This place has had it's ups and downs over the years (I've been going here for 13 years) and the most recent owners have done a good job! The food is consistent and you can't beat the location. Sit on the sidewalk and people-watch because everyone's strolling up and down beach drive.
Great selection of draft beers,
my favorite curry is the jalfreze (only appears on special now though :-(
second favorite curry is the house
appetizers are all yummy, especially the tapenade!
I've had friends rave about this place, but I have to admit I was skeptical about the mixture of British pub food and Indian fare. Also, being that I really like ethnic foods, I sometimes am not completely sold on others' interpretations of authenticity.
I am glad I tried it though. Â After a 30 minute wait on a Saturday night (not too bad), I ate at a table outside. Â The Chana Masala was just ok. I would probably skip it next time. Â However, everything else was amazing. I had the chicken malay curry with garlic naan. Â It was lick your fingers good. Â The basmati rice was also yummy. Â My friend was also pleased with her dish. Â I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Â The service was really good too. Â The dishes came out really quickly which made the wait so worth it. Â I highly recommend.
So my brother's girlfriend flew down from England to visit and we decided to take her to have food from her homeland.
Little did I know, a lot of the things english people ate revolved around curry! Lol. Apparently a lot of Indian people live near Leeds. Interesting to know. Anyways, foodwise, the sausage bangers are similar to what she eats back home, but I wouldn't be able to prove that true since i've never been. I tried it and it was good, just sausages in a flaky outside crust. I guess Americans call it pogs in a blanket, but flaky crust instead of pancakes. Haha
We also got fries and curry...as the name suggests, its just fries...and indian curry to dip. It was pretty tasty though.
I had fish and chips. Fish was crunchy and delish with a side of fries, tarter sauce and malt vinegar. The peas it came with were super dried out and not edible. I guess real English fish and chips are supose to include fresh soft mashed peas. Oh well. I didnt want peas anyway.
Boyfriend got the chicken tikki masala. It was yummy and came with french bread and naan to dip. Good amount, even had leftovers to take home.
The wait was about 20 minutes outside in the hot, humid Florida sun. The hostess was a little rude and snobby. The service was kind of slow but It was a fun experoence in the very English decorated establishment. All the English flags and whiskeys entertained us as we waited.
The Moon Under Water is a great place to go if you're not sure what you are craving to eat. From chicken curry to jalapeno poppers there is something to please every one. Â They have a great outside patio right across from the water and banyon trees, it is an awesome location. Â They also have a variety of beers and cocktails to choose from!
Review Source:We decided to try this place after we tried a sample of their food at the Seagrapes food and wine festival. We loved what they had there-it was one of our favorite stops.
It has a great location, next to the water-wonderful breeze. Our server was great.
The food was good as well, not as good as I was hoping for the prices but it was still good.
We had the Chana masala appetizer-it was ok, would not highly recommend it and it only comes with a couple small pieces of naan. Nothing to rave about at all, a little bland. (I normally really enjoy Chana masala.)
We decided to split the lamb shank "Moon under the water" style curry with 32 spices. The lamb was very good and it was a large piece(definitely enough for two). The sauce was good-not amazing-but good. We decided to get all the extras that you can add to the platters-naan, sauce platter and something else. Not worth the extra $ at all. If you order a platter, don't bother upgrading and adding all the sides they have listed at the bottom of the menu-just order a side of naan.
I got the chai tea-amazing-really really good. We also tried a coffee/alcohol drink with lots of whipped cream for dessert and it was awesome.
Overall...not bad, I have had much better Indian in Tampa so I was not hugely impressed but still a nice restaurant.
Went on weekend around 3:30pm. They told us the wait for a table for two (inside or out) was going to be 45 minutes. Form the other reviews, it looks like this is a standard response from the hostess girls? The good news was that it wound up taking about 30 minutes to get our table. Somewhat acceptable for the time and day. But for two people?
