On a hot day after a walk it was nice to walk into a cool and comfortable place. Lots of dark wood and with a skylight. You seat yourself and the waitperson comes over within a few minutes.
I ordered the fish sandwich with sweet potato fries. The batter on the fish was crisp and the haddock was flaky and tender. The only downside is that it was $10.95 for the sandwich plus $1 extra for sweet potato fries. It was a bit more than I thought I'd pay for lunch.
My friend's turkey wrap looked pretty good.
From the funeral home's old garage to a beautiful Irish Pub this the transformation that McBride's took. The wood work and décor in the place are absolutely gorgeous. It is a very comfortable place to sit down and grab a pint. The food is also great, I haven't tried any of the meals but have had the burgers twice and have loved their rich juicy deliciousness both times. If you are not in the mood for beer, I would recommend the "6 Feet Under," it is hands down the best White Russian I have ever had!
Although they have great food and drinks, I think the best thing I like about McBride's is the charm and the feel. They regularly have an acoustic guitar player singing classic Irish songs. Music or not, it is just a relaxing place. At 10pm they maintain their funeral home routes and do "Last Call," where they honor and say a few words about someone who has passed, sometimes it is a local person and sometimes it is a famous person. Regardless it ends with a bar wide toast.
If you are in the Wayland Square area or even if you are not stop by McBride's to enjoy a beverage and maybe some food.
The food menu needs some work in terms of variety (no gravy for mash potatoes?), and I've left McBride's hungry on both occasions. The drinks are good, but I think needs more variety. You're on the east side of Providence. Being an  Irish bar shouldn't be your main hook.
The music is good and I enjoy the occasional live entertainment.
What a gem! Â Met some friends here for dinner and drinks, love the seat yourself factor. Â I also loved the outdoor patio, wished it was warmer as I would have taken advantage of it.
Decent beer selection, they had some of my favorites, that kept me happy. Â For dinner I, of course, had to get the Reuben with corned beef. Â Can we say amazing?! The corned beef was so tender and chopped up bit size, making this monster easy to eat. Â Jam packed with corned beef! Â Fries were decent. Â My husband was very happy with the Sheperds Pie he ordered, it looked delicious.
I too, loved the toast at 10 for lost loved ones. Â Adds a special touch to the place and makes you feel like you are part of the family. Â
I will certainlly be back!
I have been back many times and this place just doesn't do it for me. Â Here is why:
The food is over priced and not good. Â
It is always way too bright in here.
It is always too quiet.
The piped in Irish muzak is cheesy.
I just feel it completely lacks personality. Â It is a great location and with some changes could be an awesome spot.
The bar is beautiful, the food was fantastic (I got a Grilled Chicken Sandwich with Pesto Mayo, Balsamic Dressing, Mozz, Lettuce and Tomato with Sweet Potato Fries) and they make strong drinks- on top  of having a fairly extensive Irish and non-irish beer list. They also have a moment of silence at 10p every night for those who have passed away, which is really nice. It's also in Wayland Square which is a beautiful area of Providence.
Review Source:My favorite part about McBrides is the Irish music they were playing at lunch. Its a nice twist on an Irish Pub because its new, sleek and clean. Friendly service and decent beverage selection. I'm not a big fan of their food, but then again I'm not the biggest fan of Irish food. I think its a little pricey-then again its Wayland Square. I have always enjoyed their wings!
Review Source:This review is based strictly on the bar, as a friend and I visited for an early weekend drink. I stuck with Guinness, but they had a large selection of beer, and the bartender was friendly
The atmosphere is nice, you feel as though you've stepped into an upscale Irish pub, yet still casual. Â I must say the wordwork inside the building is gorgeous.
While chatting with the bartender I discovered that they have a last call every night when you can toast a loved one. Â I look forward to coming back and experiencing that as well as what looks to be a superb patio for when the weather breaks!
I was not really a fan of this place. Had the clam chowder and it was just ok. I ordered the baked haddock and it was dry and flavorless as were the mashed potatoes. The flour-less tort dessert was quite nice so it wasn't all bad. Service was ok, a little slow at times and it was not that busy. I think this place has potential, and my companions enjoyed their food. Undecided on whether I would return.
