I really like this place!
I love that it is hidden and out of the way. I love that it is not easy to find, but it is so worth it when you arrive. I look forward to my beer flight and then ordering a pint of my favorite afterwards. I try to go at least once or twice a month to sample beers and and I also order their wings. My favs are the Caribbean wings which reminds me of Jerk Chicken which is a major favorite dish of mine. This place is a gem and I don't want to share it with anyone!
One note: I think the beer flights can be much colder when served. On the seveal occasions that I have been there, my flights were cold, but boarding on room temp if you let them sit more than 5 minutes.
The servers are so friendly and there is always a smile. If you are looking for a quickie experience, this is not the place for you. I like that they take their time and between meal or drink delivery they just let you converse and chill. Haven't been a fan of the live music though, but I'm biased against any pop song sung with a blue grass twang. If that's your thing, then go for it.
I really like this place, although there are a few areas I feel need some improvement. First off, the beer is awesome. They offer a sampler so you can try everything they have to offer, my husband and I usually split this and then from there decide what we want to continue drinking for the rest of our visit. It's a pretty cool place to hang out and the outdoor seating area is nice even though it's a little small. My only complaint is that every time I have eaten here, our orders never come out right (missing things, mine and my husbands toppings getting mixed up on each others dishes, etc.). The food is tasty but I feel like there could be a little more variety.
The beer will still bring me back here, and I'll give the food a few more chances...it's not bad, but I would just like to receive what I ordered.
This was our first stop on a craft beer whirlwind weekend visit, and it set a nice tone for our trip. Â The staff was very friendly, and we loved the communal style table down the middle of the room. Â We had a fruit/cheese plate to snack on with our two flights of beer. Â The plate was okay, but the beer was better. Â The Deep Sea Stout was my favorite :-)
Definitely worth a visit if you're seeking local beer in York!
We hit this place last weekend on the way to a micro pub around the corner. Â As we came around the corner we saw a band playing outside. Â We headed to the door, but were stopped and told her had to pay $2 a person to walk any further. Â Ok, it's only $2 a person, but really what did I care about who was playing outside when all I wanted to do was go in and get something to eat.
The 3 of us walked in and were seated right away. Â A little bit of time went by before someone took our drink orders. Â A LOT more time went by before we actually got our drinks. Â We ordered 2 burgers and an order of fries which we didn't think was going take that long, but it definitely did. Â By the time we were on our 2nd beers it felt like half the night passed by.
Although the menu is small, the food is good. Â From what I've tasted the beer is good. Â They have enough of a beer variety to cover most people's tastes. Â I see that a lot of other people's reviews talk about slow service so I hope that the word gets back to management and they speed things up, because i like this place.
So I have been here twice now, first time we just had the beer sampler and left. Went on First Friday for dinner. We were told to expect the wait to be about 30 minutes, but in reality, we waited maybe 10. The menu is pretty limited: 10 starters and 3 sandwiches. Get your choice of a hamburger, hot dog, or chicken. However, there are 13 versions of these sandwiches or you can build your own.
For appetizer we choose the Hot Taco Dip - Layers of spicy ground beef, salsa, sour cream, cheddar cheese, & jalapenos baked to perfection & served with tortilla chips. It was pretty darn tasty! Yes the meat was spicy, but not overbearing at all.
We sandwiches, both choose burgers: She had The Magoo - Mustard, Dill Pickle, Cheddar Cheese, and BBQ Chips (the chips are ON the burger) and I choose Chicago Style - Yellow mustard, Chopped Onions, Sweet Pickle Relish, Dill Pickle Spear, Sliced Tomato, & a Dash of Celery Salt. Since cheese is not an option on this burger I added Cheddar. These burgers are NOT the pre-made patties, but a really nice fat burger.
Sadly though they were both over cooked. We both like our meat med rare and ordered that way. We got well done. Though my burger had some good tastes, it was extremely dry. She enjoyed her burger and it wasn't as dry as mine was.
As far as service goes, I have no complaints. They were really busy and she kept are drinks full. The kitchen was a little slow (doesn't take long to cook a burger), but we chalked that up to being busy.
