Just moved to WA from FL. Â My first meal was here and I just keep coming back! Â All but a few in management are volunteers since a percentage of profits go to charity. Love the concept, love the food, love the staff..... except for one. Â I wouldnt say anything but she has the same arrogant attitude as she always does on every visit. But please frequent this wonderful establishment :-)
Review Source:The food here is mediocre, I am not sure if the Renton curve has been too generously applied in other reviews or if I had the misfortune of dining on "off" days 3 times in a row because judging from other reviews that seem to hail the food here like the second coming of Christ.
First time I went, I had the French dip, portions were good but it was something along the lines of what you would find at a Fred Meyer or below average deli.
Second time, breakfast, can only be best described as Ikea's restaurant quality. Â Not that it's a terrible thing, I like eating at Ikea once in awhile but the prices were not Ikea prices.
Third time, dessert. Â A slice of coconut chocolate cake, loaded with so much sugar that it reminded me of the usual diabetes in a box that you find at your generic neighborhood franchise grocer. Â There were also not much favor from the chocolate or coconut in something that was so overly sweet. Â I figured since their other dining options feel like an afterthought, perhaps they are strong in their desserts department, couldn't be more wrong. Â In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually drove to Safeway up the street and purchased goods from there to resell...
So why the five stars? Â Well, we have established that eating here is a terrible mistake, what isn't a terrible mistake is what this place actually provides as an overall package. Â A truly warm and comfortable place to hang out for drinks, live music and other venues. Â I am as not religious as a non-religious person can get, but I find the staff very welcoming and the atmosphere filled with none of the usual pretentiousness and self righteousness that one finds in a church.
If they can fix the food, it will be perfect, nevertheless definitely a good place to hang out and for a good cause.
This place is the restaurant of my people! Literally. Ok. Maybe not literally but I am ELCA Lutheran and Luther is my homeboy so...
Anyway, this restaurant is an old converted ELCA Lutheran church. What the heck are ELCA Lutherans? They're the liberal folks--the ones who are pro-gay marriage and have even approved gay clergy. They also do a lot of community outreach to help end poverty and homelessness. This is important because I also want to mention that Luther's Table is a non-prof.
I love that it's a non-prof but I didn't include that into my rating. Instead, I'm rating food and service. The service is good and the staff are friendly. The food is effing delicious! I had the Luther's Plate (I think that's what it's called). It had three different types of sausages and came with potato salad. I was hugely disappointed the potato salad was German potato salad. Instead it was large chunks of undercooked red potatoes and a mayo sauce. Did not like. I really loved how they cooked the sausages though. Heaven! And you get picked onion and two different kinds of mustards. So good.
The restaurant is located in Renton which is a pretty far commute. I will probably come back here but since it's so far away, my visits won't be frequent.
Had a Reuben sandwich and really enjoyed it. Also they have a great selection of cakes. I had a slice of the chocolate banana cake and was in heaven. The weather was sunny outside so they had the doors open so you could sit at a table outside. Service was friendly. Â This place was a nice find. Had a really nice stained glass window in one area. This place used to be a Lutheran Church many moons ago. Now you can get a cold beer if you want, or nice sandwich. Looked like they had wireless, as I did see someone surfing on their laptop. I did not try and verify if they had wireless, but looks like it did. Glad I stopped by for lunch.
Review Source:I really love coming to this cafe! the waitresses here really awesome, and they're super nice!!
The First time I heard about this place was from a former classmate of mine and she brought over a barbecue chicken flat bread Pizza and it was so delicious! The next day I go to Luther's and I order the same pizza. Its literally heaven! I know food when its fresh and it was definetly fresh! the coffee is really good too,as too the italian soda's.
Its rarely common to see local highschoolers come here, because its so close to the school.I love the live music! Also you can see so much talent in renton that is broadcast to locals here and its great!
I'll be coming back every time!
a great place and addition to the downtown area of Renton. Â Solid soups, sandwiches and salads, as well as comfort foods. Â Don't go expecting high end french food, but it's always good and the ambience is very friendly and hospitable.
It's a good place for lunch, a cup of coffee, or even a beer/glass of wine if you're so inclined.
Foodwise, I'd give 4 stars, but I bump them up for the community contribution.
This is our favorite place to meet in Renton for a light meal, snack, coffee. Â Conveniently located for my family and friends, halfway between Bellevue and Tacoma. Â Easy parking. Â I like the atmosphere, eclectic, cozy, clean. Â Short menu, for breakfast we had the daily scramble and oatmeal, both were very good. Â We were not rushed, able to relax and linger. Â Staff is very friendly, as was the clientele when we visited. Â I highly recommend it.
