POW!!!!
Stop # 3 on my Chicago Pizza tour 2013.
I came here after getting my weiner stomped over at Giordanos (never got my pizza). I sat at the bar since the place was now dead (since I wasted so much time at that other shithole). Bar tender wasn't amused at anything. Ever. WTF brah?! You miss your workout today? Either way.....
I ordered up a small pie and some beers. Bartender was nice enough to let me sample before committing. Pie took about 45 minutes like he said it would. I had enough beers in that time to make sure that any pizza they sat down would taste amazing.
Good news!!! Â No matter how much beer I had, that pie was dang good!!! Â I really enjoyed the crust, best of my pizza tour. Sauce was good, but maybe a little light. Cheese was thick, but not as tasty as Lou Malnati's.
Really enjoyed the space here. All the writing on the walls, the openness of it, the upstairs bathroom... (records scratching).... Â WHAT??? Â Whatchutalkinbout Willis? Â Yeah, the crapper is up stairs. After I pounded 9 beers waiting for my pizza you think I can get up those stairs to the nearest urinal? Aint nobody got time for that!!! So I pee'd in the corner booth. jk.......
I'll be back!!!!
We wanted to be "Wow'd" but we were not wow'd. Â
This was our first Chicago Pizza experience, and we had been looking forward to it. Â Got there around 11 am and were seated immediately, but by the time we left around 12:45-1pm, they had very long lines down the sidewalk waiting for seating so call ahead if you can.
Love the decor, black walls with multicolored writing everywhere! Â On walls, statues, paintings....it is insane how cool this place looks. Â Love the ambience. Â However, the service was.......lets just say, they are used to running through hoards of tourists and are not there to give you a "dining experience". Â It was fine, not super friendly, not rude. Â It does take a while when you order a deep dish pizza so be prepared.
When the pizza arrived, a medium deep dish sausage pizza is SO different from any pizza I had ever eaten. Â The very thick crust is very cornmealish. Â That would be my guess, corn meal in the crust. Â It is very very heavy, and after one piece of a medium pizza each, we were done. Â Stuffed. Â The other odd thing, is the sausage. Â I have seen slices of sausage, crumbles of sausage, balls of sausage, but this pizza was topped with a LID of sausage. Â No kidding, a flat disc of sausage like a top over the pizza sauce and cheese. Â Different!
We had them pack the leftovers in a box and thought we would give it to the guy we saw on the corner with a homeless sign. Â BIG mistake. Â Homeless persons are not interested in hot fresh pizza in a box, that may have been your lunch tomorrow. Â Â If we had been going home I would have eaten it later......I didn't realize it was insulting? Â Â Cash is less insulting I suppose. Â So is walking by and pretending you don't see them, if you ask me. Â We only packed it because we were thinking of him. Â Won't make that mistake again!
All around good experience.
Now, the pizza is not the best pizza in Chicago and like other reviews...the cheese is a little weird...kind of rubbery. Â Also, they were not too generous on the pepperoni and green olive toppings. Â But, I still enjoyed the pizza and the atmosphere and overall experience.
We also ordered the Calamari and it was fantastic - perfectly cooked! Â Also, some good beers on the list. Â I really enjoyed the "Two Brothers Pale Ale."
There was about a 20 min wait to get in on a rainy Sunday evening. Â We had to wait outside the restaurant (not the greatest), but there were warming lights above us, so that was nice!
The wait staff was nice and attentive. Â Also, if you bring a little bottle of paint, you can graffiti the walls!!! Â I did and that was fun.
Good place to check out and have a fun night!
My boyfriend and I are debating over whats worse: the sauce or the crust. In any case, this place was a disapointment for both of us. Way too loud, over priced food and beer, long wait times at dinner, very touristy.
And as I said earlier, the pizza, which is what the main thing is here, isn't even that good. Just glad we had a groupon and we got in when there wasn't a wait because it wouldn't have been worth it otherwise.
It's Gino's folks. Â The pizza is okay, not great. Â I think the deep dish seems to be getting a bit shallow as our pizza seemed unusually thin. Â Personally I take Giordanos or Malnatis any day over this one. Â One last thing: Â When out-of-towners think of Chicago pizza they automatically think "deep dish". Â The reality is there are WAY more thin crust pizza places in Chicago than anything else and many of them blow the whole deep dish thing out of the water. Â Just my two cents.
