bar with beer and bar food, nothin bad but nothin special.

thursday happy hour = half off beers and burgers. I got the veggie burger which is a mix of quinoa and black beans and mushrooms. got it with cheddar and chipotle sauce that comes on the side and house made pickles and a side of fries, pretty tasty!

I dropped in for quick bite and to sample some great beers.  It's multilevel so don't just stop when you first walked in.

I sat at the bar and got very good service from Morgan.  She really new her beers.  Even though there was no beer sampler/fight - I had Morgan pick a few to surprise me.  All great beers.

I had classic the burger -- cooked to perfection as ordered, medium rare.  It was a very good burger.  I'll be back, got sample a whole bunch of more beers.

I'm an Adams Morgan resident, so I've been going to The Black Squirrel pretty frequently for about 3 years.  It's definitely one of my top 2 or 3 go-to bars in the area.  Their sriracha wings are my favorite wings in town, and their burgers are fantastic (although it bummed me out when their 1/2 price burger night went from half off your entire burger order to half off the base price for a plain burger - paying full price for the toppings can add up to a big difference).  The mussels, mac & cheese, and poutine are also favorites of mine.

They have an excellent beer selection, but I don't really recommend this place if you're more of a mixed-drink person (unless you're looking for something with absinthe in it).

My main gripe has always been the lack of drink specials.  If they ever do have them, they're not very clearly advertised or consistent, since I've never known of any in all the time I've been going here.  Come on guys - can't we get a 1/2 price draft night, or even $2 off.... something?  My only bad food experience here was when I tried having brunch about a year ago.  They had apparently just put the brunch menu together, and everything I got was way overpriced and not especially good - particularly when you consider how many better brunch options there are in the area.

Basically, if it's after happy hour and I want to go someplace with a more laid-back, non-clubby scene for a few beers and some food, this is possibly the best place to go in Adams Morgan... especially if it's a Thursday night and you want a burger.

Hell no! Food came out super slowly. Bartender waited on people before us when we tried to get his attention. Then, after we asked for the check, he waited on MORE people before giving us our tabs.

The food was good but the service was negative.

I like this bar a lot! It is has a fun vibe and the beer selection is big enough to make it a beer sampling night with their 4oz beer option! Also, The bartenders have always been on the ball! Go grab a beer!

Although this craft beer bar was not on our radar as a must see, it became are "home bar" during our stay in DC. Crowds were great, beer selection was top notch, a young lady who was serving upstairs and bar tending downstairs the next night had a little bit of a "I'm to cool" attitude thing going on, but I was so happy with everything else! This is a must visit while in DC

As neighborhood bars go, the Black Squirrel is the best in Adams Morgan.  The beer selection is top-notch, absolutely great, the food is very good for bar food, and the service is friendly.  I always find the bartenders jovial, welcoming, and helpful.  Highly recommended.

4 stars for the food. I really liked it, especially after some of the spotty barfood in the neighborhood (Madams, Gran Central, Ventnor). I like Ole Riz too - salt of the earth

amaze ball beer selection! even more amaze ball that they have 4oz tasting prices so you can try all of them.  i'm not familiar with florida brews, but the few IPAs that i tasted were quite delicious.  we were here saturday around 6:30 and the bar wasn't too badly crowded, but 7:30 rolls around and we lost our one on one relationship with the bartender.  this is def a great beer aficionado bar, just try to go during a time where the undergrads haven't taken over Ad Mo yet.

Good beer selection. Tasty burgers. Crowded the night we went, and while the bartenders were working very hard, they were not keeping up. One more person on the stafff and they would have sold more drinks and food. The music was loud so the customers were all yelling. After a couple people asked, the bartender turned it down. Made it much better.

I am judging this on a Beer Event during Craft Brewers Conference...they have a nice selection of craft beer(one star) and hosted a couple of great breweries(one star)...but these guys were over their heads. Two bartenders for a 60 foot or so bar? When the place is packed? And the bartender (no exaggeration) has to re ask customers what they wanted after going to get the drinks over 5 times in my listening area? I can't sit at a bar and wait more than 30 minutes in between drinks...this place wasn't ready for prime time when I was there. They should have had more staff, more bussers....and just....MORE. It could be great, but right now, it was minor leagues.

