I'm so glad I took a chance on this place! Â The outside does look a little sketchy but I'm finding that In DC, that's usually a good sign! Â The bartenders are attentive and friendly and the food and drinks are great and very reasonably priced; even the patrons are super cool (myself included). Â I've never sat at the bar without striking up a conversation with the person next to me.
Don't come here if you're looking for fancy cocktails or a DJ but it's definitely a good time.
It saddens me to know that I've lived within 3 blocks of this place for the past 6 months and my first time going in was last night. With that being said, I LOVED the Looking Glass Lounge, and I consider myself a tough bar critic! The bartender Amir (sp?) was so cute and paid attention to exactly what we wanted. The wings were great and cheap ($5 wings on Sundays)... They have GREAT specials everyday! Kudos!
I definitely see myself becoming a regular here!
Looking Glass Lounge-every time I ran by it I thought that can't possibly be the place that a few of my friends have told me about--it looks so...skeevy!
One day my housemate and I were trying to get an early dinner. The place we originally chose was closed randomly, so we ended up here. What a delightful surprise. Great drink selections, the nachos were fabulous, the Sunshine Chicken Sandwich and a grilled swordfish sandwich were ridiculously good. We also saw other dishes that looked appetizing and noticed they had a lot of great specials--not necessarily included on their online menu. We wanna stop by again for a whisky flight or for a happy hour to see what else the kitchen can handle.
Overall a pleasant surprise and way bigger and nicer than we anticipated (and cleaner!)
I get off work at 6pm, so by the time I've made it back into the city from Maryland, it's usually too late for me to make most of the happy hours in the city. This is where part of my love for Looking Glass comes in. Bars that have their happy hour go until 8pm really make me smile. Just because I work a little late doesn't mean that I too shouldn't get to enjoy delicious beverages and snacks and low prices.
I've never had anything but good service there, and while I've only eaten the chicken fingers, they're delicious. The staff responds appropriately to customer requests, which is nice in a city where sometimes it feels like restaurants think it's the customers pleasure to eat at the restaurant, rather than the other way around. The selection of beers is good as well, I can always find something that I'm excited to drink.
It's the right kind of divey to be just my style--the kind of divey where the bathrooms are clean but the floors are just a little sticky from the night before. I can't speak for how raging the party is on a Saturday night, but I've heard it gets crazy busy. Weekdays are generally the good kind of busy. You don't feel like you're the only guy at the bar, but you can still find a seat at it.
I've been hearing ravin' reviews about this place and so I just had to check it out considering I only live a matter of blocks from here. Â The place is a little bit cramped in the front, but hey, what bar in DC isn't. Â But the back has a good amount of space to chill with a dance floor and DJ. Â Speaking about DJs, the one spinning the night I went was pretty dope. Â He was remixing 90s classics and kept them coming with a blend of today's hits. Â
The drinks and food was actually on the pricier side. Â I ordered the chicken panini and it was decent. Â We had a few nice concoctions thanks to the flexibility and creativity of the bartenders that night. Â The servers were hella chill as well which I definitely appreciated.
What I actually liked most though was that everyone there was free to do whatever floated their boats. Â There was a table playing a board game, there was table that was reenacting their own version of Les Miserables, and there was a table that just sat in the dark (wait a minute, that was us). Â
Overall, great experience and definitely looking forward to coming back.
I love this place.
I haven't had the food nor care to really, but Looking Glass is seriously a party on the weekends. Â
Each time I've gone here, there is always a poor or a great decision being made. Â Both with great results. Â Seriously, its a great time. Â
Its a dive, but that is what makes Looking Glass awesome. Â I also love the beer garden outside. Â Great place to catch some air after getting all hot and sweaty inside.
Maybe I'll try the food here, but that shouldn't be the main reason why you come here.
Super divey and wonderful. The staff is friendly, the outdoor patio is wonderful and you can even bring your dog. The customers are typically those who live nearby and you can go with no one or a bunch of friends and be guaranteed to have a good time, enjoy some good beer, and chill out.
