I come here frequently and I really enjoy the place. Perhaps it's not a 5 star joint, but I can't bring myself to give it 4 stars and silly Yelp doesn't believe in half stars, so 5 stars it is.
Location is very convenient. Parking is decent around the area. No cover, no gimmicks, no waiting in line. No attitude bar tenders who are pretty quick on their feet. Â Ping Pong table before 8-ish for those that want to have a bit of different fun. Arguably one of the best Happy Hours in town that keeps going until 8pm, which is great!
I've only happened to be here during Karaoke night twice, but both times the people that are singing have been pretty amazing, so I have the feeling that it's either used by people honing their auditioning techniques or something along those lines ;).
When the DJ is blasting the music though it does get really LOUD. If you're closer to the speakers screaming matches are definitely needed if you have any hopes of your friend hearing you or you hearing them. Even then it's not really guaranteed ;).
I'll definitely be back!!
Surprised I lived in West LA for over 5 years and yet never been to this bar. Â Beer is well-priced and they have a good selection of draft and bottled suds. Â There's a good amount of space for seating and they have a pool table in the back room. Â they even broke out the ping pong table (tuesday evening). Â Each night looks like it has a differently themed event, so each visit is a different one. Â They advertise that they never charge cover, so that means more money for drinks! Â Bar is populated with mid-20s to 30s friendly west angelinos. Â Parking is plentiful on the streets.
Review Source:The atmosphere is comfortable, the crowds are friendly. The drinks are cheap and cold. Â Best of all, the staff is welcoming and friendly as soon as you walk in the door. Â A great place to both go all-out on the weekend, or stop by for a few after work.
Fantastic happy hour, and the karaoke is *actually* enjoyable. Â Ask Nick the bartender to sing you a song, you won't be disappointed.
Me and my friends used to come here often for its casual/fun ambiance. Recently, we came here on a quiet Friday evening with barely a line at the door. My hubby who was dressed in shorts was told that he would not get in due to his attire (keep in mind that it was a hot summer night). Since when did they change their image and start being selective? I thought this bar was about good ol' fun, good people, and cheap drinks. We left without a fight because there are plenty of bars in the Westside that can offer more. I would not suggest this bar if you are looking for a hassle-free, good night out.
Review Source:Dark hideaway in the middle of Santa Monica strip-mall territory. Very spacious and very laid-back and as mentioned, very dark. I guess that's why they checked my id when I am clearly WAY BEYOND 21 years of age, but I digress.
This place is super cool. My friend took me here one day after work because I like divey bars and this place between the hours of 4 - 6p is definitely lovely and divey. She warned me though, that later at night, it becomes a hipster joint with lines sometimes out the door. So after one drink, we high-tailed it outta there to make room for the young and restless. We had seedier places to suss out.
Otherwise, a good joint where they don't water down their drinks. Thumbs up for sure! Oh, and the ladies bathroom is very clean; also a sign of a classy establishment.
I came here to meet up some friends that l have not seen in a while and I really like this bar. When we got here there was a line and it did take rather long to get in but it was worth the wait for me and the rest of the group.
The dance floor (which is pretty small) was right by the entrance and was crammed with people dancing. After managing to pass the dance floor there was more people everywhere. Normally I avoid overly crowded bars. Luckily we got a table to chill. This bar played a lot of old hip hop (I mean old as in 2002-2006 hip hop) and the crowd, including myself, was going crazy.
We had two waitresses and they were both fast and really friendly even though they really had to go through a bunch of people to get to our table. I had the Moms Manhattan and I really enjoyed it. Everyone here was friendly even after the fact that it was a mission to even walk 10 feet away from where you were standing.
I really have nothing to complain about this place.
Came here for the first time and read the previous reviews about cheap drinks.
I don't really take mixed drinks so here it is...
1. balvenie - generous pour? 9 bucks? yes please
2. oban - generous pour? 9 bucks? yes please
3. old fashion - not many make it the way it should be these days and these guys come close.
4. other drinks - roughly 6 bucks
this is a steal and the environment was great along with the service. It took a little time for the few bartenders working to get around but they make up for it with well made drinks and generosity.
5 STARS- cheap. generous. fun.
Great little dive bar. Â Drinks are reasonably priced and the waitresses are super friendly and quick. No cover which is nice however it does get packed so if you arrive too late you may need to wait in line until they allow more to enter (after others leave or are kicked out). Â
They do have a dance floor area and it is rather small though. Can't really do much dancing when you are packed in like sardines. Â A great place to just hang out and relax but it can be loud.
