Nice Local Bar that has solid specials. Every wednesday nights 1 dollar beers.

Great people! mixed with all cultures/backgrounds and nice spot to watch sports.

I prefer this spot over Village Pourhouse

Also-- Solid Hot Wings. 8 out of 10

Awesome dive bar in Morningside Heights with a down to earth vibe. Grab some friends, a table, a pitcher (or three) and enjoy some great drunken conversation. Don't forget to order the tater tots with cheese (perhaps some of the best drunk food on the upper west side). The service here is also awesome. The bartenders are super attentive and friendly, and the owners can often be found tending bar.

NOTE: Unfortunately, I was here recently with a few friends and three of us had our credit cards stolen (and racked up several thousand dollars in fraudulent charges). Not the establishment's fault, but definitely mind your purses.

Very casual and collegiate.

I'll try it out more and see if it grows on me.

The crowd was an very diverse mix.

We ended up talking to some Columbia math majors for a little bit.

I liked that it was inclusive and people were open to meeting strangers around them.

Or maybe they were just more drunk than I realized.

Pretty cool dive bar...nothing to phone home about.

Yeah this place is definitely not on my A-list. Quick drink and I RAN! The atmosphere is very casual and almost unkept. Place is very tiny so it gets crowded with no seats. I just thought some of customers were too "hip" for their own good sprawled out on the chair like they were eating and drinking at roman palace trying to hit on some girls. Yeah not my cup of tea. Yes it is cheap but PBR is cheap.

Casual, fun, neighborhood bar. From what I heard, this place can get PACKED being a few blocks south of Columbia University but since it was between semesters, it was all locals.

Cheap drinks, eclectic music, and a fun atmosphere. How can you go wrong?

When ever at my sisters place in Harlem I make a trip here,

I love the tater tots, the pbr the 1.00 drinks on Wednesday.

Women, men, everyone is drunk. Why because its cheap and its good. Never had a bad time here. The bartenders always give great conversations and the regulars (whatever that means). They try there hardest to remember my name. Instead of the "the black dude with the bowtie" so that is a plus

Come here to get drunk, and meet people. It's the NY way

The beer and wine are cheap, the happy hour specials are daily, the menu looks like a Thundercats comic...great bar food. Music is awesome and its not too loud to hear conversation. Have the teriyaki wings, enjoy the fries... Just note, while they have table seating and bring you your food, you will need to order your drinks and grub at the bar.

Amazing prices for happy hour and bar food and pretty tasty stuff too. I still want to try their burger, but have been really happy with the sampler platter and grilled cheese... I've been here twice and will definitely be back. Sort of hit or miss for the bartenders -- the first time got someone who was super nice, the second time I felt like the guy didn't care at all, walked away before I could finish ordering and seemed really impatient with me in general.

$1 beers on Wednesdays. Can't go wrong.

Gets crowded with college kids but what are you going to do?

I think it's essential for people to have a go to dive bar where you can get cheap drinks, watch a game, and just chat up with friends. Lionshead is that haven for me. it spoils me with its drink specials and its tater tots. Perhaps just as importantly, it allows me to hang out with a giant captain america shield overhead. Lionshead is one of those places where I don't want others to invade and turn it into a frat party, but it really is too awesome not to share.

I'm going to make it short. This spot is great. The wings are good and the beer is cheap. Yummy yummy wood chuck cider! This is a must go.

Lion's Head is a great bar with great specials.

I have soccer games near here on Saturdays. They have $1 drafts from 1-5. On top of $1 draft they have $0.25 wings as well. Does it get any better than that? Not at all the prices you expect to pay in NYC.

On Saturdays it can get pretty crowded (who doesn't like $1 drafts). Other times I have been its been easy to get a table. Its got a good atmosphere to sit and watch a game or enjoy some drinks with friends.

Well, it's about time I started writing reviews after being to so many places, and why not start tonight, with my oh so glorious experience here.

Backstory is that I'm bored in my room and sick of watching the game in my room, so I look up a close, good bar on yelp and head over there. I get there, the place is nice enough, and one of the bartenders notices me pretty quickly. Apparently Wednesdays are $1 beer nights. I'm in luck. I order one for the meantime and think about tipping later on, when they've deserved more of a tip.

One quarter later, I'm done my first beer and head up to the bar again, looking for another. They make me wait a while, fine. It happens. Apparently 7 minutes later, the other bartender takes my order, then oddly beckons me to say something. I'm intrigued. What's on his mind?

He asks why I think he made me wait 7 minutes to take my order. I genuinely have no idea. He answers emphatically, raising his hands as if he just hit the winning three of the game, that it's because I didn't tip. Then he walks away.

Wow. Really? Okay fine, I didn't tip on a $1 beer. I feel odd about giving you 100% tip when you've barely done anything for me. But that doesn't give you the right to call me out on it like that, right?