Review Source:They have a really good menu with a variety of offerings and fair prices. Â I love the garlic fries and the pork wings, gf usually gets the grilled cheese with bacon. Â Good happy hour deals that change daily.
We've attempted the trivia night a few times but the questions seem to be fairly esoteric.
This place is really on point for the neighborhood. Â It is our favorite bar.
Four years later, I am finally over Temperance Hall enough to say that I really like the Looking Glass. So much, that I am there at least once a week. Â This is one of those local spots where anyone would feel comfortable, it is always a great mix of people. My 70-ish parents love it!
I usually head down to the outside patio/bar area. The service is friendly, the beer selection is great, and the food is pretty good. Â The burgers are pretty fantastic and the fries are super yummy (get the shoestring). It is metro convenient. I would totally recommend Looking Glass to anyone.
The place looks like a dump, which made me very reluctant to eat here. In the corner of the bar, someone left their laundry basket with clothes in it. That was kind of suspect.
Anyway, came here with my sis and we ordered brunch. The Home fries were so good! I think they were the best home fries I ever had. The breakfast burrito was light and filling. I really enjoyed it.
I would come back here again for a laid back breakfast.
I'm wavering between 3 and 4 stars.
The good:
1. The beer selection
2. The decor
3. The outdoor patio
4. Happy Hour
The so-so:
1. The food
2. The prices
The not so good:
Trivia Night. It drags and just doesn't have quite the energy that some other places have.
I prefer Red Derby, but Looking Glass isn't bad. Definitely worth going to if you're looking for a chill place to grab a drink.
I've been to LGL twice now, and for the second time in a row I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
-The place is nice and chill. It's not too loud (or quiet)... the atmosphere is great.
-The beer selection is pretty darn good.
-The menu is great! Especially great for those of us who don't eat meat.
-The garlic fries are phenomenal. They top my french fry list.
-The location is very convenient to the Petworth metro.
-The service is fantastic.
-Tuesday night trivia is really fun. Very well run... can't say that about every trivia in town.
Hooray!! I'm so glad to find another five star joint.
There really aren't any problems with The Looking Glass. Upstairs they constantly have dance parties and other rowdy events. Downstairs is a very mellow atmosphere where you can just grab a beer and talk.
The bartenders downstairs always have the best soundtracks playing and I have had more free drinks from that bar than I can remember... Not that the number is so large, just that I don't remember them.
I have never tried their food, but I'm sure it is pretty good. Also, the outdoor patio is great! I'm not a smoker, but plenty of people enjoy the easy access to the patio from downstairs.
The Looking Glass is my go-to bar in Petworth. I find some of the other reviews interesting: complaints of $15 for two beers, being crowded, bad food. Â I don't really agree with them.
The prices here seem pretty normal for the area. You can go to a crappy bar and pay $6 for a crappy beer... or you can pay $6.50 (or whatever the cost is) for what is most likely a pretty decent beer at Looking Glass. No complaints from me! Going out in Washington DC is never a cheap night. Â The bartenders are usually pretty attentive and friendly - no complaints there, either! Don't be afraid to ask for their recommendations!
The food has always been pretty darn good to me. Never terrible, not amazing. (again- it's a bar.) The average entree is probably closer to $10. I've been here countless times, and they did mess up my order once, BIG time. I was pretty bummed about it, but they brought me fried pickles on the house (my favorite!!) and won my heart again.
After living practically down the street for a year, I have realized that the Looking Glass is totally packed on weekend nights mostly only in the winter! I'm assuming this is because it's too cold and no one wants to venture out of the neighborhood. But in the summer/fall, I've been to Looking Glass at 11:00 on a Saturday night with a group of friends and almost always get a table, or a seat at the bar. Â
They usually have a pretty rad DJ, and some fun events going on throughout the week. They have a downstairs bar/patio, but to tell you the truth, I'm not sure I've ever spent any time downstairs.
