Big hit with the guys after golf!
We play once a week after work at Grapevine, and I've been looking for good places to get dinner and beer afterwards. I found this place and we all LOVED our food.
We all got beers, and although I didn't see cornbread on the menu, I had seen the photos here. I ordered some for the table. I said "it's in the shape of texas" and one of my guys said "of course it is..." because Texas is so proud of being Texas - almost TOO much. Don't know if you'd understand this but we're all from Boston. There's pride, then there's too much pride which amounts to bragging which equals arrogance which is something New Englanders don't like!
The cornbread wasn't all that great BUT - the rest of the food was!
Well almost. I had steak and some enchiladas or something. My steak was pretty fatty and I didn't care for that. I usually don't order steak unless it's top of the line because I hate that gristle and fat you can't see and have to cut around? Drives me nuts. BUT the other guys - one got chicken fried steak which was ENORMOUS and loved it. The other had their chili and really liked that. Another had shrimp something - some kind of shrimp cocktail kind of thing and they loved that too.
The menu is arranged according to areas of Texas. So the Border section is mexican food, the "Great Plains" is their steaks. Gulf is seafood. One section has weird stuff like venison and boar!? Weird. But very Texas.
We'll probably be back again - it's close to golf and has an interesting menu.

Went to a friends Birthday Party last weekend had a good time listening to the live Music. Service was the worst...we decide to go inside and get our own drinks and food after waiting for 25 minutes outside for someone to wait on us. They have a big patio with maybe 25 tables and only two --yes waitress just 2 (two) for the whole area...really. They had some guy show up acting like he was a Manager or something, but basically pawned us off on someone else. For what they charge for dinner, I think we will go some where else next time. Maybe just do here for drinks.
Oh on top of everything else, our friends Paid Cash $$ for their Tab, but some how the waitress forgot and missed that , so they charged their credit card for the tab also. I have never been to a restaurant before that ask for your card before you even order, much less per-authorize/ scan your card just in case you forget to pay.....really ????

At first I avoided this place because it seemed like a tourist trap for unsuspecting snowbirds from the north who come in for Grapevine Mills. I was pleasantly surprised by the Porterhouse. My husband and I like to get a big Porterhouse and share it because it is like two steaks in one. i recognized the seasoning as Montreal. The beers are gi-normous and if you don't want to sit in the dining room or wait for a table, you can eat in the bar. They allow smoking at the bar, so steer clear if you don't want to be around it.

I am from Miami, FL and was taken here on my last day in Dallas. We have nothing like this in Florida and all I can say is that this place was truly AWESOME! Cheap prices, great Texan food, great service! Cami was our waitress and she was very helpful and kind. I don't know why this place has any negative reviews... From the moment I walked in, the experience was great! Definitely recommend and really 5 Stars! Thank you Cami and Love & War in Texas. I hope to be back someday and taste more of your delicious Texan food!!!!! :)

My wife and I hit up L&IT Tuesday night around eight. The service there was pretty good and attentive. If your a beer drinker you can order a DRAFT Shiner bock, black, blond or light which is very unheard of. Go for the large its 34oz of beer glory for $7.

We ordered the cornbread for starters, and funny enough its the shape of Texas. Which was gimmicky but works for this place.

The wife ordered the "El Paso" which consisted of 8oz of sirloin seasoned with peppercorn. She ordered her medium and it came out that way, which is always a good sign.

I ordered the Roasted wild boar, which was pretty good. However, I'm not sure if it was really wild at all. I could do with out the extra pork seasoning sauce but it tasted good with grilled onions and mushrooms. I also got the skillet potatoes which had a nice taste to them. Another reviewer mentioned they were spicy, I do not agree with that statement.

All in all, I enjoyed the service, the atmosphere and the food. I'll have to check out the bar next time or come by when they have a live band playing. I look forward to coming back here.

Maybe it was Sunday because it did not uphold to other reviews. Texas is known for chicken fried steak, I say skip it here. Corn on the cob was cold and the steak was bland as if made for the old folks home.

Do NOT do "the challenge". It's silly, and you will fail.

For a large group, order the 'feast' thing (comes with a mess of meat, and is more affordable then you think). Can easily feed 6 people.

