What can I say? Their food isn't going to win any awards, but this place is very cheap, is in a prime location close to my work, and is the perfect hangover cure. The staff is very friendly too. I do recommend calling in your order, ahead of time if you are ordering carry out. You won't want to wait there, especially, if you are having a rough morning.
Review Source:I always avoided this place as it is a typical greasy spoon type place. Â Hot Dogs, Burgers, Gyros... ya know, the usual.
But being that I am on a low carb diet, I decided to stop in and try there breakfast. Â I walked over from my office and walked in. Â There were a couple other customers that just ordered waiting for food they just ordered. Â I approach the register thinking, "I need a Denver Omelet.." Â I ordered, and when asked what kind of toast I wanted, I passed on that and the potatoes as well. Â
Now I know a restaurant isnt required to do so, but most places I have gone to give you SOME sort of discount when you arent taking toast and potatoes. Â I mean, I am saving them money, yet they still charge me for the items that I wont eat. Â I feel like next time this happens, I should just retract my statement and order it, and drop it off with some person on the street that could use the food..
There's an idea... Â At least someone can enjoy it..
Traditional Chicago beef/hot dog joint. I'd say take a non-Chicagoer here for a beef and some fries. The veggie burger is really good in a bad way. There has to be good hang-over food for non-meat eaters too ya know!? The fries are greasy and crisp and the veggie burger comes on a butter bun with choice of cheese and all the typical toppings. They are fast and there is seating inside and out. Just try to talk to your lunch companion as the trains go by over your heads!
Review Source:2 blocks from work that has BLT!! Â The meal comes with an overly generous portion of fries and a medium size drink - only for an additional $2.50. They accept all credit cards ( who uses cash anymore? ) and have no minimum - they shouldn't since they're smack dab in in the middle of offices. They just started a rewards program where if you spent $6 they sign the back of a card. Â The lady at counter didn't tell me about it, I just saw a small sign on top of her register. Lady - this is why customers come back, speak up and be proud of it! Â I have to go there 9 more times to complete my 10th trip.
Review Source:Love this place! Â I usually get the rib eye steak sandwich. Â It's tasty, the bun is toasted, add tomato, lettuce, grilled onions and steak sauce and YUMMY eating! Â And the fries are what takes their sandwiches over the top! Â Old School crinkle fries - add your own ketchup or bbq sauce! Â
Because as everyone has already said, it is a greasy food joint (which endears me to it), I can't go there more than once or twice a week. Â But each time I go, I've enjoyed my meal - sometimes over two days (split the sandwich, split the fries and it's lunch the next day!).
Yes, its small, but I've found on more than one occasion that when these quaint places move into larger spaces, they lose what gives them their uniqueness. Â I don't have a problem with the size of the restaurant. - nor their food. Â It is what it is - and it does it well!
This the best lunch spot in the city!!!
I eat here at least 4 times a week. Â The breakfast portions are huge.
The lunch portions are also huge. Â I have yet to finish the fries that come with the combo meals.
Based on food quantity, price and general niceness of the owner, I would give this place 6 STARS.
I just ate away my hangover thanks to this place.
For what it is, this place does it well. Greasy, non-chain fast food. Lots of food for cheap by loop standards. Most everything is cooked on the flat top and the fries are those classic fat crinkle cut fries that are crispy on the outside and fluffly on the inside.
This place is greasy.
If ever in need of greasy breakfast or greasy lunch, this place will WD-40 your esophagus all the down your digestive tract. Is that a bad thing? It's all a matter of time, space, preference, and whether you'd want to do such a thing. Â I've gone here several times for breakfast and for lunch. I would say the burger handles itself well and extra brownie points for letting you put whatever topping you feel like on it. One note about the burger: iz greazy fo' sheezy.
If you are starvin' like a Marvin' for bfast, you'll find solace in toast served up with packets of jam or butter, eggs, hash browns, and of course generous heapings of bacon. The price will never offend your wallet but if you're walking back to work with a bag that's already revealing the contents of your lunch, you might bring yourself a raised eyebrow here and there.
First off I always feel welcome at this establishment. Most of the food is pretty deace. There breakfast menu is tasty and cheap too. I recommend the eggs with hashbrown, bacon, toast, and a chunk of steamed watermelon. The hashbrowns are actual potatos and opposed to the string stuff. The lunch menu is the standard greasy spoon fare, burgers, hot dogs, gyros, and sweet potato fries which rule. The kabobs are pretty gross. Anyway, this place is a goooood caaaalllll. p.s. it wouldnt kill the cooks to wear gloves every now and then.