The DJ last night was pretty good playing a great mix of the new and the old hip hop to top 100s.
I would recommend this place. Â No food though. Â Good street parking.
I'm not really into dive bars, but if that's where someone was feeling and needed a recommendation, I would suggest Mom's. Â Drinks are cheap, music is pretty good, there is a small dance floor, and the crowd is eclectic and pretty friendly. Â It usually seems to be quite busy without being scarily crowded, which is nice. Â There is some interesting art on the walls, it's fun. Â Bartenders get really busy later in the night but they do try their best and are reasonably friendly given how busy they are.
The one thing I do not like is the bathroom situation - only one bathroom (no stalls, just one locking room) for the ladies - there is also one unisex bathroom but I definitely do not prefer that, and especially not at a bar! Â So be prepared to stand in line to pee later in the night!
This is a bar for douchebags. Run by douchebags, patronized by douches. Notice the ridiculously long line outside? Not worth it AT ALL. I tipped the doorman $20 to skip the long line but the place was such a waste of my time and money. Terrible music, sticky floors and tiny restrooms with lines just as long as outside. The guys who come here are your typical insecure frat dudes fresh out of college and low class idiots who barely made it out of highschool, if that. The women aren't much better. A real classy joint for real classy people. Your mom would be proud.
Review Source:The drinks are too cheap and too strong for your own good.
Which means this place is AWESOME.
The atmosphere is really fun - a younger crowd - and like everyone said, it has a dark, vintage feel. There was a little bit of a line outside at 11pm-ish on a Friday night, but my friend and I were only waiting for 10 minutes or so.
Also, the people who work here are really nice. My friend misplaced her bag at the end of the night, and one of the security guys and one of the bartenders went out of their way to help us and to go around looking for it.
Highly likely that we'll be back. :)
Firstly, what an awesome name for a bar. Secondly, what a fun place to be on a Sunday evening.
The bar is squished amongst other buildings off of Bundy and Santa Monica and has a vintage atmosphere: Dark woods, vinyl seating & pool tables.
I requested a Dark 'n Stormy (my go-to cocktail) and was sadly notified that they no longer had ginger beer and could substitute with ginger ale. I was not a happy camper until a fellow barkeep overheard and mentioned they have a 100 proof ginger cordial they could add instead! Being the alcoholic that I am (JK), i agreed for the substitute to try it out! Needless to say, the drink was amazing (and strong). My friend and I were hammered after 3 of them. Drinks were relatively inexpensive as well!
I'll definitely be coming back to try more of the bartenders' concoctions!
A good ole standard dive bar that knows itself well.
Ironically and appropriately they turned me away when I darkened their doorstep with a 3 month strapped to my chest. They don't have a kitchen you see. I was, of course, initially disappointed but quickly appreciated their judgment as it kept me in the running for "mediocre parent of the year."
I've since visited "Mom's" several times sans offspring and found it to be simple, very dark, friendly, and cheap (by Los Angeles standards).
Be warned. This place does get crowded on normal bar nights. I'm guessing because it's cheap and not because you almost need night vision goggles to see in there. Though I can see (pun intended) the upside of the later if your a little homely and in need of companionship. I digress...
Good Value.
Love this place. Bartenders are great, happy hour prices are crazy good, regular prices aren't bad either. Street parking is readily available. No cover, no dress code, good DJ. They're good about playing big Laker games when they're on. Just don't get there too late. I usually get there between 7-8 and when I leave around 12, there's a huge line waiting outside. Crazy fun place to be.
Review Source:Great Happy Hour prices - Friendly bartenders - Lots of nice, displaced
and refugee locals disheartened, disenchanted and disgusted  by other
Happy Hour spots. Â The potato chips are yummy too. Have only been there for Happy Hour - and would NEVER stand in line to get in anywhere, so I cannot comment on the late night scene. Â
But we're liking it!!!
just got back from this place. still a lil buzzed, BUT i'm not drunk drafting. this is a legitimate review.
this place is great;
(1) no cover
(2) no dress code
(3) pretty good beats (except the DJ tonight did repeat a song, no biggie)
(4) enough space for people to hang out if they don't feel like dancing
(5) $3 pbr haha if you're cheap like me
when i lived in culver city, i went to Rush here and there. they people were there were a lot more chill though! check both of these places out!
Large Dive Bar with decent prices for drink and no cover! There didn't seem like there was any dress code since guys were coming in Hawaiian shortsas my friends were pointing out. BTW, NO FOOD at Mom's bar.
