The bartender on Monday and Tuesday nights is pretty hot.

Oh wait, this has to be about the actual establishment...

Well okay let's see. It's your typical Irish pub atmosphere, on Monday nights they have a band playing so that's cool, and the bartender's butt looks faaannnttaaass...

    Uhhhh -

    Let me start this again.

You can order food and eat it at the bar, where the bartender will make you four 7&7s that will inevitably lead to your downfall and have no less than three groups of guys, age range 25 to 83, hit on you and try to get you to Dubai/their boat/let them kiss the spider bites you were complaining about earlier.

Great place to up your self esteem. Wear something revealing...or don't, they'll hit on you anyway. The pours are steep enough that you can forget all about how sad this should make you.

Tip your bartender with more than just your number, otherwise you look like an asshole. Maybe put it ON a $20?

I biked here on St Pat's for some all you can eat corned beef...no cabbage though, yuck! I can't really say much about this place since I haven't frequented it. The guy did hook me up with a free beer, so I gotta give em 5 stars just for that!

Went in for a drink last night 1/15/13, we were there about 45 minutes or so.  While we were sitting there talking a watching tv we saw a rat, yes a rat, skittering along the ledge just below the ceiling.  Thankfully we had already closed our tab, so we left right away!  I just called to talk to a manager and was told he wasn't in yet, but he could take a message.  I let him know what we saw last night and he didn't seem a bit surprised nor did he offer any sort of apology.  I'm writing this in hopes that the management sees this because I doubt the help that answered the phone today will be passing on my message.  I've worked in the restaurant/bar industry and rodents should not be taken lightly!  Disgusting!

Great dive bar of you are sick of the yuppie scene.  There are always great cover bands and $2.50 pbr.  The only drawback is that the place is a little too small for live bands which can be too loud at times.

Fun place to go for my co-workers and I on Friday nights...live music and lots of opportunities for people watching!  The bartenders are friendly and quick for us...probably because we're one of the few 20-something year old girls there :)

We often encounter older drunk guys getting a little too friendly, but the bartender actually kicked someone out last time we were here which made us very happy campers!

This is a dive bar. It is like every other dive bar ever.

It's mellow on Monday nights. Lots of older folks, but you can't really beat $3 beers.

I have never met such a rude staff. They were extremely unfriendly.

Cheap drinks. A few days out of the week there is a live band, jazz or blues. The bartenders are friendly and cute ;) I got for the drinks and the good company.

There is a large patio area in the back for smokers and picnic bench to sit on. It is a dive bar inside, but the number of drinks you get with $20 probably out weighs it. Also they have $2.50 PBRs!

There is nothing really super fantastic about this bar... But I go there all the time, never have any problems with anybody, customers and barkeeps are mellow people.

Although, if you are a smoker, this place is the best. Large patio where you can smoke and drink a pint or two, or three. Also there are TV's in the back. And if you look close enough in the patio, you will see two little lights that are either green or red and they tell you if the men's bathroom or the women's bathrooms are occupied or not.

Best place for beer drinkers and smokers. Otherwise, its just a typical local pub.

Awesome bartenders, great big screen tv's.  If your in downtown Sunnyvale its a must stop in watering hole. Friday usually has some good live music while you have a few.

I went to Murphy's last Friday night to see some bands play because they were doing a Toys for Tots drive and I wanted to check it out. When I walked in there was a band playing and right away you could tell they were good. I got myself a drink and sat down to listen and this band played for an hour and they just blew me away. I asked the bartender the name of the band and he said they were "Chronic Fuel". Everybody in the place was rockin out!!.. The staff there is really nice and there isnt much of a dance floor but everyone was still having a great time. I thought the place was neat and the other customers were really fun too. Nice place to kick back and have a good time. Also, if you get a chance to see the band Chronic Fuel, you wont be sorry..

THESE PEOPLE ARE LIARS.  If you're going to make a habit of lying to customers, not much else really matters.