Review Source:Had to check out one of the popular pizza joints since I was vacationing in Chicago!
Came on a weekday/afternoon hours. Waited about 10 minutes to be seated. Atmosphere very cool! Graffiti all over the walls and famous celebrities pictures/autograph who have eaten at Gino's East. (Beyonce, Will Smith, Jay-Z to name a few).
Waiter was nice/helpful and recommended a few things since it was our 1st time here. Ordered a Medium Thin Crust Pizza with cheese, pepperoni, spinach, side order of French fries and a Cesar salad for a party of two.
The pizza was amazing! Never had a pizza like that! Not to sure what it was but the crust was just right...thin and crispy! I like how the servings were cut into little squares instead of basic triangle cut! Easy to pick and eat the slices! French fries and Cesar salad was good as well!
Definitely worth it! All time favorite pizza joint! Don't miss out on it if you're in Chicago!
I currently live in Utah but grew up in Wisconsin. Whenever my wife and I visit Green Bay we have to make the drive down to Chicago to have some of their pizza. It is the best deep dish pizza you can ever eat. It is so much fun to go there and eat their pizza! I love it so much! Best pizza in the world!
Review Source:We stayed at the nearby Avenue Crowne Plaza Hotel (see my review) using a Groupon, and ate here using another Groupon, so we basically saved a bunch of money and didn't have to change car insurance or anything.
We waited outside (two of us) and were seated relatively quickly; it was nice that they had a system down to make the wait progressively more comfortable. When we got upstairs to our table we were prompted with menus however we know exactly what we wanted (which conveniently was what the Groupon offered) we ordered the baked ravioli appetizer which was awesome, and a medium deep dish pizza half cheese and half broken sausage. We couldn't finish the pizza so we boxed it up and ate it later on.
We also ordered a nice local beer in pitcher form which was a nice pairing with a Chicago pizza. I wish I could remember what it was exactly because I definitely enjoyed it, but I'll just have to go back to find out.
I have to admit this review was easy, Gino's East is classic and we got exactly what we anticipated. We're bummed that the Rolling Meadows location is closing but it makes visiting the city spots a little more special. I would go back in the summer to enjoy the weather and add more to the list of things to do, but the bottom line is that I would return.
A tip for those not familiar: You can write on the walls, so if you want your name to be seen, I would bring a silver sharpie.
Having recently moved within a short drive of Chicago, it seemed like the natural thing to do would be to see out a legendary "best pizza ever" place and give it a try. Â I had been given multiple suggestions, but Gino's won the popular vote in my group.
To start with, we called ahead and asked if they could accommodate a group of 15. We were told they absolutely could. Â However, when we arrived, they placed us at two completely different tables... Not a huge issue, but I would have preferred they explain that on the phone... it would have influenced our decision.
We were told that pizzas could take up to 45 minutes to make so we quickly ordered drinks, followed up by some breadsticks and a few pizzas. Â Along with that, two from our group ordered entree dishes. The server said the entrees came with a salad, took the salad orders and then asked if the two individuals would "like those brought out right away." "Sure, that would be great".
We were pretty confused when the entree dishes came out less than 10 minutes after the salads (which were brought right away). Â Poor communication, I suppose.
Our server had disappeared, more than half of the table was in need of a refill, and two of the 15 of us were stuck in the "should we eat without you guys?" limbo.
Our pizzas came ahead of schedule (35 minutes), so that was nice. Â However, none of us were impressed with them. Â The pizza I experienced was nothing like what some of the 5 star reviews on here describe. Â Thoroughly disappointing.
The service was the worst part, though... Â Hands down.
I've worked as a server, and I know the pressures of a large table like ours. Â However, that's no excuse for providing ONE round of refills, and visiting the table a grand total of TWO times between taking the order and giving the check.
As expected, automatic gratuity was applied, and I've never felt like it was less deserved.
"Meh" pizza, and even worse service. Â You won't find me here again.
