I hate to say it but the ONLY thing good about this place is the location and that being said if its summer and or warm outside... the food used to be good here a LONG time ago, now its got traffic so it doesnt care i guess. i will never go back after giving it a few more chances. its so close to my house so wanted to like it! i promise, but la hacienda is a wayyyy better option my fellow BR neighbors.
Review Source:This isn't going to be the best Mexican food you've ever had, and it's not particularly authentic. However, the food is good, maybe above average. I was happy with my meal, but it wasn't incredibly memorable. I would go back if I want Mexican again.
Their queso blanco is pretty good, though, and there are, of course, neverending chips. The service is good and the restaurant is clean.
This has easily been our favorite Mexican Restaurant so far. Â I suggest the nachos la piedad or the three marias. Â The cheese is great and the chips and salsa are as well. Â The staff is friendly and you can tell there is a great atmosphere. Â We've only been in Indianapolis for two months and we have been to La Piedad about five times.
Review Source:Pros: Mexican in Broad Ripple, outdoor seating, decent food
Cons: Poor and slow service, crowded
My boyfriend and I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Â The sign stated that we should wait to be seated, but this place didn't seem to have a hostess. Â We found someone to seat us, but I saw others waiting for a while before a server noticed they were standing there and seated them. Â
Chips and salsa were placed on our table immediately. Â We waited for a while (5 minutes?) before our server took our drink orders, and about the same amount of time for them to arrive. Â He took our order and then we waited about 20 minutes for food to arrive. Â When it arrived, we noticed that he forgot the queso we ordered. Â It was no biggie, so we didn't say anything about it. Â
I ordered soft chick tacos and my boyfriend for the chicken quesadilla. Â It was decent, not great and not terrible. Â I'd go back, but I wouldn't crave the food or anything. Â When our bill came, it was around 10 bucks. Â Seriously, two people can't even eat at Wendy's for 10 bucks anymore so I was pleased.
All in all: Decent food at a good price in a great neighborhood. Â Come here to eat outside on a nice day.
Boring and tasteless food. Not sure why it's busy half the time we walk past it.
Tex-Mex can be done right -- but La Piedad's stuff is clearly frozen then microwaved. No passion or flavor in this food. It's about as Mexican as Fazoli's is Italian...
The guac had NO avocado in it! It looked like sour cream with green food coloring... The salsa was so watered down we didn't eat it -- and I freakin' love salsa!
Go to Taco Bell if you are desperate.
I don't want to do this. Â I really love the food, but when I went in there this weekend, I felt that something was off. Â The service was awkward and rushed. Â When we got the bill, it seemed a little high for what we ordered. Â They changed it immediately when we went to question the price which is great, but also a little concerning since they asked no questions about what we ordered. Â
They had overcharged us 33%. Â
So, yeah the food is great, but check your bill, you might be surprised.
Popped in on a busy Saturday. Sat inside since the patio was full and we were starving and didn't want to wait. Â Service was very prompt. Â Free chips and salsa. Â Both average and tasing a bit like you could find better at the grocery store. Guacamole, came out super fast, and obviously pre-made, runny mushy and just ok. Â Had one enchilada smothered in sauce and one hard taco, both with ground beef. My companion had a grilled salad. Â Overall lacking in flavor, very bland food. Â Not authentic, and sorry, Â it's just not good. Â SInce it was so crowded we had high hopes, but yet another Indy Mexican restaurant fail.
Review Source:I rarely eat out for Mexican food so I'm definitely not an expert on the cuisine. Â I just don't crave the food like I do other cuisines and so I'm not going to pretend that I have any ability to rate the quality of the food in comparison to "authentic" Mexican. Â I have enjoyed the food here, though, and have had no complaints about anything I have been served. Â As I get filled up quickly on chips and refried bean, I rarely order one of the big platters. Â My meal is always pretty cheap here. Â
The patio is wonderful. Â Large and along a quieter side-street in Broad Ripple, its a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon, if you are fortunate enough to get a seat. Â This place is a favorite among locals and I have had to move on to another restaurant on more than one occasion in place of an evening here.
