Sorry, I've had to place you down one star.
Still, I am a big Pepe's fan. The tacos on 61st  are the best I've had in the chain. However, last time I dined in, I was very unhappy with the customer service. My sisters and I went to Pepe's because I had to have three soft tacos, pork with extra cheese.  After being seated, the waiter was very rude. She was slow in getting us our food, she focused on another table the whole time, she rushed the bill and she told us that she would not place our orders to go becuase she was now off. Just rude. Why table us if you can't serve us the whole time and further, why be rude about it? My tummy left happy, but my I was very upset about this type of service.
In addition, question to the owner, why has the back area, known as the family room when you first opened, closed? One suggestion I have is opening this area due to the heavy smoke and drunk coversations that travels from the bar to the upstairs dinning room.
Nevertheless, nothing can keep me away from this place. I crave your tacos too much. However, it will be a while before I dine in again.
I have enjoyed the Pepe's location in Steger, so I thought I would try one a little closer to home. I was VERY disappointed in the experience. It was strange to me to see how crowded the place was after I left. The seating area was dirty...there were particles and crumbs on the seats. There were beverage rings on the table. The waiter was freindly but suffering from early onset alzheimer's...he gave us our menu and came back in like two minutes, so I asked for a little more time. Well, about 15 minutes later he finally came back, and my son and I ordered. I don't remember what my son got, but I got the chile rellano. Â
We got a basket of chips and some salsa while we waited for the meal. The chips were nothing special, but the salsa was weird. First, it has the flavor of canned tomato juice; it was really thin, and had a strange aftertaste. It was definately the most lackluster salsa I've ever eaten. There was no spiciness to it at all...I could see some spices in it...I just couldn't taste them.
The chile rellano was just plain disgusting. The coating clung to it like curdled eggsm and it had obviously been cooked much earlier in the day. The rice on the side was dried up and cold, like the last serving from a dish that has been on the counter for a while. The refried beans were ok.
I think my son had a quesadilla, which was edible. Just.
When we were ready to pay and leave, my indifferent waiter left us waiting and waiting and waiting. I finally had to flag down another employee just to get the guy to give us our check.
I'll never return to this particular Pepe's.