What stands out for me about this place was the service. I LOVE when the staff says NOT to order something. (in this case a particular bar drink) Very honest and helpful. The party all loved their food, there were plenty of leftovers, and despite having failed to win a free t-shirt, I found myself happy with the experience and will return. Like someone else mentioned, the hostesses need something to do.

Went there 3/14/2013 on the way to a movie. Ordered the San Jacinto and the Panhandle. Steaks were tough, quail kabob and jalapeño kabob undercooked. Garlic mashies were starchy and seemed old, brown gravy was canned. Dinner salad was "tired" and some of the grilled food looked to have been cooked over a part of the grill that had a grease fire flare up going on. Highly not recommended!!

Love and War? I'm gonna go with war on this place! I was excited to try this joint, it had an old country feel to it and seemed exciting but that's about all it had! My server was really nice and hustled quick, so I can't knock him, but I really came here for good eats. I started off with pecan pie and ice cream for my appetizer and probably should have stopped there bc the pie tasted frozen and the ice cream had ice chunks(like when it melts and is refrozen again, yuck), but since it was on my jobs dollar I figured I go for their most expensive steak. Not a good decision at all! This was probably one of the worst steaks ever, very fatty and seasoned with mostly salt. I should've make the drive to Pappa Bros. steakhouse instead. Heck Saltgrass would have even been better!

I love, love, loved Love & War.

The hostesses could use some better training, but it was no biggie.

First of all, their sweet tea is incredible. And I am a bit of a sweet tea snob and addict. But y'all, this sweet tea is probably life changing.

Second, the appetizer we had was chips and queso with buffalo chili. Delicious! The waiter even brought two extra cups for little ones in our group so they wouldn't have to reach and struggle. Major props to him.

For main courses we had "the Hunt, Texas" which had soooo much food. The quail was possibly the best I have ever had, and we are a hunting family. The antelope was just right, and the venison sausage was a family favorite. We also had the New Braunfels Brautworst and y'all....amazing! Saurcraut and sausage both were delicious and the leftovers were even demolished the nest day. The kids in the group had sirloin and nachos, which were also polished off with gusto.

Finally, yes, it was a little pricy, but completely worth it. Our waiter kept those sweet teas filled and took good care of us. He didn't mention dessert, so I'll have to try one of those out next time. We will definitely be back!

Love and War in Texas is awesome. It truly is a "Texan" restaurant. The menu is broken down into regions of Texas with familiar areas like the panhandle, the great plains, hill country, the gulf, and the border. Each area of Texas on the menu features dishes from that area of Texas. For example, Gulf features spicy bay shrimp (which is very good) and other seafood items while the great plains features steaks and the border features tex mex dishes.

The atmosphere is very rustic and country, sporting a stage both in the main dining area and the bar (as well as the patio which is open season/weather permitting). They have live music on certain week nights as well as on the weekends and they usually make room in the dining room for dancing as well.

There is a nice selection of beer, mostly focused around varieties of Shiner (which is of course a Texas brewed beer), and it's usually nice and cold.

I haven't ordered everything on the menu but I can say that I've never been dissatisfied with anything that I've ordered either. Prices range anywhere from $10 a person on up to $30 or $40 depending on what you get. They also have feast options for groups (my friends and I like the Governor's feast).

I highly recommend the fried pickles as an appetizer (they are addicting) and some of my favorite dishes are the buffalo chili, the wild boar, the catfish, and the chicken fried steak (or chicken fried chicken). The shiner bock beans are good, so are the mashed potatoes. But the best side (and they'll let you substitute it into anything) are the country style skillet potatoes (although they are a little spicy).

Great food, good drinks, and an awesome atmosphere earn Love and War in Texas a 4 star review in my book. But it's not for everyone. It's a Texan thing.

I visited this location last year before moving to Texas with a take out order. The food was good then.

However, my wife and I visited tonight with the exception of the appetizer the food was horrible. The server did an ok job but really did not seem to pick up on the fact we were not happy. The overall service was poor.

The prime rib I ordered was not a prime rib. I don't believe the waiter knew the difference between a prime rib and sirloin steak or strip steak. I have had prime rib all over the country and nothing like this. In addition I asked what size the prime rib was and the waiter replied "10oz, maybe 12oz, or sometimes 14 oz. but its not very big it really depends" How do you not know the size of steak you are serving? The sides items were not very good either extremely salty beyond normal expectations.

