Really like this place.  No food so they allow dogs.  Even saw one in there on Saturday night late.

About a dozen beers on tap and a good variety.  I'm pretty biased against water-beer so very satisfied with a couple browns and IPAs.

Live music is always good. We go there every couple months since we live 'uptown' Hoboken, but staff is incredibly friendly. bloody mary's are as good as they get. They add an extra few treats to it. My boyfriend loves the 'pics' in the bathroom ;) Pool table is awesome. GREAT time always.

This town needs an ENEMA!  Seriously it does. Hoboken has its pizza, baseball more pizza. Northern Soul is a great addition to the environment. Rumor has it this town has the most bars per capita in its one square mile than anywhere in the US.  .

Oh Snap! Is that Basquiat and Warhol painting on the walls?  The Art here is rotating, and different styles and mediums.  I am always a fan of business that promote upcoming artist. Randomly on Mondays is when the art openings happen here.

There is open mics on Wednesday's, Thursdays local bands. Friday/Saturday is when this place shines with rock, old school, hip hop, reggae, and 80s. I love it especially since it's in my neighborhood.  The place is much bigger than one would expect, pool tables hug the back. The front sits the eclectic mix of bartenders that are super friendly and ready to get you inebriated.

Just come to this bar and chill out dance have a good time. Let's face it NS is 100% fresh and unique soul to the bar scene in the 'Boken

Best Bloody Mary in town.. hands down! Either Ben or Alyssa make a great one. Chill, laid back place. Good music & low lighting make for an almost surreal ambiance. One pool table & some darts. Couple group seating areas. No food but you can bring in take out, or even have food delivered. Also, PET FRIENDLY - so grab the pup & head on over for a few.

Love this bar!  come here from time to time just to get a real beer/bar atmosphere.  Great jukebox, pool table, and darts, not to mention the BEST bloody mary in town! Recently held a surprise party for my man here and Marc & the bartenders were awesome!  Set up a table for me to put out my spread and the 3-hour open bar for $35 a person was great!  My friends/family and most importantly the birthday dude had a blast!  Thanks guys, Northern Soul is the best :)

The only bar in Hoboken bold enough to hire some hipster schlub to spin LCD Soundsystem, MGMT, Crystal Castles and the like...

What's going on here?  Where's the lazy, Top 40 pandering I'm used to?

There's art on the walls, vintage arcade machines in the back and some random movie playing on a pull-down screen..

A collage of classic Playboy pics spruce up the men's room, while an ever-changing lineup of local microbrews keep it all interesting.
Vintage light bulbs over the bar and a half-decent open-mic night..  Finally, a new spot in Hoboken gets it right.

Favorite bar in Hoboken.  Darts, good music, live bands, great beer selection.  The brothers that own the place (I think they own it) are awesome.  They make you feel like family.

Chill neighborhood bar. Decent play to start the night out.  Has dart board and pool table.  We got there pretty early and watched the crowd build. Actually developed into a pretty attractive group of people who are trying to avoid the downtown fist pumpers which I appreciated. Will definitely be back if I am in the area.

Stopped in here after my wife begged me to go to Carlos's Bakery. Bakery was not anything special as far as daily pastries but she was happy. I was happy to be in an Irish Pub. Northern Soul is a great locals bar for any tourists who want to get the pulse of Hoboken. Solid drinks and cheerful staff, shot pool in the back and enjoyed visiting with locals and tourists alike. You can hear some amazing stories about the the underpinnings of new york ttalking to the cat next to you, but buy them a pint first as this helps break the ice, especially if you are visiting. A real hidden gem. Did not see the live music but the day crew is excellent. i heard the owners were opening one in manhattan but it wasn't open when I was there.

Soul and the City of Hoboken cannot possibly go hand in hand no how no way!  Long known as a safe haven for frat and sorority post grads that are generally resistant to any cultural enlightenment LOL there's is a place that breathes some fresh air into a town not known for a variety of venue options.  Sure the town has plenty places to booze and peruse, but let's be honest they mostly offer the same overall options.

It was a Saturday night, I was off to a late start looking for some options and someone mentioned Northern Soul, so we gave it a try.  Here's what I found a good beer selection, personable bartenders, a good DJ who actually was playing some real beats not the typical Saturday DBag line up, which kept me head nodding throughout the evening, local art being supported and a decent crowd (mind you it's not the city or BK, but for this town it's as good as it gets).  I recommend this locale if you want to chill, catch a few and listen to some golden era beats

Ben and Donal are great!  My boyfriend Matt & I come to this spot weekly, usually multiple times.  So much so that when we walk in, before we even hit the bar our drinks are poured.  This place has great live music during the week and a killer dj on the weekends. The crowd is not the regular Hoboken juice head crowd which can be a huge relief.  Good prices, great beer variety and they always have wine for me!