I absolutely LOVE the decor of this place. The mood keeps me coming back. They have lots of art on the walls and beautiful black ceiling tins. (I am a sucker for ceiling tins!) The lighting is perfect. I also judge bars by whether or not they have bag hooks at the bar - they totally have bag hooks. Woohoo! I love the Looking Glass... as long as I'm living in the Petworth/Columbia Heights area, it'll probably be my favorite bar.
I used to really enjoy the Looking Glass but after my last visit I am not sure I will be returning.
Full disclosure, I am a Baltimore boy, I have lived in Boston and visit DC often and prefer the more casual down to earth temperament of  Charm City to the metropolitan vibe of DC, Boston and similar cities. Even the "dive" bars in DC can often not escape this metro-influence.
Previous visits to the Looking Glass felt more "down to earth" than my recent visit. Like a neighborhood joint for the new young hip immigrants to Petworth. Â
This time the bar was over-crowded, the DJ was awful and the vibe was a little overwhelming for me. This must all be a result of the once gentrifying cloud over Petworth that is now a fog as thick as pea soup.
A neighborhood can greatly benefit from new neighbors: reducing crime, attracting business and filling vacant housing. But new residents can also raise rent, push neighbors out and worst of all destroy a neighborhood's history rather than co-exist building upon its personality and culture.
The Looking Glass is an example of this. This "neighborhood" bar could be found in any up and coming hipster neighborhood.
The food is sub-par standard pub fare, I would suggest not eating here. The beer selection is good and for DC the prices are affordable but for other cities it is still a little pricey.
I know many residents of this Northwest DC neighborhood swear by this "neighborhood" bar, but lets face it, The Looking Glass could do better and you really like it cause it is close, convenient and hip.
Not impressed. At all.
I've heard a lot of 'this place is great', 'oh, I love this bar', 'there's nowhere else I'd rather spend my night' and I'm trying to figure out what they mean.
I came into this place with expectations. Not high ones, but some nonetheless. It was a neighborhood bar that a lot of my friends truly enjoyed.
Wait...why?
The place was dirty.
The food was absolutely horrible. I ordered the Monte Cristo and it was burned to Hell and back. My beer was luke warm and the waitress was more concerned about hitting on a guy friend than waiting on the table.
From that point, I was done with the place. But seeing as my friends took a pride in hanging out here, I was obliged to stick it out and see where it went.
As the evening went on, it got weird and it got crowded. The DJ was playing some super tacky music that only got the drunk people dancing.
The best part of the night was when the waitress gave us a free round of shots, but it obviously dealt with hitting on our guy friend. Free shots, can't go wrong there...unless you don't like scotch. The night proceeded to get more awkward and more weird with the people that showed up. I really can't explain to you why or how, it just did.
All in all, I won't be coming back here. There's nothing delicious about the food, there's nothing great about the service, there's nothing special about the alcohol (except that they serve Boh here), and the inside decor leaves much to be desired, although the wallpaper was cool looking, but dirty.
I always wander here each time everything else in the neighborhood is closed. Need to start showing LGL a little more love. Each experience here has been rewarding. Primarily it's the food. LGL just serves really good food. Haven't had one bad item from the menu. Caesar salad is a big, fresh salad with peppers and even a few anchovies tossed on top. I'm not into anchovies, but thanks for classing up the dish. I'll just set those to the side. I had a first rate meal (salad, wings, beer) for around $15. That's a great deal.
Always an interesting assortment of beers on tap. I think Sunday evening at LGL is one of Georgia Ave's best perks. That they serve terrific food (salads, chicken sandwich, fries, etc) better than most full service restaurants in the neighborhood is worth noting. That they exhibit that quality on a cold, dark Sunday night in January is 5 star worthy.
