Cool place, good service, ok food. Two at the table loved it and two of us didn't. It's the kind of place where they don't have salt on the table because they assume they season everything perfectly.... Not so much. Some of the food was just bland:-( I will give it another chance though. Go see for yourself.

I'm sorry, I've tried twice now, and I just don't get it.

The location is good, the atmosphere is nice, the service (Jason at the bar, both visits) is very good, and the specialty cocktails are fabulous. Who knew creme de violet was a good idea? Not this girl, and yet the Subterranean martini was yummy!!

But the food is just not good. The first time, I ordered the mahi and shortrib dumplings, mentioned in another review as underwhelming and mismatched, which is my summary as well. The fish was properly cooked, but that's the nicest thing I can say. Tonight, I thought I would try again, this time sticking to dessert. The tarte tatin crust somehow managed to have both a weird chewy texture, and a burnt aftertaste. The apples themselves also had a bizarre texture, as if dried apples were rehydrated or some such? To his credit, I think Jason noticed that I wasn't really on board, and he checked on me a couple of times, but how do you politely say to a server: "I want your kitchen to do a better job, just in general."?

Why don't they have halves on here? 3.5 is my official rating.

Took the wife out for her birthday last Friday as she picked it out herself. I was not really sure what to expect other than a light slightly expensive dinner.

I will start with the good: As we walked in, we were greeted promptly and were sat before our reservation time. Kind of made me wonder if we needed one at all but I digress. Back to the good stuff. As we made the journey to our table, we walked past the bar where you could see out to the patio area out doors. This kind of makes me want to go back to visit in the spring and fall to enjoy the fire they have going out there. The server we had seemed to know what was on the menu and was able to tell us about anything they had. We started with the Venison Carpaccio which should have been eaten in about 4 bits which I assume the pieces of bread were their to lead us that way. For dinner,  I was sold on the NY strip that was not for the faint of heart. I love meat but wow this was a lot. The wife got the pork. While we both really enjoyed the flavors, we had to have them boxed up. So portion size was at least equal to the cost of the items. We also shared a side of the Cali-flour as well which could have been a meal in and of itself. It was only okay in my opinion even with it being made in a way I had not been presented before in my life. We also ordered a dessert of toffee bread pudding. It was also very large and could have been shared with 4 people if needed much like the side dish we ordered. It was a really pleasant way to end the night on that note and probably overstuffed. We sipped on some cocktails through out the evening that were really tasty to say the least. Probably the most interesting thing I had of the night. I recommend starting out with those before you move onto the wine list.

The bad you ask? Well for starters, I would expect a beer menu of local brewers being the biggest focus with a place that seems to be big on buy local. We were never offered any such thing and I might have down the delightful cocktail I ordered a bit faster to order one or two if it would have been provided. Granite I could have asked for one but really a place that promotes local should continue to do so when I get in the doors. The wife's meal was topped with a wee mac "stout" Scottish ale. We pointed it out to the server we had that it should not say stout that it isn't actually a stout but a Scottish Ale. We don't know if it was a typo or if the Chef didn't know. If it was the Chef who made the mistake, shame on you. I hope it was just a typo. It is a bit nit picky but at least know your ingredients.

Overall, I thought this was a good fresh idea for dinning out. I hope to return to try a different cocktail the offer up or sip on some of the selection of Scotch while sitting out on the patio. Might even ask if they have a beer menu but I fear I might be disappointed there.

We really wanted to love this place, but it was a big disappointment all around.  We love the fact that this is an independently-owned non-chain offering a seasonal locally-source menu.  The atmosphere is nice when you walk in also, but it went downhill from there.  There were 11 in our party, celebrating friend's birthdays, and we were sat at a tiny table crammed in the corner (you know, where 6 people have to get up if the person on the inside has to go to the bathroom) and we were so cramped everyone kept bumping elbows while eating.  The service was prompt, but the servers kept dripping water and wine on us when refilling glasses, and we even had to pass down plates to each other because it was so tight.  The shrimp cocktail was huge and my wedge salad was delicious; the chef used pomegranate and haystacks, very unusual and good.  Several people in our group got the mahi, it was served over beef short rib dumplings in a sort of au jus beef broth.  The pairing was just odd and didn't go well together.  I got the pork chop after our waiter sold me on it, and it was a big disappointment.  It was a very large bone-in chop with good flavor, but had a large ring of fat on the edge and some inside, and the meat was so tough my steak knife could barely saw through it.  Another person in our party got the bone-in ribeye and said it was average at best.
If it were just the food that was average and everything else was excellent, we'd probably give it another try, but that was not the case.  There are so many other nice places to eat offering consistently good menu items, and when spending $200 on a meal (per couple) you expect to have excellent service and great food.  As well as not being crammed into a tiny table like sardines.  Overall LHK was over-priced and disappointing, we won't be going back anytime soon.