This place rules! Super friendly staff, great owners, awesome cheap bar food, and cold cheap beer. This is my number one bar in NYC and the best place for The Hornrims band to relax after rocking at practice. Great wings, Taylor ham sandwiches, tater tots with gravy, and corn dogs. It's bar food heaven.

I've been here a few times because it's one of the cheapest places near school. They got pretty good daily specials:

http://www.lionsheadnyc.…

Went once for 25 cent wings and dollar draft beers on Saturday. The place was packed. Wings were good as usual, but I guess when they say dollar draft beers, they mean bud light or rolling rock in smaller cups. O well, I don't expect much for dollar beer. Not so much into the crowd, but they got one of those digital jukeboxes with tons of music, so you can just play whatever you want to listen to with your friends and ignore everyone else.

If I were Norm, this would be my Cheers. I have loved this place for years. It's comfy (sometimes too crowded on wkends, but not douchy). There food is tasty and healthy if desired. (calamari-unbreaded-thank you). The staff is also really nice.
I also love the carefree je ne said quoi of the guys who leave their hockey bags outside leaning up against the windows. Such trust. Such naivete. So many questions I have about if anyone has yet been robbed...

One BIG complaint. Why show sports if the weird lights hanging over the bar act as an obstruction. Super annoying during the NCAA. Also annoying, people who sit at the bar and don't watch. Take a table on the otherside-why are you trying to deprive me??!

Great cheap wings, cheap beer.

Sometimes it's a little too loud and the crowd can be a little rough. Also, it gets slammed sometimes, suddenly, by traffic from the hostel a few blocks south. But usually it's pretty low key.

Some arcade games, board games, enough TVs to watch sports.

They also have one of those internet jukeboxes for when the TV volume's off.

I stopped by lions head for the first time the other day and wasn't blown away, but it's a pretty decent bar with cheap drinks. Everyday they have some type of special, like Friday was $3 Harpoon pints. The food looked like standard bar food, wings, nachos etc.

If you're in the neighborhood, it's worth a stop for a pint and to watch a game

The only reason I don't give 5 stars to Lion's Head Tavern is because I'm waiting to get thrown out of here one night, then it'l be 5 stars, because every time I go here I probably act in ways where I deserve to be thrown out. Shots, beers, forget to pay, all that stuff. The guys at Lions Head are the best.

Tots...tots...and more tots. I'm ordering tots covered with cheese and gravy and its ambrosia, and I'm talking to some guy who looks like George Clinton from P-funk, while listening to Slayer and Night Moves and Back to the Hotel, downing PBRs and cheap whiskey shots, finishing it all off with an awesome mac n cheese.

One night at Lions Head I was sitting at the bar and I set my burger plate to the side at the bar because I was done. It had some leftover fries and bits of tomato and lettuce and bun, and some young dude started wolfing down the scraps like it was the first meal he'd had in weeks and his last meal on death row. Awesome!

The crowd here is diverse, a little edgy, and fun. Everyone shows up to be themselves and not the image conscience bs that can happen elsewhere. Its real.

Awesome laid-back sports bar, plus the best burgers in NYC

The crowd is a mix of locals, Columbia grad students, and club athletes. The bar is far enough from campus (and checks IDs frequently enough - sorry kids!) that it's never overrun by the fratty hordes [save that for The Heights]. This was my go-to spot as an undergrad to hang out and have some beers and burgers with friends.

The layout is spacious for the number of seats, a long L-shaped bar with plenty of seats, good if you wanted to go alone and watch the game. It's never too crowded, and there's a section with tables in the back where you can accommodate almost any size group, from 2 to 10.

The staff is awesome-- several of the bartenders have been there forever, and the owner is there almost every night. They're friendly in an honest, no-holds-barred, NYC kind of way. I saw someone order a mojito here and get laughed out the door.

Finally, the food itself is reason enough to come here. I've had friends order it for takeout. The burger is the best in NYC. It is the Platonic Form of Juiciness! They have a tiny kitchen here, so you're going to wait, but they take great care. You can tell no one's been poking the burger or smashing it with a spatula.

This place is really awesome. Great space, plenty of room, Lots of seating. I went on a Tuesday night at like midnight, so my experience is probably not reflective of the overall atmosphere, but I REALLY love that they have $3 pints of ShockTop on Tuesdays. SO HAPPY. :D

The drinks are good and strong, their cheesy tater tots are amazing drunk-food, and the bartenders truly cannot be beat - they are so friendly! I personally love being called things like "girly" and "chica" by people who are making my drinks.

Oh, and when I went there was only one bartender, but he was so cheerful and fast and prompt with what he was doing it really seemed like he was 3 people. No idea who you are man, but you rock!

