It's tex-mex, and a chain... However, the guacamole-live is what makes me smile and want to come back time an time again.  It's made in front of you and you can hose how much of each ingredient you want.  Really quite amazing.  Everything else is average tex mex, but not bad.

I used to love going to on the border but my experience last night was one that will make me think twice maybe even three times before ever going back.  First of all i'd like to say the service was GREAT. The waiter was very attentive, kind, quick and accurate.  However it was the food that will not be sending me back. I ordered a taco salad and my company ordered a burrito. I sent the salad back after the meat was cold and looked very questionable as to what kind of meat it actually was and the burrito was also very unsatisfactory, meat was hard chewy and unflavored.

    Again Service was a 9/10
    Food -6/10

I'm actually a fan of On the Border!  We go there frequently.  Although, my biggest complaint is that they never follow up with you if you get a kids meal about your child's dessert.  I think we've gotten it like 4 or 5 times and never has the wait staff remembered to include our child's dessert or offer it.  Disappointing, but I don't remember to ask for it either, I suppose.

Food is flavorful.  Salsa is spicy (I like it that way).  Dip trio is great!
Sometimes service is lackluster, which is understandable when they are busy, but often they are not.

They do offer outdoor seating, which is nice.

Best place for vegetarian Mexican food in Indy that I've found so far.  They have a separate menu you should ask for (I keep a photo of it on my phone so we don't have to bother) I hadn't had a chimichanga in years, but they make a vegetable one (don't get it if you don't want something probably fried in the same grease as everything else).  Our favorite meal is to get share two vegetable soft tacos with black beans and cilantro lime rice.  That with salsa (really good) and chips is plenty of food.  Also good is getting the guacamole they prepare at your table.  We have eaten here the most of any place since we moved to Indy.

Great chain!  They do a mean street taco plate.  But honestly I think the hubby goes for the chips.

Meh, the food here is fairly good and the experience predictable. Things go a bit slow and our waitress was a bit off on my last visit. They do cheese about as well as any chain-style TexMex place, and the servings are filling.

Fairly decent food and only middling service. Their chips and salsa are the best part of the whole meal. Our server seemed pretty scattered even though it was a non-busy lunch hour. The food was filling but by far not the best Mexican (or even fake Mexican) food I've had. I wish we would have driven a little further down the road to take advantage of other restaurants in the area!

Love this place- keep in mind, nothing authentic/Mexican here-- it's like, an actually-good tasting Taco Bell with full service. But the huge portions and tasty menu rock. Love the 'ritas. The dessert is great too... they have this one with flour and essentially snickers deep fried served with caramel and ice cream.. so flame.

In terms of mexican restaurants, it straddles the line between a more mexican chili's and mexican't.

I reluctantly went back for a second time on a lunch break with work folks. The time was ok, just not very delicious. The main problem I have with it is being vegetarian. There is pretty much nothing vegetarian there. The few things you can make vegetarian, you have to special order and you have to ask a ton of questions to make sure what you end up getting actually is vegetarian. The first time I went, the server right away realized I was vegetarian and told me things like the enchilada sauce has ground beef in it.

My most recent visit, I had forgotten and the server didn't mention it. So when I got the food, it had meat in the sauce. I realized this about 1/2 way through my meal. Those of you thinking I'm a terrible vegetarian for not realizing, you're wrong. The ground beef was finely ground, like cous cous, and the sauce over powered the flavor of the meat. it wasn't until i really looked at the sauce that I noticed.

Bottom line is, the food isn't all that special and as a vegetarian, it's border line work to make sure you get food you can eat.

I agree with everyone else : "NOTHING SPECIAL"... Another Mexican chain restaurant in town. It serves similar food to Don Pablo's. I would say the quality of the food is about the same ...not great... I was not impressed. The interior is nice and bright. It's like a combination of Don Pablo's and Cheeseburger Paradise - feels like eating at a Mexican Restaurant on the beach...got it? Kids' meal -...meh... Service is "2 star". The waitress was not able to clear our table quick enough to make room for our food. The plates that they used to serve food (appetizers and main meal) are so big. In summary, I have to keep looking for a better Mexican restaurant, especially the ones who serve the best Chimichanga.... :-))

Ate at On the Border for the very first time today, because of a business lunch meeting.  Had the Chimichanga lunch special $8. Nothing special. With so many authentic mom and pop Mexican restaurants available in Indy, On the Border will not be on my list for future visits, unless my business colleagues demand it.

I agree with Nichole M. , nothing super special here. Mike (sorry, can't keep calling him my "better half" like he's some sort of of inanimate object) thought it was a bit too "Chi-Chi's-esque" and his dish wasn't all that great according to him. However, we both agreed that the salsa was tasty and my own entree was quite yummy. I had the Pico Shrimp Tacos from the Border Smart menu. The shrimp were large and cooked just right. The accompaniments of black beans and grilled zucchini, yellow squash and red peppers hit the mark for a healthy meal that didn't leave me feeling guilty or deprived.

I would go back for the dish I had here or perhaps when our extended family wants to do Mexican. Other than that, I think Mike and I simply agree that we prefer the smaller, non-chain Mexican eateries around town - they're cheaper and tend to be more about the food and less about the decor and such.

In the Castleton Square Mall parking lot...

On the Border isn't anything spectacular as far as Mexican food goes, but it's pretty fun.  We had amazing service while we were there (although our waiter was a little TOO interested that we'd just moved to Indy).

The queso is yummy - and they offer white and yellow.  Cool!  I think I had the combo plate with a bunch of stuff, and Aaron had the Chicken Chipotle fajitas.  I really love the fajita nachos too!

Definitely check it out if you like run of the mill Mexican.  It's a little spendy, IMO... Mexican food should be cheap cheap!
