I couldn't agree with Sven more.... The old Mr. Sub was out of this world.  Not much has changed inside aesthetics wise, so you'd probably assume it was all the same, but it's not.

The "new" owner worked there back under the old owner, so I don't think the changes are part of some radical regime change.  I think it comes down to cutting costs.  When the Boulevard was shut down for a week for construction, I walked up there and was talking with the new owner.  He was pretty upset and admitted that if the road (and parking) didn't open up again soon, he might go out of business.

The old bread, wherever they bought it was amazing.  The new supply isn't bad, but it's not as good.  Prices are high, ~$10 for a whole depending on what you get, for the quality.

Growing up, I thought the old owner was actually "Mr. Sub" but I've come to find out that it must have been a franchise at some point.  I don't think there is much similarity from location to location.  There is one in Union with the same sign font (call me crazy, but I notice that stuff) and it doesn't seem to have anything in common.  Also, if you're a hockey fan you may have noticed a "Mr. Sub" advertisement on the boards for some teams.  Don't be confused, the one in Kenilworth is not that!

I still stop in once or twice a month to help support a local business, but it's no longer my first sub stop.  To be honest, one of the 3 stars is a nod to nostalgia, but I couldn't put anything less than 3 for a childhood haven.

This place, under its original owner, was arguably one of the top 5 sub shops in New Jersey.

Well, fuggetaboudit.  The new owner has cheapened everything, right down to the stale, tasteless bread.  It took the girl behind the counter half an hour to make two subs because she seemed to be under the impression that she was getting paid to talk on her cell phone at the expense of food prep.

I miss the original Mr. Sub.