The olive hummus spread was really good. It came with tasty pita bread slices and lemon slices. Â But the perogies were just ok. They came with a small sausage button on top of the perogie. And it came with sour cream and some type of curry sauce. The curry sauce wasn't that good and didn't go well with the perogies at all.
I ordered the Mojo chicken and it was absolutely horrible. It tasted like they boiled a frozen chicken in tap water and then plopped it on the bun; then added lettuce and tomatoes. I didn't taste any mojo or seasoning at all. It was totally bland and tasteless.
Guinness Burger was nothing to write home about as well. Average burger meat with just a lot of stuff jammed under the bun. Like eating a bunch of mush and left you not wanting more.
Didn't go inside the restaurant but the ambience outside was decent - somewhat near a park and the water.
Overall a decent place but they really need to liven up their menu and make tastier food. Pricing was not high but not low either. Don't be fooled by the catchy / swanky name - this place is about average
My wife and I were very lucky that the show we were seeing at the Mahaffey got out in time for us to make it to Moon Under Water before their kitchen closed. Â It was that perfect time in the evening where it's late enough that parking is free and relatively plentiful, but enough of the stores were open that it didn't feel creepy walking around. Â
We arrived and were promptly seated outside, which unfortunately means I have no idea what the inside of this place looks like, but I'm sure the decor is great based on the exterior. Â Our waitress was extremely friendly and accommodating even though it looked like she was the only one handling everyone outside.
Since we had already drank a bit at the theater we skipped the drinks and went right to the food menu, which was very expansive to say the least. Â There were plenty of options for both meat eaters and vegetarians alike, as well as people looking for comfort food or maybe a little something more adventurous. Â And speaking of comfort food, I opted for the hearty vegetarian shepard's pie. Â The soy sausage and gravy keeping the clouds of cheesy potatoes aloft were savory and delicious and had a unique tangy flavor I haven't really tasted anywhere else. Â The small side salad was also good, but both of those items made the little bland roll included seem like it had no business being there.
My wife took the adventurous route and opted for the vindaloo curry, which far from being spicey tomato sauce, actually ended up being complex and mouth searing. Â Fortunately, all the curries come with unlimited rice, so she was able to order more to stave off the worst of the heat. Â The garlic naan she ordered along with it was soft and pillowy, and had just the right amount of garlic for us (which is the vampire slayer level). Â I'm excited to go back and try some more of the curries when we're in the area.
So though our experience with Moon Under Water was limited and brief, we nonetheless enjoyed ourselves and will be returning to sample more of their impressive menu (and hopefully some of their spirits).
This was the first place I ever ate at in St. Pete. Great location and good food. I remember I ordered a tuna steak burger. After I asked for it to be done 'well' the waitress gave me a stink face. Sensing her disapproval, I asked, 'What do you think?' She suggested it rare, as she said it would dry out. She was right.
Eating out on the patio on a summer's evening while drinking a beer, I think about the story of why this restaurant has this name. Read the story on the back of the menu.
For location this place gets 5 stars. This area is very pleasant overall. All you need now is good beer and good food.
While waiting for a table (45 mins on a weekday?) we stated out with some Hoffbrau
The beer is mostly InBev so your all set if that's your thing. Fortunately for us 45 mins was more like 15 mins. On to the chow.
The appetizer special ended up being an unimpressive mix of deep fried mushrooms and stuffed peppers. I easily could have passed this one up.
My companion had the Mahi Mahi. They thought it was mediocre. Thats where I placed my Guiness burger and mash. The burger was just tough. Not necessarily overcooked - just tough.
Fortunately our server was friendly and attentive although getting the check at the end was a bit of a chore.
Overall the place is not bad, but I wouldn't make extrordinary efforts to try it again.
Definitely authentic fish and chips! All 4 of us had this dish and enjoyed every bite. Flaky fish, crispy batter served with a side of peas. Ask for curry sauce to dip, your chips too! Nice way to spend a very chilly 50 degree afternoon in St. Petersburg. Â
We started with an order of the sausage rolls - nice flaky puff pastry encasing tasty bangers - definitely ask for some brown gravy too.