I was there a few weeks ago.  They have a big banner on the wall advertising that the first and third Thursday of the month from 7:00 to 10:00pm, pints of Gordon Biersch are $4.00 and you get to keep the glass.  If you want refills, they are only $3.00.... soooooo...

I though I'd stop bye on the way home from work one Thursday and grab a pint.

Last Thursday, the first Thursday of the month, I stopped bye and was told that, "the Rep was out of town," so they could not have the even that week, but they would be having it the following week.

I stopped bye the following week, a.k.a. yesterday, and at 7:30, half an hour into the supposed event, the same guy told me the Rep wasn't there yet, so they could not start the event.  WHAT A CROCK!

With morals like these, I have little doubt about Sera C.'s story of the staff trying to steal her friends purse... or Ted K.'s about kegs sitting out at room temperature.

WHAT A BUNCH OF LIARS!!!  I'm not going back

Holy potstickers!  $24 for a pitcher of beer on St. Patty's Day?!  Alcohol is already overpriced as it is, but $24 for some fermented barley is madness.

I'm not a regular so I have no idea if that's the standard price or if they jacked prices up on St. Patty's Day.  Either way it's not cool.  $6 for a Jack & Coke, but it was served in a pretty tiny plastic cup (probably St. Patty's Day standard, but the cups could have been bigger).

Aside from that, the place is OK.  I don't think I'll be coming back though - will check out the other bars on the strip next time.

Local dive bar.  Casual atmosphere.  Down to earth bartender.  A small dance floor.

There was a live band playing last Monday night, whose music echoed through the street.  A few Sundays ago, a jukebox played some hip hop music.  It seems like a pretty versatile bar.

I haven't tried the food nor have experienced this spot on a weekend night, but it seems to be a pretty chill place to grab reasonably priced drinks.

that bartender, Iani, has been looking at me funny lately and the red wine tasted a little thick

My first thought, walking into this place, was "Great. Another Irish pub on Murphy Street." The bartender was attentive enough, but there was nothing to differentiate it from any other watering hole offering Guinness. Top 40 and party jams playing on the speakers, flat screens showing sports highlights...nothing wrong here, but pretty standard issue.

Then, I spotted a familiar, green & red labeled bottle on display. I took a closer look. Curiosity turned to disbelief. "No way", I uttered under my breath.

Yes way. They have Pliny the Elder, the gold standard of IPAs (if you ask me), bottled. That alone gives this place an extra star.

I was here about a month ago. There was a band playing awesome cover music for Zeppelin & etc. My friend & I were having a grand ole drunk time dancing, possibly annoying the seemingly sober people in there. And annoying the band asking if we could borrow their instruments to make our own music. Yeah, you read that right - we were that ridiculous and drunk.

As the bar started closing up, we all went out to share a cigarette outside. My friend realized she had left her purse inside, and I had left my jacket. Immediately I grab her, and we ask the bartender and everyone left working if they had seen either of them. He defensively said "if it was here, we wouldn't take it" & was strange about letting us look around for our items.

Well, about 10 minutes after we're hanging around outside again, a cop comes over and I tell him we can't leave until we find my friends purse. Desperate to clean the streets of us drunks, he goes in there and asks the bartender about our items and the cop comes back out with our purse/jacket!!!

I can't believe it! What a horrible, dishonest establishment. I will never step foot in here again!. The last thing anyone needs in a bar is to be taken advantage of - and by staff members of all people!

All my dramas were  taken care of because of this place...a friend of mine took me here today...my first time here....shared some appetizers and a nice cold beer...we talked and it was so nice to have someone who listens to what I'm going through...

I find this place soo cool...the bartender who has an Irish accent entertained us ..really cool lady...we discussed unusual food that she let us taste an Irish delicacy (blood sausage, I think that's what it's called).. Flat paneled tv all over the place...very clean establishment.

Will come back for a happy hour ;)

Murphy's Law is by far my favorite bar to go to in downtown Sunnyvale. By the 3 star rating, you can tell exactly what I think about downtown Sunnyvale.