My wife ordered chicken fajitas which parts of it were not very good either.

We told our waiter who assured me my steak was a prime rib which I have never seen on that thin and tough. He replaced one of my side items. No manager ever checked on our table or the service.

On the way out my wife informed the two young girls at the hostess check-in station of how bad the food was. The young lady looked puzzled and asked what my wife had. She told the young lady who replied "O' well I don't order that I only get the chicken tenders". What difference does that make?

The young lady went on to explain how she was also not surprised how bad the food was because they have a different cook every night there. Seriously?

The young lady also made no attempt to apologize or get a manager for us. She clearly did not seem to care one way or the other which speaks to the culture of the business i she is not trained to address this type of issue.

Seems like the service and food quality has gone down hill since my last visit.

This is my preferred dining spot after walking around Grapevine Mills. They used to have the Dublin Dr. Pepper before it was discontinued (insert sad face) and they have appetizers that need to be shared with no less than a party of 4 (try the queso, its amazing!)

The service is sub par so I deducted a star- I have never been blown away by any service I have received- but the food is well worth it.

*try and sit as far from the bar as possible if you are not a smoker- its not totally in-closed and they still allow smoking in that area.

Nothing really to write home about, but enough to write here. Maybe it was because we were with a large group...who knows. I ordered the smoked prime rib; my husband the wild boar.
Let's just get out of the way that the service was good throughout, so absolutely no issue there.
The wild boar was dry as a bone, even with the sauce. I was reminded of the old SOS (s#!% on a shingle, for you young 'uns), only without the toast. There was absolutely no flavor that would indicate it was game meat. It could've been anything.
My prime rib started out being thick enough, but slightly overcooked. I could've gone along with it being medium rather than medium rare, however the gawd-awful-overly-salty spice mix they slathered on it negated any taste of meat it might've had. The peppercorn sauce didn't help. I sent it back. Ten minutes later they bring me another one. It was LESS than 1/4" thick, which was a joke considering it was prime rib. Besides, there was NO way that could've been cooked to MR. They should be ashamed of themselves for attempting to serve a piece of meat that thin, calling it prime rib, and having the gall to charge $18. I didn't even bother with it and sent it back. Again. I would've been happy to leave it at that because at that point I was pretty sure someone was going to spit on it or something, but my husband insisted they bring me another. That one came and it was pretty much what I was expecting to begin with.
But after all that it was just....well....meh. It was decent for a sandwich the next day for lunch though. The sauce still didn't help.
The sides were totally forgettable and we didn't bother with dessert.
The high point: We both ordered Shiner Black and were served GINORMOUS mugs that I could barely lift. Surely there was at least two bottles worth in there, if not more. $8 for that, which is uncalled for in restaurants as far as I can tell.
Ok, so go for the giant schooners of beer, but don't stay for the food.

Wow! This place really must be trying to suck so hard....bc I'm not quite sure it's possible to achieve this level of failure by mere accident. I had high hopes for this place based on the cute kitschy Texas style old barn for a building. The interior is just as rustic and novel. But the food is just awful. It's all overpriced and of poor quality and taste. I don't know what else to say besides, I won't be back!

I went on fathers day and knocked out two plates of the all you can eat beef ribs. They have it every Sunday I think. The ribs are huge and really good. Shiner Bock beans, cornbread and coleslaw were awesome as well. Most of the shows I've seen there were memorable. L&W and Dixie house are the best authentic Texas resteraunts around here. The rest are posers.

I liked this place enough to bring my parents to eat here when they made the trek from South Texas to come visit us. I knew they'd get a kick out of the giant menu organized by regions and the bizarre variety of meat options offered therein.

As a vegetarian, I consistently order the fondue, which is not fondue in the traditional sense but is a skillet of flaming cheese and vegetables. Among the pictures I am most proud of in my life is the photo of me and the flaming cheese from Love & War in Texas. Also, they have Texas-shaped corn bread with honey butter so really, how can you beat that?

The food portions are stupid. So huge, it's silly that they offer desert. The hubs has devoured a steak and a chicken fried steak and loved both. Considering the regional menus offer everything from boar to tilapia to bratwurst, I'm willing to bargain that recent transports to DFW from other regions of Texas would be able to find good, homestyle cooking here.