Twice before in my life have I waited more than forty five minutes to try "The Best ..." In both cases I was extremely disappointed. Â Last night I waited almost an hour, in freezing temperatures, to try the deep dish pizza of Gino's East of Chicago.
Gino's has the unusual policy of letting parties of six or less fly through one line, while making parties of seven or more wait. Since there were ten of us, we got into the seven or more line. Not only did we see people who arrived at the same time as us, get seated before us, but we saw people who arrived after us, long after us, get seated before us. Â I am used to seeing two, maybe three small groups, go ahead of me if I'm waiting with a large group, but the restaurant I am waiting at will move tables around to seat us in ASAP.
Toby, who was helpful, friendly and professional, was manning the front door and was not to blame for our interminable wait, nor was the wait staff working indoors. Whoever decided having two lines for customers based on party size, as well as not moving tables around to accommodate waiting guests, was responsible for us, and other groups of seven or more (some containing children) waiting fifty five minutes, in freezing weather, to get seated.
When we finally got seated, we ordered appetizers which, even though they arrived quickly, weren't hot, more like warm; like they had been sitting under a heat lamp. Â The marinara sauce was warmer than the appetizers! Â For pizza, I started with the "Meaty Legend." While good, I have had other deep dish pizzas that were better.
Thinking I should try a classic pizza I reached for a slice of their cheese pizza. While tasty, based on my experience with Chicago Style Deep Dish pizza, (my dad was born and raised in Cicero and I have lived in and visited the Chicago area) I expected a balance of cheese, sauce and crust. Instead the crust was predominant. The cheese and sauce amounted to a thin coating over a massive amount of crust.
Overall I was not impressed. I have been to many places serving better Chicago Style Deep Dish pizza, where you don't have to wait for almost an hour in freezing weather to be served. If I had been served a pizza like one Gino's was hyped up to be, and been seated in a reasonable time, I may have been impressed.
However, in my opinion, Gino's is just another pizza place and not worth the ratings or accolades it has received. The servers and staff are friendly, fast and efficient, just what I would expect in a top rated restaurant, even if Gino's deep dish pizza is average.
If I ever ever have to wait more than forty five minutes for "The Best ..." or if I ever go to a restaurant that is not first come, first served or isn't willing to shift a few tables for larger parties again, I'm walking away and going somewhere else.
I'm fairly new to Chicago, but in the time I've been here, I've had a whole lot of pizza :) I can honestly say that Gino's East Four Cheese is my FAVORITE deep dish! The atmosphere was great, with writing all over the walls, and our waitress was great too. They have a decent beer selection, my friend and I both had Goose Island's Matilda, which I love. If you order a salad to start, the house salad is normal side salad size, but the cesar is made to share, for sure! I'd definitely give this place a try! I'll be back soon, for sure.
Review Source:After being recommended to this place for their deep dish pizza, my gf and I decided to stop in here to try it out. We just had a couple of hot dogs ourselves at Portillo's Hot Dogs which was just around the block from here. When we were situated at a table, there must had been some confusion with the workers, because we sat there for a good fifteen minutes without being acknowledged. Nothing to be mad about because I'm a server myself and can be understanding at time.
Anyways, once we had someone come take care of us, gf and I ordered a small Meaty Legend pizza. Our waitress informed us that it would take 45 minutes for the pizza to be prepared. Good thing for us, we went here not on an empty stomach. The pizza was good, but gf and I couldn't finish the entire pizza (4slices). We only managed to devour a slice each.
All in all, it was a good experience minus the mishap at the beginning. Kate, our waitress, was awesome.
Note to self: bring a sharpie with me here the next time i visit. Step inside the establishment and you'll see why. :)
I'm looking at the other reviews and either I was too excited or I'm not used to this kind of pizza since I'm from out of town or I'm too lenient on grading food/pizza in general. Â The deep dish pizza I had here was heavenly. We ordered the Supreme and it was fresh and delicious. Â I could only have 2 slices since it was as thick as a Harry Potter hard back. Â Nevertheless, my next visit, I will have to visit/grade the local competitor!