Review Source:An all around good place, and that's not just the food I'm talking about here! Â They are a great non-profit and really give back to the local community. Â Most people working here are volunteers and tips are not accepted, but donations are welcome. Â Live music, beer on tap, and an inviting atmosphere in downtown Renton make this a great place for a work lunch or evening out.
Review Source:A little on the pricy side for my college student budget, but the quality of food and the ambience totally make up for it.
As many other people have already mentioned, the restaurant is staffed mainly by volunteers who don't accept tips. Rather, you can make a donation to whatever cause they are supporting at the moment. If this isn't altruistic, I don't know what is.
You can park on the street or in the few spaces behind the restaurant. Upon entering you'll see the counter/menu and that's where you can order the food, take your number, and a seat. Water is self serve and if the weather allows, you can even eat outside.
I attend Open Mic on Thursdays to see my friends perform. The community that shows up on these evenings is absolutely wonderful. It's kind of like being around a campfire watching everyone perform and feeling all warm and nice on the inside, haha.
They recently just got a pumpkin ale which is awesome and their french dip is really all I get.
I'm a fan for the live music, people, community development emphasis, and arts-scene. I like to order a custom half salad with avocado, bell pepper, and carmelized onion with honey mustard on the side. Occasionally I order a side of red potatoes; those come out between cooked and uncooked depending on who's cooking, but I just let them know and they fix it. Â
Recently we enjoyed Oktoberfest complete with live music, raffle prizes, beer tokens, and other fixin's. I shared the pretzel w/mustard. Noms!
This is a truly unique and interesting concept that's inviting and friendly at the same time. I went for a walk after my dentist fillings at 4th & Morris and wanted a coffee. I haven't been in this area since I graduated from RHS across the street so that was cool. The menu sounded awesome so I'll have to come back and try that at some point. I had to take a second to soak in all they have to offer; from the bar, to the menu, to the coffee, to the pastries, to the event nights... I think the students are lucky to have this nearby!
Review Source:Socially conscience, great service, excellent food, and a nice vibe.
Went for lunch with a friend. Had the Veggie Greek flatbread pizza - awesome!! Checked out the list of live music, board game night, open mic night, and various other activities. Great place and just a few minutes from work...win!
Is it just me or do volunteers give you a better experience at a place than people who are actually paid to do their job?
In any case, the folks at Luther's Table really care about the whole place, it shows. Cozy couches around, tables and booths, nothing like getting out of the rain and walking into this place.
This is my new favorite lunch spot in Renton, if only for the soups. I've been here a couple times and have gotten the soup of the day, both times. First time, it was a hearty beef stew. Second time, a rich clam chowder. Each time, the soup was accompanied by a crisp homemade crouton. Fantastic long simmered flavors both times. Flatbreads are also fresh and tasty.
Never worry about tip. There are self-serve water stations, but usually, if you're running low, someone will top you off. Whatever floats your boat. The people here really trust their customers, and it's one of the most inviting cafes I've been to.
And yeah, they have a nice selection of beers. FTW.
Really cool thing going on here- and whodathunk it'du happened in Renton? Â Great people, great service, great beer and great mission. Â I was a performer here, and the stage, and folks helping were professional, knowledgeable and had excellent equipment. Â Really, really enjoyed the atmosphere, vibe and setting. Â Next time I'll try some of the food offerings- but the beer suited me well. Â Only four taps, but good beer selections.
Review Source:A great idea that works. It is wonderful how the old historical church was incorporated into this restaurant (bricks, pews and stain glass window). I was very happy with the food which was reasonably priced and large portioned. I was able to share my dish (French dip) with a friend. I recommend this warm sandwich. Others at my table also shared their wrap which was large and tasty (according to them). The service was fast and personable - the manager accommodated our sharing with extra service ware without our asking. The place also has a great mission of helping the community - also with the support of volunteers.
Review Source:First time in was today and was a let down.
I LOVE the idea of the place with volunteers and giving back to our community.  A church approaching ministry and giving back in a unique way is pretty cool! The  location is very close to work and home, the interiors were inviting so I stopped in today to get some lunch to go and grab a to-go menu for the office. Â
I remember reading the interesting article when the place opened, have driven by 1000x, and remember summer nights with the doors rolled up looked very appealing. Â So I was looking for a home cooked lunch today. Â I saw the sign and parked right in front. Â The volunteer was nice, and explained a little more of Luther's. I placed an order to go- for the dailyl roast special, and both volunteers said it was 'DELICIOUS'. Â With 2 rave reviews, it HAD to be good! Â Today was beef. While waiting I also picked out a white chocolate-macadamia nut brownie. I waited for a few minutes and the order was ready to go.
I took a couple bites of the white chocolate/mac nut brownie. Â It was VERY cold, kind of hard to break off, super sweet, but didn't have much taste.