I've lived in the area for five years now. Every few weeks I definetely have to stop into Lionshead Tavern. Why?

1. I'm orginally from Upstate NY, and this place has good wings. A slight crisp to them, and great sauce. They can go real hot on the wings to if you desire..from Nuclear to Ass Burner (yes those are actual temperatures)

2. When is the last time you had Corn Dogs? When's the Last time you had tater tots? EXACTLY. The corn dogs are excellent..great batter. And if you get the tater tots ..get them alittle extra crispy...MMM MMM MMM (if you wanna be extra naughty get em with cheese , chili, or gravy on them)

3. I like to drink Miller High Life Bottles..and they serve them for $3.50 a pop. That's what I'm talking about. (FOR ALL YOU PBR drinkers $2 CANS)

The crowd is pretty diverse..from your Columbia College Kids (you know the crappy tippers), to old neighborhood locals, to 30 somethin professionals like me. And you know what...everyone gets along.

Its may appear alittle dark when you first enter...but have a seat..get some food, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

KITCHEN IS OPEN LATE...atleast til 2am..maybe 3 I forget..but cmon seriously how nice is being able to get some great bar food that late. EXACTLY

This bar has been a home away from home for me ever since I turned 21 (which is two years ago yes). They have pretty good drink specials, and the atmosphere is very cool. It's near the Columbia University campus so a lot of college kids are here, but I've also noticed a stellar 30-40 something crowd too (they are the ones I mingle with, what can I say I like an older guy).

They've also got food, a plus for when you've had a little much. Small dishes mostly like tater tots and french fries. I'm a sucker for the corndogs (see what I did there?).

They've got cheap beer and an awesome staff. Where do you go wrong there?

This bar has so many awesome things on the walls. I feel like I'll have to come here a handful more times just to digest it all.

Chill space. The tv screens brighten up the room.

Amazing drink deals. Some of the cheapest beers in the area.

I don't think I'd like this place when it's more crowded, but my time there was fun!

This place is certainly a good cheap bar for a quick hangout and bite to eat. With deals like $6 pitchers and $10 for a plate of 20 chicken wings (of ~10 diff't flavors) the Lion's Head is a place worth frequenting.

It's not going to knock your socks off, but it is nice inside, with wooden tables and chairs, and a wooden bar with sports decor and a fun arcade machine in the middle of the floor. It is medium sized, to accomodate a decent sized crowd, the bartenders are courteous and the place is very close to the 1 train.

Perfect for starving college kids and young adults.

I used to go to the Village Pourhouse if I wanted to catch a game or just hang out. No more. This is an excellent dive bar with a diverse clientèle (although you'll find plenty of Columbia students here on any given night.) I've only ever eaten a grilled cheese here, so my impression of the food is limited, but you can get a damn cheap beer here, especially the specials or during happy hour - another reason I'm fleeing across Amsterdam to come here from now on. There are plenty of TV screens, in view of both the bar and the seating in the front and back.

Also I can't praise enough a place that has a sit-down Galaga machine near the front door.

I do have a small complaint about the service, which was pretty slow. I had to wait a pretty long time to get a beer refilled. But the bartender was friendly enough when she did serve us, and with drinks as cheap as they were, I'm not going to complain.

Great laid back spot. What lured me in where the 20 cent wings, because I love wingsss...

The place is not that big and can get really crowded, but they have some seating towards the back of the bar as well as some in the front.

They also have boardgames you can play while enjoying a cold one.

Cheap clean dive bar. Crisp draft beer. Tater tots. Good tunes. Decent crowd, and though the Olymics were playing and viewed closely by a large portion of those in attendance, the place had none of the annoying sports bar flavor we encountered later on in the eve at the Pourhouse.

Two thumbs way up for the Lion's Head Tavern. (boo, fail for the Pourhouse.)

I live walking distance, so automatically this place gets a bump up in my book. Of the four times I've been here, I've gotten a pint of free Guinness (for 'racing a friend' in a pouring contest), $1 pints during happy hour, and $3 pints every other time of good, non-PBR draft beer during standard "high-price hours". I estimate I've spent about a quarter of what I would have had I gone to any other pub in Manhattan. Plus, because of the proximity to Columbia, it's got a young, rad crowd, yet it's not so close that there are only students. And the bartenders have always been super friendly and non-douchey - a rarity in Manhattan.

What's not to love? Good beer. Good location. Great prices.

I was sad. It was happy hour. This place was open. I got a couple of drinks, some chicken wings and had some good conversation.

Being slightly intoxicated and full, I left happier than when I walked in.

Plus, these folks are near where I live, so 4 stars!

So I have a special place in my heart for the Head, they do host lots of rugby functions and have the best atomic wings and cheesy tots you want to sober up for, but... They can get wicked crowded so you must be strategic about your timing. Avoid any Jets games for sure, it will be knee deep with depressed dudes who will not be nice when you try to weave your way to the bathroom or the bar.