    WE LOVE NO SOUL!

    :D

    See you soon guys!

"The worst bar music I have ever heard"

In other words, it wasn't overplayed Z100 or redundant classic rock.

    No "Don't stop believing?:

Tom Petty has other songs besides American Girl?

    No Rihanna??!!??!

I've noticed that people who listen to top 40 or mainstream music tend to be the most narrow minded in the world.  There are 8000 bars in Boken that play the same 35 songs.

The reviewer-Usually H-complained the bartender knew every word.  It's called expand your horizons love.  I'm sure a year from now after the song you never heard of gets played to death on 92.3  you'll be loving it.

Hoboken needs more places like Northern Soul.

An awesome bar in Hoboken that is far enough removed from the craziness of Washington Street that you get to enjoy a relaxed vibe with normal people.  There's a pool table and dart board in the back.  An awesome selection of beers (on tap and bottles/cans) including some 21st Amendment beers that are mostly $5 from what I can tell.

The bloody marys on Sunday are fantastic and the bartenders are awesome.  This is a great neighborhood bar.  So please, if you're only visiting Hoboken, especially on a Friday/Saturday night, stay on/near Washington Street and let the locals continue to enjoy this bar.

I find it hard to believe that this place has only 29 reviews right now. I guess people just haven't discovered it's charms yet.

As is mentioned in the other reviews, the crowd and the vibe is very chill and neighborhoody. It doesn't feel like a "scene," like the main bar district of Hoboken felt like. It's slightly hipster, but mostly just comfortable... keep in mind this is coming from a person who is comfortable living in a Minneapolis neighborhood that is about 95% populated by hipsters.

There's a good beer selection, a pool table, darts, a photo hunt screen that was broken, some lounge seating, live music sometimes, dogs wandering around... it's fun.

I like it here.  a lot.
    it's not lame here.

    here's why I believe that it's cool:
    - the entire vibe and mission here, from ownership all the way thru to the barback, is that the regulars - the loyal customers - are who really matter.  everything is second to that fact.  everything.
    - that being said, the bartenders are great peeps.  not because they pour heavy or whatever, but they are just genuinely good people.  Antonio (barback) always makes sure the place is clean and neat, organized, and safe from drunken broken glass on the floor.  and we, as customers, are always well treated.
    - there is live music that Dave Entwistle has made sure to keep at a quality level.  his years of Hoboken experience bring good musicians to the stage and his Open Mic Wednesdays are always filled with the interesting animals of Hoboky.
    - pool board/dart table...no...pool table/dart board!
    - there is great art all over the place!  it brings life to the brick walls engulfing the place.

Its a pretty simple, down to earth bar with a nice beer selection, decent pool table,  friendly staff and no out of townees or bad music.

This place reminds me of some of the other local hangouts that are pretty low key.  I'd call it a local dive bar, though it's a little bigger than you might initially expect.  They've got dos equis on tap which I could crush all night and the music is either jukebox or dj driven depending on the night.  This is a place you go to if you're looking to grab a drink and relax or to meet some friends.  Its got a cozy atmosphere and they're big on pool (When I went there was a long list of players waiting and it looks like they do some tournament play).  You get the feel that most of the patrons are regulars.  I'll probably hit it again on a weeknight or before heading to a final destination.

This place is quickly becoming my go to bar.  It's conveniently located across the street from me.  They have a great beer selection for $5.  The bartenders and patrons are all very chill.  The place is really cool inside with a pool table, dart board, and jukebox.  They seem to have music acts even on weeknights.  This is a great place if you want to avoid the frat boy scene down near Washington Street.

    Update:
Added an additional star because the patrons and bartenders have always been friendly.  Just be aware that it seems like most of the people in the bar are locals.

Just went here for the first time recently... and I'm glad I did. Not fratty at all (rare for Hoboken), this place is the best kept secret in town. Great juke box, capcom video game, pool table, darts, and art you can buy off the walls. Bartenders are very friendly. Looking forward to checking out some music here soon.

Not your typical Hoboken bar. No lines!  They have pool, darts, and enough room to play them comfortably. Good happy hour specials, a humble but smartly rotated selection of beers on tap. Often see dog's drinking out of water bowls while their human friends drink their pints (something I've always appreciated of a neighborhood bar). Display local artists regularly, and though I don't go in here often, about once a month, there is always new art on the exposed brick walls. Great place to go if your looking for a drink, but not looking for the crowds you run into on Washington St.

I, like many others it seems, would prefer that word not get out about Northern Soul, as it's a great, lesser-known neighborhood spot. But, I guess I'm getting the word out with this complimentary review. Oops. Quite the dilemma.

