Have been coming here for years! Great music and food Friday and Saturday nights. My standard order is the french dip with onion rings. Probably the best onion rings in Richmond! Portions are generous. Wait staff is attentive and fun. This is my go to place for weekend fun or a quick weeknight dinner with friends.
Review Source:I've never been a huge fan of O'Tooles, but it would always do in a pinch because there aren't many competing bars in the area. And even though the food wasn't anything special or even interesting, it wasn't offensive. Just standard bar fare, slightly on the divey side of an O'Charleys.
Well, I don't know if the coming of Galley to the Southside has sent them on the skids, but O'tooles is certainly skidding in a downward spiral. I met friends here for a drink after work this week, and the place was empty for happy hour. Plus, I saw...brace yourselves .. roaches! Honest-to-God roaches, and it scarred me deeply. Â For some people it's spiders, or maybe snakes, but my ultimate undoing are little brown roaches. On the wall. possibly dancing. Maybe they were on a date.
Anyway, I think the manager needs to call an exterminator (sorry, roach-lovebirds, for exposing your rendezvous point).
O'Toole's is one of those restaurant that I have pretty much overlooked on a regular basis. I live somewhat nearby and am always driving past but until recently never thought to stop in. I have to agree with other reviewers who have pointed out that having Guinness on the appetizer list was a nice introduction to O'Toole's. It seems like a pretty standard bar - vast menu of typical American and Irish pub fare, dark interior, lots of beers on tap. My husband ordered the fish sub and I ordered the Reuben. Everything we ordered was good - nothing really to complain about or write home about. I'm glad we finally tried O'Toole's and feel I have a local bar to visit now when the craving for a few pints and some standard pub fare hits.
Review Source:Maybe their plain old bar food is better, but the brunch was pretty bad. Â The french toast was dry and flavorless and the hashbrowns were not at all what one thinks of as hashbrowns. Â They were lukewarm, flavorless homefries. Â I was really surprised at how bad my meal was given all the positive reviews. Â I barely ate any of it, and left hungry. Â I will not be returning.
Review Source:This is a pretty solid restaurant. Perhaps it has too wide a menu but if you read any other reviews you'll also see why I gave it 4 stars. I agree w/ the following:
Great burgers! Some think the best, they are certainly good!
Onion rings, these are about as good as you can get!
Terrific wings, excellent!
I like the French Dip sandwich, think its great! I also like their Shepard Pie.
Cheese Steak.....yum! Â It gets 4 stars.
Half-price hamburger Tuesdays. Â Really, I could leave it at that, but I won't. Â We go to O'Toole's on Tuesdays specifically for their burgers. Â They're huge and delicious. Â I'm working my way through the entire burger menu, but so far the "O" burger is my favorite. Â
Really, give them a try, you won't be disappointed.
I've lived right around the corner for sometime now but I finally got around to going here last night. Went to catch the yanks game around 8, pretty decent crowd. Seems to be a lot of locals/regulars. Ordered a Guinness and a basket of onion rings, which were the best onions rings I've ever had in the city of Richmond.
Bartenders were friendly and efficient, the facilities were very clean, the beer was cold and the food was great. However, only giving them 4 stars because I waited almost 15 minutes just for some onion rings.
Went to O'Tooles tonight and all I can say is the place is average. It used to be wonderful years ago.
Hubby ordered the reuben with a side of onion rings. I ordered the Greek salad. Figured this was a safe bet.
First, the Greek salad had about a dozen pepperoncini and a zillion sliced generic black olives (the tasteless kind). So after removing said ingredients, the Greek salad looked mighty thin. I also discovered a lettuce stem which is inedible. Even the feta was meh.
On to the sandwich...the reuben comes on regular toasted bread, not the classic rye bread. Consequently, the soft bread quickly became mushy with the sauerkraut and russian dressing. And there was very little corned beef. All in all a disappointing sandwich. And the onion rings...they came out cold. The waitress quickly brought out another order and they were just lukewarm. By that point, I was just ready to eat and get the heck out of there.
While our waitress was nice, she reeked of cigarettes.
Will I be back? Nah!
