Came here for dinner when Humpy's was overcrowded. The decor and design are nice and the booths are big. We had a very nice waitress. I think this is the only place in Anchorage where you can get a Shandy (beer with lemon-lime soda)- very refreshing on a hot day. The food was ok. Enjoyed the Molten Blu Chips appetizer- potato chips with bacon and bleu cheese. Overall a good experience. It was not crowded so we could have a conversation!
Review Source:The waffle fries are amazing and it's a great place to hang out with friends. Â Not too loud or crowded so you can have conversations. Â There's great bluegrass on Wednesday nights too! Â I've had some really great service here but when its' not really great, it's terrible. Â Sometimes it's really hard to get anyone's attention to get your check or another beer. Â A few times I've thought "geez, I'd have had another if anyone would have asked." Â Instead I sat with an empty glass until it was time to leave. Â Plus, I am a little conflicted since the mayor (I am not a fan) is a part owner of this place. :-
Review Source:Went here on a Monday night for an open mic comedy show. The comedians were not funny at all. I went up to the bar to order some food and the waiter/bar tender girl was eating in front of customers with a huge mouth full of food so she couldn't even talk. If you ever watch that show resturant stake out or bar rescue, they rip into people that do that. The food was pretty good, we tried the philly chesse steak sub and shrimp/chips. I asked for a box and never got one after 30 minutes. My bill was around $70 by the end of the night and if the service would have been good, the waiter could have got a 20% tip, but instead she got nothing.
Review Source:Food was decent. Wasn't super hungry so got a bowl of chili and a dinner salad. Both were good but not four star. Server was OK. Not super friendly but probably tired. I do think the vibe seemed like it had a potential to be a cool hang out for beer and decent pub food. It was close to the hotel I was at so that's why I went there but maybe as a local it would be a cool hangout. I've had some really good food here in Anchorage this week so the bar was set pretty high.
Review Source:Stopped into McGinley's during a business trip in Anchorage, which is not unusual given that I always seek out Irish Pubs when travelling, what gave this place an extra plus was the Irish music session going on the evening that I arrived. I cme back the next day too and the atmosphere was still very friendly.
Review Source:I liked the environment of the nice pub on the corner and the bathrooms were exceptionally clean (not to mention it smelled like a hot man, seriously). But every other aspect that this place has as a restaruant on a Sunday afternoon is not good. The girl that waited our table was slow with everything, the coconut shrimp had a burnt taste to them, and the southwest rolls looked IDENTICAL to the ones they serve at Applebees. Quite frankly, I would rather go there to get them. I wouldnt really go back here unless it was on a weekend and when stuff was going on because this place doesnt have much going for them otherwise. Parking is a hassle as well.
Review Source:Super expensive and the food is not very good. The service is quite spotty as well--sometimes they'll ignore you for while even when the place is relatively quiet, and some of their servers seem to have a bit of an attitude.
The only reason I give it two stars is that it's a decent place to watch a game if it's not too busy. There's really only one big TV though so you can't have any competition as far as what you want to watch.
I aint got no gripes about McGinley's. What the hell are people expecting when they walk in here? Finnegan's flippin Wake? James Joyce's ghost? Â Every waitress speaking in brogue? It's just a bar for gods sake that I am happy to visit and have a snakebite. I'm not looking for Michelin star food either...
Review Source:I'm not a fan of this place. Two stars is a gift They do have a decent beer selection and most of the servers are friendly enough but it can be a bit of a wait at times even when they aren't busy. The food is kind of blah and uninspiring and DO NOT order the green nachos! You will regret it the next day.
Review Source:I judge an Irish Pubs by how well they pour a Black & Tan and their B&T was a big disappointment - just poured together, mixed up, and not layered with the Harp on the bottom and the Guinness on top. As everyone says, the Pub Battered Halibut were over cooked but the waffle fries were excellent. So, we rate their food service at just 1 star. However, we have to tell you that it was a sunny Friday evening and the 4th and 5th street bars were crowed and there were long waits for a table. McGinley's had several tables open and quick service. We liked the layout and atmosphere and will come back for a Guinness and to hear the band. For that, we award them two bonus stars.
Review Source:We were looking for some fish' n chips and Humpy's was packed. Â The half and half I ordered (Harps and McGinness) came all mixed up and dark. Â Was the bartender really that new? Â The halibut was over fried BUT the waffle fries were fantastic! It was early in the evening and lots of space was available. Â I would try this place one more time -maybe in deep winter without the tourists.
Review Source:First, about the whole age thing -- http://www.dps.state.ak.… has information about underage persons. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I think it says that an underage person can accompany a guardian or spouse only for dinner. Maybe McGinley's is trying to interpret the law and enforce it accordingly, but it doesn't say anything about 9pm. Doesn't excuse their supposed nasty attitudes, though! And, if it IS the law that they are enforcing, why not just tell patrons? I have my TAM card, and I've had to politely explain to people why I can't do certain things. All it takes it a little explanation!