It's definitely pricey, but who can put a price on eating fire? Not this girl.

Went here for Lunch today.

I had the Chicken Fried Chicken, it was decent. I wouldn't mind going back if I had to.
The Sweet tea was really different. My friend got the brisket, and said it was good. "Really god BBQ" sauce is how he described it.

So in my Opinion if someone says the BBQ sauce was good, then the Brisket was no good.

Worth a shot, but very - "Meh"

Nobody does Western themed restaurants like Texas. I made it a point to try as many of them as possible. Now all I need is a horse, a gun, and a cowboy boyfriend ;P

Wild boar quesadilla was really really salty...but it was wild boar which was sufficiently Texan and cool. Good thing I had some local Texan beer to wash it down with. Also the cobbler was to die for.

Mmmmm. Trust Texas to not be shy on the yummy fattyness!

Had dinner here with a large group, the worst part has been trying to pay and leave.
My entire party had paid and/or left, and I have yet to even see a bill.
The manager has been requested and we have essentially been ignored.
Finally paid, some of the staff apologized for the confusion, which we appreciated. But no word from the manager in any way shape or form.

The food here is very peppery. I'm guessing that pepper is the spice of choice.

Service was good. Food was good. I like pepper. The pecan pie is to die for.

I had the three different type of game. Liked that. Probably try the buffalo next time.

Will RTE.

We've been here twice and we really liked it both times. It's been pretty empty both times, but the service was good and the food came out pretty quickly.
I had a stuffed pepper the first time and it was fantastic! This second time I had the chicken fried steak and it wasn't amazing - the crust and gravy were good, but the meat itself needed seasoning. Hubby got the chopped sirloin sandwich and it was delish!
I wouldn't be opposed to going back to this place.

Yeah, this place was pretty sad regarding the food. Inside was very nice, used to be the Traildust (which I also hated). Service was good, menu was 'different', but food quality reminded me 'do not come back'

For tourists or mall visitors. Sorry guys, improve the food or continue to bleed. I think they do a decent bar business.

Love & War is a solid restaurant that specializes in serving different types of food specialties from different parts of Texas.

The food is fairly impressive. Mesquite grilled steaks, Fajitas, Bratwurst, wild boar, ribs, fish tacos--no matter what your Texas fancy, chances are, it's probably here. Now, the dishes aren't necessarily each the best of their kind, but they are all solid and done very well.

At Love & War, you may also order a Dublin Dr. Pepper, which is a rare-ish delicacy at restaurants, not to mention sit-down restaurants. But, again, very Texas.

I hope this doesn't sound like a cop-out, but the best thing I've had on the menu is the Cheeseburger. (I think they call it the Athens Cheeseburger, as the burger was said to be invented in Athens, Texas.) The jalapeno cheddar bun that it comes on is awesome. So are the shiner bock beans.

It looks like this would be an awesome place to eat with live music, but I've never been for this.

Also, this used to be a http://restaurant.com joint, for a brief time period. It's too bad this isn't true anymore. :-(

I'm guessing that if you come here when they have live entertainment it would be very special. But without, I'm going to say it is average.

Don't get me wrong, the food was good. But the tables were weirdly tall ( and I'm 6'1"), the lighting was poor, and service was average. Prices are decent, not great.

So, go if you want some fun. But there are plenty of options around when it comes to the food.

This place is nooo good at all.

I went around 7 on a friday... not very crowded. I should have taken that as a sign. We sat at the bar with maybe 5 other people... no bartender to be seen... then we saw him for a second... then he disappeared again. We probably sat there for 10 minutes before we got asked for our drink order.

I also asked for a menu... missing bartender.. so I asked a waitress. I ended up getting the fish tacos. They were HOT... like spicy hot.. but good. The tacos earned the extra star... but not good enough for a repeat visit.

I know they have a little stage for outdoor music.. may be nice to go for a few beers and that - but I doubt it.

The fact that this place serves Dublin Dr. Pepper (with real sugar) gets an automatic star. Now with that out of the way let's get down to the nitty gritty.