Overall, this is a chill bar off the beaten path in the residential section of Hoboken. I've never waited in a line outside the door and I've never had trouble finding a seat or a stool. But by no means is it deserted, either. It's a civilized crowd -- none of the stereotypical Jersey types that roam around near the PATH station in the summer. There's a decent beer selection with reasonable prices and there's always good music that doesn't stifle conversation.

But please don't come here and start making it popular, okay?

My favorite bar in Hoboken by a long shot sports a good selection of beers and a casual atmosphere. Most importantly, they play good music (sometimes live acoustic-type stuff). Northern Soul is one of the few bars in town that doesn't feel compelled to blast dancey, clubish music at an unbearable volume.

A great bar if you're lookin for a low key night.  It's small but never really gets crowded.  There is usually live acoustic music going on.  This place is great on a nice warm summer night.

I've never had a bad time at this place. It is very relaxed, the people are friendly, the bar tenders do a good job of staying on top of everything. The music is awesome, I've never heard a single song I didn't enjoy. If you're out to impress, venture elsewhere. If you're a decent human being who wants to just hangout for a night, well, by all means, go!

What a great pub.  I found the place while waiting for a haircut next door at Mad One Jacks.  Now I try to get there early so I can stop by for a pint or two. Great ambiance and friendly and helpful bartenders.  The patrons seems to exude the same friendly persona as the bartenders. They have a pool table and few dart boards, and a bunch of TV's. No food here, just a proper place to get a pint and get your drink on.

Shhhhhhhh don't tell to many people about Northern Soul or else .....

I'm glad someone (sara) didn't like it cause I was starting to think that the layed back attitude was attracting yuppies.

Go eat your pizza else where. This here is a spot for drinking and shooting some pool.

I've been to this place a couple of times and it's good if you want to have a chill uneventful night. But that's what I needed when I went. Pool is free before 7 on some nights I believe. The music is kind of random and the crowd is your average joes and janes having a little fun and relieving stress. Seems to be a place with a lot of regulars. The bartenders are nice too. Overall a good spot to chill

Northern Soul is an unexpected gem of Hoboken.  If you are looking to avoid the over-dressed pretentious scene, this is your place.  It's relaxed, comfy and affordable.  The pool table is a plus.

I read the other reviews....haters.   I love this place.  Pool is usually free before 7 and the bartenders are nice.  It's a local place, so if you're looking for a hookup, this might not be your place.  However if you're looking for a local place that's comfy - this is an awesome place.

    A. I liked it as The Quiet Woman; I like it as Northern Soul
    B. Add any synonym for relaxed, chill, sedate, cool
    C. Beers were pretty affordable
    D. Patrons reflect the vibe 'B.'
    E. Not a hook-up spot
    F. Chicks with heels and glittery stuff are pretty rare
    G. Safe spot to hang when saturday night rolls around and the metrosexual bars are piling up with muscles marinara and his 50 look-a-likes (don't get me wrong, I'm cock-diesel but I do wear longsleeves, ha)

    I will hit again.

Nestled in the back of Hoboken away from the chaos of Washington Street, Northern Soul attracts more of a local crowd more than the "Let's party in Hoboken tonight and spend daddy's money" suburban girls.  The music is at a perfect volume to allow you to hang out and converse with people.   Great for shooting darts, playing pool, or catching the game.

While the service is oftentimes questionable, Northern Soul (formerly The Quiet Woman) offers a more relaxed, laid-back atmosphere which is surprisingly rare in Hoboken. I'm really not a fan of  the "Jersey Shore" style bars, which line Washington St. This is a break from the norm and certainly preferable, if you can overlook the lackadaisical, aloof staff.

Cool vibe when I went the other night.  Good art on the walls, excellent live music, pool table available.

I took major issue with the bitchy bartender.  Apparently the female bartenders at this spot hate female patrons.  Each time I went to the bar to order a drink I had to wait about 5-10 minutes for the bartender, who preoccupied herself doing things like chatting with her friends and shuffling through music.  The delay was in no way because she was busy doing her job.

Also I drank draught beer all night and wound up inexplicably sick the next day.  Coming from a girl who can hold her liquor, 5 Stellas should not prevent me from keeping any food down the next day.  The glasses were smudgy and I'll bet their beer hoses and nozzles were festering with germs and bacteria.  Yuck.

I agree with Tony .. this is the perfect "chill" spot in town.

Filled with cheap drinks, great juke box, almost always open pool table and an adorable dog it is perfect for a night out.

I enjoy sitting by the large windows and people watching .. sadly due to Hoboken rules the windows get closed around 10. But it's still a great place.

    Nothing pretentious here!

Local, no frills neighborhood bar with cheap drinks, friendly staff and a few tvs. Never a long wait for a spot on the pool table or dart board. Happy hour beer specials and sometimes a bar keep will make you a special drink if you want to be surprised. Haven't done it yet but on a slow night you might be able to bring in your well behaved dog.