OUTSTANDING food, service, atmosphere. By FAR the best place I've been to in Indianapolis to date.

QUALITY food. The  chicken cooked under a brick with gnocci had flavors that were balanced, not over salted, and the flavor just melted so well.

The toffee bread pudding - a true addiction.

    Excellent french press coffee.

Will most CERTAINLY return, with MANY friends.

We checked out Late Harvest Kitchen during Northside Nights (a restaurant week/Devour Downtown type of promotion where there was a $30 prix fixe, 3-course menu) after meeting the chef and chatting with him at Dig-In.

I must admit: I'm sad that we haven't been there before.  It was THAT good!

Late Harvest's menu changes daily based on what is available.  Local is the name of the game, plus tons of excellent fresh caught seafood (prior to this the chef was at the Oceanaire).

Service was spot on.  The server offered us 4 or 5 wine tastings when we discussed that we were interested in a bottle.  (Bottle prices start in the $30, I think...super reasonable) and the by the glass list is extensive. Additionally, he highly recommended the prix fixe menu as a great way to try several menu items.  See, I really, really appreciated that.  Several places we've been to during Devour/Northside Nights/Chow Down Midtown treat the special menu like a red-headed step-child, which makes you feel like you shouldn't be ordering from it!  It's a promotion!  So promote it!

We had some of the best dishes during our meal....fried green tomatoes with crab, potato encrusted trout, creamy polenta, and the signature sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

LHK is definitely a 'special occassion' restaurant for us, but I can't wait to go back and try more of the chef's local, seasonal creations.

I've eaten here before, but never felt compelled to leave a review.  Now I've just got to chime in and say (in response to Ryan F, below) that I support any business owner's right (even obligation) to confront parents of unruly kids.  I've been in a restaurant once that was made so uncomfortable by screaming and running kids that a fellow patron finally kneeled down in the aisle to inform these kids that "This is not your rumpus room at home!" - met with restaurant-wide applause.  Hopefully Chef Nelson's initiative was met with a similar reaction; at the very least, I applaud after the fact.  Oh, and the food's good, too.

I will definitely go back to Late Harvest Kitchen.  I dined there a few weeks ago with a friend and had some great dishes and some ok dishes.

We split an app, an entree and a side.  The corn, tomato & chanterelle salad was my favorite dish of the night.  Very seasonal and perfectly seasoned.  We had the chicken as our entree and it was solid.  Kind of dry as other reviewers have pointed out.  Our side was the asparagus with a grilled egg on top.  This was pretty tasty!

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the entire place (especially the bar).  We sat in the bar which I loved.  Our bartender was our server and he was very knowledgeable and attentive but not overbearing.  The wine & cocktail list was nice.  We sampled a number of different drinks and all were really good.

I look forward to going back & trying some different dishes.

I heard about this place from a friend of mine who lives in Indy.  I decided to give it a try with a couple of friends of mine.  We arrived around 6-6:30 p.m. on a Sat night and there was already a wait.  We eventually squeezed into the bar area.  They had pheasant on the menu so I decided to give it a chance.  It was pretty decent considering how difficult it is to make sure the bird isn't too dry or tough.  I shared some poutin with my guests which was good as well.  I went a couple months later and decided to try the pork chop (steak).  Wow, that was excellent....very thick and hearty.  One would almost believe he/she was eating a steak.  The place is rather small for an upscale, full service restaurant and the bar is tiny.   It is advisable to make a reservation to ensure no wait.  Being on the north side, it is more easily accessible to the folks who are coming from the north (such as myself).  Parking is free and plentiful.

