I went with two of my girlfriends to Orchid last weekend to have a girls night out. We had been there and to Luna many times before. We were seated by a waitress at a table that was not originally ours because they gave my friends table away. No problem. The waitress asked us to wait ten minutes to see if anyone came to claim the other table at 9:55. When no one did, she told us to sit there. We were approached by a belligerent man at 11:00 telling us we had a lot of nerve to take his table and he told us we had to move.
I went and told the assistant manager that we were having issues with a man and I thought he was going to cause trouble and he said he was aware of the problem. I refused to move and told the other patron to get the manager. He instead came back with two very large African American bouncers who told us we had to move. I again refused and told them to get the manager. I was shoved out of my seat by the bouncer. The bouncer kept shoving me to the point where I had to call attention to the people around me and yell help because the bouncer would not stop shoving me. He spilled my drink on me and assaulted me.
I approached the manager, which was probably just a shift manager about this, she apologized, said she wished the bouncer would have come and got her, and told us she could get us another table. It wasn't about the table. It was about the abuse of power that your bouncers felt they could enact on someone unprovoked. This club is responsible for hiring bullies that have no right to touch a woman inappropriately and shove her around. The manager would not give me the name of the bouncer because she claimed she didn't know it.
I went and filed a police report regarding this because I don't feel that anyone has a right to assault another person. The management is responsible for this and they won't return my calls. I'm hoping the police are able to get in touch with them.
I have told all of my friends not to go there and many of them live in the Ferndale and surrounding areas and use to go to this bar. I am appalled at the response of the management from Orchid. This is a terrible establishment and I know my friends and I will not be spending our hard earned money here ever again.
I was there on a Saturday night. Â The music trended towards hip hop that I did not recognize (probably poppish/thuggish stuff that I do not normally listen to), although the crowd did not reflect this. Â Getting drinks was no sweat - whether at the bar outside or by the dance floor. Â There were more women than men, but there was really not much dancing. Â I am not sure I understood this.
Review Source:Friday night my friend choose Orchid for a place to dance that wasn't in Royal Oak. Orchid had no cover and $2 u-call-it's until 11pm so our group of about 10 late 20 to early 30 year old's went to check it out.
We got in right away and lots of people were there taking advantage of the $2 drinks. The bartenders were all very nice and they had Two-Hearted Ale in bottles! Yay!
The music was great! A mix of top 40 and 90s hits, plus some other random jams that were super fun to dance to. Videos played on about 30 TVs around the bar adding to the atmosphere.
So this all sounds pretty good if you are looking for a fun dance night out and don't want to deal with huge crowds, right? Now, about that crowd.... it is by far the most random combination of people I've ever seen. I'm not really even sure how to describe it, but it was awesome. Lots of great people to watch and no one judging anybody. Everyone was just there to have a good time.
Let me start out by saying that I really WANT to love this place. In fact I USED to love this place. I wrote a story about it for Ferndale Friends and sung its praises. This place was pretty much the epitome of where I wanted to go on Saturday nights.
Then it changed. A lot. So much that I really regret writing an article about how great this place is.
Saturday nights used to feature a very eclectic crowd and fantastic live music. The bands they invited were all top quality cover bands (and even a good quality band doing original music once) that played a range of music as diverse as the crowd. They never took themselves too seriously, but they were seriously talented.
Recently it's been generic late 90s hiphop song after song. Not stuff that really invites dancing, and the music videos, well let's say they're not exactly light-hearted.
One night, many songs were punctuated by the DJ announcing a different bachelorette party, which lead to the collective squeals of penis-hat  and glittery-sash wearing women.  There were three in the space of one hour by the time I left. I don't want to rail against bachelorette parties, and while they might be having fun, being part of their spectacle of the absurd really isn't very fun for me.
To make it worse, I've commented on their Facebook page multiple times trying to ask about the lack of live music. My questions have been met with deletion.
If Orchid continues on its current course, good for them, but I won't be attending. I only wish I could retract my earlier rave review.
My girlfriends and I wanted to go dancing last Friday. Being of a certain age (over 22), we weren't sure where to go. We decided on Orchid, because there was no cover, and they had $2 anything-you-want-to-drink. (hello, Gray Goose and tonic for $2!) We enjoyed several delicious cocktails. The bar was really crowded - everyone was taking advantage of the drink specials.