Thanks to Gene Sohn for trying to classy up the place in Adams Morgan. While we've avoided the place as we normally try to avoid the vacuous sluts and morons that frequent the area at night. But someone told me that Gene, who used to sling hash over at that cheap eats place called Marcel's (ha) opened up a place called the Black Squirrel, and I LOVE black squirrels. And burgers. And beers. The burgers are simply delicious. No crazy toppings or weird stuff. Just great burgers and beer. So goodbye to the skanky old TS Slutley's that used to smell up the building and hello to the Black Squirrel!

My "beer snob" beau loved the craft beer selection. Apparently, there's more than meets the eye on the lower level. Since I'm not big on beer, I always want something fruity. Unfortunately, they don't serve frozen booze, so I taught the bartender how to make me a Malibu Bay Breeze. It was so good!

While we were there, it seemed like EVERY patron ordered a burger. They all looked delish and HUGE, so I'll be getting that during my next visit.

Black Squirrel has this cute upstairs party space, which I thought was pretty awesome. I like the bar, so I thought I'd do my 30th birthday party there. Not knowing how far in advance I'd need to book the space, I began reaching out to them on March 4th. I called. No answer. I left a message. Nothing. So I emailed the address on the website. Nothing. I called and someone told me to call back during certain hours. So I called back. The phone rang and rang. Then, I called and got Alejandro. I gave him my information and he never called me back. I continued to call daily (in all, I'm sure I called at least 30 times), amazed that I couldn't get anyone on the phone. I even re-sent my email. I called today again to find out what in the world was going on. I got Alejandro on the phone. I asked for a manager. He said he was one. I told him about my dilemma of trying to reach someone for nearly 2 weeks with no answer. His response? "Ok." So then I told him I needed to know how many people I could have in the space and the specifics of using said space before I could put together party details. He told me he could take my info and get back to me. I decided that wasn't alright, as that's what every one else had done and I had heard nothing. So I wasn't going for the brush-off this time. Alejandro never apologized for not reaching out to me or anything. I said that I was worried about the bar not getting back to me and if that's the kind of attention I got BEFORE my event, I was right to worry about my actual event. I said that I wanted to get this all organized or I'd have to have my event elsewhere and I didn't want to do that. So what does Alejandro tell me, "Well go somewhere else then." Oh. Ok.

I called back, in disbelief that this person was part of the management staff. I got Keith on the phone. I explained to him what had been going on and what happened today. He basically told me that yes, I'd have to deal with Alejandro. And that if my personality didn't mesh with his, then I probably should have my party elsewhere. Ummmmm, ok . . .

This bar will never see another dime of mine. I'm still shocked and highly upset at the lack of professionalism here.

More than meets the eye. The Black Squirrel, from the outside, looks like  one of the usual neighborhood joints in Adams Morgan. There are three levels. At dinner time on a Saturday, the main floor was full, so we easily got a seat at the basement bar.

The beer selection is first class, and the staff know there stuff. They were friendly and helped us by offering some samples of the drafts. They had IPAs, Barleywine, sour ale, fruit ciders, as example of their stock. We started off dinner with the Mac and cheese appetizer, which was really good (not quite creamy). I ran into trouble trying to narrow down my choice of burgers. First of all, it's good quality black angus beef. They have all kinds of toppings to choose from (truffles, prosciutto Mac and cheese fritter, pork belly). I got the pork belly cheese burger. It was unbelievable...there was a tender (2 oz?) block of pork belly on top of a perfectly cooked juicy burger. The bun held up well, and the fries were nice, thick, and crisp.

I will def be back to try more of the different burger and beer combos.

I don't think I would go back. I find the seasoning on their burger to be really strange and it was raw the first time it came out. Their duck spring rolls had very little flavor but the sauce it was served with was tasty. Honestly my friend and I left underwhelmed by the atmosphere, staff, flavors on the menu, and feeling a little sick from the food. Two stars for craft beer and convenient location.