Review Source:Our family which included a pregnant woman, a 2 year old, and a 6 year old were in town from out of state. We called and asked if there was a wait and they said 10 minutes...when we walked across the street from the hotel, we had to stand outside for 30 minutes in the 15 degree weather (they would not let us wait inside) and ended up waiting about 50 minutes to get seated.
When we got seated, there were not 1, not 2, but 3 big tables that easily could of sat 6 people. When I confronted the manager he said they didn't have a waiter for that section...it was a Friday night in Chicago...really? The best pizza town in the world doesn't have enough servers on a Friday? Hmm.
Food was hot garbage. Calamari was disgusting and over breaded. Cheese bread was hard and actually cold. Chicken tenders were actually pretty decent. The calzone was dry and hard. 2 people ordered salads that never arrived (and did not get an apology from the waiter). Pizza was typical Gino's East pizza. Average at best.
The reason I am giving 2 stars and not one is because the manager comped our apps which was very cool of him. Nice guy. I will never come here again even if they offered us a free meal.
Oh so sad. Â I thought this would be better.
I know the debate goes on... what is the best pizza in Chicago. Â Many say Gino's, many say Lou Malnati's, some say another... Â This was not it for us. Â We spend the day going all over Chicago, the evening drinking and enjoying jazz and headed to Gino's for a good hot meal. Â We were exhausted so this seemed like a great idea.
I was extremely impressed with the structure to move people in and out and shortening the wait time however I felt that negatively inside because they rush table service. Â The service was not good and they all seemed to be unhappy. Â
We did hit Lou's the next night which proved to be far better pizza and just overall tasted fresher. Â As a foodie, the fresh factor was big.
I can't say I recommend Gino's and I will not go back.
This was my first stop right out of the airport in chicago! We were starving and decided to head here because I had heard a few good things about this place. The wait was not a wait because we agreed to sit at the bar. We were seated right away. We got the chicago fire deep dish pizza and I tried a few of their local brewed beers. Everything was so delicious. The pizza is done the right way and perfectly in Chicago! The crust on the bottom of nice and crunchy like a pie crust and the middle filling of the pizza was delicious. The beer I had was called 5 Rabbit? And it was a hef mixed with a fruity after taste... I still want another pint!
Review Source:OMG- I love this pizza!! I remember coming to the Gino's in Naperville and it not being this good, which is probably why it closed? Anyway this location is right behind Northwestern Hospital which my husband obviously came to upon my endless hospital stays! So I got a Groupon and we came here. The Groupon was a great way to get us in here again because now we'll probably always make this our stop! It was worth the wait as we were getting anxious sitting there what seemed like forever waiting for our deep dish pizza! We also got the toasted ravioli which were good and a salad which was ok? But the pizza is why you come here!! The crust was so good- buttery and flaky- YUM! Come out here and check this place out, the best pizza I've had for a long, long time!! Bring your permanent markers so you can write on there walls- if you can find any space!
Review Source:The pizza at Gino's East is an amazing example of Chicago deep-dish pizza, but like all deep-dish pizza, takes a long time to make. When visiting, be prepared to wait an hour or more once you place your order. Another good option is to order delivery or carry-out, which takes the same amount of time, but may be more convenient.
If you dine in, be sure to take a marker so you can write your name on the wall.
I don't understand how anybody could give less than 3 stars for this. I've only been to Chicago once and was literally anticipating deep dish for 2 months. Gino's East went above and beyond my expectation. I think we got some super meaty one, and I cherished every monster bite I took of that pizza. I will gladly visit there anytime again if I'm in town.
Review Source:We ordered for delivery and after placing our order we learned that we were out of the delivery area. We had to drive to pick up the pizza but Gino's East was great enough to give us a discount on our meal since we had to come pick it up.
Gino's has great pizza and great customer service which is what will continue to bring us back here.
Thanks Gino's!!!
We arrived in Chicago on a Friday evening, we were starving and we wanted to hit up Giordano's but they were ridiculously packed! It was an hour & a half wait, so we decided to come to Gino's East.
The wait was about 20 minutes. Service was great, everyone was so friendly, I guess as they should be at a tourist trip =P
We ordered the appetizer family plate, salad & a medium deep dish - the Gino's special and the veggie pizza.
