My brother told me to take my time arriving at his house so I took the hint and we stopped for a sit down lunch on the drive upstate. The waitress was so nice and it reminded me that while people in NYC aren't outright mean (usually), they aren't generally this type of nice. Â It was refreshing and warming. Â
I was starving by the time we stopped because I had skipped breakfast so I ordered a spinach omelet with toast and homefries and gobbled down the whole thing. Â When the waitress asked if I was done when there were just a few bites left on the plate I practically shouted no and she just said good for you! Haha.
I also drank buckets of coffee during our meal there and it was great coffee. Â I will keep this spot in mind on a future trip upstate. Â But also, there are so many diners in this one town! What's up with that?
Three things that cause me to rate neptune only 3 stars: 1) I found the french onion soup disappointingly bland (after getting all fired up for it based on others' reviews), Â 2) salad bar is very small and fairly unimaginative and 3) blueberry pie, while tasty, was served icebox cold - not warm as i really prefer (and kind of expect) a la mode pie to be. Â
Despite those three disappointments, service was prompt, attentive, and friendly which somewhat makes up for the just acceptable - but not exceptional - diner food.
Since I'm a pizza & burger kind of guy I naturally ordered a burger deluxe. Â The decor inside is pleasant and the employees are superb! Â I frequent the diner but always order the cheese burger deluxe, never venturing on to something different. Â The burger is average, probably frozen but doesn't taste like a frozen burger. Â The fries are shaped like wedges and are very good, fried perfectly.
Though I haven't sampled a lot of the food other than the burger the service is very good and the place clean. Â If you've been to some of the places I've unsuspectingly went to you'll know why cleanliness is important. Â :o)
Having recently returned to the Neptune, I realize I was not quite fair with my previous impression of it. When we had been there last, it was really busy and frenetic. This time it was quiet, we love going at off hours to places, and the service was perfect. They are really super nice there.
Not being that hungry we opted for a hot cuppa and a shared dessert. I seem to post lots of pictures of dessert cases but rarely if ever partake. So today I decided to do so just f/b/o my interested yelp friends. They certainly did not steer me wrong!
We shared a slice, a rather generous slice, of Bavarian Chocolate Cream Cheese Cake. It. Was. Amazing. All their desserts are made on the premises by a full-time pastry chef. I only intended to take a bite. Well look at my photos for what happened. Now I need to run up and down the stairs a bit. Well worth it.
We were so pleased that we might even try them for dinner one night, really unheard of by me but I think they might do a great job!

HaPpY VaLeNtInE'S DaY to my fave yelpers-you know who you are!
Love the French onion soup! Â The salad bar has a medium-sized selection, but is always fresh, with yummy salad dressings to choose from. Â My sister goes for the fried foods appetizer - always a crowd pleaser. Â Fast & friendly service. Â The only thing that would give it 5 stars is better chocolate chip cookies!!! Â The chips are only on the top of the cookie, not baked inside.