The place doesn't have a liquor license, or at least it didn't the last time I was there. Â There are beers available along with a "margarita" made from wine. Â I won't make fun of the margarita. Â If its what's available, I will drink it, and, on a hot afternoon, it's absolutely delicious. Â Cheap food, great patio, and drinks. Â What more does someone need? Â Perhaps the 10% off coupon you can score by going to the restaurant's website?
Quaint little restaurant in the trendy part of town. Crowded tiny place crammed with people and tables. Feels very much like eating in the middle of a busy airport with about the same level of friendliness. How was the food? It was hard paying attention when being bumped, elbowed, and pushed around. Waiters literally dropped the food on the table without saying a word. Next time, I'll opt for a nice relaxing dinner at LaGuardia or Chicago airport during rush hour.
Review Source:Probably my new favorite mexican place in town for some straight up, no frills mexican food. Not a lot of seating space, so plan ahead accordingly if you have a large party. The chips and salsa are fantastic. Tried a couple of other places, but I think this will be our stand-by when we want mexican.
Review Source:I tried La Piedad on the recommendation of an old co-worker who said it was "the best Mexican food in Indy"; I disagree. Once you put salsa on my table that has the spice level of ketchup and is the same consistency as my water, I'm done. And to all restaurants: please stop covering your burritos with bland red sauces, they are not fooling anyone. Their saving grace is the location. If I ever find myself here again, I will sit myself on the patio, enjoy the sun, and have a margarita.
Review Source:I enjoy the free chips and delicious salsa. Â I ordered the Nachos La Piedad with a combo of chicken and beef -- love the bite-size meats. Â The chips of the nachos are crisper than those for the salsa. Â Love that.
Ladies' restroom had interesting shelving that was parts of a table.
One dislike was the cold air that came each time the front door opened.
This time I had a coupon for 10% off total bill.
In my group of friends, I sometimes feel like the outcast because I don't have rave reviews about La Piedad. Â Frankly, I would rather go to El Rodeo. The food is decent and the prices are right but I just have nothing to rave about. Â I was even excited the last time I was going to go because some one told me about their "house hot sauce". Â I have no idea what they were raving about! Â I would have preferred Sriracha!
They do have a great patio in the summer time but make sure you plan on getting their early or waiting a while to be seated because people aren't quick to give up their seats.
La Piedad to me was the best Mexican food in the city. It was always tasty and very consistent. Here lately though the serivce has been terrible, no one wants to wait the tables, refill chips, drinks, etc. Â I'm not sure what the deal is but it has left me seeking my Mex food crave somewhere else. The food is still good so if service doesn't matter to you check it out.
Review Source:Britt and I hit it up two weeks ago and if you ask her and if she remembers right, I said it was the best Mexican I have had RIGHT behind El Camino Real in Portland...it was really good...however, at 630 rush on a Friday...it was the size of a matchbox, loud, stuffy, and not intimate at all...i like to eat in peace and that...was a rushed meal, but so so good.
The imported beer selection is cheap and the fajitas had aton of flavor, they were slightly smoky from the paprika, had a bit of kick from the chili powder, and not greasy or over seasoned . Â The servers were busy, yet very friendly. It was killer, and its now our go to Mexican joint in the city.
I've had it with this place... never going back. My son and I went to grab a table outside last Summer, and some rude worker barked, "Go stand in line!" There was no reason to even say that... there were 5 open tables, and 1 COUPLE standing in a "line." I walked off... even my 7 year old son questioned this guy's behavior. I've had bad service there before (when our party was sitting at the table a little too long, the head owner snatched back up the bill from our table, and charged us for the chips and salsa!). The food is barely mediocre. Â We only went there for the atmosphere anyway. Forget this place.
Review Source:Just moved to the Broad Ripple area recently and have eaten at La Piedad a few times. Â I think it's well above average for American-Mexican cuisine and is very reasonably priced. Â They make the basics well (i.e. taco's and enchiladas) and their queso & chips are great.