Casual bar that has a pub like feel with all the dark wood in this place. Â The staff is always friendly and they have good drinks and yummy food. Â The chili cheese burger is good and I always like that they have Wild Blue, a strong blueberry beer. Â
The best part about this place is the downstairs where they have an outdoor beer garden. Â This place isn't cheap, it is reasonable priced.
My favorite spot in the neighborhood. I agree that you could call it "upscale divey." I find myself here for dinner quite often on Sundays with other local friends.
The food is way better than you would expect for bar food, beats other similar offerings in the neighborhood hands down. My boyfriend loves the burger, its big and they offer a good selection of cheeses for it. I love the chicken strips, which are surprisingly juicy with a delicious batter and paired perfectly with honey mustard sauce. Also, $4 wings on Sun and Mon are great. Good selection of alcohol. I know many fans of the combo, a shot of beam and a natty boh for $5.
It doesn't get that crowded here, maybe on a lively Fri/Sat night a dance party may start. But unfortunately a friend and I walked in late on a Fri night and sat at the bar for more than 5 minutes without the bar tender looking our way. Like I said, the bar was full, but not crazy busy, and he seemed to be chatting. Sadly, though I felt like a traitor, I got tired of waiting and went next door to the Blue Banana, where I had my drink within a minute...
No idea Petworth actually had a good hangout :P I'd call it upscale divey... it wants to be under the radar, but you can tell someone cares too much. I walked into this unpretentious space and what do I hear? The National. Ah, already loving the space. The upstairs has a bar right near the entrance, and towards the back are more tables. There's some dark velvet Damask wallpaper and eclectic artwork about (see, little upscale to be called a proper dive).
We played Scrabble downstairs (yes, you read that correctly). A few beers, the official Scrabble dictionary, and some boards later, we are buzzed while having our vocabulary expanded. Suddenly those orange enrichment vocab books from grades 6-12 would come in handy (do you know what I'm talking about? 20 synonyms, 20 antonyms, use it in a sentence, every week 20 new words).
Ordered the veggie meatloaf sandwich (awesome if you love marinara sauce) with Old Bay fries (greasy and skinny, like Mickey D's, so love). Also tried the quesadilla (horrible, skip this). They have 1 cider, it's organic, and is easily 2 drinks worth.
I'll be back in the spring to check out their patio... and drink more cider.
What a lucky lady I was to experience this joint while in DC. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better Friday night on the town then my night at the Looking Glass.
Not too big too be overwhelming and not too small to be pretentious, the Looking Glass made me feel like I was hanging out in a neighborhood bar in Detroit.
Old wooden floors and a pretty large bar to drink a great variety of beers and cocktails. I had the blueberry pancake beer-in which, when asked, my adorable server gave me an honest opinion on the libation. Love going to places where the staff knows there stuff. Throughout the night she was attentive and helpful without being snotty or overbearing. Score
In addition, to having a wonderful selection of locally, microbrewed beers and liquor, this gem offers up some tasty eats as well. I had the veggie burger with the curly fries. Honestly, I thought WWIII was going to start over those fries. Crisp with a bit of spice, utter perfection! The burger was pretty f'in amazing too. Clearly made from scratch  from fresh ingredients.
Not sure what the weekly schedule of entertainment is here, but there was a DJ on Friday night spinning a great mix of tunes from current hip-hop to classic rock, Blondie, and more!
I want to pick this place up and bring it to Detroit or go back to DC asap!
"In another moment Alice was through the glass, and had jumped lightly down into the Looking-glass room"-- Lewis Carrol
A nice, local bar in the Petworth with great deals for happy hour and a new addition of a late night happy hour after 11 pm to close on Sunday to Thursday! Â The bar offers a decent selection of draft beer. Â There are also plenty of vegetarian options for food, and the dishes I've tried have been tasty. Â I've had their mushroom loaf and vegi and cheese sandwich roll. Â All food menu items are under $10 and the portion sizes are just right.