The appetizers were average, tastes like any other deep fried vegetable. When the deep dish came out, I knew right away it wouldn't taste good =( the dough was too thick, it was crispy but I just didn't think it was right for the pizza. Overall, not satisfied =( boo! I feel bad..
Call me crazy, but I was not at all impressed. I tried the house salad and the vegetarian deep dish pizza. The best part of the meal was probably the Italian dressing on the salad if that tells you anything. The pizza lacked seasoning and the crust was bland. Super lackluster, but at least I tried it.
You can absolutely find better deep dish pizza elsewhere. Heck Uno is better! SMH
A lot of hype... maybe because I prefer thin crust, but deep dish is just so-so.
This place has a nice bar/casual type atmosphere. Â Fun for kids because they get crayons and placemat to draw on. Â They can also write on the walls. Â Kids get a free cookie too.
Salads are smallish size. Â Good service though. Â If you've never had, I'd say it's worth a try.
They have TV's, so you can watch the game!!!
I came to Chicago for some training and wanted to be sure to eat some authentic deep dish. We decided on Gino's and after not eating for about 8 hrs prior, I felt it would be amazing. However, when it came time to dive in, I was a bit underwhelmed. Actually, I was disappointed. I've had deep dish before and enjoyed it at a local chain in AZ that has about 10 locations. I know some people might not agree with me, but I felt the sauce at Gino's was a little generic and the crust tasted like a bad corn muffin (not to mention very dry).
TLDR: Meh sauce and dry crust made for a disappointing, pricey meal.
I would be able to give a better review if the service was not so crappy.
By service, I mean, the moment you walk near the door.
I understand, you guys are well-known. Â I get it, you guys have lots of customers. Â But a little bit of courtesy for those who are waiting to be seated would be nice.
The person in charge of the line was nonchalent, which I have no problem with.
Once you get past the front door, the person delagating who sits where? um...pretty sure "STAND THERE" is not only impolite, but c'mon man, I'm just trying to pay you to feed me!
Once we were seated, it took about 15 minutes to get a waiter.
..annoying.
The pizza itself was pretty good.
The decor, you love or hate.
But the service is so terrible that you can't help but not want to even compliment the food.
Zero redeeming qualities about this place.
I can see how someone finds the fact that they deface everything in the place with whiteout as being cool but it did nothing for me.
When we were finally seated and a waiter came over, he forewarned us that the pizza will take about an hour to prepare...huh? So we decided we had to order something in the meantime so we went with the salad. Meh. Nothing really stood out from it.
When the pizza finally came out, 50 minutes later, it was an epic fail. The sauce was terrible. The crust tasted like it was frozen and had no flavor. The toppings were about 2 pepperoni's. How does a place like this continue to wow people.
Pizzeria Uno has better deep-dish pizza...even in Jersey! I know this will upset some people but sheesh people...
Absolutely a must avoid.
Steps on successfully completing your meal at Gino's:
1. Come after normal lunch rush (~ 1 pm) to avoid any wait at all.
2. Immediately scan the menu, discuss with your group which pizza will be chosen to order, and then flag down your waitress ASAP.
3. Order the pizza, and nothing else, so the order can process immediately.
4. Wait 45 minutes for the pizza to cook. Tick tock, tick tock....
....Meanwhile, drink 2 cups of water and talk about everything on your mind to pass the time.
5. Finally, get the pizza and start GRUBBING. Eat the pizza, with very minimal conversation because you're that hungry and want to devour the deep dish ASAP.
6. Slump in your chair from major food coma and attempt to not fail asleep right there and then and hoping you can make it back home in one piece...

The PIZZA Review: For Gino's East Supreme - Sausage, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, and lots and lots of cheese.
I thought the pizza itself was just okay. It lacked a lot of tomato sauce that deep dish pizzas ought to have, and instead, replaced that void with cheese for days. Cheese was good, but too much made it too stringy and chewy. I really liked the SAUSAGE - it's homemade, it's fresh, a bit peppery, and none of that gross preservatives with oil dripping upon each bite. I liked the dough because it was unique - it's kind of like a pastry crust that consisted of cornmeal, instead of the normal pizza dough. Just wish there was more sauce cus eating that crust by itself gets a bit dry.