This place is ultra-Texas! When you want to celebrate being a texan ,or just being in Texas, you can mosey on over here. Their dishes range from a variety of meats commonly found in some pocket of this great state. They're fried, grilled, roasted, and spiced up to make your taste buds scream. There's nothing on this menu to cater to the vegetarian or anyone trying to watch their waistline. If you order their special guacamole they make it for you at your table.

Along with the old standards they have some wild game on the menu including wild boar, antelope, venison, and quail. They add to the usual display of side dishes with such foods as Shiner Bock beer beans, cilantro-lime rice, and "Texas caviar."

Despite living all my life in Texas I had to ask the waitress what Texas caviar was. Unfortunately they're only blackeyed peas. Come on! A place like this should be serving up a true ranch hand food, like jumbo-sized bull balls!

Their alcoholic menu is quite expansive. They serve beer, several Texas wines, and a large number of original mixed drinks. When we had a bachelor party for a friend of mine here we played the alcoholic alphabet game, which is really just giving the groom to be an alcoholic drink for every letter of the alphabet.

The place is decorated in the usual crazy Texas style: Wood paneling on walls, horseshoes, giant metal stars. Somehow they manage to make it not look tacky. The building itself looks rather ugly from the outside. Maybe it's just me. I guess I don't really have a thing for giant brown barns.

The waitstaff is very friendly, and somehow managed to cater to our crazy and eccentric tastes.

Don't worry. we tip big too.

After the funeral of a friend, we ventured West from our 'hood (to avoid the potential Tx/Ou crowds after the game) for a meal and a few (!) libations. Loved the experience. Really liked this place. Much better than a previous experience at the one in Plano.

Atmosphere is fun, real "Texas" rustic, big stars on the walls, enormous fireplace, and a slide tor the youngsters or any of us "young @ heart" that is no longer operational, but was probably once fun in the past. Huge open cavernous dining room, with what looked like some smaller rooms for groups toward the back, but still warm and a "feel good" kinda place. The separate bar area was very large, with TX/OU fans predominating, more OU fans than TX. Walked in, and all we heard was "GO Sooners, GO". We avoided this for sure. Sat in the main dining room in a comfy booth.

Menu is quite extensive; steaks, ribs, burgers, catfish, chicken fried steak, chili, apps, etc. & weird stuff like boar and antelope...good for the adventuresome. We are wimps however, so didn't try any of those. (Saw some amazing onion rings walk by, wish we had tried these!)

We stuck to the basics; catfish for me, substituting the coleslaw for the home fries, and BF ordering the BBQ brisket with Texas baked beans & cole slaw.. Service quick, prompt and friendly. House wine and tall frosty beer delivered on the spot. Entrees came out equally prompt.

Large portions of our entrees. Catfish was plump, properly breaded and fried. 4 large pieces. Loved the home fries which the server warned was spicy; and they were, and I LOVED it. YUM. The accompanying tartar sauce was pretty good. BF's sliced BBQ brisket was awesome. He kindly put a slice on my plate and I salivated. It was tender, moist, and the BBQ sauce was the right level of spicy. I think I would order this next time. Meat was soooo good, wish I could have sneaked another piece off his plate, but I did enjoy my Catfish.

Okay....here goes...my entree was served with cornbread in the shape of Texas. Soooo Cute. I munched down on El Paso first, then wandered down to the lower Rio Grande Valley, bit off a part of Brownsville & South Padre Island, travelled up to Corpus Christi and finally ended at Galveston. The Panhandle, Northern Texas (Dallas) and East Texas were saved. I was full. How fun that was, BF and I named all the cities along the way "I had eaten". What a hoot !! An exciting afternoon, eating my way all through Texas !!

Great place, we loved it. Service was excellent even on a busy Saturday with folks watching the game. A great resolution to a sad time with the loss of a friend; but we celebrated life today! Our friend would have been proud, he would have enjoyed imbibing in a beer or two or three !!! We will be back, soon I hope.

I went to L&W today to see a friend's band (Grant Jones and the Pistol Grip Lassos) and had dinner before hand. Its a great place to see a band, the service is great, and they have Franconia Beer! But the food sucks! I've had the ribs one other time and brisket today and the meat is too dry and the bbq is blah! There's 50 items on the menu. Just pare down the menu and make the food better!

(Although, my sister says that the Panhandle Steak cooked Medium is good.)

