Proud fag hag not satisfied. The drinks are way too over priced and the place is not even hopping. The bartenders are not the most attentive unless you are dropping serious cash and you are guys. Like the women don't have money? WTF The music was blah and the environment was the same. There are better places in Lincoln road. It use to be Halo and I use to get my pre drinking here before hitting up other clubs and bars, but it is not good. Everybody that kept going in the would go right out and wouldn't hang for at least a hot minute. Sad
Review Source:I came last year on Halloween night because the best party on Lincoln was on Michigan Ave that night. Elmo, Bert and Ernie, Mario, Luigi and Wario all jamming outside with the tallest group of " stewardesses " I have even seen with real airline liquor carts giving out real drinks and shots.
I asked for a Vesper Martini to be smart and she/ he /whatever actually had lillet !!!
All these was centered outside MOVA so I asked/ dared  to go in and I did. It was nice enough super bright , pink and purple which now seems normal with so many years in Miami now. The drinks were ok, service very good considering what day it was - crowd was festive .
All in All on bar but there could have been more girls there but maybe I went on an off night :)
Where all the ladies at? Oh yes, I was at a gay bar masquerading as a straight bar. I am a fan of MOVA the bartender makes great drinks and the boys are good looking and they aren't trying to be disgusting and hit on me using annoying pick-up lines. So, want a chill bar with good cocktails that you can still here yourself think at ? MOVA is your place. Plus, the atmosphere is beautiful.
Review Source:OK, I will try to be fair impartial in this review. I base it on a few things. The most important one is that I don't believe that a bar like this belongs in South Beach. I could see it thriving elsewhere, like it's other location in DC, or even Chelsea. Not here. This is a casual beach community. The service there is terrible compared to other local bars where the staff makes it a point to extend a feeling of camaraderie. I have been there when the staff outnumber the patrons, and you sit and wait while they talk amongst themselves. They pride themselves on their extensive specialty drink menu, but the prices are outrageous.
That said, it has a very cool interior, cool lighting, and OK music.
I came here on a Thursday night so I was one of very few guys in the place but that was okay. I know it sounds odd that a bar + few guys + many women = no chance of any Funky Cold Medina but hey: you're at MOVA on Thursday. Ladies love cool James and each other here. It's all good.
The lounge moniker is quite appropriate because above anything else, this is a lounge, in particular: a Miami lounge. There's white furniture, florescent purple lights, thumping dj soundtrack, expensive drinks, and pretty people. Working in its favor, people seemed to be in a good mood, having a good time. This isn't a place one comes to dance but I didn't see anyone sporting duck lips or blue steel as they made their way through the night. I observed and overheard many genuine laughs and conversations. For my part, I enjoyed a good number of nicely-created cocktails. I told the bartender what i was in the mood for and he came up with something. Unlike the fantasies that color Nick M's sick mind, the above sentence means only that I was greeted with a stiff drink as per my request. Er. Hmm. I think I'll stop while I'm ahead. Um. I mean... Damn you, Nick M!
On a trip to Miami a few months ago I decided to spend my Thursday night at the Sweet party at MOVA. I was in town for a conference and went to MOVA on my own. I travel solo somewhat often for work and pleasure and some cities and venues are more comfortable for a solo traveler than others. I'm pretty comfortable and secure in myself, but there are some places that are intended for dates and groups of friends. I had a great time at MOVA and could easily see bringing friends too. However I wouldn't consider it a good first date spot because the music is so loud.
The patrons seemed pretty friendly and open to talking to me. They were also rather fashionable, diverse, and there was a good mix of femme and butch women. Â The DJ was pretty great and definitely made me want to get out of my seat. The lay out of the place makes dancing an option as well as sitting on comfy ottoman style seats. I love places that offer both. I love to shake my booty, but a grrrl's gotta rest and drink her martinis. The drinks weren't spectacular, but the bartenders were friendly and prompt and there was a happy hour most of the night so the drinks were fairly inexpensive.
There was one rather unpleasant incident that night that I have not encountered at any other LGBTQ bar in the US. I was in line for the bathroom (this place only has 2 or 3 single use bathrooms) and it was moving rather slow. There was one woman ahead of me and she was, shall we say, a raging bitch. I noticed her earlier in the night and she had a scowl on her face all night and had an air of superiority as well.
Bitchy chick is now in the bathroom and suddenly there were several women behind me. One of these women banged on the bathroom door and said "andale andale." Her tone was not the slightest bit rude or bitchy. It was the sort of thing you hear out of women who have 4 drinks kicking their bladder around.. All of sudden the bathroom door is kicked open hard and there stands bitchy girl with her arms at her side in a fight stance. She comes out of their like she's out for blood. I scooted around her, ran in the bathroom, and locked door. While I'm doing my business I hear women screaming, banging into the walls and doors, and glass breaking. I decided to stay in the bathroom an extra minute or two until things died down. Obviously a fight broke out, but was broken up fairly quickly.
Later that night I see the blood thirsty bitch at the bar. The bouncers hadn't thrown her out! That was unbelievable to me. I don't know if this sort of thing is common in Miami bars, but I've never seen anything more than some minor dyke drama or pissy words being exchanged between people at a gay club. I'll go back if I find myself in South Beach again, but it definitely lowered my opinion of the place.
