My family went to O Lavrador for my birthday and loved the place. Â I think it was our first time in a Portuguese restaurant. Â
The food, service and atmosphere were excellent.  The only caveat is that we had a <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FRestaurant.com&s=0aab4cbd731f3d3b0d1453050d3abc56a8c80bd214e25469c7555b750dca8a51" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Restaurant.com</a> gift certficatate and could not order the $20 price fix specials and had to order a la carte.
My wife and I shared one of the seafood paellas, while my son and his girl friend each had a grilled steak with ham and egg.  We all started with grilled calamari appetizers. Â
A pitcher of peach sangria was shared by all of us.
We are certain to go back.  We have to try the $12 lunch specials.  Of course, we can't use the <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> certificates.
This is a stylish and genuine Portuguese restaurant, with a great selection of iberian and latino dishes and drinks. Â The staff was charming, kind and helpful, with special mentions going to Ms Chica and Messrs. Caesar and Raimundo. Â It's close to JFK and a great place to spend a delightful last evening before flying on.
Review Source:A great gem of a restaurant! Very cozy atmosphere with a small fireplace in front. If it weren't for my parents, who have been dying to come here, I would have never heard about this place. I took my parents out as a treat and we all had a great experience. The staff was friendly and attentive, service was quick and efficient. Great food, huge portions, and tasty sangria! We ordered a variety of appetizers which included fried calamari, bacalhau croquettes (wish they were bigger!) and meat croquettes. As an entree I had the fried bacalhau with mashed potatoes. This was a whole piece of cod! So much food I had to take half of it home. I was definitely pleased and will be back for more. Plus they have the bar area attached at the back of the restaurant. I am sure this is a great place to catch some soccer games!
Review Source:This review is for the bar area, but I am sure the restaurant side is great as well.
Chalkboard specials are awesome. Â Skirt steak, pork steak, fish cakes, seafood, everything. Â Portugese beers are reasonable and sangria is fantastic. Â Bar has ample TV's and Wi Fi. Â Friendly bar / wait staff and really good espresso. Â
Look forward to trying lots of menu items.
A jem in Jamaica for sure...
This review is long overdue.  O'Lavrador's food, especially their Paelha Marinheira has consistently been outstanding over the years.  Their food is authentic, the atmosphere is friendly and their presence is much appreciated in the neighborhood  The calamari, clams, shrimp in garlic sauce, chicken, sangria and desserts are mouth watering.  Can't wait to go back!
Review Source:This place totally reminded me of a few weeks I spent on business in Lisbon. Especially the more traditional/not fancy restaurants. Granted its american but they try to do things that feel like Portugal.
Started with some well priced($30ish) Spanish Cabernet from Extremedura-Yay! Delicious. Forgot the name.
With the wine we had half a home made grilled Chorizo Sausage-total hit. Chunky flavorful, cooked table side. Yum. I think server used Aguardiente for the fuel.
Piri Piri Shrimp were next and they were perfectly cooked though the Piri-Piri was a little under-seasoned. I'd still order it again.
More wine-Name started with a V & it had a black label in cursive from Alentejo region. I think it may have been Granja-Amareleja. It was delicious as well. Also reasonably priced.
Next was the Bacalhau Salad-it was huge and so well flavored. They had clearly worked the dried cod into the right place for a salad. It was tender and filled with onion and bell peppers. Normally I hate bell peppers but this just worked.
Lastly we had something a bit off the reservation: Lagosta com Camarao e Vieras em Molho Champagne. A lobster with shrimps and scallops. Delightful, just delightful. Creamy sauce perfectly cooked scallops and shrimp. Pop without mush or rawness. I thought it was a generous portion as well.
Lastly home made Aguardiente. totally tasty and fun. Not for the faint at heart. Sort of like Ouzo or Grappa.

I'd go back if I am ever in that area. I really had a great time and the servers were super. All around great experience.
As a first generation Portuguese American, I can vouch for its authenticity. This food is as close to my moms home cooking as I can find in New York City. There was one review stating that the food was salty. Yeah, Portuguese food tends to be salty. Did you have bacalhau? It's salt cured cod, so there ya go.
Friendly, professional service that makes you feel like a regular, even if its your first trip there.
Expensive? The portions are MASSIVE. It's almost a double serving.
Go to the bar section, its more laid back and they have specials that are not served in the dining room. Also, they have 75cent cod fish cakes which are fantastic
I love this place.
This is my absolute favorite place. Â We skip the (very) formal dining room and opt for the bar area. Â The dining room, however is very nice for a date or family dinner or special occasion. Â Since we eat here several times a week, we're more comfortable in the relaxed bar area. Â Plus, the bar has it's own menu with items that are not on the dining room menu. Â The staff is exceptionally professional and the service is impeccable. Â The food is awesome. Â Never had a bad meal here. Â It's defnitely worth a try.
Review Source:Jill M's review of O'Lavrador is infinitely better than mine. It's more informative, it's better written, and it's funnier. So please, by all means, if you really want to know about O'Lavrador bypass my review and move right on to hers. I won't be offended. She is after all the Queen of Yelpville. But my review does have something that Miss M's doesn't, that little blue ribbon.
SUCKER!
Picture it:
Jamaica, Queens.
2009
Poor girl from the Bronx brings her Mom and cousins from Israel to meet her fiance's Italian and Irish relatives at a Portuguese restaurant.
The picky Mom who once shot Uzis in the Army actually liked the calamari. You know it must be good. She said the salmon was dry though. I heard the steaks were done right. The seafood was delicious in it's green sauce.
Then there's the special chorizo. Some thought it was salty but the future bride thought it was DEEELICIOUS.
The service was EXCELLENT! They pleased this UN Summit meeting so you know they done right.
I will be back O Lavrador!