Good selection of English beers and cider on tap. Wish this place was in my neck of the woods.
Service was very good. Â Highly recommended for a taste of the British isles.
I'm a huge fan of this place b/c I'm also a fan of European/English type pubs in America.
I've been here several times and I have never been disappointed. My first time going there for lunch was just last week and I had a wonderful Greek salad. My friend had the Feta Taboule Salad with black olives & red peppers and I have to say I was really jealous after trying it. I definitely recommend that.
I have also been here several times for dinner and if you like British food, then this is the place for you. The fish and chips is definitely my favorite.
Little weird thing that I really liked is that in the bathroom, they have soap that exfoliates your hands. Small minute detail, I know, but it's a fact I remember about this place.
The have traditional European beers and drinks if you are into that. Get a snakebite! You can't lose!
I usually sit at the bar when I'm here. Every time I've been there it's been busy, the service at the bar is usually good, and I haven't had anything I didn't like. I enjoy that they have an eclectic menu of salads, curries, British pub food, sandwiches, and entrees. The tabole and curry chicken salad is so yummy. Great flavors! This is my favorite place on Beach Dr.
Review Source:I love this place. Â A few things I like: Â British pubs, beer, Shephard's Pie, restaurants near the water, nice waiters and waitresses, good prices, curry.... this list could continue for a long time. Â The point of the list is - this place has something for everyone. Â The menu is extremely extensive and the wait staff has a great knowledge of the menu as well as the bar list. Â I have never had a bad experience here and I wish that I lived closer so that I could enjoy this place more often.
Speaking of location, this place is conveniently located in the heart of downtown St. Pete. Â It has a view of the water and the banyan trees. Â Parking can be a bit annoying, but honestly, I have never had a big problem with it. Â If you are in the downtown St. Pete area, you gotta check out Moon Under Water. Â It will be a fun and delicious experience!
Great atmosphere, attentive servers and yummy food. During my most recent visit I got the chicken sandwich and added mushrooms and cheddar. The chicken was awesome! I dont know how they got it to be super moist and juicy! They have an extensive drink menu and nice outdoor seating. If you do decide to stop here for a meal be sure to use the sugar scrub in the bathroom, your hands will be smooth all day!
Review Source:I was skeptical to come to The Moon Under Water since I knew it was a British Pub & figured the lunch options would be heavy & over priced. I was def proven wrong. I ordered a Tabbouleh, feta, walnut & cranberry salad. It came in a tortilla bowl with a side of hummus & pita wedges. It was fresh, delicious & visually appealing. Others at my table ordered coronation chicken salas & mediterranean chicken salad. Â The service was good & we enjoyed sitting outside on a nice Feb Florida day. I would like to come back for dinner & brews!
Review Source:Two Stars... We were a party of six on a Sunday night, after waiting for about 45 minutes  and watching people walk up and be seated we learned that it is the Resturant's "Policy" to only put together certain tables. But for the "Policy" we would have been seated in half the time. If it had not been so late we would have just left. They finally seated us at a table for four while the next table finished their coffee. Now the "Policy" made it uncomfortable for two people finishing a cup of coffee in a resturant with empty tables. It would have been nice to have been told the "Policy" when we arrived.
Now you know.
Couldn't do 4 stars because that just wasn't enough so I rounded up.
I'm there quite often and have been visiting for many years.
I've had perhaps the best hamburger and spiciest curry I've ever finished.
I've got to know the owner and bar staff over the years and perhaps that helps my opinion of the restaurant.
I enjoy the embiance and feel that their description suits the business " An Authentic British Colonial Tavern"
They fly a Welsh Dragon, usually a sign that something good will happen.
Fab British Pub!
I just love the location and traditional ambiance of this British pub! I feel like I'm in the British Virgin Islands every time I visit. The outdoor dining on the porch and sidewalk is my fav spot to be in St Pete!