Anyway, I'm generously giving McGinley's 2 stars, because of some of the staff there I've encountered are really nice. But for the most part, I can't say a whole lot of nice things. The food's alright, albeit overpriced for some items. It is extremely difficult to get a proper black-and-tan. I'm not impressed with their drinks, or some of their selection. My significant other refuses to go there anymore, as the three times he had gone, he did not appreciate the service. Needless to say, it's a place we both won't voluntarily go to.
The place is clean, which is nice, and they have live music, but sometimes the volume really needs to go down. I hated going there, and feeling like I was in Chilkoot's because of how incredibly loud it can get.
Kinda disappointed. I wanted to like it ever since it first opened, but I'm hard pressed to find something to enjoy. It's definitely a place I don't crave or want to say to my friends, "Hey, yeah! Let's go to Ginley's!" Meh. Just "meh."
Will never go back to this dump. Food is overpriced, cliche, and tasteless, and the beer selection abysmal. And to top it off they kicked out my son, turning 21 in a couple weeks but never tries to drink alcohol..while he was with his father! Other families with little kids were ok, however. I guess they have selective age discrimination.
So to review..overpriced, tasteless food and rude service...don't waste your time or money, Those other good reviews must be from the owners.
Typical Irish Pub fare and drinks. The serve pitchers, for about $18 and their food is decently priced. I ordered the Beef Stew, which had barely in it and large chunks of beef. Very hearty and great tasting.
My friends ordered the fried fish, which was nothing special and the batter they used made the fish not as moist. My other friend ordered the chili and a cup of the chicken dumpling soup. Chili was bland, kind of sweet and most of the ingredients looked like they came out of a can. The chicken soup however was very good and wasn't too thick or salty.
Overall, I would recommend this place for anyone looking for a laid back dinning experience and a great selection of beer and cocktails.
I went here to have dinner with my mom. It was 8:55 pm, and we we're both carded, since I'm not 21 yet I expect to get some guff, but the bouncer looks at me and almost yells "YOU HAVE 5 MINUTES"!
My mom explained to him that she is my mom (legal guardian) and we just want dinner. Apparently no one under 21 is allowed after 9, even if you just want dinner AND your legal guardian is with you. SO if you are under 21 and wanted to be treated like crap, go here.
I wanted to like this place a lot. Local musicians can play here, the decor is different, and its a pub! But, when I came here one night with a group of friends I was pretty dissatisfied.
We went in around 8 to get a quick bite to eat. At the time I was too young to drink, so when the waitress checked IDs she let me know I had to leave before 9. Okay, that's fine.
We ordered our food. It took a little while and when all was brought out, they had forgotten an order of fries. By this time it was 8:30 and the waitress came up and told me I had half an hour. Mind you, there were families here with toddlers and children.
We ate and were having a good time. By the time we were finished and asked for the check it was around 8:50. We waited for a good fifteen minutes until the waitress angrily told me I should have left five minutes ago. Lady friend, I will leave as soon as I pay. But you not bringing the check is kinda screwing this up!
She quickly gave us the check, charged us for the never seen fries and asked me to leave.
I would've probably given this place a 3. I like that they have corned beef and cabbage, as well as a host of other dishes. But the service just blew so much that I won't be returning.
Blech. Â The food was absurdly bad, the service was absurdly absent-minded (on a slow afternoon, no less), and the best draft beers weren't even mentioned on the menu. Â (I guess this is what we should expect from politicians who need business write-offs slash election night hang-outs.) Â The pub tries to draw live music events and does have several TVs showing sport-stuff, but it doesn't go out of it's way on the "Irish"... which is how we ended up spending our lunch eating crappy food and listening to Hall & Oates. Â Good thing we're funny.
Review Source:This is a relaxed place with simply great food! Â The menu is extensive, so there's something for everyone. Â I had the King's steak salad and the clam chowder and it really hit the spot. Â The steak was tasty and generous in portion and the salad was super fresh. Â The chowder was also out of this world! Â Thick, creamy, and delicious! Â Perfect.
This is a VERY Irish restaurant and bar with lots of fun memorabilia and lots of flair. Â The service was super fantastic and I was impressed by the one server that was very efficiently serving the whole lunch crowd! Â Two thumbs up!
Check it out and I've heard that the corned beef sandwich is the winner at this place.
The best thing about this place is the atmosphere! Straight up Ireland! It didn't feel cliche or anything like that , just a normal Irish pub in the middle of Anchorage. The bartenders were fairly nice and very attentive. It's always packed here and getting seating is really hard, even at the bar. The appetizers were pretty good, however I saw some other guys corn beef and would have definitely gotten that instead of the potato skins, it looked Delicious. I think that this place is good for a thirsty Thursday night, its just way too packed on weekends.
Review Source:My friends and I were walking around town and ended up at McGinley's mostly because Bernies was charging a cover (I still don't understand that).
I was disappointed that they didn't have a live band because the music there is usually really good, but it is the 4th of July weekend so I assumed people were out of town.
The service was just okay. Our waitress wasn't particularly friendly or accommodating, but she got our food and drinks to us within a reasonable amount of time.
I ordered the Strawberry Chicken Salad, which was delicious. It had large pieces of fresh strawberries and small pieces of savory chicken. Usually I don't use all the dressing that comes with salad because it is too thick and rich, but the strawberry vinaigrette was light and tangy. Perfect to pour onto the salad.