How have I not ventured here sooner? This is a great spot in midst of the Adams Morgan bar crowd. Its got a diverse crowd and isn't overrun by college kids or wannabe hipsters.

I didn't get a chance to fully explore all the multiple floors, so I can't say too much about the space and options. But the middle floor where we stopped for a beer and appetizer was nice. Small and narrow with tight tables, but not too tight or claustrophobic. It had just the right amount of wall hangings / posters. Enough interesting items to catch your eye, but not too many to appear overrun. On this level, there was a bar area with seating in the back and then several tables lining each wall.

The service was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. Just the right amount of attentiveness. And given the crowd, I found all of that impressive. And zero irritation at our 1 pint, 1 app order.

The beer list had me quivering with excitement (especially all their winter offerings). But unfortunately, they were out of two that I really wanted. But third time was the charm, so it was all good. And I somehow completely missed that you could do samples / flights. Oh well, next time...

For food, we had already just eaten, so all we could handle was a snack. But oh my did the menu look appetizing. And all the food at the tables around us looked quite tasty. So needless to say, we will have to return to sample some more. For this visit, we opted just for the poutine fries as James O. had never had nor heard os such a thing before. Gasp, yes, that's true. Clearly, that was a travesty that had to be remedied. Now these fries weren't the best poutine fries I've had (could've used some more smothering with gravy), but they were mighty tasty and totally hit the spot. And James O. is now a fan of poutine fries - so mission accomplished.

Overall, a very enjoyable visit and experience was had. One that will most definitely be bringing us back for more.

You like macaroni and cheese?  Yeah, me too.
You like burgers?  Yeah me too.
You want macaroni and cheese ON your burger?  YEAH ME TOO.

Uh huh, the beer selection is good and all that junk, but I had a macaroni and cheese patty on top of my burger and it was fat-kid fabulous.

The website menu doesn't indicate the cost of the items, so FYI my mac & cheese/burger combo was something like $15-$16.  Most specialty burgers were in that range.

This review is for their Thanksgiving buffet, which, at $5 a person, might draw some justified skepticism.

My husband and I stayed in the city to catch up on some work this holiday, and we scoured the interwebs for possible options to fill our turkey-stuffing-overeating needs. All of the options we came across were multi-course, expensive, and really not what we were looking for. After finding out about the buffet through the "Things to do in DC" email, we decided to check it out--boy are we glad we did.

As you might expect, one of the best things about the buffet is the beer selection available while you nosh. Obviously not included in the five dollar price, their selection is fantastic and worth going back for. Sadly they ran out of the Schlafly Pumpkin Ale, my beer of choice, but there were plenty of other opportunities for me to expand my horizon. They are reasonably priced and there are some interesting choices available.

As for the food, it's not the best food I've ever eaten. But, it's better than some of the food I've eaten at my own family Thanksgivings (not the food I cook). It was hot, fresh, and well prepared. It was great to have an event in the city allowing those who are by themselves to come out, enjoy the festivities, and not spend a lot of money. There was a variety of meats, sides, and veggies, and you could tell that the event was there to give back to their customers and guests, not to profit.

I appreciate The Black Squirrel for putting this on--if I'm in town next year I'll be back (and I'll probably be back in the meantime as well!).

Im giving 3.5/5 stars on food & 4.5/5 on beer.   My food knowledge and experience comes from living in seattle, san francisco, and chicago.  I am an avid burger lover, as well as beer enthusiast (brew my own beer).  Both my friend and I decided to order the Cheesburger with pork belly which comes with fries.  The meet was much too undercooked, as well were the fries, however the meet itself was delicious, outstanding sweet sauce on the burger, and large tasty sesame seed bun.  Unfortunatly the fries were also undercooked.
Overall there is a great beer selection, given how small the little joint is in Adams/Morgan. There is a variety of selection not just in bottles but on draft, as well as seasonal selection.  If I lived in D.C. would frequent here as a watering hole given solid food/drink/ and atmosphere. Overall decent service. Prices slightly high, but I was told this is the norm for Adams Morgan and D.C. in general.