When I opened the to go box, the roast beef was paper thin with 2 slices. Â I'm ok with smaller portions as it's a non-profit. Â But the 'roasted red potatos' were also paper thin, and may have been roasted once upon a time, but were definitely not roasted today or for my order. Â The potato's, gravy & meat must have been microwaved and heated up for quick delivery. Â The potato's were limp, dehydrated, cold and chewey, and the gravy was also in clumps on top of the meat and literally peeled off un-naturally. Â The meat may have been microwaved too, as it was VERY chewy.
For the $16 I dropped on the roast beef lunch and brownie, I was hoping it would at least taste good even with smaller portions, but was sorely disappointed.
I literally hit a sandwich shop afterwards to get something to eat & threw out my lunch from Luther's.
Just my two cents,
Great ambiance and great food, and nice to know it is for a great cause. The Sinner sandwich was good, but the French Dip wins hands down. Amazing sandwich. The roasted potatoes were very good, but the roasted vegetables had been overcooked. Â Great coffeehouse atmosphere with open mic nights, conversations, book clubs, etc. Not to be missed!
Review Source:Hallelujah! Â Another good place to eat in Renton! Â
Luther's Table has an interesting menu of items - sort of pub meets comfort food, perhaps. Â Salads, soups, sandwiches kind of fare. Â I think it is reasonably priced ($40-something for three of us to split an appetizer and each have entrees). Â
Here's the hook: the place is for charity. Â The proceeds go to a local church's community and church programs. Â So that's a good thing! Â
Also, be forwarned... the staff is 50% volunteer, so be patient and kind!
Thanks to Yelp, a coworker & I tried this place for lunch yesterday.
I love the mission of this place & the ambiance is great. The prices seem pretty affordable to me (plus the menu with prices is on-line so it shouldn't shock anyone...) But, really, it's a restaurant/cafe & the most important thing is the food.
Luther's Table amazed me. I had a delicious Sinner sandwich & cup of chicken noodle soup. That soup was seriously amazing. It tasted just like what my momma would've made - if my mom made homemade chicken noodle soup! I couldn't help but finish every last bit. And the little breadstick it came with was just perfect to help me soak up all of the yummy broth! My friend had an amazing Caesar salad that she raved about for hours after we left. Serving size was a little smaller than we expected but we did order half sizes and it actually turned out to be just right for lunch.
We'll be back very soon!
I went  on a Friday night to hear a friend perform music. The place is located at an odd intersection, but the GPS helped us find it. We enjoyed the ambiance- friendly staff, clean facilities, good food. I definitely hope to come back and have already told people about it and encouraged them to go.
P.S. If you have Andrew Potsko perform more often I'll definitely be back more often!
What a cute place! Renton, and everywhere else could use more places like this ... run mostly by volunteers. "Tips" are actually donations to charity.
Luther's Table has simple sandwiches, snacks, and soups. They also run a full espresso stand and have yummy dessert bars!
But what I LOVE about this place is Trivia night. I think it's every other Wednesday night ... Free to join in, super low key, run by a fun host, and prizes for lots of people (real simple silly prizes ... but it's just for the fun)! Our group of friends has a blast at trivia night!
Keep it up, Luther's Table ....
I love the coffe house vibe and the live music. Good beer and wine selection. Â The food is good. My soup was fresh, tasty, homemade. The best thing is it's a nonprofit; the profits go to transitional housing for vets who are having a hard time. Â The wait staff are mostly volunteers so no haterz please. Â Leave your snobby, judgmental attitudes at home and enjoy this place for what it is: a nonpretentious hangout that helps make this world a better place.
Review Source:First thing first: Â If your going to use 2nd Ave S to get to Luther's, do really go the posted speed limit or you will get a ticket. Â My friend got a ticket. Â Anyway, I really enjoyed the decor of the restaurant and my latte was pretty good. Â Their salad (one salad is called something like The Chef Meets the Cob). Â Staff is friendly.
Review Source:UPDATE:
I wanted to take a minute to update my review - I' was contacted by management and they really wanted to make it up to me (I haven't had time to get back and take them up on their offer). Â What was nice was that they did clarify that right around the time that I had visited, the menu was in the process of being changed to eliminate some of the confusion that led to the issues in my original review. Â The fact that they wanted to make sure that my not-great experience there was a one-time anomaly made me happy to come back and add another star to the review.
ORIGINAL:
I was really excited to eat here. Â Not only do I think the mission of the business is great, but the food smelled incredible when I walked in.
However, the two entrees I ordered to go were both given to me without items listed om the menu. Â Not to mention that the "entree" size was TINY. Â I'm ok with that since I don't need a huge plate of food, but since there were items missing from what was promised on the menu, my two entrees that were supposed to be for two meals were actually barely enough to fill me up for one meal.