My only gripe is the service; they are not good about refilling chips and drinks, especially if you sit outside (it is almost comical how they go out of the way to avoid you at times!). Â But the staff is friendly and generally does a great job.
La Piedad is alright. The food is pretty good, it's about what you would expect from a place like this. I normally wouldn't bother to write a review about such a forgettable place, but there's this common misconception that everyone has about La Piedad. Whenever La Piedad is brought up, the consensus seems to be that they're cheap and give huge portions. This is not true. Your food will run you around 9-10 dollars, and the portions are average. So look yelpers, stop spreading these demonstrably false rumors.
Also, here's something else, people are so happy to exclaim how fast you get your food. Why is that a bonus? It's like when I see advertisements for bars they claim to have "The coldest beer in Indy". Yeah, well, I don't think there's anything wrong with the temperature of beer at the bars I already go to. This is a sit down place. I don't need to leave within five minutes. And if you're picking something up to go, you could just call it in.
Look, La Piedad is fine, but seriously overrated.
I can't figure out why this place is always busy. Â Runny food, it's always crowded and they couldn't possibly fit anymore table in the place. Â
The food is over-priced and definitely not authentic. Â I guess it really comes down to location on this one. Â
Avoid if you can. Â try Cancun on Keystone by the Krogers for great mexican and drinks!
I had high hopes for La Piedad. Â I am always looking for a new Mexican restaurant in town. Â The location is great, although challenging to find some parking. Â The service is hit or miss. Â One time we had decent service, then the other time it was horrible and I think the server was really trying to ignore us. Â Also, when we went with our child we definitely were treated poorly and got the distinct impression kids are not welcome. Â Not sure I will go back due to this since our son goes with us to eat. Â It gets very crowded during dinner time which is normally a good thing, but they don't seem to manage that well and there is no foyer to wait so people are standing over your shoulder giving you the "stare" to hurry and finish so they can be seated. Â There are many other Mexican restaurants in town that have just as good of food, but with much better atmosphere and service.
Review Source:Great location and awful food. I like to call this La Jolla syndrome.
Salsa is watery and does not stick on a chip. Beans are grey. Food is not authentic. Authenticity aside, grey beans and salsa water are not what I look for in a restaurant. Everything I've ever ordered from this restaurant could only be described as wet or runny, actually.
My chile relleno which would have been cheaper to get a la carte, was full of runny, flavorless queso blanco, and sans any flavor of the poblano. The chile relleno dinner only came with one chile and with flour tortillas? I could not think of a reason tortillas were wasted to come with this meal. Enchiladas verdes  are flavorless and runny everywhere except the chicken, which is dry and crumbly. There is only one kind of hot sauce here, and it's not even stellar!
Also any kind of Diabla item is missing from this Americanized menu. Gimme gimme some spice!
Would I come back? Maybe for margaritas, maybe if I was as hungry as I was on Saturday. It's definitely not worth the time to come to La Piedad and expect good food when there are so many great Mexican restaurants outside of Broad Ripple.
La Piedad is in a great location right on the Monon Trail in Braod Ripple. I love their outdoor patio in the summer (especially since they've added the awnings). They have an extensive menu with, in my opinion, some of the tastiest salsa I've ever had. I'd buy it if I could.
The margaritas are decent, my husband loves the carnitas, and I find their food generally pretty good. Â The flan is usually a little overdone, so avoid it if you're looking for something authentic and "like you remember it."
They are blazing fast and you can get in and out (assuming there's a table available) in 15 Â minutes, if you needed to.
Quick, friendly service. Â The food is not fancy, but it is delicious, filling and consistent.
(Savings tip, as if it's not already reasonably priced...If you shop at Marsh, be sure to keep your receipt. Â There's a coupon for $5 off a purchase of $25 or more, or a free appetizer with the purchase of 2 combination plates.)