Review Source:Remember when I said I wished there were more stand-alone fast lunch places in the Loop? I forgot there are! At the other side of the Loop, Off The Tracks Grill is pretty much superior to Gold Coast Dogs in every regard. In fact I almost don't want to write this review because the more people find out about OTT, the harder it will be to make it to this hidden gem.
I ordered their two-hot dog meal (comes with fries and a coke). They give you twice as many fries as Gold Coast for the same meal, charge you a dollar fifty less, and let you add your own toppings! This is perfect because let's be honest, there is no ONE way to make a Chicago Style Hot Dog. (I like mine heavy on the onions and peppers, and less so on the mustard.)
Despite its location at the juncture of about 6 different El lines, the restaurant is remarkably non-deafening enough to have a conversation. In warm weather, there's 8 seats outside that are likely considerably louder as the Els rumble overhead.
The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because it is SMALL. It's one thing to be cozy, but another to be crowded. I counted 30 seats AND a grill kitchen AND counter in a space about the size of an El car. I was lucky enough to get there before the lunch rush, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that "to go" may be the best answer you can give when placing your order.
I'm also not sure if this can really be held against it, but as far as the Loop goes, it's kind of in a dead spot. There really isn't a lot around there, which means it's a walk for just about everyone downtown, and if you only get 30 minutes for lunch, it could be a photo finish if there's a line.
Great prices and generous portions, which is hard to find in the Loop. A friend and I stopped in for lunch here last week. The gyro came with a big portion of meat - too big to fold even - which is great. The flavor was all there and they even threw a piece of watermelon on as a side.
Review Source:I had the Chicken Sandwich with Cheddar Cheese and Fries last week. It was about $7. The portions were HUGE. My sandwich was large and I would say there were 2 large handfuls of fries on my plate. Â It was a little loud for conversation, but it was cheap and I was STUFFED after I left.
Review Source:As I stated in my last review of this place I had not tried their breakfast, but that has since changed.
A few weeks ago I ran over as I got off of the BlueLine and ordered their pancakes which were huge, fluffy and tasty.
I went over this past Thurday morining and ordered an egg white omelet with ham and cheese and it comes along with a side of hash browns and toast. The omelet was enormous! Very good and it was so fulfilling I did not need to have lunch, seriously! $7.00 well spent
As I waited on my order I saw two gentlemen sit down to a delicious looking plate of French toast...that will be my next meal there. Great place to stop in for breakfast and lunch!
Price-Combos are cheapest in the city.
Food-Good. Burgers, chicken, hot dogs, turkey melt, etc. Fries on the side. What makes this place 4 stars (almost 5) is the condiment bar. They give you the burger/hot dog with nothing on it. Then you head over to the condiment bar and make it rain with onions, relish, pickles, tomatoes, and other toppings. They also offer BBQ AND buffalo sauce.
Atmosphere-Small, but well decorated.
The condiment bar and value make this a great loop lunch.
Had the Veggie Burger combo (Fries & Soda) today. Â It was $6. Â The veggie burger was very good. Â Yes the bun being buttered and the mayo helped, but I still thought that it was quite good. Â They give you a lot of fries and to be honest, I can't finish all of them. Â They have a condiment stand so you can dress your dog, burger, or sandwich any way you like.
The service was great. Â They were very nice.
Despite me taking my food to go, I think this place will be a bi-weekly visit. Â i can't wait to try the other items.
Now if only they had a nice TV or two.
Off the Tracks comes in handy on the days I crave grease. Â Specifically, a basic grilled cheese and fries (with pop) the combo is less than $5. Â A co-worker turned me on to this place. Â She's a big fan of their turkey burger and french toast. Â Â It's a small, no-frills lunch spot. Â It's quick and cooked to order. Â The fries are a particular fave of mine---classic, crispy, crinkle-cut fries. Â The kind that make the brown paper bag greasy. Â If you are going for fries, don't go half-ass.
It's hidden under the L on Wells---hence the name. Â It's just off the tracks. Â Stop by.
so its been almost four months, figure my 90 day review is late.
Greatest has once again returned. The system is still intact and every thing is running smoothly. Well accept for the not hand carving the Gyro meat. I guess I will forgive that one faux pau. But only them.
Go there and be sure to order the Reuben. The cole slaw/thousand island mix is awesome.
Be sure to ask for white cheeze on your Italian beef otherwise it yellow. BOO and for shame!
I didn't realize how much I would miss the RC cola though.
Breakfast still is the best around.
Hot dog and a bag of fries for $3.75. Not bad.
The hot dog is pretty thin, so I'd recommend getting more than one if you're hungry. I think they had a special like 2 dogs, pop and fries for $6, but I didn't want all that.
I went in before noon and it took less than 2 minutes for me to order, pay, put the condiments on my dog and leave. As I was walking out, though, there were a few people already getting in line.