I debated complaining but the idea of "to-go" is not eating in the building so I was already home. Â Unfortunately, the food wasn't very tasty either (another disappointment) so I didn't see the point. Â I wouldn't have wanted a free meal because it didn't taste good. Â
I still think the idea of the business is great, and the inside and decor is really good looking. Â I might just be too picky of an eater for them.
Have been there alone, with a friend, and today with most of the family, and the feedback is consistent: this place is fabulous! The food, the ambiance, the prices - a great place to be and to eat.
To specifics: every version of the flatbread has been excellent (have tried three different ones). The sandwiches, Luther's Plate (sausage), salads, meatloaf, and the Bread and Spread plate all got raves. In particular, their warm German potato salad is exquisite.
I'd down-grade them to 4.5 stars for the Mac and Cheese, which was made with penne and was not cheesy enough for my taste. The crumbled bacon on top was decent, but I'd like a bit more texture (bigger pieces) and mouth-feel. That said, others who had it really liked it: maybe I'm not a penne guy, and the blue cheese mac at Oceanaire and the Mac'n Yeeze at Plum Bistro have probably spoiled me. I'd try it again if I were assured they'd tweaked it, but the good news is that there's so much other great stuff to enjoy, I don't feel restricted in my choice.
Like Arnold, I'll be back...
I just love this place. Â But I have to admit that I have never tried their food other than a slice or two of the banana bread (which was fine). Â I stop by usually once a week in the mid-afternoon to have some tea and finish out my work day. Â they have free WI-fi so I can work at one of the tables and enjoy some tea. Â They have plenty of space and the workers are wonderful. Â Everyone is very friendly and service oriented. Â I have stopped going to Starbucks - Luther's table is my new afternoon escape!
Review Source:I'm not a Christian, heck, I am no fan of religion, but I felt very welcomed and cared for here in a way that you won't find at any other cafe or bar.
Its could be because its staffed with mainly volunteers and they don't accept tips. Â In any case, they had a good vibe going on. Â There was a pretty good crowd for a Saturday night. Â I noticed that there were even a few people who came in to enjoy the free performance that were probably "down on their luck" sorts of fellows, but all were treated kindly and that struck me all the more at what an interesting idea a church-cafe-bar-performance-community space could be. Â
So what was this non-religious lady doing at Luther's?  To see my pops perform on Luther's stage in my hometown (I live in the big city of Seattle now) and enjoy a bite to eat  on a hot summer night.
They plan to invite other local musicians and performers of all sorts and will even have an open mic. Â
The space is great with a big panel that opens up to give you a better view of Renton H.S. which has had its facade preserved from the 1900's although its been remodeled in recent years. Â I've always loved that building.
The food was great. Â I kept wondering how they managed to have such great food if their staff are volunteers. Â Who is the chef? Â How did they compose the menu? Â How do they ensure consistency?
I had the Greek flat bread and a side salad of the crudite panzenella that was too die for. Â I think I could have just had a big one of those salads and been fine actually. Â My bf had The Hunter's plate and I got a few bites. Â I really enjoyed that they had pickled onions on the side and two kinds of mustard. Â I think they could have upped the beer and wine selection, but it was decent.
In order to keep costs low, besides the volunteer staff, you order up front and fill your own drink. Â However, I noticed that the volunteers were still incredibly attentive so you pretty much ended up having someone wait on you. Â
So, who knows when I'll be back since, like I said, I live in the big city of Seattle now, but if you're in Renton, come check it out. Â Even if you're not religious.
I heard about this place from my friend on facebook, and it sounded like a cool Christian bar. Â I absolutely had to check this out. Â
It was very cool, especially their mission in downtown Renton. Â Where else can you get a delicious beer on tap, gourmet flatbread (greek veggie or proscuitto for only $5??!!), and talk to the bartender (who's not allowed to accept tips!) about Jesus? Â Very neat place and I can't wait to be back. Â
Their social menu included open mic night, sermon & worship night with communion (and rumor has it a free glass of wine), and live music!
Great prices, drinks, food and service! Â Very needed in Renton! LOVE you guys!
Wonderful addition to downtown Renton! Tried the Greek veggie flatbread (companions had 2 other flatbreads and all looked yummy) with the hippie salad. Yum!
Great food, drink selection, friendly folks working (some are volunteers, and local pastors pour your beer, which you can enjoy while sitting in an old church pew. Gotta love this kind of ministry!) Cute place, I will be back!!
Luther's Table is a great find in downtown Renton. Â Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and events in the evening it is a great alternative to your average coffee shop, cafe or pub.
Luther's Table has a casual, welcoming vibe and is a place where you can sit and talk with the other patrons or the fantastic staff. Â
Call ahead and reserve the back room for your book club, condo association meetings, or study group. Â The coffee is great, the brews are local and the staff is friendly.
Try the flat breads! Oh my, they are heaven sent!