I can only review the "Moon Signature Dish" chicken in a Tikha Masala  curry base with a rich and creamy red tandoori spice. It's served with basmati rice and pappadom.  I order it every time because it's so divine!
Completely agree with Brett. You will not be blown away by this place, but it's not atrocious either. Service is very good. Location is very good. Just do your due diligence and be choosy about what you order. I can't recommend what I ordered (haddock sandwich) because it was not good. But my friend had the taboule and that was stellar. Next time I will try the curry.
Warning: There is construction going on next door and it's VERY noisy if you are interested in eating al fresco.
This is probably my favorite restaurant and bar in st pete
First the food. AMAZING! the curry is spot on. Haven't had better in the states. Fish and chips are crispy and moist. You also have to try the fries and curry. zoo delicious.
The staff. Have never seen anything like it. Sit at the bar with eddie and brent and I promise you will have a great time. Good people go as well. Everyone is super friendly. Management is constantly walking around helping the staff and conversing with patrons.
Those who give this a bad rating much have had a nightmare about this place rather than visit it.
A great lunch spot due to its location & varied menu, but while the food is good, it's nothing out-of-this-world.
With perfect fall weather, I wanted to sit outside for lunch without breaking the bank. Yelp steered me to The Moon Under Water on Beach Drive in downtown St. Pete near the Vinoy Hotel. The outdoor seating is what really sets the place apart from other pubs... you can enjoy drinks and a meal in close proximity to the water with a nice view of the park across the street.
As for the food, which is British pub fare with Indian influences, it was fine but didn't leave me craving more. The chickpea appetizer has nice Indian flavors without being too potent - I recommend it with a side of raika and naan.
I tried some of the mojo chicken sandwich and the curried chicken salad. Of those two dishes, I preferred the mojo. The salad was okay, but I felt the chicken salad serving compared to the actual greens was disproportionate. Also, the curry is almost overpowering in this particular dish.
I was so excited for the Guinness Burger. I asked for medium rare. It was medium, if that, maybe even well done... I was disappointed. The Black and Blue (Guinness and Blue Moon) did make it a bit better. It was very crowded, and thus staff moved slow. Our staff was very nice, but overall I was not trilled with the experience. I think I overly hyped myself up with all the Yelp reviews.
I really liked the back story of the restaurant. British imperialist tricking Indians into fighting wars by dropping coins in their drink! Those darn Brits! I also like that you can choose to get British food or Indian food.
While I was not happy with my less than stellar Guinness Burger. My mom really liked her English Pasty (turnover) made with ground beef and vegetables in an herb gravy and wrapped in flaky pastry served with peas and choice of rice or fries.
My dad was also very impressed with his Open Faced Tandoori Chicken  made with 8oz breast of chicken marinated in tandoori spices served on naan bread with rice, onion/tomato salad and raita.
Neither of them had been reading all the hype on Yelp, so the did not get their expectations built up like I did. Overall, it was an interesting experience. We opted to sit inside, so that we would not have to wait for a table. Our food did not take too long to prepare. And the staff was very friendly. Had I not been built up so much, I might have given 3 or maybe even 4 stars. Maybe I just got unlucky and got the wrong Guinness Burger. It sounded so much better than mine turned out to be!
I have mixed feelings about Moon Under Water. It used to be one of the few great restaurants to go to. I remmeber going there a lot around the time I graduated. A few bad meals and bad service and the next time I returned wasn't until a few years later. On return the food and service was good. The prices have definately climbed over the years.
Went there recently and just had a glass of wine and the pierogies appetizer, which was pretty good. The outside patio area is a lovely area to dine and the place has a whole has a great, laid back, pub kind of feel.
I think this place will continue to be "just ok". I'll go there if someone wants to go there, but it's not ever going to be at the top of my list of places to go.
We hadn't been here for a while so we figured it was a good place to go on a rainy afternoon.