My co-workers and I decided to try this restaurant while we were in town on business. The waiter was very helpful and informative regarding the menu. I ordered chicken the chicken. The chicken was VERY dry and resembled shake and bake. When I commented to the waiter that the chicken was dry his response was that white meat is dryer then dark meat. Instead of taking the feedback for the chef I felt like i was being patronized. In general over priced from the drink menu to the entree's. My recommendation would be to bypass this place and go to Grill 52

Went on a week night with a group of friends.  The service was pretty slow although the restaurant was not overly busy.  My food was pretty good, although for the price I expect a little bit more as far as quality.

One in my party asked that their steak be cooked medium but it came well done,   She sent it back and by the time a replacement came out everyone else at the table was pretty much done and the sides (shared) were cold.  Oh, and the steak was raw!

Manager was asked to bring fresh sides but offered free dessert for the table instead.

Very disappointed. Bad service. Overpriced food. Recipes off season (felt like a winter menu despite almost summer). Strange, heavy handed seasoning...Underwhelmed. Won't return or recommend. I'm a foodie and I eat at great restaurants all over the world. This one needs a lot of help.

A foodie sort of menu (by Indianapolis standards) and everything is well prepared. Upscale without coming across as stuffy. I have had dinner here 3 times, if you dine there in colder months, hope that you are not seated near the fireplace as it can give off enough to heat to make it too uncomfortable to sit close to it.

All of the menu selections that I've had or the people I was with have had were excellent.  The staff seems to know the menu well and does not hesitate to give recommendations or answer questions.

I haven't had a chance to try the bar yet, but it looks nice, even though it's very small.
Definitely check this place out if you are looking for something "new" in Indianapolis to try.

Wow-  that is all I can really say!  The only downfall to this place, is the small bar- which I am sure most of the time isn't a problem, but we had a large group meeting there, and with two other tables : actually sat in the bar:  it made it so we poured out into the walkways.
Caviar pie: sweetbreads: ribeye and the plethora of desserts that we were served amazed me.  I will be back and with others who enjoy-
The best praise I can offer is that with a group of about 20- usually you will have a neigh sayer or two in the group and everyone was raving about this place!

Bar only review: I'm in love - this place is gorgeous! Dark wood gives it a homey, warm tone and feel. Intimate bar that looks out over the patio and their flaming boulder (just go see for yourself). Jason, my barkeep 2 nights in a row was Cheers-worthy but with so much more class. :) He had great wine and appetizer recommendations, chatted us up and truly seemed to be glad to be there. My second night there he and his counterpart mixed me my new favorite drink, the "Passport". VODKA, DOMAINE de CANTON, BASIL, GRAPES, LIME. I especially loved the little spear of grape and basil that made the drink look as good as it tasted - smooth, refreshing and incidentally so not like alcohol you could easily do something entirely irresponsible if you had too many of them :) Take your DD I say and have a few!

Really wanted to love this place.  Had heard good things about the chef and loved the repurposing of the old Smith & Hawken space - but it was a HUGE disappointment.  Appreciate the fact that they have unusual items - for Indianapolis - but unusual doesn't trump preparation and covering things in olive oil doesn't make things delicious - it just makes them oily.  I'll give it another go this summer when the patio is open, but it will take that long to get the taste and feel of the oil out of my mouth.

We had a nice server, but some of the menu items were sold out @ 7 pm on Sat, which happens.  Do not order the Yellow tail, it was so full of bones and was not very tasty.  There was quite a bit of ambient noise. I do not know why places do not use more sound deadenning materials in their construction.  It would really add to the experience to be able to hear people at your own table.

Very interesting and imaginative menu with choices not typically found in the many chain restaurants and this is wonderful as Indianapolis lacks these more individual offerings. Ambience and service was good. My main course was cod done with asian style flavors and noodles. Quite tasty. My wife's main was a German style pork schnitzel with spaetzle and dill? The meat was fine but chef needs to get away from the heavy bias to fried foods; the spaetzle was we think also fried and this is not the way spaetzle is best done-typically just boiled and with a nice dill sauce, so the dish was in the end over oily. We noted the whole fish on offer was also deep fried, and all the sides on offer were fried or crispy something. We wanted some fresh vegetables as a side and maybe some non-fried starch (ie not just chips) but not available. Overall, the restaurant has got great potential and its nice that the menu tries some different dishes. We would go back and look forward to supporting a local, non chain restaurant.

Overall a big disappointment. The menu sounds great until it arrives at your table lacking in both salt and moisture!