Also, they do serve cider! However...they used to have it on draft and now only serve bottle of Woodchuck at an increased price. Less cider, higher price, just not as nice and cannot be purchased in pitcher form. Perhaps consider that using kegs will net you more money and less waste?? Just a thought. The cheesy tots almost make up for this. Almost.

This is the bar that's right downstairs so of course I am a fan. Drinks are always strong and cheap! They show all the NFL games so I am definitely looking forward to waking up and going down to watch my team!

Since I go here so often, I find that on any given night the crowd can be totally different. On Monday for example, the bar is totally full of frat boys. On Wednesdays, it was the neighborhood people, mix of tough looking Spanish/Black guys and ghetto girls. Weird!

Overall, the bartenders are nice and once you lose track of how many drinks you have had, they seem to as well. I clearly remember one night when my friend and I had to have had about 15 drinks between the two of us and the tab was $40. Yay, for Lion's Head.

Ass-burners.

That's the level of heat I chose for my wings. These wings are fried then tossed with a coat of traditional buffalo sauce and then tossed again into a habenero type sauce and then encrusted with chili flakes. I'm actually involuntarily sweating as I yelp about them.

My sports-fiend friend watched first in amazement, then amusement, and at last deepening concern as I slowly and painfully ingested my outrageous order. The bar was dark and smelled like beer brewing and french fries frying. It's a very spartan establishment with a few stools here and there but an obscene amount of HD tellies and drink specials. There are hooks underneath the bar for your shiznit, nice touch.

The enormous 7 dollar pitcher of YuengLing we ordered wasn't enough to quench my thirst and the obliging bartender refilled my water glass promptly or whenever I stuck out my tongue and made fanning motions over my face.

Afterwards, I went into the grungy restroom and washed my face. It was red and tears could not stop streaming down... I looked like I had just given birth.

After watching my friend's sports team lose hard (sorry) it was time to peace.

I had to lie down immediately when we got back home.

Those wings were sooooooooo fucking good.

It's a dive bar. And it's close to school. I can't complain.

There are darts to play and tables to sit. Good place to meet friends.

The drink selection is pretty good and we got two beers for $8 (during happy hour). The UFO and the UFO raspberry.

They lose a star for selling (on tap) beers with fruit.

This bar is a nice place to go for a low-key evening with your friends to chat and chill. I like that I can dress super-fancy or super-not and not worry about the dress code or have sketch dudes come up to me. It's also a nice change from the pretentious places in Manhattan or the places that charge you an arm and a leg for a beer or a shot.

Oh yeah, in the warmer months, the windows open up into a patio-ish setup and the place serves as a cafe. Also has free wi-fi in the afternoons. Or so people tell me.

There is a lot to like about this n'hood pub near Columbia U. For one thing, as others have noted, the wings are pretty damn good. I usually order the large (which comes with 24) and can polish them off myself.

The bartender/owner Gust is an awesome guy, as well, and he serves some cheap beers ($2 for PBRs!). Also, there are several flat screens tvs, all within viewing distance of wherever you're parked (ie not a bad spot in the house).

I'd give it five stars but am deducting a point because too many Red Sox fans feel they can sport their colors at this place. Not while I'm trying to eat, please. This is my n'hood pub.

As we were leaving, the bartender stopped us:

"Are you ladies leaving? because that man over there (he gestures) wanted to buy you a drink..."

me: "Which one?"
bartender: "That one."
me: "Which one?"
bartender: "That one."
me: "Umm..what shirt?"
bartender: "Sitting in the old man's chair."

and with that totally opaque answer, we left. And so our dating mis-adventures in NYC continue...

Okay, so let's get this straight. If you want a dive bar with a sports bar like quality to it, this is the place. The beer is ridiculous cheap (look at all the other reviews for the specials). Additionally the wings are fantastic, but don't order them to go; they're not quite the same. Let me specify, the wings are drier and crunchier, which is the way I prefer them. If you're looking for moist and soggier wings get them to go. They have a decent amount of screens, and they're always games on.

My only drawback is that even for a dive bar, I feel this place is a little dirty. Floors tend to be pretty sticky and so do the counters. Apologies in advance for this one, but the caliber of women that go to this bar isn't spectacular either.

Just go with the boys for a good time and you won' t be disappointed.

I think i have yet to enjoy the loveliness that is $2 PBR and baskets of wings at Lion's Head because i felt a bit like i had walked into the living-room of the popular kid's who didn't invite you to parties when you where 13....
Ok to be fair - the people where friendly enough, but there is DEFINITELY a local crowd and without th time or the liver-space to devote to becoming one of them at present, i may just avoid, unless i get a golden ticket....