Overall, it was clean and quick and cheap and easy (twss). So, it's OK by me. Not anything to rave about, though.
Off the tracks grill was a great find to get away from the various chain/franchise restaurants in the loop. Â
I always order the italian beef, which is big and delicious as well as fries. Â The fries are those crinkle fries- super hot , fresh and plentiful. Â It is right under the ell so I would not imagine it would be lovely to enjoy a romantic dinner but for fast food take out it hits the spot. Â You also can get cans of pop which are much easier to carry with you than a cup spilling over as you try to run from psycho cab drivers trying to run you down.
THE place to go for 2 hotdogs, fries and a coke. It's got a menu full of greasy, fast food, but I always get the same thing 'cause it's so good (and it's only $5)! The place is kinda far from where I work, but the walk is worth it. The hot dogs are salty and you can load them up with your choice of toppings. The fries are mmmmm ... crisp and perfect. It's a fairly clean establishment, too -- that's always a good thing.
Review Source:Off the tracks --located literally along the el track, is the only greasy spoon I go to. In these economically trying times, it comes in handy to be able to get a lunch in the loop for under five dollars. It's the place to go when you're broke as joe's turkey or if you've just got a hankerin' for simple American fare that's cheap but still tastes good. I typically get the chardog combo that comes with a fry, 2 chardogs and a drink for only $4.35!
There's a condiments bar where you can put your own stuff on. As a transplant to Chicago, it used to get on my nerves when I'd go to other hotdog joints. After asking someone to put ketchup on my hotdog they sometimes either forgot or I'd have to listen to why I shouldn't have it on there. They have the best fries too; golden deep-fried yumminess that are crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. Â The burgers are pretty good, as well as the bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich; made just as if I cooked it myself.
In a nutshell, it's clean, I've never had a jacked up order, the service is always fast and friendly--even from the cashier. The only drawback is that it's a cash only establishment, so they don't take debit card.
The gyros here are very good, tsaiki sauce isn't runny like I have had at other greasy spons.  And they are big enough to share or save 1/2 for dinner.  Yes, you have to dress your own food, but it's not that big of a pain and you can control how much of the stuff goes on it. The crinkle fries have helped me get over lots of  hangovers. Thank you my little potato pals.
Review Source:So, I'm not usually one to go nuts for a greasy spoon, but this one touched my heart! Â Came here with coworkers one day in search of some quick, cheap food.
Service is friendly (got some recommendations from the very friend;y cashier) and fast...I decided to go with the gyros...with fries and a drink, it set me back about $7.25, which is typical of any lunch in the loop (well, fast lunch). Â
Holy Apollo, I have to tell ya, the gyros were awesome! Â I got a basket piled so HIGH with gyros meat, tomatoes and onion, I couldn't even see the pita underneath! Â In fact, by the time I got to the pita, I was stuffed. Â I couldn't even eat my fries, which is very odd for me. Â Plenty of food for sure.
The one bad thing was that I came out smelling like a griddle. Â I had to go to court smelling all lunchy...I recommend getting it to go unless you want to attract a specific kind of person (a hungry one???).
After seeing this place on the way to work every morning, I decided to check it out today for lunch. $5.75 got me 2 Vienna beef hot dogs, a soda, and a big handful of crinkle fries.
They don't dress your dogs, every freaking ketchup bottle is sputtering empty and I'm pretty sure the fries were at one time of the frozen variety, but hey; this place is a no-frills, in-and-out kinda joint. You go in, order, get your stuff and condiments and you sit down or leave. It's a fine choice for a simple and relatively cheap lunch.
This place looks a bit shady. But -- Â it's cheap-ish.
Big burger with grilled onions, ketchup, mustard, cheese, tomatos, and a pickle on the side. Yum.
Fries cooked to perfection. Drool.
Diet Rite on tap. Who serves Diet Rite on tap? Honestly! Me loves it.
There wasn't any room to sit down because the minimal sitting space was already filled. Booooo!
I was more than satisfied with my meal, though. Yum-o!
My male co-workers used to RAVE about this place all the time, so one day, my female co-worker and I decided that we would check out what all the hype was about! Â When we got there, there was a huge line out the door, so we had high expections. Â All we wanted was a hot dog and fries...and we were expecting that all the toppings would be actually PUT on the hot dog. Â However, we basically assumed the wrong thing since the staff directed us to the 'condiment table'. Â Half the toppings were missing, though. Â I think the only things left were mustard, ketchup, and SOME relish. Â We were definitely not impressed. Â However, the food IS pretty cheap and I heard that the burgers are pretty big, so I can understand why the men like this place so much. ;)