I also tried the snakebite which is half Harp half cider and was surprised at how good it was. Â I can't drink the cider by itself because it is way too sweet, but mixed with Harp was a good blend.
The food is hit or miss. Â Can be very good at times and others it was bad. Â Great bar late at night. Â The drinks are good as well. Â Only Irish Pub in Anchorage, so there is not competition. Â It will do for Anchorage Irish food. Â But if you are expecting east coast Irish Food, you will not find it in the Last Frontier.
Review Source:I get that many people really like this place. A lot. Unfortunately, EVERY time there is an issue, and it's related to the service. Visit #1 was a pleasant experience until we got around to waiting for the bill. And waiting. And waiting. There was one other table in there at the time.
Visit #2 was more of the same.
Visit #3 was more of the same, except all of us (3 people) were shorted a dollar or so on our change. We called her on it.
Visit #4 I nearly had to be restrained. Our server was clearly overstretched for the lunch rush. My salad arrived without the main ingredient (chicken!), my friend never got the mustard she requested, and when we asked for separate checks you would have thought we were the worst table ever, from our server's reaction. It took forever to get our check, then was an ordeal to figure out who owed what while she separately ran people's cards for portions of it. I think she wound up with a much larger tip than we wanted to give her, simply by ignoring us until we gave up and threw cash on the table.
The food is good, but don't go there if you have to be back at work by a certain time, or if poor service really irritates you. I'm going to spend my precious time and $ elsewhere, thanks. Too bad, because the food really is good.
I have eaten here many times and never had a bad meal. Â The atmosphere is good, the servers are friendly and responsive, and the food is all around good.
There are some things that are so-so. Â The servers are honest about that. Â When you're in Anchorage, you expect a certain quality of seafood. Â They have always steered me away from stuff that is frozen and average.
Now, there are also things that are great. Â I grew up Irish in Chicago, so I have certain expectations about my corned beef and cabbage. Â This is, by far, the best corned beef I have ever had at a restaurant. Â It comes out looking like a NY Strip Steak. Â It's juicy as can be. Â The potato pancakes served with it are fantastic!! Â Definitely a must try,=.
Alright. I walked in here so wanting to hate this place. Most Irish pubs only exist for drunks and people with at least half a percent of Irish in them, to go and hang out with friends and talk about their 'Ole Uncle Patty and the time he went commando under his kilt. (By the way, kilts are Scottish, not Irish.) But I couldn't. I really, really liked this place. We ordered their nachos and corned beef and potato pancakes. Yummy!!!! Lots of other tempting items on the menu. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere is great for a casual nigh out with friends, or enemies, or coworkers that look better when fed well and properly "watered."
Tourist - Go here and skip "HUMPY'S" . Much, much cleaner. Did I just say that outloud?
My husband is very proud of his Irish roots, so after we moved here we went here several times for dinner and drinks. The menu is great - lots of comforting, tasty options along with traditional Irish food. There's a comfortable ambiance, making it a good place for dinner as well as going out for cocktails after work. Although parking in the area is scarce, it's definitely a place we'll be frequenting in the future.
Review Source:I was craving a Ploughman's Platter and was bummed to see they only serve it, along with other appetizers, after 2 pm. Â Someone needs to explain to Dan Sullivan that the platter is a traditional lunch in the British isles served with lettuce, a roll and pickled onions. I had the Reuben sandwich and thought the corned beef I had was dry as was the marbled rye bread. I wished I had more thousand island dressing. I got potato chips and was surprised that they came in a bag - not homemade. Next time I will try the waffle fries, which they say are homemade. I agree with the other reviewer - as a true "nondrinker" I still felt quite comfortable there. Really liked the old Clash CD the bartender was playing too. I would go back and try it again based on the other reviews. It has a great ambiance.
Review Source:The only reason this place didn't get a 5th star is because the table was gross when we sat down.
I hesitate to say their corned beef is better than MINE, but it's definitely one of the best plates of cb and cabbage I've ever had. It came with two potato pancakes (which were quite tasty), a sweet/vinegary dipping sauce for them, and a cup of whole seed mustard for the corned beef.
On first bite, the onion rings invoked a slight "eew" response in my mouth because they aren't crunchy, they're kind of doughy. After a few of them though, they become a bit addicting. I almost wish we would have gotten some ranch for them though.
The place is obviously a pub, but it didn't scream "ALCOHOLICS COME HERE". It was a very comfortable place to have dinner, it's quite classy, and I only wish they allowed children after 8pm so we could have stayed for the music (which is every Thursday night starting at 8pm).
Last weekend my wife and I stopped by McGinley's for a pint and something to eat after a long day of picture taking downtown. Â I have heard good things about the food here and was not disappointed. Â I had the chili, she had the stuffed potato. The menu was filled with authentic English dishes and of course your trusty American stands-bys - such as hot wings. Â They have a very good selection of beer, ale, stouts, whiskey and scotch. Â The owners did a good job reproducing an authentic English Pub in appearance and flavor. Â I'll be back.