These PBR serving, thick eye-glass wearing bartenders, soft-talking in dark corners - hipstery type bars are just overdone! I guess I am too old for this now. Where are the out to get drunk, slutty-dressed girls and overly eager horny men in DC these days? I am totally out of touch apparently. Maybe it's me but I am a AdMo veteran. Not too sound too over-the-hill but I was going to these fine establishments since he mid-90s! Lots of stories to tell...

    Ok. Done with my rant.

Black Squirrel reminded me of Heaven and Hell but for hipsters. Sigh....

Three stars for the beer selection and generally pubby feel. Poops to the overpriced food.

I went on a Sunday to watch the game and get some brunch/lunch. The bartender very kindly let me watch the game I wanted since it hadn't been claimed yet, but they wouldn't turn on the sound for the pre-game despite my request! I wasn't asking for the whole bar to hear my audio, just my tv. Yet instead they made me listen to their generic bar CD mix. Blah.

I ordered a fancy burger stuffed with cheese and topped with pork belly for $15. I didn't notice it at the time (probably due to my hangover) but they didn't ask me how I liked the burger cooked. This became immediately apparent when my burger came out medium-well (leaning towards well). I'm strictly a medium guy so the burger kinda crumbled and I kinda hated that. Also, nowhere to be found was the cheese. Maybe it was part of the crumblage. The slice of pork belly on top was huge! but that's because it was only half pork belly, while the other half was pork! Don't get me wrong, I love pork but don't call it pork belly and give me half pork meat half pork belly. Overall, it definitely didn't justify the $15 price tag.

But the best part about the bar is the beer, hands down. An excellent selection of beers, including Black Squirrel exclusives, seasonal beers, and generally harder to find brews. For the beer enthusiast, Black Squirrel doesn't disappoint at all. It's a fun place to grab a cold one... just not a burger.

The Black Squirrel makes me actually want to hang out in Adams Morgan on a Saturday night.  Yeah.  That's right.  I said it.

A friend suggested this place for drinks last weekend.  I went online to do some research and saw there are three stories, each with a different beer selection.  My heart started beating a little faster and I felt slight butterflies in my stomach.  The place has the tagline "Where Beers Come True" for goodness sakes.  I knew I had found something special.

Upon entering Black Squirrel, I had momentary flashbacks to meaningful minutes of my life wasted in places like Grand Central, avoiding douchey guys falling over drunk girls on the dance floor and where my beer options are bud or miller light.....when I could have been here enjoying good beer and laid back vibes.  *le sigh*  At least I know now.

The bottom floor of Black Squirrel has a great selection of California's best brewers (I am loving Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin' at the moment), nice graffiti decor, and reggae/dub beats.  I felt very at home.  The second floor had a wider East Coast/European beer selection and a more restaurant-y feel.  The third floor wasn't open, but I imagine it is as great if not better than the other two floors.

I was in a finger food mood so we went for the wings, as I cannot say no when I see cock sauce on the menu *ahem*sriracha silly, get your mind out of the gutter.  We also tried The Poutine Fries. Gravy, cheese sauce, bacon bits, and chives.  This combination may kill you instantaneously by making your arteries utterly impassable, but you are bound to die happy.

Black Squirrel, I've got a crush on you.  I will be back for more.

Holy crap so much beer from errywhere!!! I love Black Squirrel, and I love the service.  My first evening here, one of the bartenders (Rhydwyn) was kind enough to let me try several of the beers on tap based on some of the qualities I was in the mood for that night. We came on a Monday night, and besides the one crazy cat getting piss drunk and falling all over the place while her friend frantically tried to keep her upright, it was pretty damn dead in there.  Good. That's the way I wanted it.

If you don't want to go for a fancy craft/ imported beer, the White Squirrel is pretty refreshing and tasty.  If you're in a dessert kind of mood, go for the fancy shmancy creme brulee beer. It's fragrant as hell, and when my friend ordered it, I could smell it from a couple feet away. Damn good stuff, too, if you're a fan of sweet drinks. ;)

I haven't tried the food here, but I was definitely eyeing the burgers... I wonder if they're any good? Perhaps after I get a real paying job, I'll be back to try some of the gastropub-ish food. For now, I'm content to sit at the bar and enjoy some good beer and great company.