Review Source:I really got lucky coming to Providence to visit Elie. Â I got to go to a record number of places in my 24 hours here. Â We met a friend of ours (and coworker of Elie's) on the street, and he told us to join him for drinks with another coworker. Â We plodded on the sidewalk, all 3 of us, side by side, and made our way to McBride's. Â
They gave us a table right away, since there were not 4 seats at the bar, and the waitress was super friendly and accommodating. Â She enumerated the many sexy beers they had on tap, and we picked our choices. Â I perused the menu and saw really yummy looking choices, including shepherd's pie nachos. Next time:)
I really enjoyed the ambiance here, and the place is very spacious. Â
Totally a cool hang out, and again, if I lived in Providence (unlikely to ever happen) I would so chill here.
Pro: they serve beer
Con: the beer list is poor
Pro: Wayland Square needed a bar
Con: Wayland Square did not need this bar.
Altogether too bright, too canned, and too scrubbed for an "Irish" pub; the overall feel skirts along "family restaurant."
And yes, there isn't much in the way of nearby competition, so any port in a dry storm if you need a drink. But given the chance, you could end up almost anywhere else and find a better beverage list and more character.
Just went here the other evening to meet up with a friend. Â The pub had mixed reviews so I wasn't sure what to expect. Â I think the lay out of the restaurant is really nice. Â They have a large bar area with a mixture of tables and then a dining area. Â Someone earlier commented that it was small...I guess if you compare it to a popular chain restaurant or something it is but I thought the size was just right for a local hang out. Â We sat in the dining area (it's seat yourself which is nice because you can pick your own table) and I was a little envious of those sitting in the bar area because you could see the TVs and you're right by the bar - or at least just a couple steps from it.
Our food was great. Â I had fish and chips and the piece of fish was giant! Â The batter was nice and light and the fish was cooked perfectly - not dripping with grease and placed in paper like so many places I've eaten at. Â I ended up taking half of the fish home since the portion was so huge.
The noise level did get a little high as it got later, but not any louder than your normal bar. Â The place was full the entire time I was there but not overly crowded. Â They had a trivia night that I might venture out with friends to try out. Â Just seems like a fun place to hang out any time of the week. Â It fits in perfectly with the variety of restaurants in Wayland Square.
This pub doesn't feel like an Irish pub because everything is brand new. Â It reminds me of what an Irish pub would be in Disney or Epcot Center. Â
While the staff is very nice, the lights are way too bright and the "Irish" Â Pandora music can get repetitive and annoying. Â I had a turkey Reuben sandwich that was very tasty along with a kettle one martini which was only so-so. Â
One nice thing I noticed is that they "sell" the chairs and bar stools to support a charitable cause. (For a specific donation you get your name engraved on a metal plaque that they affix to the back of the seat.)  I would go back if someone really wanted to go there,  but the bright, pre-fabricated atmosphere really  turns me off.
McBride's is an outstanding neighborhood pub in a great location. The menu is fantastic and you must, despite a potential aversion to eating lamb, try the lamb sliders. They in themselves are worth the trip to Wayland Square. They have plenty of beers on site and the rest of the food is pretty darn tasty too!
The servers are always kind, polite, and notice before you do that you might need a refill. I've been here a number of times and had a number of different servers and I can fully endorse each of them as excellent, thoughtful, and contributing to an overall great experience.
My one gripe? It's a little small. But it's also a pub: it's supposed to be small. Please don't let that stop you from trying it because I really do find this as one of my top 3 favorite bars in Providence.
McBride's is a quaint Irish Pub conveniently located in Wayland Square. (tons of cute little shops in the area) There are special events on certain nights, so definitely check their website for the schedule! Sometimes they have live performers or trivia nights and they even watch the Pat games! (or so I've heard.) I had the mac & cheese (with Irish bacon in it) and it was phenomenal. But if you don't like mac & cheese, which is crazy, they also have a wide range of food items from calamari to thin crust pizza and the traditional sliders. If you're looking for more authentic Irish fare, they have plenty of options for that as well! :)
Review Source:McBrides = McBadass
This place is totally solid. I've been here a few times, and I've reserved judgment until now because I take Wayland Square and Irish pubs very seriously. I don't mess around when it comes to beer whilst in my beloved WS.
It entirely passes muster. Now, decor and atmosphere are some of the most important things in a bar/pub for me, because I don't always go to eat. It feels like a real pub--nice big bar, good stools, a dividing wall between the bar and the eating area. It's cozy while still being streamlined.
I've had food and drinks here, and it's good stuff. I like their appetizer menu...I take my nibblies and munchies as seriously as I take my beer.
And the beer! Above average selection of draught beers, and the most recently, they were offering Guinness' Black Lager for $3.50. Yup, I'll have that. Twice.
