing like others I've had). If only they were a tad bigger...

I was out running errands on my lunch hour and picked up the pre-made Chopped BBQ Chicken Salad to bring back and eat at my desk.  For a pre-made $6.00 salad it was surprisingly fresh and flavorful! The portion wasn't huge, but the quality was good. I was there after 1:30 pm - there was no line and the service was quick and pleasant.

However, the paper menus provided are TOTALLY WRONG and there isn't a correct menu displayed anywhere. I ordered the veggie sandwich (portobello, red pepper, fresh greens) and was given a weird hummus patty with radishes and cabbage. . . wha?  I asked one of the employees and his response was "Oh yeah - those menus are wrong"

4 stars - BBQ chicken salad
1 star - gross veggie sandwich and lack of correct menu

The lines took forever.  I wanted to get one of those large containers to take multiple cups worth of coffee, but they didn't have that.

The coffee was solid though and the location is great.  You can get your caffeine on and shop away.

I've been spending loads of time on the East side these days, so of course, gotta get my Metropolis coffee fix on! I'm really into the visual aspect of King Cafe - sleek and modern with what looks to be a bamboo wood used throughout on the chairs, counters and bar stools. They've even got a nice looking site along with their menu. Overall good look.

They have a vast selection of espresso drinks, smoothies, sweet treats, sandwiches, salads and soups. Next time I'm trying out the tomato fennel soup. I've had their mushroom croissant which was a nice quick bite, that satisfied my hunger for a time. The staff is quick, attentive and friendly and the prices are good for the Gold Coast. I'll be back soon!

If you're shopping on Michigan Avenue come here for coffee. They serve metropolis coffee here and they always make the drinks well. They have good cookies and although I've never eaten a sandwich or salad here they look decent. This and the nordstrom espresso bar are the way to go. Better than starbucks

    Quick?  Check
    Tasty? Check
Bloomingdale's 200 ft away? Check, check...you get the idea

King Cafe is a little kiosk in the middle of the Bloomingdale mall, something you would normally look over when you want Lunch, but STOP, its surprising delish!!

I highly recommend the BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad, as I've had it twice in the last week. Crisp lettuce, corn, beans, tomatoes and a super yummy BBQ ranch dressing, oh gosh...I might turn it to 3 times in a week if I keep talking!  They also are a regular coffee/latte/tea stop with all the regulars. I really like the Blood Orange iced tea, sweet and super refreshing.

Check this place out the next time you need a quick hunger killer while shopping on the Mag Mile

If I frequented King Cafe as much as I would like, most likely I would be the size of th 900 N. Michigan mall.  Their cookies are amazing.  So far the double chocolate holds the medal as my favorite.  And I don't even fancy chocolate that much, let alone, double chocolate.  They also carry Tea Gschwender teas which I am quickly becoming addicted to.  I tried the ham and cheese panini and wasn't too impressed.  It tasted rather bland and had very bitter spinach on it.  I would be very willing to try their maine lobster roll sandwich sometime.  Anybody want to treat me?

I was having a particularly frustrating shopping day on Michigan av. earlier this week when I popped into the 900 N. shopping center. I thought maybe a coffee would lift my spirits, but in actuality the wonderful barista did. I think her name was Mari? Regardless, very sweet and makes a great vanilla late. Definitely better than starbucks in service and quality. Thanks for the pick me up!

They serve Metropolis coffee and that's good enough for me.  Blazing hot and brewed perfectly.  Hell, I will stand in any line for that.

I like the setup and how everything is very cool and uber-mod.

The Caprese sandwich was good & fresh, but dry.  I wish it had come with maybe a little of balsamic drizzled on it or something.  The salads were gigantic - really enough for two people.  They also have something called Spicy Hot Chocolate which I need to try, but not now.  Too much of a reminder of winter!  Pastries looked good too, and I was surprised at the vegan offerings.  This place is so much better than the old Corner Bakery that used to be in this spot and much healthier than the evil Ethel's directly behind it.

The coffee is really really good here, but it seems like it takes forever.  They are slow.  The staff is NOT very friendly either, but what do you expect really?  Their pastry selection is pretty small, and nothing is that tasty.  I will say their cup of eggs on the breakfast menu, with truffle oil, is large and a fairly good deal (fairly) at $5.  Most lunch items are pretty pricey, but a must-try is the Butternut Squash Soup.  I don't know what their recipe is, but it's wonderfully spiced and makes for a nice little warm lunch with a piece of crusty bread.  Mostly, just go for the java though - especially if you work in the building b/c you get a discount.  Just make sure you're not on a time crunch b/c you will wait in line, and for your drink too!

I'm so glad that they opened a nice cafe in the main floor/lobby of 900 N Michigan.. I was not a fan of the overpriced (yet not yummy) coffee/hot chocolate etc from Ethel's.  We had a caffe latte and a hot chocolate here, and they were both cheaper and better than Ethel's.  The coffee beans were really fresh -- Yes, I was staring at the beans in the espresso machine.

They also serve gourmet "fast food" (sandwiches, salads), grab-n-go items, which looked yummy.  They have a tomato and fennel soup that I'll have to try next time.

We also sampled a raisin biscotti, which was so good - it was warm, soft, and tasty.

One note about the coffee station - they didn't have Splenda (only brown sugar, white sugar, and sweet and low, none of which I wanted).  However, you can go to Ethel's and grab their Splenda!

As you walk into the 900 N. Michigan Ave. building, the King Cafe is immediately front and center. It looks like a coffee and sandwich stand. But looks can be deceiving. Step up close enough to see the pannini, croissants, sandwiches, and HUGE salads in the window. Resting on this display case are cookies and other sweets. They also offer delicious soups (vegan, vegetarian options), freshly-squeezed OJ, coffee drinks, and soft-serve frozen yogurt (chocolate, vanilla, or swirl). The prices are above-average, but it is the magnificent mile. And the building offers FREE Wi-Fi, so it's worth it. This is definitely a good place for "gourmet to go" for breakfast, lunch, or just a break!
