It's amazing what a difference a good bartender can make. Â We went into McDonough's for a quick beer while we waited for our haunted tour to start. Â Well, we got stood up by our tour, the tour guide never showed up, but we didn't actually mind because we were doing just fine drinking beer at the bar.
This place felt comfortable to me, I could see it becoming my local bar if I lived in Savannah. Â I didn't really see anything Irish about it, and I didn't eat, just drank beer. Â The bar stools were wobbly and uncomfortable. Â But for some reason I found that endearing instead of aggravating. Â I hear they have very lively karaoke as well. Â I would go back again. Â And again.
Decent Irish like pub in historic district of Savannah. Right across from my favorite gas station, Parkers. So I went to Mc Donough's on a Thursday night. It wasn't crowded and I sat at the bar. The service was good. My friend and I got some food and the bartender obliged at mixing a few of the beers for us.
Overall I liked the place. I'd like to come back on the weekend and see the scene and rate the establishment when it's really cranking, cause that's when it matters most.
A-OK. I'll be back for sure. Especially for the sweet potato fries!
Irish bar in Savannah w/ the best cheeseburger!!!!
So of curse seeing this in the south was blowing my mind, but I didn't know that Savannah had a huge Irish population... But you learn something new everyday.
It was an Irish pub w/ a country touches. Our waiter / bartender was a sweet southern lady who made sure the glasses were beer filled and the burgers were just right.
Nice, no fuss spot!
When we arrived the place was packed. The beer selection was pretty minimal and we weren't going to be sitting down anytime soon, so I just grabbed a Guinness and we ended up going elsewhere. Â Looks like it could be fun on a less busy day.
Not being one to subject others to the brutal experience of hearing me sing, I won't be here for the karaoke though.
3 stars for food
4-5 stars for good karaoke/ambiance
your traditional sports pub with karaoke on sundays - karaoke was fun and a good crowd.
so not impressed w/ the food at this place. Â you don't get much food on the sampler appetizer platter - super disappointing.
I got the crispy chicken salad which was decent enough.
my friend got the creamy pasta and it was basically soup - so nasty.
Come for the karaoke/drinks
Eat elsewhere!!
I was visiting Savannah, and this bar was not far from our hotel.
The bar has two sides--one side with karaoke and the other side with food. Â The food side almost looks like a Chilis or Applebees type setting. Â
I had a great time here. Â I met a lot of really awesome people. Â The majority of the crowd attend SCAD.
I was in town for a conference and at loose ends and needed a place to get a bite to eat. I was walking around the neighborhood of my hotel and just happened on this place.
It's a bar. Â Evidently it was voted to have the best karaoke (I didn't stick around for the karaoke) in Savannah. But, the Chef's Salad I got was pretty darn good and filling so I was pleased. Â The waitress as friendly and the service was quick and attentive.
I would definitely recommend it as the neighborhood watering hole and it's in the historic district near some nice hotels so if you don''t want to fight crowds or pay high prices, this is the place. Â
Decent beers on tap, too.
My husband and I stopped in McDonough's for after dinner drinks. Â The place was filled with a mix of locals and tourists, young and old. Â The patrons and bartenders were chatty and my pint glass was never empty. Â The man sitting next to me struck up a conversation like we were old pals. Â The place was smoky, but not too bad. Â We sat at the bar and away from the karaoke in the back room. Â I couldn't hear the singing or the songs used for karaoke...just the TVs in the bar. Â Yay! Â I can't vouch for the food, but the menu looked like general pub/bar fried fare. Â The beer was cold and reasonably priced...exactly what we were looking for at the time.
Review Source:5 stars because we found it at the perfect place and time, the service was great, and the food was perfect!
I have to add too that smokers are welcome as there is an indoor room for smoking completely separate from the regular non-smoking.
We couldn't have found McDonough's Restaurant & Lounge at a better time! Â I had seen it advertised while visiting Savannah and hoped to find it as I'm partial to Irish Pubs since my Dad had owned one when he was here on earth with us. Â We had been walking and walking, oh at least 5 miles, when I looked up and "Helloooo!" Â there she is just calling us to come in, cool off with a nice cold one, and have some lunch! Â It was sweltering outside that day, Friday June 11th.
I was finishing a smoke outside the front door, and when my hubby opened the door to peek in we were welcomed with, "Hey! Â Come on in out of the heat! Â We allow smokers in here!" Â How great is that when normally we are considered the Black Sheep everywhere else!
These guys have Harp, my favorite beer which seems to be hard to find at most restaurants, crisp and deliciously freezing cold! Â Same with hubby's Mic Ultra. Â We started with a bowl of seafood dip, I believe with crab, lobster, and cheese, Â and warm tortilla chips for dipping very good with the bowl consisting of at least 2 cups full! Â Couldn't finish. Â I had what I would normally have at any Irish Pub, the Reuben but I chose to have it with turkey to lower the cals. Â Perfect sized sandwich! Â On the side sweet potato fries which were not seasoned and much better that way!
I have to say perfect timing, perfect place! Â I thank you McDonough's, so much, for just being you and very hospitable when we were about to faint out front from the heat!!
Okay, let me say up front that if you want to go here to eat bar food and drink, you are ganna be a bit pissed over the small portions of food at high prices. But, if you just want to go here and drink relatively cheap ($4-$6 a drink for liquor), you'll have a good time.
The few tables outside are for drinking and chatting and watching the parade of crazies going in and out of Parkers while listening to coffee house radio.
The inside is split into two sides; one is a classic bar full of old dark wooden charm, the other half is a karaoke bar filled with college students.
I personally like to sit outside with a friend and our dogs and spend the evening waving to people we know, talking to people we don't, and drinking pretty strong drinks. I have even been known to walk to Parkers for a snack.
But, on rainy nights, desperate for food, I have gone inside and ordered bar food. Don't get me wrong, it isn't the worst food (although the best bar food I've had was down on river street) but it never fails to come in tiny portions.
Although I do love to hang out and drink outside, I give this bar 3 stars because of the food and because if there wasn't a table outside, I might go find somewhere else.
This was my bar through college, and I eventually worked there as a karaoke DJ. Â If you're a fan of karaoke, this is the place in Savannah. Â Seven days a week of karaoke from 9pm until close. Â Unfortunately, the last time I visited, the crowd there seems to have died down a little. Â Although it's still the number one spot to be after the St. Patrick's Day parade (this is where all the bagpipe bands end up).
The food is great, the waitresses are friendly (and gorgeous!), and although Mike the bartender might seem like an intimidating guy, he is one of the most interesting people I've ever met.
The downside: during game season, there's a battle around 9pm between people watching the college football game and regulars who want to sing some karaoke. Â The singing can start as late as 10:45 on those nights.
I think I had fun. Though I'm not really sure because both times I went to this bar I got so drunk I barely remember anything. I DO remember rangers dedicating songs to me. There seemed to be a couple almost-fights. It was a little bit grimey, but all hole in the wall places should be. The karaoke was fun, but I'm wondering if anyone else gets sick of all the country-music singing rangers, or if that's just me. All in all it was a fun time, and I'm glad that I spent time in a place that felt like it was a real Savannah bar.