In other news, a toast is held every evening for someone who is recently (or not so recently) deceased, they do trivia on Wednesdays at nine, the bathrooms are clean, and the bartenders are friendly without being overbearing.
You want to know what's not cool, an "Irish" pub that you can't get a drink in.
Stopped in the other night after dinner in PVD for a pint. Waited a bit at a table by the bar, and a waitress came over to hand us menus. Â I mentioned that we had just stopped in for drinks, and she leaves, takes the menus with her, and never comes back. Â No one else does either. Â
Gussied up decor and canned Irish music aside, if you can't get a pint of Guiness, it isn't any kind of pub I want to spend time in.
Swing and a miss.
Great place for a Guinness, but alas just not a big fan of the food.
I like the look and feel of McBrides. Â It has a pretty cool atmosphere, and the story of how the place was formed is pretty interesting too. Â I wish I dug the food more, but it just wasn't the best Irish pub fare that I've tried. Â The service is pretty good, but sometimes it takes a while to be served. Â
I would gladly come back for a drink, especially since it's right in my 'hood. Â The patio is a cool place to relax on Summer evenings, and well, maybe eventually I'll find a food item that I really enjoy. Â You never know.
Went here for the first time last night...and it's great! Â We had reservations for 14 people, and 19 showed up. Â The owners came out to help us move tables. Â They weren't upset at all. Â The server even offered to keep our orders separate...with a smile on her face...she didn't show any annoyance.
As for the food... Â I split two appetizers with a friend: Â the Irish spring rolls and lamb sliders. Â And...I'm definitely going back. Â The food tasted fresh and tasted "authentic," meaning, you could taste the lamb in the sliders...you can taste the corn beef and mashed potatoes inside the flaky phyllo dough.
They also had a live musician who was rather good. Â Several times I forgot he was live and thought the radio was on.
Yes, they do have a parking lot. Â I missed that fact and parked down the street.
Just went here for drinks and to sit on their patio. Decent beer selection, and an intersting mixed drink menu - including a wide variety of whiskey/coffee combos. Though I didn't eat any of it, their menu had a few traditional irish dishes, but was mostly a sampling of typical american foods (burgers, pizza, etc.).
I'd go back for another drink, but probably not for food.
Update 6.4.2012 Â - I tried to go back for food last night (a Monday night), but unfortunately I got there after their kitchen closed. So be warned, their kitchen closes at 10 PM.
Previous reviews are spot on. Â Went here early afternoon for drinks and food. Â Sat outside, it's just a nice relaxing enviorment overall.
Service was fast and friendly. Â Def. recommend this place if your in the area looking for a good bite to eat or a nice cold beer....to top it off in a chill enviorment...not like a normal "irish" pub
I've experienced McBride's at various times in the day and it is almost always busy. This isn't some neighborhood dive bar or uber fancy restaurant. It's just right in terms of drink/food selection, price and ambiance.
One of my favorite times at McBride's was on St. Patrick's day. I had a friend visiting PVD from upstate NY and we decided to pop in to the pub just for one Guiness. We ended up staying a few hours and then returning later in the evening. Live music, giveaways, and great people? What could be better!
The other times I've been to McBride's have been more low-key but equally fun. Whether it was drinks on the patio or competing in their pub trivia, the service was always spot on and attentive to our needs. The pub would be even better if it stayed open later, but I guess that's the trade off for being located in Wayland.
Wayland Square needed an Irish pub. Badly!
I'm just jealous I didn't have the idea/money/wits to build one :)
McBride's is the perfect place for the just out of college and up crowd, who are ready to grab a Guinness at 5pm. Â Their meal selections aren't too shabby, and the staff are super friendly. Â My favorite bartender there is Joe - who is always wearing a smile, and ready to serve you your favorite brew.
Parking's in the back - if you can find a spot. Â The best seats are at the bar ;)
If you want a new twist - grab an appetizer of the Irish Nachos.
I come here for the great environment... it's our local go to bar. Â The food unfortunately is not impressive and many items are over $10. Â The price wouldn't be an issue if the food was better and healthier.
But that said, I am a huge fan because it really meets a need in our neighborhood. Â The bartenders and waitstaff are really cool and you get the sense that the family has a vested interest in making it work.
I have been here 4 times for food and go for drinks here at least 3x per month.
I reviewed before with a poor experience but was willing to try again. This time there was no live music and I could hear my friend talk. Live music is fantastic AFTER dinner hour.