I love the speakeasy-decor of the place--black victorian ceiling with numerous candiliers hanging. Â
The service can be better. Â I found the wait staff to be slow and not that attentive the few times I've sat at the tables in the back of the bar. Â Also, the Thursday night trivia guy that left a few months back was WAYY Â better than the new guy now on Tuesday nights. Â Questions, such as name the song and which commercial the song is from (who watches commercials AND remembers the songs featured??) and what do all the countries in the shade of gray have in common (there are three shades of gray on this map!) got ridiculous and the new kid is definitely not as funny.
Overall though good bar and good food.
Great neighbourhood place with good beer available. Decent menu and decent food - not outstanding bar food, but good enough. They used to have more "meal-like" meals, but have switched now to be mostly pub food: chicken sandwich, burger, chicken strips, etc. The wings are good, and the burger is good.
There's a nice patio out back for the warmer months, with a bar down there, too. And a Shepard Fairey HOPE poster doesn't hurt. Great jukebox, wonderful selection, although every time I play something it screws up and skips half my songs.
Look, I thought I was going to die crossing the street cause the neighborhood was so sketch, but, all was well upon entering.
I was there on a Tuesday and we could barely find a seat. I think it was because of the trivia that was happening - a good mix of geography/science/pop culture. (I only knew one.. about a jingle... the answer was "Donovan"... kill me.)
My friend and I both got giant Ciders, which I thought were going to be ridiculously expensive, but were only $5! I am not a beer drinker, but was intrigued by the 'blueberry pancake' beer and may go back for that.
The downfalls of this place would be 1) Some TRULY obnoxious (and sad) people who were waaaaaaaaay too into the trivia - but, that's not the bar's fault... 2) SLOWEST. SERVICE. EVER. We had to stand up, stand in the aisle and wave at the guy for him to come back. Which, I hate, having worked in the service industry... but we were waiting for over 30min... not cool.
Overall, though... relaxed atmosphere, decent prices. Good stuff.
You're better off sitting at home with a bottle of Old Grandad watching Brazilian fart porn.
The bar was empty at 10:30 PM. Â I can recall sitting next to a 54 yr old frenzied wino slobbering on my shoulder about how she was rediscovering her inner child through divorce. Â
I woke up the next day alone in my own bed. Â I got standards.
I've never been to Temperance Hall therefore I can't make any comparisons but I would say that Looking Glass is super cool.
They had several drink specials when I went including a berry rickey's which I thought was super tasty [and how can you lose at only $4 a drink!] I really liked that they had liquor drink specials besides the obvious $1 off rails. They also had no nifty beers which the bar tender was super knowledgeable about.
As for food I got the shrimp and my boyfriend got the grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. I really liked both. The shrimp was nothing special but who needs special when you have old bay?! The grilled cheese was perfect with its different mixes of cheese. Not too expensive either. While the food is more expensive then wonderland, the drinks are cheaper.
I also liked the little outside area they had downstairs.
GARLIC FRIES!!!!!!!! Â and they once had goatcheesecake which was the most amazing thing I ever tasted. Â
As for bar atmosphere, it looks like the type of neighborhoody place where people would get to know another. Â But unfortunately groups kind of stick to themselves and the setup doesn't lend to mingling. Â
Downside: Â I once ordered fish and chips. Â It comes out. Â Waiter leaves. Â I have no tartar sauce. Â I get his attention five minutes later. Â They ran out of tartar sauce. Â Ummm.... what is fish without tartar?!? Something he should've told me before the chef started cooking. Â
So I hold it against the waiter for being stupid and not the establishment. Â So I still go back every now and then but I stick to drinks and fries.
I really wanted to give this place five stars. Â I may still do by the end of this review, but we'll see. Â I love this bar. Â I want to come back here after work and just sit and drink a few PBR bottles. Â Yes, bottles. Â They don't serve the cans here. Â Sigh.
