You can smoke inside. Instant loss of stars. I know it's a bar - but, that's just how it goes for me - if you can smoke inside, you can't get a "good" rating from me.
Bison burger was good, served quickly, went on a week night when there was a hockey game, wasn't too crowded - seems like a real "Community" type bar without quite the "dive" feeling.
A lazy Saturday afternoon stop at Krueger's Bar because I'd been told the fried pickles are life-changing. Although spears not chips, the heavy and chewy coating (I'd guess Parmesan-based but a place like this doesn't get into flowery ingredient detail on its menu) won me over as a mid-day snack (and held up beautifully to two tall gin & tonics).
Not a dive - far from it - given the lush tree lined University City location and well dressed, middle age crowd. Really a neighborhood bar and grill with an overly animated web site. The gruff wait staff only added to my overall enjoyment. Better yet I cracked a smile on the older gent's facade who served us with an initial huff.
It's what I do. I bring the love.
Ate my entire appetizer size order of "toasted" ravioli (own these gems as fried), but would have liked the traditional marina (which accompanied) along side a dip through melted butter and grated Parmesan I've heard legend speak of.
It's a little corner bar on Forsyth between downtown Clayton and Washington University. Â This is still a smoking establishment.
They have a number of specials - both daily specials which can be viewed on their website and other specials. Â Today they had hot tomales, chili, and beef brisket. Â But I went with what I knew and what the previous two reviewers mentioned as well - the burger.
I had the bison burger ($7.50) with soft cheddar (add 75c). Â If you get the bison and they ask how you want it cooked, I would recommend medium. Â You don't want bison overcooked. Â The soft cheddar topping was tasty, but man, does it melt/slide right off your burger. Â It takes a bit of maneuvering to keep your sandwich together. Â (Using my best memory on the prices)
You get a choice of side, and I had the fries. Â They were surprisingly very good for "bar and grill" fries. Â I made a mixture of mayo and ketchup to dip them in.
One friend got the brisket and liked it. Â Another friend got the reuben and was surprised how tasty the corned beef was, so that really stood out.
Good service, good food. Â My burger, fries, and soda ($2) cost me about $12 after tax, not counting tip.
A nice neighborhood place, staff friendly and the burgers excellent. I also like the fish and chips. I prefer to sit outside in the summer, but be warned its very smoker friendly inside and if your a non-smoker, I'd avoid the place, very poor venting of smoke and you'll leave stinking of it.
Review Source:Solid neighborhood bar. plastic dartboard, friendly patrons, and just a nice place to grab a burger and relax on the street.
Beers a fairly cheap ($3 - $4) Burgers with fries run about $6 - $8. Not too much on the menu, burgers, wings, bar food, but bar food done well.
Nothing about the place will wow anyone. But if you want to relax with a few friends, or just need a place to watch the Cardinals game, this is as good a place as any.