Happy Hour is from 4-8pm, $1 off drinks (except PBR).
MONDAY- STAND-UP COMEDY @ 8PM
WEDNESDAY - KARAOKE @ 8PM
THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY - DJ'S @ 9PM (Dancing)
Dark bar with friendly bartenders. The waitress gave us a free small bowl of chips when we sat down. The drinks were inexpensive, especially for the westside.
Mom's really a local bar with easy street parking. There's a large pool table in the back and three bathroom available (men, women, and mix). Plenty of seating in this place; bar, middle island, and by the wall.
If you have a large party, call ahead for reservation. I saw a couple of reserve sign on a Wednesday night.
p.s. Karaoke's old school style in front of everyone. They fade you out your songs when it gets busy and there's no private rooms here!
Thanks Mom's for partaking Yelp's on Tap 13', Racer 5: $4 -- Golden Road Hefeweizen (16 oz.): $4 --Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA Â (12 oz.): $4, good deal!
I was stoked to be a part of "Yelps On Tap" kick off night at Mom's Bar on Monday  where the beers were going for $4.00! This bar has a chill vibe inside where you can sit and sip on a lil cockytail or gulp down a nice cold beer.  The friends and I missed  out on the comedy portion where it was overflowing with people.  No worries cause we were entertained by  some intense ping pong playing which was conveniently located right by the bar:). If you are hungry eat before you come.  This establishment only provides chips but they let you order in!
Review Source:Its a small little dive bar but with one pool table and a back room area. I was here randomly on a Wednesday night and it was Karaoke night.
Not much to say but I like the set up, there was a good crowd and $5 on tap Blue Moon is pretty freaking awesome. A good place to meet up with some people and chill out.
- divey and comfy
- no cover, but gets crowded and line outside can get long
- divey cocktails and standard beer and well selection
- relatively cheap drinks
- fun, top 40s that gets half the crowded dancing
- bartenders are a hit or miss
- pool table, arcade games, photobooth
- food truck outside for the drunk and hungry
- ridiculous restroom line, even for the mens'
If you're from a big party college, grew up in the Midwest, or just love to RAGE, this is easily the best spot in LA for that!
NUTS.
We came here on a Saturday night around 11:30. The line outside was crazy long! It was the typical, 1 in, 1 out. So we waited in line for about 30 minutes.
Midnight:
BOOM. This place was humping! People dancing every where. There was a DJ spinning tunes. AND....
Wait for it....wait for it....
$3 dollar beers $5 shots!!!!
CHEAPEST drinks in the greater Los Angeles area.
Steve the bartender was amazing. He was so fast and effective.
This bar was crawling with UCLA guys and gals who were just ready to GET DOWN.
BUMPIN' and GRINDIN' all night long!
I love the party atmosphere of this bar and cannot wait to go back.
PROS: CHEAP DRINKS
-FUN VIBE
-DJ
-CHEAP DRINKS
-PACKED HOUSE
CONS: Line
GO RAGE,
Sean
I use to go to this place when it was Dell's Saloon. Â What a change Mom's is! It's not the dive bar that Dells was, they have done a full make over. Easy place to grab a drink with friends sans a snobby door.
The drinks are cheap and when I have been there on the weekends they have a DJ that plays really fun music, a mix of current stuff with the catchy stuff from the 80's and 90's
It's a small dive bar on Santa Monica Blvd, but it's always packed with the mid-20's to early 30's crowd. I ran into a guy I knew from college here.
The pours are decent, prices equally so. I think there is a pool table in the back. Single restroom stall, so there's generally a wait. The music is house.
It's a good standby. Most of my default nights end here.
My friend in business school came here for a night out with classmates, and said it was a pretty cool place.I used to trust her judgement, but all the years of schooling and very little bar hopping has seriously skewed her idea of a good time.
We wanted something to do that night since we had the next day off for a holiday, and since it was walking distance, and I was told it was worth it, we checked it out.
The bouncers were extremely chill. We got in without any problems, and when we walked in there was a pretty nice size crowd. However, nothing was really going on action-wise. The music was horrible pretty much everything produced by Will.i.am after Fergie joined the Black Eyed Peas, which is no good. We went to order drinks, and the first bartender we had was awesome. My margarita was top notch, and we went to find a place to sit. Second round...I don't know who let that girl mix, but she needed to back away from the tequila big time.