These burgers combined with the starter was plenty of food and we left stuffed and satisfied. She enjoyed the Peach Wheat beer (Flavor of the Month) and I enjoyed the Deep Sea Stout.
I'll definitely be going back a third time
Yes, one star. Â And that's really only because I did enjoy their beers for the most part. Â However, I had to wait long enough to be recognized and have it served to me that I had a rather bitter taste in my mouth from the beginning. Â
It started with trying to find the place. Â I was with a friend (both of us from out of town) and between the map I printed out and both of our GPS systems telling us where to "turn" we ended up going around the block several times. Â We were both so annoyed that I finally said, "Just pull over!" thinking we would just walk and find it since my GPS was telling me we were on top of the place. Â As soon as we parked the car, I got out to see a small sign on the corner for Mudhook Brewing with an arrow pointing down this alley. Â This, to our surprise, was Cherry Lane. Â The road we had been looking for. Â The street sign is not on the street, which would have been helpful. Â Instead, it is on the side of the Cental Market House. Â Ugh. Â They need better signage. Â
All I wanted by this point was alcohol. Â We grabbed a table and waited. Â And waited. Â And waited. Â And waited. Â And....you get the point. Â There was only one other table occupied and some people at the bar. Â We watched the employees doing things that clearly could wait until after you attend to customers. Â Like pouring mustard from one jar to another. Â Seriously.
After a long wait, we were finally acknowledged. Â But not by our server. Â Our server then came over, apologizing that she didn't notice us. Â Except then we continued to wait for everything. Â We ordered samplers. Â There were not enough beers to explain the wait. Â We also ordered the cheese plate for $7. Â Being next to the Central Market House, we of course expected some delicious local cheese and breads. Â Instead, we were served cubed cheese that was nothing out of the ordinary (cheddar, pepper jack, swiss), crackers that came out of a box and the infamous honey mustard that they claim is their own recipe but really just tastes, as my friend commented, like it's from Wendy's.
I would not recommend this place unless you just want to try the beers. Â And in that case, I would recommended only sitting at the bar where everything is right there and you can't be ignored. Â Beware, Mudhook may say they open at 4pm, but they don't start working until 5.
The seating is fine, the beer average, the food very expensive for what it is.
What is most off-putting about this place is the service. When we went, it took us half an hour to get a simple order of nacho chips. We're not talking chips with cheese, sour cream, and extras--just dry chips and a cup of salsa. The waitress kept apologizing, though this didn't speed things up.
We then waited an hour (no exaggeration) for our main order--sandwiches (a burger and a hotdog). In the meantime, we had to keep going to the bar if we wanted beer. (When the waitress wasn't apologizing, she would disappear for long stretches; and she never offered to bring us additional beverages.) This did not make for a relaxing experience.
Interestingly, while we were waiting around, we had plenty of time to watch other patrons. Again and again, people had to go up to the bar and make a point of asking for the check. And then they waited and waited while it was prepared. At least three parties came in, sat down, and then left because nobody attended to them.
It seems like people want to go here, but the people who work at Mudhook have no interest in taking care of their clientele. Â
Do not waste your time. Or, if you have time to waste, go here, and the staff will certainly do so for you.
I Â stopped by here yesterday after writing my review. Â Although I still stand by my original review below, I've updated this to 3 stars. Â Seems like they're really trying to make some changes to improve the place so we'll see where this place is in a few months.
I went there with a group of people during the first week that Mudhook opened. Â Being craft beer enthusiasts we were all thrilled to have a brew pub here in town. Â During this first visit it was pretty packed, had a good energy amongst the staff, and had a good, yet small, atmosphere.
Beer:
It took forever for us to get our samplers, not really acceptable with only 5 beers on tap but the place was new so we let it slide. Â When the beers arrived we all tasted and compared opinions. The beer was very plain, nothing exciting here. Â Their stout is pretty good but still nothing made it stand out from the other stouts we've had.