First of all, pants off to the amazing Reuben sandwich with REAL corned beef. Not that thinly sliced junk they serve at most places.
Halfway through our meal, the fire alarm went off. Someone yelled "Take your drinks!" so we all calmly grabbed our Guinnesses and headed to the patio. It was a mild night and everyone continued to chat while the firemen came and reset the alarm. Staff handled this so smoothly that no one seemed upset.
Everything on the menu looked insane. Guinness beef stew and many Irish classics were all there. I need to come back and try more!
For the most part I only have good things to say about McBride's. I've been there a handful of times and whether I order their burgers or pizzas they always turn out pretty tasty. Nothing exceptional, mind you, but always good and there's something to be said for consistency. Bonus points also given for the different ciders they offer. I have a hard enough finding places that have cider at all on their menu and this lovely pub has no less than three.
Besides the food and drink though, service is always welcoming and friendly and the place is clean. So why only 3 stars? I'm a little underwhelmed by its lack of identity, its lack of character. I'm sure that this will come in time (it has only been open less than a year after all) but until then I'll keep thinking of this place as the Irish pub verson of the girl next door.
Don't be deterred by the 3 stars - don't know them well enough to merit more...yet! I was ecstatic to see McBride's go up in Wayland Square; it's a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and will undoubtedly do well there. The bar is very cozy and well equipped with friendly and attentive bartenders. I only ducked in for a drink and did not get to sample the fare, but judging by what those around me ordered it looks pretty good. It looks as though they have outdoor seating in both the front and back when the weather permits, which is really nice.
I hope they do well there and that I get to come back again soon!
One perfectly sunny Friday afternoon I found myself thirsty in Wayland Square so we headed into McBride's for a pint. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the folks behind the bar letting us know we could take a seat anywhere we wanted. Â This may not seem like a big deal, but it's something I really appreciate. Â There's nothing worse than walking into a new restaurant/pub and having everyone stare at you while you awkwardly stand around trying to figure out if you should wait to be seated.
We opted for a seat outside on the patio, which is pretty spacious especially for the East Side, and ordered up a few beers. Â When the beers arrived at the table I was excited to see that they were being served in the correct glassware. Â Again, one of those small things that's makes me an incredibly happy girl.
When it was time for round two, we ordered a few apps as well. Â We decided on the beef sliders and the irish nachos. Â The sliders were good, not amazing, but still tasty. Â The irish nachos were interesting. Â They use their shepherd's pie filling as the topping, which is made with lamb, peas and corn and top that with lots of cheese and sour cream. Â That all sits on top of their house made chips, which were like deep fried triangle pillows. The first few bites were like a delicious kung-fu kick to my tastebuds, but after a few more bites I was all irish nachoed-out. A heavy, greasy dish it was. Â
For a pub with a prime location in Wayland Square the prices are more than reasonable, parking isn't an issue and the servers/bartenders were really friendly. McBride's does a lot of the little things right, I'll be back for sure!
McBride's feels like a great Irish pub but without the sticky floors and nasty smell of smoke -- due to the fact that the place is brand new.
They have great outdoor seating where you can people watch the Wayland square crowd, but you'll need to take advantage of that before it gets chilly!
I haven't eaten here, so I can only review the bar -- the bartenders are all friendly and keep the drinks flowing. And did I hear a real Irish accent from one of them? I'll have to go back again to confirm.
I've been to McBrides several times now and in my opinion its the perfect place to meet up for drinks with friends and co-workers.
The notable absence of hipsters is a welcome surprise as is the decent selection of beers. They have some nice bottled stuff available as well as some decent beers on tap in the event you aren't up for the token Irish bar Guinness.
I've always had burgers there and been happy with them although the service can be hit or miss and the last two times i was there the bartender seemed afraid to approach me. I'm not scary or mean but i am thirsty so come on over son.
The spotty service and strange hours are landing me at three stars. If I see the consistency in service, I'd happily move it up. Case in point, the last time we were there it was on a Thursday at closing time, which apparently is about 10:45. We didn't realize that and when we asked if we had time for another round they gave us one, then turned the house lights on and rushed us out. It would have been less awkward for me to hear "Sorry guys, we've got to close up" then to chug a beer while the waitstaff glares at us from across the room with all the lights on.
This is a tough one. I Â enjoyed my meal, but the service was a little shaky. Our orders were mixed up multiple times for both food and drinks. It did get to a point where we were all laughing about it so it wasn't all bad, and when the fire alarm went off and we had to vacate the building we were in sheer hysterics. We were compensated for our troubles and the waitress was very apologetic and nice, so it's hard to knock the service too bad. It was pretty screwy though. Something to work on.