I used to come here many, many moons ago. It has changed a lot. It used to be this, used to be that, then my last time in Sobe it was Halo Lounge and now it is Mova. It was pretty cute. I came on a Monday with a few of my local Miami friends for Karaoke and it was really enjoyable. The drink specials that night were $5 martinis which is pretty straight-forward.
This lounge is definitely more quiet than most others and it is a lot of locals. I didn't get the vibe that there were tourist around. I think that's a good thing. I don't like going to a city that I frequent a lot and be stamped a tourist! I hate tourist!
For newcomers to the Sobe scene....I would definitely consider starting the night here but ending somewhere else like Twist or Score.
My second favorite gay bar -- sorry, Twist will always be #1, it's just that much bigger, it's really not a fair fight. Â For what it is, a small lounge that used to be a restaurant, Mova is above par. Â
The biggest pluses: Â Even the well is what would be considered " premium " at most bars ( Finlandia and Stoli are the wells most night, Grey Goose on Saturday ), and they carry super-premiums like Stoli Elite, Gentleman Jack. Â You won't find that at Twist! Â Another note: this is not a place to drink beer. Â They carry Bud Light, Miller Lite, Corona and Peroni, that's it. Â This is a true lounge, where the bartenders know how to craft a cocktail, whether a martini or a Caipirinha. If you want beer you should go next door to the straight Irish bar, better selection and price.
The other big plus: the bartenders, especially Rodney and Alex. They are the two Brazilian bartenders and make the best drinks, they are very skilled at what they do.
The prices have come down in the past year, a smart move by the management as I agree the prices were too high previously.
The guideline here: Friday night is best, Saturday is second best, arrive after 10, the place will be packed between 11:30 and 12:30, when people will start leaving to go to either Score or Twist. Â They have a fun Wednesday night called " College Night " where Finlandia Vodka is only $4. Â Sunday nights are a mixed bag, one night it may be crazy, another night quiet.
This is not a " cruise " bar; if you don't go with friends  or the boyfriend/husband/trick-of-the night and just stand around the bar, you will stand out big time. Â
You will also notice it is more locals than tourists except for big events such as White and Winter Parties and at the height of season Jan to March. Â It tends to be more of a Sobe and Brickell/Midtown crowd also, so it can get a little bitchy at times. :-)
Bottom line: GO! You will either love it or hate it.
I was here 2 weeks ago for the second time. The first time we came, they were having some sort of bingo game hosted by a drag queen. The second time, it was Saturday and much later in the night so they were in lounge mode and had a woman singing some dance songs.
The atmosphere is nice and the people are attractive. Typical of south beach, the drinks are expensive but strong and there is no cover.
Karaoke in a chic decor gay bar in south beach? Ok, sure.
This place was fun on a Monday night. Slow to start, the night was rainy, but then things picked up around 11, met some people, danced around, had some fun, and sang drunkenly to terrible backstreet boys classics.
Crowd was all 20 something.
The drink list is awesome. Half price early evening, really expensive later.
The epitome of a south beach bar. Very trendy, chic, and modern. It's tiny though so don't expect a large venue with tons of different rooms. It's just the one room. Drinks are mad expensive too, but most places in SoBe are like that. Great crowd, trendy Latina, femme women, and their gay boys-- gotta love it. Good music, and hot bartenders. Right on Lincoln Rd and just a few blocks from the beach. Perfection!
Review Source:If I could give this place zero stars I would. They have one of the meanest, rudest DJ's I have ever met. I specifically signed up for yelp just so I could review this place for their horrible DJ. The DJ was so awful to me it completely soured my night from that point on. I could understand if I had been bugging him all night, coming up after every song, requesting something off the wall. But before I even said a word to him he looked at me and said, "Ugh not again. What now." it proceeded to get even worse and more cruel from there until I just walked away. There's no reason to be cruel to someone who hasn't even said a word to you. Aside from the fact that I was a customer in this instance, that's just being a sucky human being. I won't EVER go here again & neither will any of my friends. I don't need to be humiliated and belittled on the one night every 3 months I get to go out & have fun with my friends.
Review Source:As a repeat visitor of SoBe I went here when it was Halo and now Mova (some licensing thing with the names) - this is one of two Movas I know of in the US, the other in DC
It is a rather local bar ... it is a little hard to really interact with the other patrons ... the drinks are overprices and not as "pretty" as you would expect for a $15 Speciality Pineapple Martini (came in plastic cup) but it is a nice place to start off at since most things in SoBe don't get going to after 1am.
I would not go alone ... I would not go before 10pm and I would not stay after 1am ... other than that, it's a bar ... they do play good music which makes up sometimes for the bad drinks and scenary (people watching) --- you do get to crowd through the outside smokers which is amusing.