Mug Club:
We all inquired about being members of the mug club since we don't have any brew pubs here in York. Â I think the price was around $50 which isn't too bad considering you get a 20oz pour instead of 16oz. Â With the membership you get a growler, tshirt, and mug. Â Unfortunately growler fills are an astounding $18 a fill..... $18 bucks a fill, that's insanity. Â Mug club members get no discount on an $18 growler fill which means you'd be better off ordering 3 beers and pouring them into your growler your self rather than have them do it (not that you would, but it just shows the craziness of the price).
Unlike most GOOD mug clubs, none of the mugs are custom in any way, theres no number designation, name etching, or anything else. Â All of the mug club mugs are plain glass with their logo on them. Â We are in York, PA. Â I alone personally know about 5 artists in this city, York is about art and creativity.. You can't tell me that Mudhook couldn't find a local artisan to hand craft their mugs for them! Â That feature alone would get me to be a part of their mug club. Â Well that and CHEAPER GROWLER FILLS.
Food:
Their menu is a weird concept that doesn't seem to work very well. Â First you choose whether you want a burger, a chicken sandwich, or a hot dog. Â Then you pick from a selection of pre set toppings.
The problem with this is that some of the topping sets are obviously for hot dogs, obviously for burgers, etc. Â it just doesn't make sense. Â
On top of that, their name is Mudhook...... Why is there not a good fish and chips on the menu?????
Quality of the food is ok, nothing spectacular. Â Their nachos are covered in watery chilli, no nacho cheese, and their salsa is basically chopped onion and tomato, pretty bland.
Service:
I've been to Mudhook about 6 times now and every time I go I'm hoping that it will get better as they figure things out .....but it's not looking so good.
Every time we go here the service is awful. Â I'm pretty sure that there is no one actually managing the floor in this place. Â Theres always a ton of wait staff yet every one of my experiences here has been: drinks are slow to come out, I never get asked for a refill on my brew until the glass has been empty for far too long, and the food always takes forever to come out.
Overall opinion:
The inside of the pub is nice but a little small. The outdoor patio is nice however service tends to be even slower outside than inside. Â Bar service is slow, I've been in here right after work, around 5, with not too many people in the place yet the bartender still took more than 10 minutes to even acknowledge me and take my drink order.
I think that if this place was better managed it would do wonders and the owners would see much more profit. Â I don't particularly like Mudhook but theyre a local brewery and I still try to support them.
I've been here twice since they opened- once with friends and once with my husband. I think it's pretty pricey, but compared to some of the other places in York I was pretty happy with the quality of the food (so were friends and hubby). I've tasted the buffalo chicken dip (needs more chicken), the buffalo chicken sandwhich (perfect), a burger with mustard and onion (this is what hubby ordered- i thought it to be decent), and  the crab dip (yum).
I've only tasted the Irish Red and I liked it. I don't normally like beer, but my waitress pointed out the Irish Red because it wasn't as "hoppy", which is apparently what makes beer bitter.
I'd go back again, but won't be often because of the price.
Oh, and if you go on a Saturday night and plan on eating make sure you arrive before 730. We waited over an hour for a table, and hung at the bar drinking and orderings apps.
Love the pub! The selection of food is a nice change from the chain standards.
The brews are yummy, but I feel the seasonal selections don't change as quickly as they should.
The one thing to watch out for... On Saturday nights they try to do live music. If you see that Scott Martin Live is playing, RUN AWAY! One of the worst public performances i have ever been subjected to. Â Guitar is out of tune and his voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard. PLEASE!!!! DO NOT rebook this guy! I will skip mudhook the next time he is here. He RUINED the mood!
I was impressed! The atmosphere was perfect for a smaller brewpub. The food was on par. I had a burger with cheddar and BBQ sauce (my fav) and fries. And the beer...ah, the beer! I had the Oktoberfest, and I seriously think it was the best of that style that I've ever had (too bad it's seasonal). It had a subtle spice which made it perfect. Beers are $4.50 / pint, but during Happy Hour(s) from 4-6, they are $3.50. A sampler of all 4 house beers is $5.50, which is a pretty good value. They also have growlers. I could get to be a regular here very fast. Also, I am very glad to see this type of an establishment in York - we need more!