Atmosphere: Â 5 stars
Service: Â Â Â Â Â 5 stars
Drinks: Â Â Â Â Â Â 5 stars
Food: Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 4.5 stars
Trivia: Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 3 stars
Well, trivia brought the rating down a half star. Â Four and a half is definitely not bad and it's location is great for me as it's a short distance from my work. Â Ryan and I got there early and they hadn't open the downstairs area for trivia so we grabbed a table and ordered some beers. Â Our waitress was really friendly and got us everything we needed right away. Â We decided to get the beef nacho appetizer and I can't say I've had better nachos. Â The reason they were the best was because they packed those chips with all the beef you can eat. Â I was definitely down with that.
As the downstairs bar opened up, we all made our way to get situated for a night of trivia. Â If you want to be comfortable when you're playing, make sure you get there early. Â The downstairs bar is really small. Â However, it does have a back patio area with seats, but it was closed due to rain. Â Trivia is like the Wonderland Ballroom. Â The trivia hostesses were new and it was their first time hosting it. Â It got rather loud and we had a hard time hearing the hostesses, but other than that the game was pretty standard and was a good time. Â The only problem, the Georgia Avenue round. Â I mean, seriously. Â Worst - round - ever.
Overall, I'm definitely coming back here. Â This place is awesome.
Looking Glass Lounge is not a place I would come to if not for a justifiable purpose.
I actually took the 70 Metro Bus all the way from the Silver Spring Metro. Â It was a rainy night, and not knowing the neighborhood, I did not want to risk driving. Â It gets a bonus point for being a block or so from the Petworth metro stop and near a bus stop too.
The exterior does not give any clue as to how cool it is inside. Â It appears to be a great place to hook up with friends.
My motive was Yelp Trivia, of course! Â It happened to be relegated to the basement bar, which was way too small for all the folks who showed up to partake on this Thursday night (I guess Lost was a rerun.) Â
Service was hard to get once the crowds rolled in. Â Several people in my group ate upstairs before staking a claim to a table in the dungeon. Â The menu, which was quite pricey did not impress me. Â Someone at the next table had something very garlicky-- maybe the mussels for $13. Â I'll wait and sample them at Bistrot Du Coin, thank you very much. Â
The beer selections are impressive; some only offered upstairs, drat! I stuck with the not-on-special $5 Staropramens from Prague, ah Prague...I wish I were there right now!
As for trivia here... it was fun and entirely too easy, but did we conquer? Â No!! Â We would have/should have had it not been for that ridiculous "Georgia Ave. Â of Petworth" round. Â Come on! Â It would have been nice to get $75 (not a typo) off our tab! Â We did however win favorite team name (as judged by the bartender who's bootie we kissed up to). Â We earned $15 off our bar tab, plus a few extra "adjustments". Â The trivia hosts should of used a microphone. Â It was hard to hear over the music and talking. Â But, I forgive them because they passed around some pretty tasty homemade cookies with candy coated pieces. Â Brain fuel!
I'm not sure if I'd return. Â As Randy Jackson always says on American Idol, "It was just okay to me".
Temperance Hall was, by far, the best bar in the city. Â For a few weeks after the new owners changed it to the Looking Glass it seemed like things were going to be fine... I am sorry to report that this bar is a real disappointment!
Even without comparing it to TH Looking Glass is a let down. Â The food isn't too good, I had a BLT and when it came out, no bacon. Â None. Â I sent it back. Â It came out again, no mayo. Â My friend's burger was undercooked (like pink and a little cool inside) even though he'd ordered medium. Â Also, veggie options really are limited.
The beer, wine, and liquor selection is still top notch and I like that they have the Dogfish IPA but, if I'm going to pay $6/pint and not get any good food I'll drink at home.
Finally, the customer service is mediocre. Â Although a few of the servers are pleasant the bartenders can be a little cold (to put it mildly).
I used to demand that my friends drive up to Petworth for this bar, we still go because we live nearby, but it is no longer on my "must visit" list. Â I hope the new management fixes some of these problems soon.