Not deterred by the massive construction going on next door we opted to sit outside on the patio (please mr construction man stop looking over the fence to see what people are eating` creepy!)
We were served by the daytime bartender who could not manage to make eye contact during the entire experience. Ordered a couple black and tans($6.00) and the hummus ($4.50) for a quick snack. The hummus was ok, slightly chunky like I like it, but a bit too much lemon.
Moving on we got the mac-n-cheese bites ($7.00) and the Cheese & Potato pierogies ($6.50). THe mac n cheese bites were ok, basic bar food, heavy breading outweighed the cheesy goodness. The pierogies were advertised to have grilled onions and spciy buffalo sausage with it. That was laughable! There were literally 4 round shavings of sausage with the dish. They were so thin you could see through them and no larger then a dime size each. The pierogies were ok, nothing special and rather bland even with the sweated (cause they were not grilled) onions.
After another rounds of black and tans we decided to split the vegi & tofu curry and made it a platter with raita, chutney and pappadom. With add ons it's about $18. For some reason vegi costs more then chicken here, weird. The vegi portion was mostly broccoli, no assortment here. The curry however is always good here. THe rice is perfectly made, the raita and chutney is just a yummy compliment to the spicy curry.
All in all, we'd go back, for drinks at the bar and curry, and nothing else. The porch area was taken care of by the daytime bartender and two waitressed but with only 5 tables taken the manager still had to come out to help them. I have no idea why service is so slow here. There was literally no one inside and one table gave their check and payment to the hostess when they tired of waiting for the server to come with it. And the serious lack of eye contact by our server bordered on weird, almost like it was intentional, very odd.
So yes, bar only from now on, I don't care how nice it is outside!
Ah, quite a popular place for Yelpers, by the 120+ reviews at the time of this review. Anyway, I was looking for a place in the St. Pete area for a few of us to try something new, with a nice relaxing atmosphere. This place definitely delivers.
The best quality about The Moon Under Water is the ambience it has. We sat outside as it was pretty nice out (October in Florida, ohhhh yeah) and their outdoor seating area is one of the best I've been to. It was nighttime so we couldn't see the water, but we watched as horse-drawn carriages strolled by, the lit-up trees, and just the variety of people that were out and about on a Saturday night. 5 stars alone for the place itself.
It took about 45ish minutes to get a table for 4 outside (requested outside seating) around 7:20pm on a Saturday - pretty typical of a popular place like this. It was fairly quiet outside, even having a road right next to us and a lot of people walking on the sidewalk. I was kind of surprised, but I'm definitely not complaining. Made it even nicer sitting out there. Going in to the restroom, it was pretty cold and noisy on the inside, so we were happy to be on the outside.
On to my fourth paragraph, I suppose I should start talking about the food at this restaurant. We started with some Mac & Cheese bites as an app - tasted great, although a bit small (2 bites at most). They also have 7 in a basket - a bit awkward if you have a group of 4 like we did. Anywho, there were good. As for dinners, we had the Guinness burger, a veggie curry dish, chicken sandwich, and fish & chips. Everyone really liked their dishes. I had the Guinness burger myself - they mix in Guinness carmelized onions in with the 8 oz patty for the burger - SO GOOD! Everyone was very satisfied with the menu.
Drinks? Good, strong drinks. They don't typically serve frozen rum runners but our server did it for one of us in our group. No complaints about the drinks from them!
Lastly, service. We had fantastic service, even with it being packed there. He came by often to ensure everything was ok and to make sure we didn't need refills at all. He carried on with us and made the evening even more enjoyable.
So to wrap everything up, we all had a fantastic, relaxing, and fun evening, and this place is definitely on the list of places for us to hit up in the future.
TIP - there's a small, privately-owned parking lot less than a block behind this building off of 4th Ave North. It was $3 and had no trouble getting a spot. Would recommend parking here and walking!