Having just moved back to Indianapolis from Dallas, I'm on the hunt for a great Mexican restaurant. Â
This place was OK, better than La Jolla in my opinion. Â My test is the enchiladas. Â They were just OK, they were a little puny and I thought they could have been filled with a little more chicken. Â The sauce on top was good, though. Â The rice was a little on the bland side for me.
My favorite part about this place is the patio. Â Great deck outside with awnings to cover you from the sun. Â The service was really good too, incredibly fast and courteous.
First time here - for lunch - bean and beef burrito. Â Always try the burrito as the first time test (just like pad thai at Thai restaurants). Burrito passed the test. Â Food was very good and service was fast.
The deck - under canopy looks like a great place to unwind with a beer - $3.50 for a bottle - can't beat that with two sticks.
Lunch is less than $10 with drink and tip - now that's value.
Room for improvement - more heat on the hot sauce!
Another great find in Broadripple.
I went to this place once and was seriously impressed. Â The food was DIRT CHEAP and good at that. Â I got the fajita platter and it only cost me like 7 bucks. Â I dont think there was anythign on the menu for over 10 bucks. Â Beers were cheap and the food was great. Â Enough food to fill you up but not leave you feeling over stuffed. Â
The place is very authentic, everyone working in there is definitely of mexican descent and the place looks like its run by family. Â The food is spot on in term of authentic mexican flavors and I was very happy with the entire meal.
The location is awesome, right on the Monon trail, and they have an outdoor balcony you can sit on and watch the joggers and dog walkers go by.
Location, location, location. Â I will repeat some of the other reviewers. Â The patio overlooks the Monon Trail. Â (Bike rack out front, but no pets allowed.) Â It makes for a lovely dining experience when the weather is nice. Â I've never been inside.
The food is average Tex Mex fare. Â Free chips and salsas and generic combo meals. Â Service is fast, but nothing special. Â
Read closely: La Piedad does not have a full bar. Â Beer and wine only=no margaritas. Â You've been warned.
I had high hopes for my first trip to La Piedad......porch atmosphere was great, got a cold cerveza, service was freakishly fast, love the chips and salsa but then came the entrees and my hopes plummeted like the stock market.
Maybe it was what i ordered? Maybe not though because my ol' (lovely) lady didn't fair well with her dish either. I'd recommend you steer clear of the fajitas (i had ones with chicken, shrimp and skirt steak) and possibly hit up tacos, burritos or something simple like that.
Probably would go back again but mainly for drinks and good people watching outside!
Indy's most authentic Mexican food--in Broad Ripple. There are much better Mexican restaurants in different areas of the city, but this one happens to be among lots of other restaurants.
The chicken and shrimp fajitas here are reasonably priced at $10, but they're dry and tasteless. The salsa is better than most of what you'll get in Indy. The rice and beans are pretty good.
Hey, I'm from Texas.
Mexican food in Broad Ripple? Steer clear of that place on the strip and avoid the big chains, hit up La Piedad back in the bellows of the Ripple.
They have a great patio and the food here blows away the other places, best tostaguac ever. The staff is way better here than the other places and the local cliental is cool to chill with.
I'm not really sure why people rave about this place for its quality, though I can only attribute it to the same reasons people vote for chain restaurants in the annual 'Best Of' awards in local print publications. Indy's residents have a 'handicap' when it comes to food awareness, as we live in the chain capital of America.
However, there is nothing bad about the food at La Piedad. I would say it's more that the location is so money that the food is somewhat secondary. Nestled just off the Monon Trail on the north end of Broad Ripple, La Piedad is in one of the more perfect locations in Ripple for the crowd who likes the (just) off the beaten path spots. The food here is decent, but not great. It's pretty typical Mexican-American food. You're not going to find innovative, or truly authentic. Rather, it's your basic meat-bean-rice-cheese combos, though, they are prepared well.
The lunch specials are cheap, the beer is cold and great on a nice, sunny day, and the porch is the only way to roll on the nice days. Certainly, there are not a lot of great Mexican restaurants in Indy, so this may actually be one of the better ones. I will give them credit where it is due for the quality of the ingredients, which seem fresh and tasteful.
