Oh Papi's. What happened? When Papi's first opened up on Western Avenue, I was excited about the prospect of having a Mexican fast food place around the corner. I was not expecting it to become one of my all time favorites that even offered breakfast and some legitimately higher end dinners.
And then one day... it was gone. Papi's moved around the corner to Taylor Street to share a retail space and kitchen with Damenzo's (a pizza place). The resulting situation is one of chaotic disorder and god-awful service; no burrito should take 35 minutes. The quality of the food has also suffered, and while it's not as bad as the service, it is now only mediocre at best. I even went back a second time before writing a negative review to make sure the first time wasn't just an unfortunate fluke.
What a disappointment. RIP Papi's.
I love this place. I remember when it all began. I was super excited we were getting a taco joint on my block and it has certainly been a blessing! They stay open late and food is fast and inexpensive. They serve breakfast all day long which is really nice. I especially like the milanesa torta and the milanesa dinner. The horchata is excellent. And if you sit inside and eat you get free chips and salsa!