Medium - 6 slices - $30.00 total. Not sure if it's worth $10 for 2 slices of pizza...plus, the service was pretty much non-existent even though they weren't thattt busy.
*LOVED the graffiti walls though -- make sure you bring a white-out pen to mark your territory on these walls!
Came to this location during a trip to Chicago. We waited on line for about 35 minutes. I'm not a big fan of pizza, but since its a famous spot decided to go. When we get in and sit down my party ordered a deep dish pizza. The waiter said it would be 45 mins!!!! 45 mins I think they should have taken our order when we were standing outside so that when we go in we would just have a 10 min wait. Makes sense to me.
The Buffalo Wings are really good, I must say.
The wife and I squeezed in a stop here for lunch when we were in town for her business trip / our pizza extravaganza. She couldn't quite get away long enough to wait for the pizza to come out (which takes 45 minutes to cook--longer if they're busy), but we shared a good garlic bread appetizer and a good Goose Island beer.
We ordered a small supreme (sausage, onions, green peppers, mushrooms), but I'm pretty sure we were served a cheese and sausage on accident. At least I hope we were--if there were any veggies in there, I sure couldn't find them. Still, great pizza and not a big deal--the sausage is the main attraction anyway. Â When you get sausage, you can choose sausage crumbles (like you typically see on pizza) or one sausage patty covering the whole pizza. We went for the patty, which I definitely recommend. The sausage itself is great, which is good, because the patty makes it the star of the show, even overshadowing the crust.
Speaking of, the cornmeal crust is very good. I love cornbread, so I was probably predisposed to liking it, but I thought it was great--crunchy and really tasty. Sauce is good as well, but the crust and sausage are the stars of the show. Even after an hour in a to-go box, my wife's half was great--it helps of course that the sausage holds up really well.
The small is a great size for two people--not as overwhelmingly huge as Giordano's, but more than you can comfortably finish for lunch if you get any sort of appetizer while you wait.
I am not a big fan of deep dish pizza. I really don't see the allure of having all that extra crust in my tummy. I think pizza is all about the toppings. I prefer thin crust pizzas.
Ordered a mini deep dish pepperoni for lunch. Got the pasta salad with it. The delicious pasta salad and the quick service were the only enjoyable things to me at Gino's. The pizza was tasteless and bland. Too much pizza sauce for me.
Gino's left me disappointed once again. I haven't eaten here since the late 90's but sadly it hasn't improved since then.
How do they make pizza taste like that? All my life I've been hearing about Chicago Pizza and finally I know it's true...it's all true. This is life altering.
We traveled to Chicago, then walked (and walked) here. It was HOT. There was a LONG line. I had done my research and I was determined, so I quietly got in line. Not 3 seconds later the hostess asked if there were any parties of 7 or more. There was 8 of us...Pick me, I think as we wave our arms in the air." Follow me" she said, "I can seat you now" Life is good I think to myself before I treked up three flights of stairs. I reminderd myself it would be worth it while huffing and puffing away. http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
They warn us it's deep dish and filling and not to over order. But we're starving and it will take an hour to bake our pizza. So we over ordered. Started with a salad cause I wanted the girls to have their veggies. Tuscan Harvest Salad...greens, apples, dried cranberries, walnuts and gorganzola cheese with rasberry dressing. This salad was big enough we all eight ate it! So good. But bring on the pizza...I'm ready for pizza! http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
We got a Four Cheese (Mozzarella, Provolone, Cheddar and Ricotta), http://www.yelp.com/biz_… a small Bacon and Cheese, and a Gino's East Supreme. The corn meal crust was the best thing ever, as was the combo of cheese. We dig in. Everyone is happy. I finish a piece. I force myself to take another...how can we waste so much when this is soooo good??? I managed to get half way thru my second piece. I defy anyone to eat two! This is filling. But everything I dreamed it would be. And more. http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
One salad, 3 beers, six soft drinks, 3 pizzas + $144 before tax and tip. A lot for pizza, I know. But this is not like any other pizza in the world - I promise you that. I was afraid I would never be hungry again, even after walking miles after dinner. But what I wouldn't give for another cheese pizza right now!!!
