THREE STRIKES!!! AND YOU'RE OUT
When have you ever Had to PAY To get into an Establishment so that you could eat ?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I can honestly say that I do enjoy the spoken word portion.. even their Jazz groups but Honestly, it's ridiculous that you have to PAY to listen to music while you dine.. I have never been to an Establishment such as this. I was born in KC,MO and the REAL Negro League looks NOTHING like this. It's the Real Deal!
I used to actually frequent this place quite often back in 2005. They had great music on Friday nights (old school hip hop/r&b/house music), The $5 Martini special on Wednesdays, great mature crowd, fairly priced drinks and the food was okay (bbq wings/ mac & cheese).
At some point (circa mid-2006) things started to change a bit. The dingy t-shirt/gym shoe hoodlum/thug crowd started coming in, the bartenders started forgetting drinks, they started charging a cover and the service was just getting worse.
I stopped in again in early 08 and things had not changed. The place has continued it's decline and its a shame because the place originally had promise. Hopefully this place will become the talk of Bronzeville again. I give it 3 stars because of the original memories I had with this place. I guess shit happens!
Unfortunately, this is not a great option although it started out as a great concept.
First, 43rd street still looks like Beirut. There has never been a time that I've been here that I did not feel afraid leaving my car. Second, the food is pretty consistently awful (as is the service).
The one upside that it had going for it was when DJ Torin was spinning there on Thursday nights. I did enjoy the music because I am a "househead."
Outside of that, I really could not recommend it. I'm a native South Sider and I love to see the revitalization of our neighborhoods with new establishments, but this one leaves a lot to be desired.
I'm giving it two stars instead of one because I don't want to totally trash a South side spot, but I agree with most what the previous people said, yeah it can be bad. I would actually say it's a good spot for maybe a group to just chill out and talk without much emphasis on the food or service, don't worry about the wait staff interrupting engaged conversation!
Review Source:All in all, the most disappointing experience ever. Â I came on a friend's reccommendation, but the service was mediocre (the waitress sure knows how to apologize for everything but couldn't give us utensils), the food was non-existent (we waited 75 mins and only got a complimentary plate of wings without napkins for waiting so long), and the atmosphere was out of control (granted there was a party at the same time, but they could've closed off the section instead of placing us in the middle of it). Â We paid only for the drinks and left for Rosscoe's Chicken & Waffles down the street...which made up for it all.
Review Source:Wack! Wackness! Wackful! Wacktasicital!
I wanted so badly for this place to be more than it is. Several visits and the same story. Poor service. A half hour for a chicken philly is a shame, a damn shame. The drinks were horrible every time, like how can you mess up a screwdriver, they did. I'm all about supporting black businesses that's why I went 4 times before I said never again. The concept was an amazing idea but they didn't deliver at all.
Negro League Cafe with no paraphernalia, no pictures of real players. I hope that it gets some new management. That's too nice of a space to waste.
Went to this place expecting to see a wonderful, historical collection...not so much. Â Expected the menu to be "sports bar-ish", but did not expect the service to be so poor. Â The food to be soooooo bland. Â What a disappointment! Â When will people learn? Â To have a successful restaurant, you need a few basic things:
a. Â Chef that can cook!! Â
b. Â Servers who SERVE!!
c. Â REAL serving utensils!? Â I can use plastic at my nephew's dorm room!!
So I went to this place last night and it was almost empty. I was with a group and they had all been there before and said that it was nice. It took a while to get started up but it actually turned out not to be half bad. They have a small menu, things like 5 different kinds of wings, burger selections, salads, and about 3 or 4 desserts (also some sandwiches too). They had a seperate drin menu with wines and then all different kinds of drinks, from shots of tequila, to daquiries and martinis.
I ended upi having wings and fries, and on a scale of 1-10 I would give them a 7, the food was fresh, that was one of the best things about the meal. At about 11:00 or so, the spoken word starts and the host was hilarious.....JuneJune was his name and I swear dude is about 90 pounds maybe...but his presence was strong and he was a great host. There were very good spoken word artist also, some singing, as well and there is a live band. Most of the artists that were there had their CD on sale.
There was free Budweiser from 10-11Pm , I think they were there doing a special promotion. The manager from Jokes N Notes was there (i have a review on them also) giving away free tickets in a raffle.
All in all, I had a pretty interesting night. The food was pretty good, some of the entertainment I could have done without. I would go back.