As we were staying at the B & B around the corner, we walked down to this charming place for dinner. We don't live in this exact area, and had never been here before, or heard of it. Maybe it was the extra sparkle due to it being our romantic anniversary weekend, not sure, but this place rocked!
The Chana masala with poppadom (I don't think they spelled it that way, but Google tells me that's how you spell it...) appetizer followed by the veggie tofu buttered curry was worthy of every one of the five stars. My guy felt the same way about his open-faced tandoori chicken sandwich - a house specialty. Loaded with our favorite Indian flavors, the portions were also generous.
Although it was a busy night, our service was prompt, attentive, helpful, and friendly.
Can't review the desserts...no need, as it was our anniversary night, after all ; ) Â !!
I don't know if all five stars are for the restaurant or our uniquely happy time there, so bear with me, but if you haven't tried it...go ahead. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
This was actually my second visit to The moon under water. We had a large group over the weekend for a birthday. I realize that have a table of 15 can be a night mare so I am understanding when dealing with a group of that size. With that said our waiter was horrible. I did actually end up calling the manager the next day and speaking with him about our server. The manager was very nice and understanding and promised to take care of the servers attitude problem.
I gave the restaurant 4 stars because I actually really like the food and beer list. I ordered the chicken moon under water special. My wife ordered the buttered curry with veggies. As I said before I was impressed with the food. I thought it tasted great.
I will be back because it is a cool spot to hang out and the prices aren't horrible. 35 dollars for two dinners and two beers is OK in my book.
Awesome spot to take out-of-towners who want to experience downtown St Pete.
The food is not exactly mind-blowing or memorable, it's pub fare - done well. The atmosphere and location are what takes this from 3 to 4 stars.
The English Pasty is good & tasty, but you run the risk of it being a little undercooked inside. Same with the pot pie.The bangers & mash is probably my favorite dish on the "British" menu, with no risk of a cool or lukewarm center. All these dishes do not disappoint, but neither are they unique or inspiring. All are generous in size and will leave you sated.
The exception to just "A-OK" is the Bread Pudding. Man, they do this RIGHT, with a warm creme sauce. We have been known to just stop by in the evening for a coffee and bread pudding.
I've been here many times, it's got a really good vibe and the service has always been great as well.
Went on a rainy Friday night. Went to the bar first. We started with a round on cocktails. Which I will tell you the first and only one I had knock me on my ass. Had water the rest of the time...LOL :)
For the main dish I went with the Haddock and Fries. Light and butter tasting. Really the best fish I have had since relocating here. Will definitely be back and often.
Sitting at an outdoor table in front of Straub Park on Beach Drive at twilight during the fall is enough to make any meal fantastic, so The Moon Under Water has a lot going for it before even placing a food order. Actually, I do not think I EVER sat inside and I've been many times!
The very best meal I've experience at The Moon was when the chef brought out a Korean grill to the sidewalk and prepared a wonderful steak stir-fry dish right in front of the outdoor tables. My go-to meal is the Green Curry with Chicken, served with rice (somehow some the best tasting rice I've ever had but it looks like any old ordinary rice) and pappadom which is great for scooping up the last morsels from the bottom of the bowl. I used to get the Pasty and it was okay, but the Curry really blows it away. I also always order the whole leaf tea to drink. You steep it yourself at the table with a smart tea maker. You can make it hot or iced and they have a really good selection, I usually get the passion fruit flavor.
My Dad is a fan of the fish and chips, always looking huge, golden and fluffy. My mom says next time she goes she is getting the pot pie after we witnessed a nearby table receive it with what looked to be a 3-inch-tall puff pastry on top.
The Moon Under Water is a very popular DTSP spot, it can fill up quick, getting seated usually happens pretty fast, however I have had to wait pretty long for food to come out. BUT, the servers have always been really nice and attentive, and I take into consideration that good food probably needs a little more time to prepare. If you have out-of-town visitors, bring them down to this Beach Drive spot to impress them.