If you really want to go out, and don't want to pre-party at home, go here, otherwise, I would suggest grabbing a late dinner somewhere instead and just drinking there pre-Score or Twist

Review Source:Halo is one of those pretentious gay bars where everyone stands around clenching an over-prices drink and is too afraid or stuck up to speak with (or make contact with) anyone new. Â The bar staff is pretty but business-like and untalkative. Â The music is also loud making it hard to talk, Â I would recommend this place if you are looking for a fancy gay bar to have drinks with a group of friends., and then go out somewhere else on South Beach.
Review Source:One night I was out w/some friends and we were supposed to go to Set, to see Miguel Migs spin. Â We were supposed to be on the list, but I guess we weren't. Â So we headed off to Buck 15 and the line there was huge, so we backed off of that place.
Plane C became Halo. The door guy gave us some playful "greetings straight couples" type welcome. Â As I let my friends in ahead of me, I asked the doorman what was a good cocktail here. Gay bars always have specialty drinks, right? : ) Â He said 'the Elder Father Fizz" Â
I KNEW IT! Â See, I know what's up! Â : )
The bar was crowded and the music was good and blaring, my friend asked me what I wanted to drink, as he was buying the first round for the 4 of us. Â I told him I wanted the Elder Father Fizz. Â 5 minutes later, still no drink. Â By this time, my friend AND the bartender are both looking at me, asking what I want to drink. Â There appeared to be some confusion, so I told the bartender directly and he laughed.
He said " your friend was asking for an Old Man Piss" Â We laughed and enjoyed our cocktails. Â It's not a mixed, mostly gay crowd; it's an all gay crowd. Â So if you're gay, or comfortable in the environment, go check it out. Â It's small, but not too small. Â The bar is trendy, the sound system is pretty solid, and the staff is real friendly. Â Don't forget to order the Elder Father Fizz, correctly. Â You'll be glad you did : )
BTW: Â I checked off above that they have outdoor seating....hmm yes and no. Â They set up plastic lounge chairs on the sidewalk. Â So it barely qualifies as such, just an FYI
Behold, I tell you a great mystery of how a bar in New York called XL (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/xl-bar-and-lounge-new-york-2#hrid:LiZD62CZMbY6oLUrN8adoA">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>) shut down a year or two ago and was reborn in Miami Beach as Halo, resurrecting not only itself, but a bygone era of gay bars - an era filled with muscly, plucked boys in tight t-shirts, crazy neon/black lighting and white decor, thumping dance-remixes of pop-diva classics, and heavy, heavy cruising.
While one could argue that there is still many a gay bar in NYC and all over the country that follows this formula, when XL closed, putting the final nail in the coffin for Chelsea as the gay center of New York, I think the homo-bars realized that they needed to do something different to keep up.
And to be fair, Halo is a bit nicer than XL was, particularly in the liquor department (Hendricks for my G&T! Â Woohoo!). Â But seeing as how Miami's always a bit behind in the trends, the local boys were dying for this sort of thing - it's been packed to the gills every time I've visited in recent years. And while there'll always be a place in my heart for Score down the block - the first gay bar I ever went to - Halo is definitively the nicest place for booze and boys in Miami. I just wish they had thought outside the box a little.
This is my kind of bar: modern, small, and great drinks. The bartenders are all trained so that you never get a bad drink. They have been written up several times both here and at the location in D.C. for their mojitos that come in a dozen different flavors. I always love their martini's.
The space is small, lounge styled with low/wide couches at either end and high two story ceilings, dimly lighted with some high-tech looking color machine. It's a nice change from the other watering holes in SoBe where I know I'll always see pretty faces.
Beware, this place can get busy! 11:00-12:00 is probably their peak times and you can anticipate to wait a few minutes to get in. Most begin their nights here and then meander to the dance clubs around the corner.
Drink prices is something everyone always talks about and they are high for such a small bar, however, their drinks are made with top shelf alcohol - something I really appreciate.
I like to come Wednesdays when all day is half price drinks - after 1:30 the drinks are half priced too.
ENJOY!
I can't stand this place. There I said it. And what?
It's so full of itself with it's fancy lighting and ambient lighting. The drinks are way overpriced. The music, always sucks and the place is way too small for the amount of muscle queens that frequent this place.
It's all about the name and the decor that makes this place a hotspot but I'm sorry, I wasn't impressed with my $11 vodka cranberry. Seriously?! I prefer my gayspots dark, dingy and cheap..a la Twist!
This is an OK bar/lounge, it's not huge and can get packed with people pushing to get through the crowd and the lighting is a bit odd (see photo). Â It's on one of the side streets off of Lincoln Rd. Â I've been here for happy hour a few times on the weekend, usually to grab a pre-dinner bevy.
Review Source:I like this place. Â Went for the first time when one of Edison's Martini Nights was hosted there. Â
Great Manhattan lounge feeling. Â It's a nice departure from the rest of the gay lounge offerings on the Beach...not that there's a ton of them anymore. Â
Can't speak to the drink prices as I was ordering the special martinis for the occasion which were $8. Â Bartenders are pretty. Â Atmosphere is nice. Â Lighting is good but has just the right amount of dimness to hide the fine lines for the boys in their 30 and above, and with enough gentle pink tint to hide the uneven skin of the boys still in their 20's. Â
Nice place. Â Not a club...not completely a bar. Â Mostly a lounge. Â Perfect!