(PS Amsterdam Falafel next door: major win!)

You're got three levels here: the downstairs is generally packed and playing live music on the weekends. Up the stairs it's very chill, and you can just sit and chat. I didn't realize when I was there that there was a third level, so I can't speak to that experience! You should check out the website first because each level has different beer offerings. It's annoying that you have to leave and re-enter if you want to switch between floors, especially if you're mid-drink. But, taken together, this is probably the best beer list in Adams Morgan. Plus the absinthe, gotta love that if you're on the adventurous side.

It gets docked for service and price. On the main level, there was a lot of pressure from staff to find a seat and stick to it. They didn't want us ordering from the bar on our own for some reason, and they were quite pushy about it. The bathroom on this level also had no light, so I had to go by the glow of my phone flashlight!

This isn't a bad place, really, and if I'm in the area and looking for a new beer to try, this is likely the place I'll stop by. But with so many options on the street, there wasn't much to make this place stand out, and as much as I love beer, the atmosphere just isn't very welcoming. I did like that we could sit at a little alcove by the window overlooking the street below and people watch. It can be quite entertaining as the night goes on! I'd give it 3.5 if I could.

But being a poutine-lover on my never ending question to find a decent poutine in DC, I will be honest in that I really went to the black squirrel to try their poutine. I was majorly disappointed.

The description states: "Hand-cut fries smothered in homemade gravy, cheese sauce, bacon bits, and scallions." Lots is wrong with this, and I should have known just from reading the description. Super thin and crisp fries means the fries won't absorb the gravy. The gravy is thick and homemade, but there wasn't enough of it. The cheese sauce is no replacement for curds. The bacon bits and scallions did little other than garnish. After eating the whole thing with a friend (who also happens to be from Quebec), we both concluded that there's no way whatsoever that this should be allowed to be called a poutine. It didn't look like one, it didn't taste like one, and it wasn't good.

That said, I keep on going back to the Black Squirrel. I love the atmosphere, in particular the basement bar. Good bar, friendly bartenders, and I love I can order small/sampler sized tasters. I even tried the poutine again -- it was no fluke. Too bad.

I will start off by saying this is strictly a review of Black Squirrel as a bar for drinking.  I've never had the food here so I can't comment on it.  I've been in quite a few times for drinks though and had pretty good experiences every time.

The bar is split into three levels.  Each floor is slightly different in style and mood and carries a different selection of draft beer.  I actually didn't realize this until just now when I checked their website as I  was trying to remember what kind of beer I had the other night when I popped in.   The draft selection is very large and they have a lot of craft beers available.  They might have the most on 18th Street.  Prices are pretty standard for the quality of beer and the area - between $5 and $9 depending on what you get.  Don't be put off though, some of the better beers are on the cheaper end of the scale.  The expensive ones are usually the super high alcohol content beers.

The real reason to come here is for the absinthe.  It is one of the few places, or maybe only place, you can get it in DC.  If you don't like Jaeger you shouldn't try it though.  It is very heavy in the licorice flavor.  It's a little on the pricey side but still worth trying as it will hit you pretty hard.

Clientele tends to be on the younger side, at least on the weekends.  I guess you could say it attracts the typical Adams Morgan crowd.

Don't go unless you appreciate good, micro brewed beers.

You won't find a Miller High Life or Bud Light Lime in this place - as it should be. The food isn't just your typical bar food. The specials are going to vary, and the dishes will have a French twist to them. Service is a little slow, and the place is a little small, but I don't mind it as much. When I go here, I'm not trying to pound back as many kegs as I can an hour, I'm here to enjoy one or two good beers at a slower pace.

Stunningly mediocre. They have a decent beer selection and the bartenders are pretty meh. They're not particularly enthusiastic about said beer selection however they'll at least grab you the right one. Also, it's clean, which is a huge step up from other places in AdMo.

It's not the most exciting bar, but the downstairs at least has music playing and a slightly livelier crowd, although don't expect a huge mob filling every crevice of this establishment. From past experiences, people here seem to stick with their group, so don't expect tons of mingling.

What's most important is that the Black Squirrel is right next door to Amsterdam Falafel, which has the best drunk food in all of AdMo, possibly in all of DC (appropriate review to come).