As for the food, I ordered the Irish Mac. A large burger with three layers and a potato pancake, very hearty and flavorful. everything was good if not a little pricy, 9.9 for no frills nachos is a little extreme. I would definitely go back though, if not for the food than for the good bar and nice location.
McBride's, Providence's newest Irish Pub is not bad. I stopped by for an early dinner on a Sunday and it was almost empty. We sat outside on their cute little patio in the heart of Wayland Square.
Despite being one of the one tables occupied, the service was super slow! The food was pretty good, nothing to rave about, but not bad.
We went back for a early-evening Sunday dinner with friends. Â Our server was lovely and the seating outdoors was great, but I was less than impressed with the food and am embarrassed to have brought two out-of-towners here to eat - with what Providence has to offer!?!
The one word that knocked them down a star? Â Cold.
Yes, cold food.
We ordered two apps (muscle special and calamari) to share around the table. Â The door was still swinging shut from our waitress exiting after bringing our apps that two new servers appeared with our entrees. Â I had not even unrolled by napkin to place on my lap.
They were confused when we asked why our food was being served WITH our apps - and I suppose were nice enough to take it back to the kitchen... Â Baked fish, Shepard's Pie, veggie burger and blue burger. Â I watched in horror as my friend cracked through the crust of her cold mashed potatoes that accompanied her past-prime fish... Â She was gracious, covered both in pepper and salt and smiled as she washed it down with her beer.
The Shepard's Pie seemed to keep - but our burgers and fries... Â I understand keeping the burgers under the heat lamp. Â That makes sense. Â But fries? Â Had one of my +$1 sweat potato fry and couldn't touch another.
I feel like they've been open long enough that these hiccups should be worked out... Â So disappointed.
You want a pint at 3:30 in the afternoon? You want to sit outside in relative comfort and watch the world go by? You want bar food that won't give you bar-food-regret? AND you want decent service, to boot? Then go to Mcbride's, kid. It's all of the above, and very clean and lovely, too.
This pub actually feels like it's in England (I know it's supposed to be Irish, but it felt more English to me) - it's not stanky, skanky or overrun with hipsters - it's right at home in the lovely Wayland Square without being pretentious or ridiculously expensive. We got two pints of their fantastic draught IPA (can't remember the name, but it was wicked good) and an order of Buffalo chicken wings (they were perfectly cooked and not too heavy-laden with sauce) all for about $20. Not bad. We were a very happy duo, we were.
We sat out on the patio, which is an actual patio, so I was thrilled. See, it's pretty difficult to find a decent pub in Providence that has outdoor seating that ISN'T on the sidewalk - which I kind of hate because you feel so exposed and, well... dirty. This is a patio with maybe 10 or so tables spaced out nicely so you're not part of your neighbors convo unless you want to be.
The pub is gorgeous on the inside, too - long bar, proper brass accoutrements and quite spacious. I found our waitron to be lovely - very polite, friendly, happy and efficient. In fact, he recommended the beer to me, so I may have a bit of a crush on him. Since it's located directly behind a funeral home, they go with an Irish Wake theme - they reserve a moment every evening to say fare-thee-well to the departed - and the items on the menu have a tongue-in-cheek death theme, which actually works.
Go here for a step up from Trinity Brewhouse and for something not quite as fancy as La Laiterie - it's a typical English pub, really - we could have been in London... except maybe the people were friendlier :)
I visited McBride's on a Saturday evening with my two children (7 and 9). The place was fairly empty for a Saturday night at around 7pm in Wayland Square.
The menu is pricey which is to be expected given the other restaurants in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the quality of the food and service are nowhere near comparable to other Wayland Square restaurants.
Let's start with drinks. I ordered an Old Fashioned. It was eleven bucks, watered down and came in an oversized shot glass. After finishing the drink (which didn't take long given the size of the glass), I was never asked by our server if I'd like anything else--not even a water refill.
The food was very mediocre. I ate a turkey wrap which was fine. My daughter had nachos that were underwhelming (nothing special). My son ordered a burger (I asked for medium) - it was served raw and bloody. I very rarely send things back, but had to in this case. When the burger returned, it wasn't rare but it was still fairly undercooked. The fries were bland.
So, lackluster service, underwhelming food and very high prices for what you get earn this place 2 stars on my first visit. I hope things improve, but it will be an uphill climb.