Review Source:I think this is a great addition to York and has a great location. However with that said I have had better. From the beer selection I enjoyed the Steam Ale the most. The beers lacked body and were still good but I have had much better homebrews. The food was ok as well nothing that really knocked my socks off. Service could have been better and from watching he servers I don't think they have much knowledge of brew pub style beer. Water should be at the table when it comes to craft beers, thats just a given. I had to remind our waitress twice to bring us our water. I will give it a little time and give them a try again. I'm hoping for better results next time.
Review Source:I loved the beer, especially the seasonal peach wheat. The food was also very good. My first visit I had the Greek hamburger & fries. I highly recommend it. Next time I stopped in on Fiesta wednesday & had a chicken quesadilla. It was excellent & I don't even like Mexican food! The  staff was very friendly  &  I like the pub atmosphere.  I stop in every week to try the  weekly sandwich specials & take advantage of Happy Hour!
Review Source:The beers are average and you can find something for you even if your not into smaller brew companies.
We got their salsa and chips as an app...wow garlic explosion! It was so bad that after 2 bites we gave it back to the server, she was nice and took it off the bill while appogizing.
We did try one of their greek hot dogs, it was very good. Â
The nice thing about their menu is you can order any of their sandwhiches as a burger, chicken or a hot dog. Â Lots of fun!
Sawthis place when cavorting around town and took two Yorkers with me to check it out.  It's nice to have a another selection near the square to enjoy.  Had the amber ale and chips and salsa as we were just bar cruising.  Would have tried the 5 flavor sampler but was with friends. The ale was refreshing but the salsa was unlike any I've had.  Let's just say the chef has never been near Mexico y no comprendes' espanol.  They wouldn't let us on the patio because of a group which only occupied one end.  Overall an ok place for one stop of  a multiple bar journey downtown.
Review Source:I stopped in for a pint, no more no less. I asked a few questions and one thing stood out that I was unsure of - the pricing. I asked why the prices were what they are since other establishments seem to sell their beer at a more reasonable price and was told I was being argumentative. I thought it was a fair question why a screw top 64oz growler filled with beer is $24.95 and the refill is 18 since that was what I asked, but it must be a sore subject. I think the mug club idea is not necessarily bad considering you get a few more ounces per serving, a shirt and growler but at $50 it is a bit spendy. I had my pint and moved on. The rest of the crew besides the person I mentioned were friendly and gave me good information about the place so I will basically keep the score even since I was given a 'taste' of an ounce or two of the other tapped offerings. The menu seems simple, yet also pricey since they are selling hot dogs, hamburgers and chicken sandwiches with some other appetizers like wings, loaded fries etc. The burger is $8 and 1 lb hot dog with toppings is $4.50 so you get the idea.
The selection and quality could be better -4 beers that are just a notch above ordinary. I think most brewpubs have more than 4 standards these days, I understand they are just starting out and will have rotating seasonals, but it is your basic -Pale, Irish red, Amber ale and stout line-up which everyone can find at Rock bottom, it just lacks imagination and seems to cater to those who just want what is familiar. I am all for local business when it enhances the market, but I kind of felt let down especially after they promoted themselves as 'an anchor to the downtown marketplace' I see a lot of creativity from local business in York, but this spirit is lacking in Mudhook. The beer is a bit pricey considering you aren't getting a unique offering and the atmosphere alone is not enough to bring me back. I hope the reconsider either the product or the pricing to keep in line with what the market has established. The place could have potential if they choose to accept feedback, but as it is being the new place on the block is not enough to bring me back. I would love to support local business and I would like to see them succeed so I will check back in a couple months to find out how things are going.
Things may get better here since it's only been a week since they opened. The sampler of the four beers they have on draft is truly uninspiring. The beers were all a little "off." When something is billed as a stout I shouldn't be able to see through it. We only had one appetizer and it was okay. Nothing great, nothing awful. The service was very good. Hopefully the brewer will figure out what he's doing quickly because right now the star attraction, the beer, isn't at all good. Also, the growler fills($18) are way overpriced for the ABV.