We ended up finding some fun people who we chatted with, and eventually spent the rest of the night hang out with them, but I'm not positive I'm coming back anytime soon.
Overall, if the music selection improved, i think the crowd would get a bit more into enjoying themselves, instead of getting plastered to make the night fun. Then again, the way they mix their drinks it's kinda hard not to, if you like that sort of thing.
Not too far from my sweetheart's apartment, we decided to hit this up for her birthday. We were a bit perturbed at having to wait in line to get in, but I guess when you're outside of your neighborhood and don't know anyone, this is what people go through. Â I should really get away from the beach more often (no I shouldn't...)
Once we got in and met up with some friends, I bellied up to the bar to order our drinks. Â I have to say, the bartenders were great, and the prices for top shelf were some of the best I've seen around town. Thanks Mom, you're a peach.
Drinks are inexpensive, music (on Saturday nights) are a blast from the past especially since the DJ spins mostly 90s hiphop and RnB, and the crowd isn't too bad.
Only gripe I have, one time I walked in with a Miami Heat jersey on, seeing other patrons with caps/hats, had an interesting conversation with Bulls fans, but nothing to call the cops on. A week later, rolled in with a Dodger jersey and hat, was told that they don't allow "sports gear" even though just the week prior I strolled in with the Heat jersey on.
So, there's a "dress code", but only when they feel like enforcing it. *shrug
Otherwise, always good times with the people I come here with, shake our tail feathers, and decently priced drinks.
My brother-in-law celebrated his birthday here last night. It was my first time at Mom's and I really liked it. The staff was super accommodating. They reserved the back room and table for our party and offered a free round of shots. Drinks were fairly affordable too. My friend's jack and coke was only $6 (whaaaaa? so good!) and I ordered 9 cherry bombs for $76 or something.
No cover. Cheap drinks. Good crowd. (Speaking of crowd, a line formed outside as the night progressed.) Super nice and friendly staff. Nice and friendly bartenders. Good music. There's a photobooth in the back. They allow you to bring your birthday cupcakes and eat them inside. I have nothing bad to say except perhaps comment on how long you might have to wait for the bathroom when the bar gets crowded.
I love the laid back feel. Dance, chat, drink. We had a very good time. Thank you, Mom's!
Love at first dance! This place is SO rad. Especially for being west of the 405. My friend had a birthday party there on a Saturday and they let her bring in snacks, a cake, and centerpieces. The bartender was AWESOME and never let anyone get thirsty.
DJ on the weekends played great dance music and by 11, everyone was getting down.
When we closed out at the end of the night, we noticed every single drink was between $4-$7... and these were REAL drinks. If only ever bar in LA could be like this. Drunky for under $20? Yeaaah bro.
Only downfall were the losers who got food from the philly food truck out front and threw their trash in the street then tried to flight me when I picked it up in front of them. WHO still does that?!
Sat. Night review. I really enjoyed my time here. Congrats to the owner of Backstage on another good place.
The Place:
Its a bigger, more modern version of Backstage. You've got you're classic long bar with stools for your seating pleasure on the right and across you've got a row of small round tables with seats as well.
They have a dance floor and Dj set up to the left of the entrance, and the DJ was good.
Open 365 days a year and no cover charge.
Drinks:
Now this and the Dj are what won me over. Cheap drinks! Â We got 2 cranberry/vodka cocktails for $10.00 ($5 ea.), now for those of you that don't know in most places in LA $10 = 1 drink at most places. Well actually at most places a Cran/ vodka cocktail is usually $12, Needless to say I'm a fan.
Happy Hour 4-7, Seven days a week.
Parking:
If you're lucky, right in front. Otherwise across the street or on the side streets. Don't forget to read the signs though people.
Cons:
Ouch, this hurts but.... There was a long line to get in!! What! that's madness. I hate lines, especially cuz it's not a club. While in line we did see this turning people off this place, most (cuz I overheard) opted to go to Busby's down the street (They have a line too, if you get there later, but it does moves pretty fast)
Now I don't know if I would have waited in line (30 min. got there at 11:15) any other night, if we weren't meeting people there. We actually almost left but I was like," We're here, we're meeting people, lets have some patience.." lol
But really I don't know if I would have waited longer than that (unless meeting ppl or have patience.)
Tip:
If you don't want to wait in line, Â or that long, get there between 9-10:30 at the latest. Otherwise, expect a wait, or you can just leave if you don't want to wait and go to the next best thing.
Enjoy!
P.s. Don't drink and drive  :)