Black Squirrel is good for a chill night or somewhere slow to start off a bigger night, but if you're looking for a real "scene", wander to anywhere else in AdMo.

This is my favorite beer bar in DC.  I know Churchkey is probably the actual better beer bar, but it's crowded, hip, and sometimes [a lot of times] I just like sitting in dark place that isn't mobbed with people and crush craft beer.  Black Squirrel is also the most tolerable place in Adams Morgan if you're trying to avoid bros coming into the city from Sterling for their big night on the town.

Black Squirrel has a great collection of craft beers on tap, with tons more in bottles.  They also offer a 36 oz behemoth of a mug of German lager if you're looking to get loaded fast.  The bar is split into three levels, guaranteeing you will find a nice place to sit where you won't have people hanging all over you.  The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable.

Black Squirrel is pretty much my favorite place to drink in DC.  It's perfect for after dinner beverages when dining in the area at places like the excellent Casa Oaxaca or the more mediocre places in Adams Morgan.

I had the pleasure of knowing someone that thought black squirrels where the result of a government conspiracy that involved toxic waste dumping.  When I told him that I saw a sign at the zoo stating they were from Canada, he didn't believe me.  I am thankful for The Black Squirrel for giving even more information about the history of the mysterious rodent on the back of their menu. If I ever run into that guy again, I know exactly where to send him.

And I also know where to send people if they want a fantastic burger with an impressive beer list. The burgers are made from freshly ground Hereford beef with a mix of rendered duck fat, resulting in a damn good quality burger.  I had Chimay cheese added and it was a serious chunk of cheese - no wimpy slices of cheese in sight.  To make it even better, Thursday is half price burger night.

Overall - The Black Squirrel is a nice neighborhood bar with a mellow and relaxed vibe.  It does not seem to be a place where 21 year olds come and get trashed taking shots.  It is a place that people come to drink good beer, eat a good burger, and maybe even have some absinthe.

My review is based on Thursday : Half priced organic burgers! Simply delicious and they have bunch of toppings to choose from! Definitely a good deal.

Beer selection is awesome! If you sit in the basement food will come in a plastic box :-) So if you want a better experience go upstairs.

I will go back - only on Thursdays though :-)

I love black squirrels. Actually, I'm an equal opportunity squirrel lover, but I always get a kick out of my friends that come to town and have never seen a black squirrel. Their first reaction?

"Wow! This really is chocolate city!"

So kudos Black Squirrel, for your quirky name.

Although the space is pretty small, it's laid back, cozy and unpretentious. If you're a big beer drinker, you'll be impressed with the selection. They also have a decent little menu with bar bites. My friend ordered a veggie burger, which was created in an unconventional twist. Instead of a traditional patty, the burger was basically made from cous cous, wrapped in eggplant with homemade BBQ sauce. It was pretty decent, but if you're not very open minded about the form of your veggie burger, you may be a bit thrown off.

While I would definitely come back, it's just not a place I would normally frequent but no fault of the venue. Just personal preference.

Overall, I had a great time though and would give the overall experience a 3.5 rating.

If you're a big beer drinker, definitely a place to check out!

3.50 stars.  The Black Squirrel compares favorably to Axis Bar & Grill on U Street as a quiet place to have a drink and converse with your friends.  The beers on tap are actually interesting (think Dale's, Lagunitas, etc).  I have yet to try their food, but I think I might on a repeat visit.

Our bartender (Jeremy) was equal parts hilarious and helpful.  During an unnecessarily loud, public spat between Rich L. and myself, the bartender interjected and commented that he had been watching all of us for awhile and that he felt that none of us had decent game.  Rich L. went on an impassioned tirade about the plethora of numbers he had received that very night; I simply agreed with the bartender's assessment and grabbed another beer.  At some point, the bartender allowed us to sample an amazingly high proof lemon concoction that was stronger than the 151 shots I had purchased earlier in the evening.  I'm definitely going to go back for those at some point.