You're not going to find trendy, hot, and young at Murphy's Law. This is a dive bar. But I like it.

They always have a live band on the weekends playing covers of oldies, you go in, grab a drink, and just enjoy the music.
Most of the time, you can get a smile or two in watching the older couples dance.

A great place to go if you are near dt sunnyvale and you just want a place to go to have a few drinks and chill.

I'm a BEER guy. Let's start with that.

I have NEVER... EVER... been to a place where the surplus beer kegs were stored in the corner of the bar. AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. JUST CHILLIN IN THE CORNER. OUTSIDE OF A FRIDGE. It was the first thing I noticed. Next thing I noticed was the poor CO2 levels blended into the beer. Everything was FLAT.

I don't like ripping businesses. I really don't. I grew up in a small Mom & Pop so I know what it's like. Which is why I won't tear shops up for one lousy server, or some other happenstance incident that isn't the norm. But I will harp on systematic problems that the business is just doing WRONG. Using the bar floor for extra keg storage = WRONG.

As soon as I saw those kegs on the floor I knew this place didn't care too much about maintaining their quality of beer. I know you're a dive bar, but beer is beer and it should be taken care of. It's your primary product for crying out loud.

Another thing that isn't necessary but would have been nice are heat lamps outside. They have a nice outdoor patio but it's FREEZING.

1 star for serving Hoegaarden on tap.
1 star for bomb diggity live music.

No more stars til the next time I end up here and see some changes.

Ok, make no mistake, Murphy's is a dive bar.   It is as simple as that.   They have cheap drinks ($3 beers and well drinks) during happy hour.   There is usually plenty of room to find a seat inside or outside if the day is nice.
It's pretty mellow there and a good place to just sit and grab a drink with some friends.
Will I be back?  Hell yeah!   I love dive bars and this is a good one.

About 3 minutes ago I updated my review for Fibbars and took away 1 star when I found them closed on a Saturday afternoon during football season.  I know .... crazy, right?

So, where did that 1 star go?  It's going right across the street to Murphy's Law!

Not only were they open on a Saturday afternoon during football season, they let me pick what TV I wanted to watch my game on (Roll Tide) AND they have a big screen out on their patio.

So enjoy your upgrade, Murphy's.  Today you earned it.

Murphy's Law (as I remember it): Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Well, that pretty much applies to going out on the town for drinks in dowtown Sunnyvale.

    Scruffy Murphy's: Strike one!

    Fibbar's MaGee's: Strike two!

    Murphy's Law: Strike three!

    I'm out!

Stopped in on Sunday to watch the games.  Cody makes a great cocktail.  If you like your bloody Mary's spicy, she's your gal.
Good crowd and they do bbq.  They have a open blues jam session on Monday's that I will have to go back to check out.

Cougar alert! Cougar alert! All you young men searching for your forty-something sugar mama.... Murphy's law is the place to be!

It was a Friday night and they had a house cover band that sounded EXCELLENT after: 2 $3 purple hooters, 3 shots of jeager, and 2 pints of Bass.

Unfortunately, I am going to have to cut this review short now that I've realized my drinking problem ....errr potential.

Let's just hope you don't see me on Facebook's "30 Reasons for a Girl to  call it a Night" anytime soon. Eek. Good times though!!

    Total dive bar, but great!

We ducked in here one Wednesday after watching a band perform during the Sunnyvale Summer Series Music thing. One of the friendly patrons told us to get our drinks from a "certain bartender" who's happy hour clock is a bit off :)  So we had a couple of beers at happy hour prices - an hour after happy hour.  Don't worry, we tipped him well.

Anyway, they had some awesome BBQ going on in the back.  Not a bad amount of food for $7-8 buck I put down.  Not sure if they do a lot of cooking and how often, but it was good.

So Murphy's is a dive bar - lets just admit it.
However there is nothing  necessarily wrong with that, you just have to know that's what it is.

