If you come here for the drinks and madness fine! Having a conversation at your table requires your voice to go up several decibals to be audible. Â The service is excellent and attentive. The food is another story!! Ordered the French onion soup, which had gooey bread and globs of half melted cheese. extremely sweet. The fish and chips? The fish was undercooked and batter lacking crispness. The Blue Moon beers were delicious, the place was packed, typical Friday night at the pub!
Review Source:I came here a year ago, got the salmon salad and hated it because it was way too salty. This year, I had a decidedly better experience. I got a delicious Fisherman's pie which is basically a seafood and fish Shepard's pie with a mashed potato crust. Â My dining mates got the following:
Mild wings, still too spicy.
California wrap with shrimp and bacon is good.
Shepard's pie - "makes me homesick for mom."
Guinness pie is good, bonus points for flaky crust.
The service was decent but nothing to write home about. At some point we got a basket of their delicious raisin biscuits with half as many biscuits as people in our party.
I wish they had more authentically Irish or even British, heck I'd settle for Western/Northern European food. Instead most of the menu is filler like various wraps, mac and cheese and other entirely American junk.
Must say, even though the current location is spacious and well laid out, I miss the old O'Neill's. It just reminds me of my early 20s (and ok, sneaking in well before that). The 'new' venue is set apart from the flow of SoNo and represents a kind of sloppy, cover band jammin', freshly minted 21 year old scene.
However, the food is decent from what I recall, and the brews are fine as well. I wouldn't go hear during peak weekend times (I'm becoming less and less of a party animal) but it's an a-ok spot overall.
I'm sure it's fun at other times; but if your friends talk you into coming to O'Neill's on a weekend, make sure you're NOT the designated driver, 'cause it's really only fun when you're drunk. Â As in: wasted, sloppy, blacked-out, sing-along-with-the-crappy-cover-band drunk. Â Drunk enough to be immune to claustrophobia. Â Drunk enough not to care about the conversations you just can't have here (or can only have by screaming into your buddy's ear.)
Review Source:I've been a regular at O'Neill's for years so I'm perhaps a bit biased. However for my money, it's by far the best Pub or Bar in the lower Fairfield area.
Their tap beers are always fresh, no hint of dirty lines or skunked beer like too many other places in the area. If you're a Guinness fan, this is definitely the place for you. And you get an honest to god imperial pint - no replica mini Guinness glasses here.
The bartenders, the owner, and the staff in general are all very friendly and competent. You'll rarely be left with an empty glass for any amount of time, especially at the bar.
I've eaten just about everything on the menu and while it's all good, there's nothing I particularly crave. That said, The beef and guinness stew, the chicken curry, and the shepherd's pie are all solid.
My only real complaint about O'Neill's is that it gets pretty loud and crowded later at night. Especially if there's a band playing. It's not a big deal as we just make sure we get out of there by 8 before the party crew turns up in force. If that's your scene, it's great of course. They do a good job of morphing from family restaurant during the day, to happy hour pub, to live music party late at night.
spent many a formative year here, excellent staff, beer selection, and draft guinness and smithwicks.
they get good bands, Fake-ID for one, on the weekends and karaoke once a week was always a good time.
i remember when some of the bartenders here were the barbacks and bussers, and now they are running the place, that's awesome.
superbowl deal has has always been fair and st. patricks day is insane.
people say there's an oneill's everywhere you go, those people have not been to this oneill's.
I don't know why it's taken me so long to write this review, I really don't.
I can't say enough about O'Neill's. Â I've been patronizing this fine establishment for years. Â If I ever go missing and I haven't been kidnapped, I'll probably be here. Â
The staff is extremely attentive, friendly, and willing to accommodate. Â The selection of draught beers has nearly doubled since they've moved to their new location, which is nice. Â The bar is well stocked and the supplies are seemingly limitless.
O'Neill's food is very good. Â I really enjoy their shepherd's pie, the burgers are pretty dang good. Â Sunday brunch is also a great departure.
Truth be told, while I do like the new O'Neill's location, I really miss their old location. Â It was a lot smaller, more quaint, more homey. Â Well, the past is the past, I guess, time to move on.
My only complaint is really a nod to the business that they run. Â That is that on the weekend, it gets ridiculously busy. Â This business has made a great effort to bring in great bands with a huge draw. Â On second thought, I can't really be complaining about this too hard since I'll be at O'Neill's regardless of the crowd size.
PS: Come for St. Patrick's Day... it's a boatload of fun.
A friend heard I was traveling to CT, and suggested I check this place out. Can't thank him enough. Reminded me of my own "corner bar" back home, and I like a bar where the staff is friendly, and chatty, but not at the risk of overdoing it. I maaaay have stayed a little later than I intended, and had an extra beer or two more than I had planned, but it was a nice "home away from home" for a night. I'm sure I'll be back in CT soon enough, and I'll be back at O'Neills.
Review Source:I REALLY wanted to like the new O'Neill's, but after several visits, they have just lost me more and more each time. Â The OLD O'Neill's was great... a traditional Irish Pub. Â I was a regular. Â The NEW O'Neill's is more like an Epcot version of an Irish Pub... very artificial. Â It's lost it's authenticity and character.
Like others have said, the food is OK at best, even for pub grub. Â It also seems to attract more of the "club" crowd now than it did at it's old location. Â
They really lost me on St. Pat's. Â They were our 5th bar in SoNo, and even though you have to walk several blocks off the main strip to hit this spot on the crawl, they were the only one charging a cover. Â My group turned around and went back to Donovan's, where the beers were cheaper too.
Your typical nicer, newer pub. I can't give it 4 stars because these places are a dime a dozen.
The bar service on Saturday night was really good, and they've got a decent selection of beers on tap.
The band was blah, but glad to see that they put on local talent. Â Also they didn't charge at the door, which I think is pretty cool.
If I lived in the area I wouldn't mind frequenting this place.
O'Neils is a popular bar and not a bad place to hangout at on a weekend night with a band. Â
The only reason to eat here is either at lunch or in desperation when everything else is absolutely, positively closed (or you can't get in due to crowds) in SoNo. Â Basic bar food, nothing special. Â After 5-6 beers the burgers aren't horrible, but avoid everything else on the menu.
The "Tipperary Blue and Gold" is the best damn burger I have ever eaten in my entire life! Â I have yet to try anything else on their menu because once I find my "favorite", it's hard to stray from it. Â But, as far as the burger goes, I'd challenge anyone to find a better one out there. Â I lived in Texas for three years (needless to say, I've tried a LOT of burgers) and I can't say I have come even close to finding a burger this good. Â The Portuguese roll is absolutely heavenly, soft and doughy on the inside and with just the right amount of crunch and give on the outside. Â The bacon is plentiful and perfectly crisped, never blackened and never soggy. Â And the fries, well, they may just be the only disappointment in the sense that there's just never enough of the double dipped goodness! Â And for $7.95 ($8.95 at dinner) it's a steal. Â Wash it all down with a pint of Boddington's and you will certainly achieve burger nirvana.
