bar with beer and bar food, nothin bad but nothin special.
thursday happy hour = half off beers and burgers. I got the veggie burger which is a mix of quinoa and black beans and mushrooms. got it with cheddar and chipotle sauce that comes on the side and house made pickles and a side of fries, pretty tasty!
I dropped in for quick bite and to sample some great beers. Â It's multilevel so don't just stop when you first walked in.
I sat at the bar and got very good service from Morgan. Â She really new her beers. Â Even though there was no beer sampler/fight - I had Morgan pick a few to surprise me. Â All great beers. Â
I had classic the burger -- cooked to perfection as ordered, medium rare. Â It was a very good burger. Â I'll be back, got sample a whole bunch of more beers.
I'm an Adams Morgan resident, so I've been going to The Black Squirrel pretty frequently for about 3 years. Â It's definitely one of my top 2 or 3 go-to bars in the area. Â Their sriracha wings are my favorite wings in town, and their burgers are fantastic (although it bummed me out when their 1/2 price burger night went from half off your entire burger order to half off the base price for a plain burger - paying full price for the toppings can add up to a big difference). Â The mussels, mac & cheese, and poutine are also favorites of mine.
They have an excellent beer selection, but I don't really recommend this place if you're more of a mixed-drink person (unless you're looking for something with absinthe in it).
My main gripe has always been the lack of drink specials. Â If they ever do have them, they're not very clearly advertised or consistent, since I've never known of any in all the time I've been going here. Â Come on guys - can't we get a 1/2 price draft night, or even $2 off.... something? Â My only bad food experience here was when I tried having brunch about a year ago. Â They had apparently just put the brunch menu together, and everything I got was way overpriced and not especially good - particularly when you consider how many better brunch options there are in the area.
Basically, if it's after happy hour and I want to go someplace with a more laid-back, non-clubby scene for a few beers and some food, this is possibly the best place to go in Adams Morgan... especially if it's a Thursday night and you want a burger.