I like being able to order well-prepared veggies!  With my Fish & Chips, I asked to skip the chips and the waitress didn't bat an eye - was as gracious as could be.  I ordered the pickled beets and the yummy mashed sweet potato (was that cinnamon in there?).  The broccoli is fresh, crisp and  bright green as it should be.  The fish was fried and was delicious, so that was my concession to slightly not-as-healthy,  but hey, it had omega oils, right?  Generous wine servings too!
Review Source:I'm so happy to have O'Toole's near my neighborhood. It is a classic and they make the very best onion rings. I rarely order anything but a burger because they are so well prepared & delicious. Don't expect fancy food, look for very good quality basics. (And I hear the vegetarian pizza is fantastic.)
Review Source:A few months ago, I chimed in on a Yelp "Talk" conversation about the best cheeseburgers in Richmond and suggested that O'Toole's had a good burger. Â Since then, I've eaten at many of the other places suggested in that conversation. I was back at O'Toole's tonight and can now, unequivocally, state that I think O'Toole's makes the best burger in Richmond! Â Perfectly grilled (I asked for medium and it came out medium; a rarity for restaurants!), nice bun, good toppings, quality beef. Â Every bite was deliciously juicy and perfect! By the way, I ordered the "O Burger" and recommend you do too. Â I also paid the extra $1 to upgrade from fries to onion rings...a good decision as they were crispy and delicious. The dipping sauce was a little weak in my opinion so I went for my fallback of ketchup. Â After working on the house all weekend, eating this great burger and drinking a cold beer in a frosty glass was exactly what I needed!
Besides the burgers, this is a great place! Every time I've been, whether for brunch, lunch, or dinner, I've been fully satisfied. They are a friendly bunch in a cool atmosphere.
O'Toole's is a good neighborhood restaurant/bar in the Forest Hill section of the Southside. They have been around forever as have some of their patrons. The atmosphere has changed (literally) since the smoking ban, but it has made it much easier to enjoy a meal there. The food is nothing fancy but decent quality shows in most of their dishes. Food wise, I prefer their breakfast over dinner but really like that I can get a Harps draft with my burger. Overall a good neighborhood place to enjoy decent food, good drinks, and being Irish.
Review Source:Went here tonight for dinner because of a Groupon. Â Service was good, and the food was quick. Â Pretty decent sized portions as well. Â I had the blackened Grouper which was mediocre at best. Â The Ms. had a chicken sandwich that was also very average. Â Heard that they have a decent beer selection but we didn't do any drinking during our visit. Â Also heard that they've been around for 40+ years so they must be doing something right. Â Pretty comprehensive menu, and the restaurant was decently busy, but we had no problem being seated immediately without a reservation. Â The ambiance was pretty cool and it definitely has the pub feel to it. Â
If you're looking for decent food, pretty decent sized portions with quick and efficient service then this is definitely the place. Â If you are however looking to wow your taste buds, this is not the place. Â Also, don't be worried about limited parking upon arrival as they rent out a church parking lot behind the establishment.
A pretty standard bar/pub style menu, but doesn't limit itself to comfort foods. Â The "O" Burger is still my favorite; salads are sizeable; specials are creative. Â Did you know that you can get either a small OR large Greek salad? Â Not on the menu, but order a small and top it with grilled chicken or tuna and you've got a great meal on the cheap! Â Start with my favorite appetizer: a Guinness. Â No kidding... it's on the menu!
Review Source:This is a classic neighborhood place. Â We don't veer too far off the tried-and-true menu items like sandwiches, blue-plate style entrees and good pub food items. Â It's gotten much more crowded since they went non-smoking, and we certainly go more often. Â We appreciate the beer selection and the new expanded bar. Â I'd love to see a really good happy hour special, that would bring me in more often. Â
The service is always good and the food is consistent and relatively speedy. Â Favorite menu items: Â The burgers, pork chop special, shoestring fries, Legend Brown on tap, and the crispy chicken salad. Â (We once had really bad steaks that we sent back twice, but we just don't order steaks there anymore---it's the only time we've ever sent food back there.)
Okay, I still love the Greek salad and today I tried the cheese steak. Â Their sandwiches are better than their steaks, so maybe that's where their strong talent lies.
My boss had the French onion soup and loved the extra anchovies on her salad.
We had the same server that helped me last week and she was very nice (as usual).