At the end of the night, Andrew W., Rich L., and myself threw down a final round of shots and this time headed in separate directions.  Although the night was a bit off, it had nothing to do with the Black Squirrel.  It very well could be the only bar I would frequent in Adams Morgan.  Check it out.

One of my favorite bars in AdMo.  Now that I'm out of college (and not single) I rarely frequent the "meat market" bars that line 18th Street. The Black Squirrel is a welcomed calm amidst the insanity that is Adams Morgan on a Saturday night.   If you get the spot right at the front window (with the cool tree stump table), you're GOLDEN in terms of people-watching.  There is nothing better than kicking back with a Hoegaarden and watching the bachelorette parties stroll by with their penis necklaces and Miss "I'm-No-Longer-Allowed-to-be-a-Slut" banners.

Also, the food here is AWESOME! I've only had a burger, but they won me over with the HOME MADE barbeque sauce.  It is deeeeelicious.  And they have gruyere cheese as a burger topping.  Done and done!

All in all, the Black Squirrel is a definite place to stop by for a few drinks and/or a burger.  Apparently, they also have the "strongest drink in Adams Morgan" according to their signs in the bathroom.  I do not personally know this, but if it's stronger than the Diner's Champagne Cocktail, than they have my vote!

One cool tidbit of information: one guy that works there explained that the named the bar the Black Squirrel because...obviously...of all the crazy ass black ninja squirrels that reside in DC.  Cool!

    I like it.

Entering here off of 18th Street at about 1 AM on Halloween night, it was like stepping into another dimension.  There is space to stand in, empty tables to sit at, and I can actually get up to the bar, and very low music so I could actually hear my friends talk, I didn't believe it was real for a little while.

Plus the beer list which is the size of a menu is something special.

And while the staff is not the quickest in the world (I ordered 3 Delirium and had to wait 15 minutes for two of them while they changed kegs), I think I can look over that small problem. I will be coming back for food another time, I'm sure.

Don't come here if you want to dance.

Well, alrighty-then!  I am pleasantly surprised to be able to announce that I like this new-ish Adams Morgan bar/restaurant.

My husband scared the bejeezus out of me yesterday by saying "let's find somewhere new in the neighborhood to eat!"  I nearly tripped over myself pulling up Yelp Adams Morgan on the living room laptop.  After paging through the usual suspects, I saw "The Black Squirrel".  Que?  Was ist das?  Hmmm, the reviews make it sound, well, *good*!!

We tromped on over, and right after walking in and seating ourselves, saw an old friend, one of the owners of Amsterdam Falafel, which is right next door. Turns out Arianne and Scott hang at "The Squirrel" all the time.  This is a good sign.  The other clientele look similarly cool and hip yet not too young (i.e. not college-age suburbanites).

Now the waiter (also named Scott) knows we know the Falafelshop folks, so he's all friendly, and talks us through the beers and the food menu.  Very nice selection of beers!  I choose the Black Squirrel White Ale, while Martin goes for a Red Hook.  Said waiter thoughtfully extends the happy hour half-priced burgers special for us, and we order up -- beef burger with mushrooms and goat cheese for me, veggie burger for him.

Scott insists we try an appetizer while we are waiting, and he brings us a serving of the duck spring rolls.  These are very tasty, served with a sort of marmalade.  A little greasy, but not too much so. Pretty rich and filling, so I didn't eat all of mine.

The burger was excellent -- charbroiled, thick ground beef, sauteed mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and a glob of goat cheese, all on a kaiser bun.  Martin's veggie burger was eggplant and quinoa, also served with goat cheese and lettuce, tomato.  Fries come with the burgers, and they are decent, skinny fries with skins.  Malt vinegar was already on the table.  Yesssss.

The Squirrel has some great-sounding entrees that we'd like to come back and try, such as the tilapia (or rather, fish-of-the-week), a flat iron steak, a linguine dish, and a lamb shank. They also have mussels in an appetizer or entree size. The entrees run between $15 and $20.

There isn't much here for a vegetarian, except said veggie burger.  Even my husband, who eats just about anything but beef, only saw a few items that he would order.  Still, we'll probably come back at least once to try the full entrees.

One last note -- I was told to try the cheesy mac, and by god I will, but that will have to wait until another day.