After 11, the crowd thinned out a bit, and the dance floor filled up. They played an odd mix of music; mostly European techno and top 40 remixes. There was a nice mix of people there - all ages and ethnicities. Â
We ended up closing out the club, the sure sign of a good time. I'll be back.
I will jump right into it. Â The bartenders are not trained well. Â Ordered three of the same drink at the same time and each drink had a different amount of vodka poured into the glass. I watched another bartender almost fill a glass for another customer full of vodka. Â The bottles and glasses were everywhere. Â no one seemed to be picking up the bottles including the ones laying on the stage. Â Slow response by staff when glass gets broken on the ground near you as well. Â The worst thing were the drinks. Â Seeing more booze on the bar then in my drink. Â Also the slow response to the bartenders to fill drinks. Â I spent over 30 mins waiting for a drink. If you are going to this bar predrink and have your dd take you to the club for the music. Â It is not worth the slow service and mess of empties on the floor. Â Management did not seem to care either considering they never lifted a finger to help speed drinks up or remove empties from the floor. Â Once again a bar that could have lines around the corner has failed ...
Review Source:Pretty sad place in terms of service right from the door to the bar. From what their website says, its free entry before 11pm on Fridays. The bouncer still takes the usual entry fee from my friend and I though we get there at 10:30! He is insistent and so we pay.
At the bar, its far worse. Its a long table and the bartenders only go to 3 'spots' at this table. So I join the queue at a certain 'spot' and when my turn arrives, the bartender has already moved to a different 'spot'. Another customer notices this and asks her to serve me first. I probably lost 15 minutes of my time already (no kidding) and then give the bartender a dressing down for sorry service.
And guess what.. no apology! Never recommending this place to any one.
It's been quite some time since this "30 something" has been to a dance club. I wasn't sure what to expect but my friend was raving about this place so I was pretty excited (pause) until we walked in the door and saw the crowd. Â It felt like we were at a high school dance for the the first hour and a half. Â Everyone was crowded around the dance floor but nobody was buzzed enough to dance. Â The music was definitely not the problem, the clientele at this place was. Â The guys looked like they had just graduated from high school last weekend. It was really bad. Â If it wasn't for the 2 dollar drinks, we probably would have left sooner. Â The later it got, the worse it was. Â
My friend did say that she went on a Saturday last time so maybe there is a drastic difference in the crowds on Friday vs. Saturday. Â Let's hope so.
Safety dance
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
Cause your friends don't dance
And if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
The short and sweet, cheap drinks, Smoking hot staff, very fun environment. This place is a funhouse. Thursdays and Saturdays they have live music mixed with a DJ who just loops top 40, while Fridays are just top 40. This would be so much better if it had real dj's or even themed nights (i.e goth, house, dub-step, etc.). It is what it is just drink it up and Dance.
I went to the Orchid with a group of my girlfriends to go out dancing. We did not spend a lot of time at the Orchid but it was a very nice place to dance. It was fairly roomy and the night we went they had some great music playing. Some friends of mine have gone a number of times so I would definitely go again.
Review Source:I have only been here  a few times on Saturdays, but Its always fun. Sat its 2$ you call it from 9-11pm. So drinking ciroc on the rocks splash of water , for 2$ is not bad! the club alternates a DJ and the house Band, then eventually its jest the DJ. the music is your top 40 remixed and the place is covered in tvs with music videos. I like it here better than LUNAS (same owner)  i feel like the crowd is Older (by older i mean not only 21 year olds) and very mixed (ages, styles, vibe, everything) . It is ferndale anyway!  We had our friends 30th bday here and it was a blast dancing the night away. We reserved a table for free and got a bottle of champagne for free too for bringing the group, the night was great.
I used to go to the Q, Monkey Bar, and  a few times to The 9, but they all kind of fizzled and was never busy enough,,, but i am happy that the interior has changed a bit, it is more intimate with the stage taking up some room. the bar and bath rooms are in the same spot, there is still coat check and a 5$ entrance fee, but if drinks are 2$, i dont mind the fee...  Get to know a cocktail server and then you will never have to wait in line at the bar either....
Its the kind of place you go out to dinner first and then spend the night here, no need to change bars.. Â
lookin forward to more dancin