It's always nice to find authentic Texan food. That's what this is. In a way it reminds me of our favorite Texan food joint, Mesa Ranch in Austin which I highly recommend, as well.

Here you will find real authentic Dublin Dr Pepper, the original recipe made with Imperial Pure Cane Sugar instead of that nasty HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup, yuck).

We brought home two unique items for Mom's Dr Pepper collection. They had 10 ounce bottles with a red cap which we have never seen. And get this, while the salt shakers are Corona beer bottles, the pepper shakers are Dr Pepper (Dublin) bottles from the 114th anniversary of Dr Pepper. Well, considering that our mother collects all things Dr Pepper, she noted to the waiter that her bottle was not the 114th anniversary edition like the pepper shakers. Our waiter said that they don't have any more of those and at that point gave our Mom the pepper shaker itself. She said "No, I am not going to take your pepper shaker!" The waiter insisted and said "No, I am giving it to you, put it in your purse".. Haha. So now we have a Dr Pepper 114th anniversary pepper shaker from Love & War in Texas.

All's fair here ya'll! :)

What a fun little bit of Texas. I have been here twice and I can say that when the music plays and the beer flows nobody is frowning.

I found the service to be excellent the first time with the manager pitching in to make sure that our table was happy and that was a good dinner.

This past weekend I went for lunch and the server was just OK, the food was good, huge serving size filled you up, but was really over the top.

The environment inside and out made me think this place would be $20 per head lunch, but try more like $8 for the entree.

I'll be back with out of town guests that will enjoy the sheer Texasness of it.

The pure entertainment value of this place inspired me to write this review. In town on business and sick of eating in the same hotel restaurant everyday, my colleagues and I decided to grab some dinner off property. This place looked fun and boasted live music so we decided to venture in. Our first visit was on a rockin' Saturday night where they party 'til the break of 10:00pm. Woo hoo!

Seriously, when they're ready to close, they're ready to close. We were just finishing our meal when our check was dropped on the table at quarter to 10. OK, I get it, but it was even better when we went back for all you can eat rib night. They close at 9 and we came in around 8. Vacuums were running and the place was all but deserted. It was almost comical how the server rolled her eyes and threw a mini tantrum as she showed us to our table. Even better when another guy came in at 8:30pm. I've never seen such fast service and the check arrived in plenty of time at 8:45pm. Really funny!

A couple of the menu items are really good. The corn on the cob and mashed potatoes are awesome and so is the "steamed" broccoli (which is actually full of butter...yum). The brisket and fish tacos are both wonderfully spicy and delicious. Everything else was just average.

I will probably go back the next time I'm looking for an excuse to spend the next day in the gym. Oh, and also good for those who need to make it home before curfew.

Dear god! This place exemplifies every Texas stereotype as soon as you pull up. Wagon Wheels: got 'em. Belt buckles: everywhere. Beers and portions of humongous sizes...yep, they've got those too, because EVERYONE knows everything is always bigger in Texas.

Went here with about 35 people from work. Wasn't expecting much but you know what...it wasn't horrible. Service was great considering we had two huge tables of people who kept throwing drink orders at the staff. Most people seemed to order the steak but since I don't eat a ton of red meat, went with the grilled shrimp, which I know was a gamble being in Texas, but they weren't bad....they were cooked perfectly and served with black-eyed peas (which I think they called Texas Caviar), rice and grilled veggies.

I am sure there are MUCH better restaurants in the area, but it wasn't a bad place for a group of co-workers (most from out of state) to gather and grub.

We had a corporate function here. The atmosphere is so much fun, especially if the people are not from Texas, and the place is huge. It looks like a fancy barn.
But the food was...well, it was meat, with some more meat, and a side of meat. Don't get my wrong, I like meat, but this was just too much for me. Women beware!

This is a pretty darn good steak restaurant. Pretty much take your pick of cuts, they're all good.

Located in the old traildust building big firepits grill up great steaks.

If that's your bag, live country music is in there all the time. The bar is great, and a fun place to hang out before you sit, or even over your meal.

Also, do yourself a favor and get some of the grilled corn on the cob, if available. It is *insane*. As good as the steaks are, you would seriously be missing a huge part of this without some of this grilled/smoked corn. It is *ridiculous*.