This is a "dwell on what once was" review. Deal with it.
I waited for a few months to come back to Looking Glass nee Temperance Hall. The best two things about Temperance were gone: no tater tots and no sloppy joes. So back to ordinary bar food.
I came with a vegetarian (I know...what was I thinking?) and they had very few veggie options. Literally a grilled cheese sandwich. But the fries are still good and they still use that really yummy bread for their sandwiches. I asked to look at the brunch menu (despite it being 10pm on Saturday) and was disappointed to find it kind of boring looking.
The beer selection is good and runs from $6-$8 per pint. They have about 6 taps and several more bottles. They continue to have a large selection of whiskey. I continue to be too little of a man to consume it.
Good: kitchen stay open to midnight on the weekend and the beers are yum. Bad: It's now too ho-hum to justify the long hike up the green line unless I'm going to follow it up by a night out at Red Derby or some such.
Full disclosure: I went to college with one of the bartenders and had a pretty big crush on her then. I came when she was working and as such was half distracted. My apologies if my review sucks (or if I gave them an additional star) because of her.
I live by some simple rules, three of which I'll apply here:
1. Don't dwell in the past, it leaves room for revisionist history.
2. Avoid comparisons, they tend to preempt original experience.
3. No whiners! They're a pain-in-the-ass!!
Looking Glass is everything someone could want in a good neighborhood bar: friendly bartenders who foster neighborly respect and attitude, great service, a fully stocked bar to allow customers who aren't Rye freaks to get their drink on, ample booth seating, and FANTASTIC FOOD!!
I've been in a couple of times and each time has been a damn good time. They've got both Chimay and Hoegaarten in addition to a FULLY stocked Rye collection. Music playing is usually the bartenders ipod loaded with "ol' skool" soul and R&B, otherwise the juke box takes care of the tunes. The menu is great, complete with the BEST burger in the country bar non!! Went in New Years Eve and they were serving greens & ham with black eyed peas...if I remember correctly.. and dolling out Rye shots. Best New Years ever. Bartenders, staff and customers occasionally evoke their euphoria by exhibiting collective dance moves on the bar Coyote Ugly style. As long as they're not stomping on my drinks das otay by me.
The only other rule that might apply to Looking Glass for me is the ol' "Too much of a good thing..." , but in this case I want the "good thing" to last as long as possible, certainly before the college crowd get hip to it!!
I never had a chance to go to Temperance Hall, so I have no Temperance-vs-Looking-Glass comparison. But having moved here from Rockville where local flavor is sorely lacking, I eagerly welcome Looking Glass as my new watering hole.
It has everything I could ever want in a local pub:
1. A bartender who knows me when I walk in
2. Tasty menu (with a kick-ass burger to boot)
3. Weekly trivia night
4. Comfortable, non-pretentious (yet strangely elegant) atmosphere
I'm sold! Looking Glass, I am on bended knee. Will you please be my new local bar?
Came here with friends after they bought a house nearby and was jealous that this was their local bar. Really amazing space with vintage ceiling tiles, soaring ceilings, cool old decor.. pair that with solid bar food and a bar selection that would keep me coming back for more....and more....and more. I know there were alot of skeptics because switched ownership and a new name, but the Looking Glass Lounge is definitely a keeper, in a city full of forgettable bars.
Update: After a few months of coming here all I have to say is that I really sad that I had to demote them a few stars. I really wanted this place to do well, but they just can't seem to hit an even stride. The service is spotty at best, with a few members of the staff being down right suck. The food can come out really well, or luke warm and dried out like it's been sitting out for 15 minutes... it's a total crap shoot. IMHO, if you can't get fries and nachos right, slow your epicurean roll and take things like duck confit enchiladas and seared foie grais off the menu until you get a handle on your quality control. The manager is always super apologetic and always goes way out of his way to make things right, which is great and all... but maybe cracking the whip with the staff might be a better use of managerial energy.