All that said, I really love coming here for a few reasons:

    1. Happy Hour until 7pm Mon - Fri: this is pretty damn good considering most places end this at 6. It inlcudes everything on tap (even the good shit) and well drinks for $2. This means you can get a pitcher of Stella or Guinness for $8 - not too shabby!

    2. Everyone Gets Along - of course there are the occassional drunken fights, but with the wide age range here, it is actually very surprising how well everyone gets along and takes care of each other.

    3. Close to home - ok can't beat that! It's only like 1 1/2 miles to my house, so on those really drunken Fridays a cab ride is only $10 with tip!

    4. Patio - it's open all year, and even though there are no space heaters (bring your jacket!) its big and lets you get out of the sometimes noisy inside.

Overall, I love this place - it's my Cheers!!!

It's a dive.  I like dives.  Therefore, it is good.

There's a little bit of an older, yet diverse, crowd making it great for people watching.  Plus, they have pretty decent live cover bands which makes me happy seeing people doing what they love even if it's only for one night out of the week before falling back behind the desk on Monday.

I love the place, my husband plays there every now and then, the bartenders are friendly, I especially like Derrick, he makes the best lemon drops!  I usually only go to the pro-jams on Mondays, so I usually see the same people there on a regular basis.  We go to dinner near-by and then go to the jam.

3.5 for them! Fun dive bar. :-)

    Highlights:
    - Live bands: they are always fun and the dance floor gets a groovin.
    - Back patio: outside space to party is always nice, especially in good weather
    - Dollar bills on the ceiling: I haven't looked to see if they are still there but remember them stuck up there first time I went here
    - Tables: some places to sit if you're lucky to snag a spot

Lowlights (my flip side to highlights):
    - Not so clean, but hey, it's a dive bar

Another place I turn to when I feel like a divey bar.

I have only been here once with my friends. One of our friends is a singer for this group The Mo-Fos. So, one night they played here and we all went to see their performance. I had such a blast! My god! Their drinks are amazing...I had a great "Sex on the Beach" here...plus a couple of great margueritas and an apple martini...Just a great place to be when with friends. It is kind of small, but it's cozy and you are not going to get bored there...While I was at the table watching my friends...6 people asked me out to dance...So people are friendly and they just want to have fun and see everyone around them having fun as well. I will definitely go back!

This place is a dive, but its a fun dive with lots of local character! I wouldn't eat here, its for drinking, hanging out and observing the local wildlife. I get the feeling that Murphy's used to be quite a popular spot, and with the decline of downtown Sunnyvale, things have changed over the past few years.

There is still one very good reason to go to here. On Monday evenings there is a "Pro Music Jam". Think of it as open mic night for semi-pro and pro blues musicians. It starts at 8pm or so and ends when everyone is too tired to continue.

One of these Monday evenings, find a restaurant on Murphy Ave, eat some dinner and walk around, and finally make your way over to the bar. Keep a seat warm, buy a few drinks and enjoy some of the best unstructured, live, musical chairs, blues you have heard in awhile.

The place fills up fast with local residents and musicians, and the music is excellent! Three stars for this evening alone. Its not easy to find a local music scene.

I've gone here on 3 occassions, all with co-workers.  Twice around dinnertime, and once during lunchtime.

I don't think it's as bad as other reviewers make it out to be.  It's not the best bar that I've been to, nor is it the worse at all.  Onto their drinks and food...

Drinks: I had Guiness here recently, and it felt thin...Not as foamy and creamy as I thought it could be.

Food: I had vegetable curry ($7.95).  Given it was food at a pub, I had low expectations.  That must have helped, because the curry was at least moistened and mixed with the vegetables.

Service: It was fine when I went for lunch recently.  My co-workers and I got our food and drinks promptly.

This place is just downright freaky. I like dive bars, just not the ones in Sunnyvale I guess. The regulars are straight out of a David Lynch movie. Had dinner next door at Taverna's since it was too hot to cook and thought I'd get a pint afterwards. They've got Guinness and a big screen tv but I don't like the feeling that i might be in a fight at any given moment.
